Australia’s first banknote printed 100 years ago has gone on sale for $3.6 million

In a rare revision of Australia’s economic history, the first bank-note printed over a 100 years ago has gone on the auction block for a price of A$3.6 million ($3.68 million). Though this year has seen currency land on the auction blocks in the form of coins such as the rare 1913 Liberty nickel, and the rare Islamic gold coins, this bank-note appears as something for a rarer pedigree, which means that price records are set to be broken for currency auctions in the time to come. Recent history dating to the year 2008, shows that this particular bank note actually had been the most expensive Australian bank note ever sold, by commanding A$1.8 million at an auction then. Numbered ‘M000001’, this was known to be the first note printed in 1913, and given as a gift to Judith Denman, the daughter of then Governor-General of Australia, Lord Deman, and has been under the family’s position for most it’s life.

The auction world, more so the ones that deal with master art pieces, has shown a strong inclination towards Middle Eastern and South East Asian art. We recently saw the Islamic coins auction which gained notoriety for fetching a high price during the auction event. Even Chinese art in the form of the Red Imperial bowl, fetched record prices at the auction it featured. Now paintings of the Holy Prophet Mohammed’s (S.A.W) feet, and a painting of Mahatma Gandhi, known as ‘Father of the nation’ in India, is up for auction by Mullock’s auctioneers on May 21 this year. Noted to be one of the rare art forms, both of these will have a large religious, and historic significance across audiences and collectors in the world.

Winston Churchill’s Vintage Daimler DB 18 Drophead Coupe sold for $614,500

Great Britain’s World War-II Prime Minister, Sir Winston Churchill was known to have his own style statements, the main ones being the hat and the cigar. Apart from those, he was also known to have a fair liking for cars, like we saw in the case of the Custom Land Rover which went up for auction last year. Then there was the iconic 1939 Daimler DB18 Drophead coupe which the former British premier had used during the World War years, which has eventually been sold on eBay’s German site for a price of $614,487. Apart from being Sir Churchill’s choice of escort vehicle during his election campaigns in 1944 and 1949, this Damiler DB18 is supposedly the only unit of it’s kind surviving in the world today. There were an estimated 23 of these cars made, most of which have either perished or remain under untraced ownership. The production was also bought to a halt due to the World War that started in 1939.

Having a coffee with the Chief Executive of Apple Inc. can certainly have it’s price. As per latest figures available, the bidding price for a coffee date with Tim Cook, at the Cupertino Headquarters of Apple, has topped the $295,000 mark, and is going higher. The proceeds of this auction will be directed towards the Robert F Kennedy Centre for Justice and Human Rights. This latest charity event based on celebrity date, marks the Apple chief executive’s inclination towards social causes, and using his status for the betterment of society at large. However, with the ultra-premium price tag, one cannot help but draw parallels to other such auctions, including the Lindt Gold bunny celebrity auction, Warren Buffet Charity lunch for 2012, 2011 Charity lunch with Warren Buffet where his star power was used to generate funds for a social cause.

One of the grandest luxury hotels in Paris ‘Hotel Crillon’ furniture and wines up for auction

In the recent years, luxurious hotels and landmark restaurants in some of the world’s prime cities have undergone renovations and sellouts. This has prompted most of them to sell their cutlery, crockery and other items for auction, like we saw in the case of the Jules Verne restaurant in Paris, and also the elBulli memorabilia auction earlier this year. Latest news is that one of Paris’ best known luxury hotels, the Crillon will be undergoing a renovation, and hence will be auctioning it’s furniture and wine collection. Hotel Crillon is known to have been hosts to Bill Clinton and Madonna amongst it’s star guests, but after years of pleasing the glitterati, will undergo a renovation process, which could be taking close to 2 years to complete. This is the reason why it now is a vacant hotel, with audience coming to buy the memorabilia from the place.
