There’s a certain, undeniable convenience to the plastic bottle. It’s easy to just take off the shelf, drink from, and then throw away once you’re done. You don’t need to worry about carrying a bulky bottle along with you that occupies the same amount of space, even when empty. The convenience of plastic is addictive, but it comes at a price. There’s a garbage island the size of Texas floating around in the pacific sea, COVERED with plastic bottles we used and threw away without batting an eyelid. Plastic bottles are preferred because they’re more convenient than carrying your own bulky empty bottles around with you, but the Origami Bottle may have a solution to that convenient problem.
Designed to be reusable, but more importantly, be collapsible, the Origami Bottle folds down to 20% of its original size when not in use. Small enough to easily fit into any bag without occupying much space, the Origami Bottle neatly folds down to a nice, portable puck that’s easy and convenient to carry around. When you need to fill it up, the bottle opens up to a full size of 25oz (750ml).
Made from a food-safe non-toxic TPE, the Origami bottle is characterized by its network of creases that cover the bottle’s sides. These creases act as fold lines, allowing the bottle to collapse and expand whenever you want it, but here’s where the Origami bottle’s design shines through. When entirely expanded, the bottle remains rigid and upright, thanks to the Origami bottle’s curved walls which become robust when the bottle’s opened out. When you need to fold the bottle down, just unscrew the cap and push against the horizontal crease lines and the bottle goes back to its small, portable form factor.
The bottle comes with a spill-proof leakproof cap along with an integrated carry-ring that lets you suspend it from your backpacks. Perfect for hot beverages as well as cold drinks, the Origami bottle can be used as a regular bottle during your day-to-day outings as well as while traveling outdoors. Aside from helping take plastic bottles out of circulation, the Origami is made from a proprietary material called Arnitel Eco, allowing it to be “closed-loop recyclable”, which means the bottle’s materials can be 100% recycled to the same quality. Pretty neat, eh? Did I also mention they come in a bunch of colors, and since they’re collapsible they’re also ridiculously easy to clean??
There’s certainly an element of luxury that overlaps the perfume and watch industry. They both are objects of desire and symbols of high-society. They even often have the same points of inspiration, with the liberal use of faceted glass, chrome, and gemstones if you’re looking to really up the ante… but there’s obviously a distinction between a watch and a perfume bottle. Lee Huang’s conceptual watch created for Issey Miyake blurs that distinction.
The conceptual Issey Miyake watch cleverly uses glass as a material for the watch body, as opposed to stainless steel. Borrowing the fluted design texture from most top-of-the-line fragrance bottle designs, the watch’s thick glass body comes with a unique textured rim that reflects light just the way a fancy looking glass bottle does. The glass body (and the dial cover too) come with a high refractive index that creates enough parallax to give it the appeal of a perfume bottle, along with just a slight tinge of frosting that actually helps cut the internal reflections to retain the watch’s minimalist appeal. In keeping with the timepiece’s clean, almost zen-ike design, a plain white leather strap suspends the crystalesque time-telling beauty to your wrist. Looks beautiful, doesn’t it?!
They say the soft-drink brand’s success didn’t begin until their adoption of the famous hourglass bottle and the iconic red and white cursive logo, but this bottle right here represent’s Coca-Cola’s humble beginnings. In a way, this is a long-overdue throwback that spans over a century of good times with the cola-based carbonated beverage. Its latest release? a series of cocktail mixers packaged in Coca-Cola’s first ever bottle design, a combination of the past and the future, in one glorious bottle!
Referred to as the Hutchinson bottle (designed way back in 1894), the straight-sided bottle with a bulbous neck is now being reissued as the packaging for Coca-Cola’s series of mixers. The bottle design possesses an aesthetic that complements its bar-friendly category, making it the perfect choice. Available in four distinct flavor profiles, Woody, Spicy, Herbal, and Smoky, and designed to be used with dark spirits like whisky and dark rum, the bottles come with a white label and a taped cap, quite a deviation from the soft-drink’s otherwise red-heavy design, but more of a hat-tip to the drink’s association with mixology. We can’t wait to see more of these bottles (and probably taste the mixers too)… you know, for strictly design-appreciation purposes!
The automatic self-charging Solar Powered Hydrade Bottle, sounds very high-tech, but is very simple to use. This insulated bottle keeps a tab on your hydration levels and monitors your intake, and even donates to charity based on how good you are with your drink!
We all know that keeping yourself hydrated during the day is important, and yet we need apps and technology to help us stay on point. Keeping this in mind, the Hydrade uses a unique technology and software so that you can measure your water intake, using the several different sensors, that are placed between the cylinders of the double wall insulation. The sensors are so sensitive that they track drinking of water, or if you are pouring it out, or drinking water with ice!
