2001’s Spaceship Recreated in Gingerbread Form

2001: A Space Odyssey is a classic in just about every sense of the word. Stanley Kubrick and Arthur C. Clarke created a true masterpiece. Douglas Trumbull’s miniatures and visual effects even rival today’s movies. It’s definitely one of my favorite films of all time. That’s why it’s so easy for me to love this gingerbread sculpture of the iconic spaceship, the USS Discovery.

Southern California’s Blackmarket Bakery baked this amazing model for the recent holidays, and it looks amazing. The bakery must be filled with artists, since they have designed gingerbread masterpieces for holidays for over 10 years now. This year it was the USS Discovery’s turn. I’m just in love with all of the gingerbread detail they worked into this thing. Very nice use of Chex pieces and pretzels there too. Personally, I don’t care if HAL opens the pod bay doors or not. I just wanna eat this ship up.

The ship is impressive enough, but down below you can see the opening scene from the movie as well, where the monkey throws the bone into the air. Or in this case, candies stand in for bones. The monolith sits solemnly and was easy enough to recreate by using a chocolate bar.

HAL 9000 USB Drive: Open the Drive Bay Doors, HAL

We’re big fans of 2001: A Space Odyssey around here. There isn’t nearly enough 2001 merch available for fans, so when we see something nifty, we’ve gotta post it. This sweet Hal 9000 USB Drive helps to rectify that situation.

Kubrick’s dystopian masterpiece is one of the greatest sci-fi films ever and one of the most influential films in history. Many of the film’s predictions have come to pass in the 50 years since it first hit movie screens, most specifically talking computers that don’t do what you ask them to.

The limited-edition HAL Mini USB drive from Master Replicas Group is a great way to show your love for the murderous computer from the movie. The drive looks just like the face of the HAL 9000 computer from the second act of the film. The red lens that represents HAL’s camera eye lights up on the USB stick, so that is already pretty eerie. I’m really hoping that this USB drive doesn’t go insane like the original HAL. It might just deny you access to your own computer.

“Let me in HAL!”

“I can’t do that, Dave.”

Let’s just hope that this drive is sane. It’s definitely worth buying, but watch it closely. Very closely. I’ll just use it for show. No way am I plugging this thing into my own computer.

2001: A Space Odyssey Plush Dave Bowman: My God It’s Full of Stuffing

Can you believe that it’s been 50 years since the science fiction film 2001: A Space Odyssey premiered in theaters? It’s a far more esoteric movie than Star Trek or Star Wars, which is probably why there isn’t much in the way of merchandise to collect.

So it’s nice whenever they drop anything 2001 related that we can buy. Hallmark has come up with an adorable collectible in the form of Dave Bowman’s character. A Dave Bowman plush toy. Open the pod bay doors to cuteness, HAL.

Hallmark’s cute little version of Dave Bowman is wearing his Discovery One red spacesuit and ready to float around space to the tune of Blue Danube. This plush will stand for some time as the cutest 2001 collectible in existence. I can’t see anything topping it. Good move Hallmark, now just give us a squishy monolith and that shuttle with the grabbing claws.

It will cost you only $8, but you won’t find them in Hallmark stores at your local mall. Instead, you will need to hit up the Hallmark website. This is a limited edition, but the company doesn’t tell us exactly how many they’ll make. 2001, perhaps?

Life-Size Talking HAL 9000 Replica

hal 9000 Life Size Talking HAL 9000 Replica
Are you a big fan of the movie 2001? Are you a big enough fan to spend $500 on a Life-Size Talking HAL 9000 Replica Life Size Talking HAL 9000 Replica? This thing was created from the original movie blueprints. It has a red LED eye and when you talk to it, it will activate one of 15 different sound clips from the movie. Here’s a video clip:

Pretty cool stuff, especially if your name happens to be Dave. But $500 cool? Only if you’ve got money to burn. Yeah it’s a replica and not a toy, but it seems way overproduced for what it is. I’m sure hardcore sci-fi fans will dig it though.

ThinkGeek offers lifesize, $500 HAL 9000 replica, makes you answer to 'Dave'

It was a little over a year ago that ThinkGeek gave folks a chance to add a bit of 2001 to their home with the IRIS 9000 iPhone dock, but it's really gone the extra mile this year. The retailer has today announced its new HAL 9000 Life-Size Replica, a $500 device that's said to be built using the original 1967 blueprints and image files. What's more, while it isn't exactly "fully functional," it is able to respond to voice commands and most IR remotes with a variety of suitably unsettling phrases (yes, including a rendition of "Daisy Bell"). The downside is that it will set you back considerably more than the $60 of its smaller counterpart -- ThinkGeek is asking a full $500 for this conversation starter, each of which is "hand-assembled to make sure they are perfect." Would-be purchasers can get a taste of what's in store in the video after the break.
