A stove-friendly oven that lets you bake at home and outdoors easily with its portable design

Who said bakers had to stay aloof of their skill while camping? This portable oven capable of letting you bake over a stove flame is that ultimate accessory you were waiting to pack in the boot of your car when heading out to the wilderness.

Called the Ember, this conceptual portable oven features a monolithic design and has a sleek and clever build to ensure it can be used on a stove’s flame – without electricity – to create that ideal condition for baking. You can use this space-saving oven on the kitchen counter, or as I said, pack it along on your way out for camping. But as the designer puts it, the oven is more specifically a solution designed to facilitate baking in small kitchens.

Designer: Adrian Perez

Given its process of baking, Ember is able to bake healthier food in small domestic spaces faster as compared to conventional ways. The unit is more convenient to use as well – simply place it on the stove flame, fill Ember with its container for baking cupcakes, and close the glass lid. The heat channels through the corners up to the top of the oven from where it then bounces back from the lid to bake the cupcakes nicely from the top. Meanwhile, the heat is also allowed to enter the Ember from the center, which bakes the cakes evenly from the bottom.

In order to expand the possibilities, Ember comes with multiple accessories for different types of preparation. Along with the cupcakes tray, you get a multi-purpose tray, a refractory container, and a shelf. With handles on the side to move the unit on and off the flame, Ember has a thermometer display on one side, which is linked to a dedicated mobile app. The app allows you to keep tabs on your preparation and also scroll through a range of recipes you can prepare in the portable oven. For more stylish homes, Ember can be available in cherry tomato, strawberry quartz, and Salmon colors as well.

Silicone Mold Bakes Life-Size Human Skull Cakes: Mmmm, Brains

Sure, you could bake a regular sheet cake for your next party, or you could make something a little bit more morbid with this 3D Skull Head Silicone Cake Mold available on Amazon (affiliate link). The mold creates both front and back skull pieces that, when attached with icing, create a life-size 8.5″ x 5.4″ x 7.1″ cranium. Well, an average life-size cranium. Mine is much larger.

This mold will come in handy around Halloween time. What do you think would make the best edible eyeballs to put in the eye sockets – gumballs? Jawbreakers? Pearl onions? Hardboiled eggs? Of course, those last two would probably be considered more tricks than treats. Especially if you also carved a hole in your skull cake and filled it with spaghetti to mimic brains.

Not much of a cake person? No worries, the silicone molds are equally suitable for making Rice Krispies treats or soap. But, speaking from experience, eating that much soap will probably upset your stomach. To my mom’s credit, though, I’ve never said another dirty word since.

Bake a Giant Party-Size Twinkie with This Official Baking Kit

You know what the problem with Twinkies is? They simply aren’t big enough. Like who only eats just one ten-count box? Nobody I know, but admittedly I only truly know myself. Introducing the Hostess Party Size Twinkies Holiday Baking Kit, obviously one of only a handful of good things to come out of 2020.

Available from Walmart for $15, the kit includes a yellow cake mix, creme filling mix, baking pan, and instructions. You just need to provide vegetable oil, eggs, water, and heavy cream, and you’ll have yourself a 2,600-calorie Twinkie in no time! I can already feel my pants tightening.

Um, is that kid okay? You’re not feeding him ONLY Twinkies, right? Because my brother was raised on nothing but Little Debbie Star Crunches and that did not work out very well for him. Also, what happens when I want to make my SECOND party-size Twinkie? Because now that I already have the pan, where do I get more Twinkie cake and creme mixes? Or did you not expect anyone to make a second giant Twinkie? Because if that’s the case I feel like I was seriously underestimated.

Wood-fired outdoor oven with digital thermometer + steam injector is every pizza lover’s dream!

Never settle for a compromised wood-fired pizza in the outdoors again. Gozney, the experts at manufacturing pizza ovens for chefs and restaurants, has unveiled a gorgeous wood-fired outdoor oven for your backyard, or wherever you please to place it. Now, you can prepare delicious pies for friends and family without worrying about allotting large space or ventilation.

Dubbed the Dome, this compact oven by Gozney is very versatile. It is a professional-grade outdoor oven designed to work effortlessly for experienced chefs and novice ones alike. Whether you have guests over on a Sunday afternoon or have a family dinner, Gozney Dome can be there to take care of the cooking needs as long you have wood to burn. Even though wood-fired cooking is ideal in an outdoor setting, if that’s not what the kids want – turn the dial and switch to the built-in gas burner and continue cooking at temperatures up to 500°C. You can roast, steam, smoke, bake or BBQ inside the 25- x 24- x 28-inch Dome that includes a digital thermometer – a big upgrade over gimmicky ovens designed for the outdoors!

On the outside, the Dome uses an ultra-durable ceramic bounded coating that protects it from water and UV rays. On the inside, for your cooking needs – is an adjustable air vent, insulation for heat retention, and a stone floor. The Dome comes with its own stand and features a steam injector to keep your bread from losing too much moisture while baking. Weighing almost 58kg, the Gozney Dome will start shipping in March next year. At launch, Dome will be available in olive and bone white colorway. The wood only oven will go for £999 (~ $1,294) while the wood and gas model will cost £1,199 (~ $1,553) – let’s start saving up!

Delicious by design: This silicone bundt cake mold combines geometry and confectionery!

So much of the act of eating food happens with your eyes, that there are sciences regarding how food can be presented to help them taste delicious because they look appealing. Food can be designed to take you on a gastronomical journey, and simply placing food on something as basic as a white plate can help accentuate flavors because the colors look more vibrant. The T&T Cake Mold for WMF sort of builds on the same principle by making confectionery look incredible. Designed in the bundt-cake format, the T&T’s mold is almost like a work of design and architecture (and highly reminiscent of Dinara Kasko‘s work), using geometric shapes and patterns to make each of the cake’s 8 ‘pillars’ look absolutely unique and exquisite. The cake’s silicone mold is perfect for casting intricate textures, and allows you to eject the confectionery post-baking with incredible detail. The cakes look rather awe-striking on their own, but coat them with some mirror glaze and they should look absolutely ready for Instagram!

This baking set is designed to make the process educational for kids

As children when my sister and I wanted to bake during holidays, my mother would always have a mini panic attack. Her good utensils and big appliances in the care of children would mean stress rather than fun for her. The existing baking utensils for kids are either pretend versions of the actual equipment or a simple set of bowls that are not enough to induce excitement. However, the right design can transform a family bonding experience and teach kids how to cherish the baking process as much as licking the icing. The Elf’s Hat delivers exactly that with it’s carefully crafted baking utensils for children.

The Elf’s Hat has been designed on the concept of board games and has tweaked it to fit in the theme of baking so children can adapt to it easily while having fun. The utensils were reimagined to encourage children and make them curious about learning the process. Each utensil was recreated with shapes and colors that were joyful but also ergonomic for kids to handle. The scale has been taken out and the measuring has been made easier with highlighted grooves. The mesh has been combined with the container so children can easily overturn ingredients without destroying the kitchen. The tool stand and corresponding tools also have grooves so that they don’t slip away easily. There is a little umbrella-like structure on the handle of the tools which catches the dripping batter and keeps your hands clean – something that adults need too!

I particularly love the molds in this set – the seven cookie molds are shaped like puzzle pieces and the cake is shaped like a crown. Even the handles have been created keeping in mind how children perceive, process and behave with objects so using the elements of this baking set would be intuitive to them. This has inspired me to bake and since we are all staying in, you can have your cake and eat it too.