I imagine that there are just a few things that are worse than drinking lukewarm beverages in the heat. Named as Pantone color of the year for 2019, Living Coral is an animating and life-affirming coral hue that signifies light-heartedness and positivity. The color is the kind that instantly makes one happy, with its touch of vibrance and warmth, and the minute you add it to a product, it stands out. Companies have, for long, used the coral color to make products look and feel youthful, and to make them add a splash of color to a space. Living Coral’s beauty especially lies in the fact that it goes well in any domain, fashion, interiors, consumer electronics, or even appliances. Heck, I’d wager that a Ferrari with a Living Coral paint job would look absolutely dope too. Almost a month into 2019, we’re here to take a look at ten of our favorite products that have wholeheartedly embraced Coral as a hue, using it wholly, or in part, to create a product that stands out, and looks great while doing so! __
01. Apple Watch Series 4 Nectarine Sports Loop The Nectarine Sports Loop (along with the Watch Series 4) came just weeks before Pantone debuted their color of the year, and it’s almost as if Apple either knew, or they had some spectacular CMF Designers who just happened to feel that the color absolutely did justice to the Watch. There’s a silicone version of the Nectarine band too, but we prefer this woven nylon loop that’s breathable yet sweat-resistant. And it’s compatible with all versions of the Apple Watch!
02. Google Home & Home Mini (Living Coral Edition) The coral version of Google’s smart speakers were released shortly after Pantone announced the color of 2019. While the Mini comes completely coated in the Living Coral hue (with a rather remarkable contrast between the woven texture on top and the hard plastic at the bottom), the Google Home does a dual-tone, with white on top, and the addition of a detachable coral fabric grille at the bottom. Don’t make me pick favorites. I like them both.
03. Urbanears Plattan Coral On Ear Headphones The tragedy of these headphones is that Urbanears only produced the Coral edition as a limited run. I still maintain that the Plattan headphones look absolutely heavenly in their coral color, treading a fine line between sporty and fashionable with a color that isn’t as red as the Beats headphones, but is the perfect hue to look absolutely dapper. Yes, dapper’s the word.
04. Retroduck Q Wireless Charging Dock Unlike its previous, wired version, the Retroduck Q comes with two changes. Firstly, the dock works wirelessly, charging your phones simply by placing them on the retro TV-esque stand… and secondly, the Retroduck Q ditches its ancestor’s more orange-heavy color for a delightful coral version, or as they call it, Carmine Red. The Retroduck Q just finished its round of crowdfunding and is still under development at the time of writing this article. We’ll be sure to drop a link when they’re ready to buy online!
05. Kvell Pop Clock Rather strangely titled Pop, the Kvell clock actually comes in a single color, making it quite the opposite of pop… but it makes up for that with the use of such an incredibly rich hue that I’m sure it’ll pop off any wall you mount it on. I’d recommend a white or light teal colored backdrop for this beauty. Even a light blue would work, given that corals are originally found against a backdrop of oceanic blue.
06. Dot&Bo Coral Pantone Clock While most products embrace a hue, Dot&Bo’s Coral Pantone Clock embraces the entire shade card! With multiple hues arranged around the face of the clock, Dot&Bo’s timepiece is much more subtle than Kvell’s Pop Clock. After all, in-your-face vibrant decor isn’t for all homes.
07. Vespa Coral Visor 2.0 Helmet Vespa, the brand, stands on two pillars. Retro-Italian design, and an absolutely delicious color palette. The Visor 2.0 helmet has its share of both. Designed to pair perfectly with the adorable Italian legend-of-a-scooter, the Visor 2.0 Coral helmet will protect your brain and will blow the brains of pedestrians as they catch a glimpse of the Coral-colored helmet blurring past. Pairs well with a coral colored Vespa and the Italian countryside. Both sold separately.
08. Hip Bottle by Karim Rashid Rashid was using vibrant hues like Coral long before Pantone named it the color of the year. A major part of Karim Rashid’s design legacy is his use of CMF as an absolute weapon. Take the Hip Bottle for instance. Add any other pastel color to the Hip Bottle and chances are it probably won’t stand out. Its form is simple, and the bottle isn’t as edgy as most sports bottles out there… but carefully drop the Coral hue on it and the Hip looks stunning. Also available in 5 other colors that don’t match up to the sheer beauty of the Coral variant.
