STRAMP Table and Chair Set ready for developmental play and learning

Concept STRAMP Chair and Table

Kids’ chairs and tables don’t always have to be basic. This category can actually be explored not only by designers and furniture makers but also by parents and educators. It’s a totally different business as the children have very different needs from the adults and even among themselves.

It’s not enough that we know children of different ages are different from one another. For example, some kids have special needs, so that must be considered. In addition, some children have been diagnosed with ADHD, which means there is a particular approach to dealing with them.

Parents, guardians, and teachers must know what to do. First, it pays to be correctly diagnosed and guided by professionals. Then, there are proper treatments to help the children cope in life. The goal is to help the kids reduce or prevent possible challenges like anti-social behaviors, anxieties, depression, or learning difficulties.

Children with ADHD are recommended to undergo behavioral therapies. Small group activities are essential, so it’s a must you look for the right group and have the right tools. Everything must be done to help improve a kid’s focus and social skills. The STRAMP may help as the table and chair set has been designed to allow children to have and be adventurous.

STRAMP can be the perfect space for children. It’s really just a table and chair set, but it can be transformed into an activity area. Under regular mode, the STRAMP features a table and chair. Come playtime, you can flip the table, and it becomes a ramp with handles. The chair then transforms into stairs that you can combine with the other piece.

The possibilities are endless with the STRAMP, as kids will never run out of things to do with the set. The Stramp transforms into a mini playground when things get boring and dull. Of course, it’s only a concept, but we can imagine several sets being used and positioned in a big room where kids can have all the fun.

ADHD is nothing to be ashamed of, but if your kid gets diagnosed, you need to do everything you can to understand and manage the symptoms. Be there for your child and decide you will help him with his progress. There are plenty of designs, products, and services that cater to ADHD. We have featured a few here, like the Squizits toy and Hoglet HedgeHog Mouse. There’s also the Forest, a set of desk partitions and slot profiles you can attach to the student’s table.

Forest lets students create interactive bubble to help them focus

If you’ve ever dealt with someone with neurodivergent issues, specifically ADHD and other related developmental issues, concentration is a hard thing to practice. It is important to give them the tools that can help them focus on the task at hand, especially while they’re still young and studying in school. But it’s also crucial that they are able to not be too isolated from their classmates and learn to work with them while dealing with their own issues.

Designer: Shion Ito

A Japanese designer thought about this problem and decided to come up with a concept that would let students with ADHD create their own physical bubble to help them with their concentration issues. At the same time, it will not totally isolate them from their classmates and even get them to participate in creating this bubble if they wish to do so. What he came up with is something called Forest, a set of desk partitions and slot profiles to attach to the student’s table.

Basically, the partition can be created using cut-outs of things like animals, plants, and trees, hence the Forest name. Students will be able to choose what kind of forest they want to create for their bubble and how high or how low this bubble will be. During the prototyping and testing phase of this concept, other students also found the building of this “fortress” to be something they’d like to participate in, therefore eliminating the isolation that the student with ADHD may feel.

Some of the existing partitions for students with concentration issues are too big and too isolated. Forest has small partitions and cut-outs so that it will not be too intimidating both for the ADHD student and his neurotypical classmates. These cutouts are made from wood and painted with soft colors like yellow, green, and turquoise blue, which help the students focus on their studies by calming their eyes.

Hopefully, the Forest will be something that schools with students with ADHD will be able to test this out. Anything that can help them focus and concentrate and also get their classmates to participate will be a welcome tool.

I’m not sure what to make of this tactile, textured mouse, but I really want one!

Part computer accessory, part fidget-toy, the Hoglet is an absolute visual and tactile treat! Designed for kids with ADHD, or anyone with a quirky sense of style, this computer mouse aims at giving you a tech accessory that’s unconventionally fun to interact with! The Hoglet is a wireless mouse modeled on a hedgehog, with a silicone sleeve around its grip with multiple bristles that come in contact with your hand as you grip it. The objective of the Hoglet is to do multiple things. For starters, it makes tech feel a little less scary and a little more approachable. The mouse is incredibly tactile, and comes in heartwarming colors. Its silicone texture aims at creating a new sort of experience that almost seems pet-like, reinforcing the mouse-ness of the mouse, and helps boost focus and reduce anxiety.

The designer behind the Hoglet, Parker Lynch, struggled with ADHD growing up. As an adult, he dedicated himself to helping kids with learning differences. Working with children with ADHD helped Parker understand how beneficial a fidget toy could be with allowing a kid to stay attentive and focused… but for the most part, these fidget toys weren’t allowed into computer labs, which left the kids anxious and unable to concentrate. This led Parker down a road which got him consulting with researchers, parents, teachers, occupational therapists, and board-certified behavior analysts before he started developing the Hoglet. 5 years and multiple explorations and prototypes later, the Hoglet was born. With its anthropomorphic form, Hoglet instantly appeared as a friend, and with its sensory body, it gave kids something to fidget with and help them stay focused while using computers.

The body of the Hoglet is made of food-grade silicone: pliable, washable, non-toxic and child-safe. It’s as pleasing to the eye as it is to the touch, with a choice of brilliant colors. The mouse underneath the silicone sleeve comes with a ball-scroller, for more intuitive scrolling, and even features silent buttons, to prevent any distraction to children on the autism spectrum. All in all, the Hoglet is an inventive take on a tech peripheral that has hardly ever gotten a special-needs redesign. Most mice are built for offices, gaming, and ergonomic usage, so the Hoglet is quite literally a breath of fresh air… providing a new and enjoyable experience not just for kids but even for adults with a sense of wonder and whimsy!
