Guided Commute For Visually Challenged

The ‘Station reported device’ is both a guide dog and Marvel’s ‘Dare Devil’ rolled into one wearable gadget. This concept is designed to assist visually challenged persons for a safe commute. It employs EVTSS technology to send electrical signals to a person’s brain to create 2 dimensional visuals of oncoming vehicles and possible obstacles. The multitalented device can also guide a person to the nearest bust stop, select a bus route, scan the buses with its inbuilt camera and alert the wearer when the right bus comes. It can also generate SOS signals by means of sounds and lights.

This project is a Dongguan Cup winner.

Hot-Key Board

For someone like me, who regularly uses half a dozen 3D and 2D software, remembering each one’s hot-key shortcuts are a nightmare. The ikeyboard might be able to bring back my kindred from the verge of hot-key induced mental breakdowns. This keyboard turns hot-keys into cool keys by displaying them right on the keyboard itself.

The E-ink displays on the keys can adapt themselves according to the software being used. The intelligent keyboard learns about the regularly used hot-keys for each software and automatically displays them while the software is on. When you open an internet browser, it switches into browser mode and displays the logos of regularly visited websites, enabling you to access them with the click of a single button. Cool!

Touchy-feely Hearing Aid

Conventional hearing aids come with a lot of short comings. Loud noises making the wearer feel irritable, the awkwardness of wearing bigger sized hearing aids and many more. The CLOSE is an attempt at an alternative system to provide speech input to the hearing impaired by means of tactile sensations.

Fashioned like a stylish smart watch, CLOSE has been claimed to possess the capability to analyze and convert auditory signals into tactile sensations. It aims to achieve tactile communication by means of electrode arrays that simulates the feeling of touch on the wrist. The designers are confident that human brain could decipher these tactile inputs into speech patterns. CLOSE can also share information with a smartphone via Bluetooth linking.

The CLOSE concept would be a great invention if it could work perfectly as claimed by the designers. Because, not only can this be an alternative to hearing aids, but also help people with cochlear damage and zero hearing abilities.

Sound Solution

It is an irony that the very properties that makes a noise cancellation earphone desirable, can also deem it hazardous. Even though it feels nice to get disconnected from the chaos and din of the streets, the feature also renders you deaf to possible warning sounds such as the honking of a car or a bicycle bell. The ‘Master Your Sound’ earphones are designed to provide the best of both worlds with a feature to turn noise cancellation on and off at will. A mere twisting of a knob can turn off Noise cancellation and let the sounds from outside trickle in along with the music.

Level Heading Stretcher

Skiing, trekking, rock climbing and all the similar thrills that the mountains provide also come with the high risk of accidents. The rescue operations of such victims demand specialized equipments that can tackle the unique challenges posed by a mountainous terrain. The Seesaw stretcher is a smart yet simple solution that seems to have the agility to adopt to such demanding conditions.

The bed of the Seesaw stretcher is fixed on two pivots that allows it to swivel. This swivel action helps it to balance the victim’s body in horizontal level even while traversing steep inclinations. Activate a locking mechanism and the stretcher turns into a regular fixed type. I feel that the stretcher can play a role in not just mountain rescue operations but also urban fire rescue scenarios that involves stairs and tall buildings.

Often, the most genial solutions come dressed as simple designs. The Seesaw stretcher is a classic example for that, tilting scales in favor of safer rescue operations.

Grass Printer For Lawnly Creatives

Move over dot matrix, because here comes the grass matrix. The Grass Printer is an automated mower that lets you create messages and art on your lawn. The mower’s smaller sized blades (resolution matters!) can selectively cut the grass to recreate whatever you sketch on its touchscreen. Small motors move the cutter shaft horizontally and vertically to create the selective trimming. The area of the art is defined by four sensors placed at each corner. Get one for yourselves and create the mother of all status messages. Of course on grass!

Pitch Perfect

Hammering pins into the ground for pitching the tent is a big hassle during camping. It can be difficult and dangerous. ’45 degree PIN-DOWN’ allows you to drive tent pins into the ground without the needing hammer. It uses a foot pedal and one’s whole body weight to make the task easier, safer, and more efficient. The pedal, which doubles up as the pin case, drives the light weight Titanium pins downward at a 45-degree angle.

45 degree PIN-DOWN is a 2013 Red Dot Award: Design Concept winning project.

Luxury Coupé With A Biodegradable Body

As the entire world is waking up to the fact that preservation of nature is essential for the existence of humanity, Eco-friendly products are gathering genuine respect world over. In a time when Mink coats and alligator leather are frowned upon, the luxury market is reinventing itself by coming up wit with ecologically responsible products. The Mercedes Benz LX concept by Irfendy Mohamad is an attempt to explore this undercurrent.

The LX concept proposes usage of Bagasse, the fibrous leftover from sugarcane juice extraction, for automotive body parts. Bagasse, when treated properly, can constitute a rigid, bio-degradable structure with practical durability and desirable texture. The fibrous connection doesn’t end there. The organically flowing crease lines on the radically designed car concept were inspired by Bagasse fibres. It is reassuring to see budding designers championing ecological responsibility. Let us hope for a near future where sugar daddies flaunt their bio-degradable rides to impress the chicks. The Bagasse way.