09. Bird of Paradise (2018) by KitchenAid I could totally imagine myself walking into a kitchen with a tropical teal wallpaper with pineapple graphics on it, and surrounded by KitchenAid’s coral-colored appliances. Kitchenaid, in fact, began its own Color of the Year series last year, and believe it or not, Coral was their color of the year for 2018. Titled the Bird of Paradise, the entire collection of kitchen appliances sports the beautiful coral hue, right from the range of blenders to the stand mixer that I personally love most, probably because of its distinctive design, and my obsession for meringues (what, I’m human).
10. Pantone Color of the Year Mug (2019) I’d be remiss if I didn’t include a product from Pantone’s own catalog. Every year, along with their announcement of the COTY (Color of the Year), Pantone also releases their own merchandise, from notebooks to thumb drives to mugs, that feature the Color of the Year in its Pantone-branded color accuracy. The mugs, however, are a standout because notebooks are too basic and thumb drives are practically obsolete. Besides, look at that mug and tell me it isn’t simply the most eye-catching mug ever.
The Chameleon bottle just makes owning a bottle and drinking the liquid stored in the bottle fun, which is a difficult thing to begin with. It’s challenging to gamify something as basic as hydration, but the Chameleon bottle does it with a simple trick. Thermally-reactive paint! The bottle comes in one of three colors, and is white when warm, and colorful when cold. Fill your bottle with warm coffee, tea, or a cold beverage like a juice or just good old chilled water (infuse it for even more of a twist). As you fill your liquid into the bottle, you literally see the color changing before your eyes, not only giving your bottle an interesting altering-avatar that’s fun to observe, but also allowing the opaque bottle to actually show you the levels of the liquid inside too! As you continuously take sips from your bottle (and believe me, you’re going to!) the level of the liquid drops, changing the color of the bottle along with it, creating a constantly morphing gradient as you fill, empty, and refill your bottle, just because staying hydrated is such an entertaining activity!
The Chameleon bottle is an especially fun bottle for children, who will definitely be bewildered and bewitched by this thermochromic magic. It comes with a leash, making it easy to carry, and even a silicone sleeve that keeps your hand from burning if you store something hot in the bottle. The sleeve even comes with a running slot on the side that lets you see the bottle’s rising and falling color level. The 600ml steel bottle can be infinitely reused, is leakproof, dishwasher safe, and is a sure-fire way to keep you (and even kids) hydrated just because you’re eager to see (and show off) the Chameleon’s changing colors!
An empty bottle can often be quite a nuisance. It’s essentially a useless, hollow, bulky and heavy container that holds nothing, but occupies space in your bag. Space that could be used to carry other valuable stuff. While this isn’t an incredibly burdening problem, it’s an annoyance and an inconvenience that man could do without, so we can focus on the real issues (like global warming, or relocating to Mars); and that’s where the Space Shaker helps us. It takes our minds off the burden of space-occupying empty bottles so we can perhaps achieve interplanetary travel a little bit faster!
Made using a bellow, the same kind you’d see in accordions and jack-in-the-boxes, the Space Shaker is a 600ml bottle that collapses down to practically a third of its size when empty. The Breezeye has a unique and innovative way of guiding a user into applying eyedrops perfectly every single time. While most redesigns in this domain aim at having an intermediary component that holds the bottle directly over your eye and keeps it open, Weinan Yang’s Breezeye is simple, smart, and efficient every time.
What the Breezeye does is notice a key failure point that standard eyedrop bottles miss. When you’re putting drops in your eye, your eye’s reflexes are usually on high-alert, given that a foreign substance is entering it. Holding a bottle directly above said eye gets your eye blinking and you flinching involuntarily, and the fact that the bottle is suspended in mid-air makes aiming very difficult. The Breezeye’s unique design lets it rest on the bridge of your nose. The design of the bottle allows it to align itself with your eye, while the fact that it’s resting on your nose means the bottle is far more steady. You eventually apply the drops by squeezing the opposite end of the bottle that’s directly above your other eye, allowing you to see how hard you’re pressing the bottle, while also cleverly distracting you from the reflex action of blinking right before the drops fall!
Trying to cut back on soda is just a little bit harder when the packaging looks this good! What you see here is the official Coca-Cola bottle for 2018.
The design by Tommaso Ceschi was chosen as the winner out of 463 entries to a contest hosted by Elite. The metal bottle will keep hot drinks hot and cold drinks cold, making it appropriate to use year round. A standout feature are its “built-in” bubbles that serve as both an aesthetic and functional element that enhances grip. Available in four different versions, Regular (Red), Light (Silver), Zero (Black) and Life (Green), there’s one to represent each Coca-Cola brand.
