Stay Fresh Anytime, Anywhere with Stylish Wearable Aroma Diffuser Pins

The sense of smell is easily taken for granted compared to sight and even hearing, but odors and scents actually have an often subtle yet significant effect on our moods and even our health. Bad smells can throw us off our equilibrium, while aromatic scents can either soothe or energize us. Unfortunately, we have little to no control over what we smell or even how we smell during the day, not unless we carry a bottle of perfume with us all the time. A more practical solution would be to have a tiny amount of your favorite fragrance on or near you throughout the day, which is what this ingenious pin offers in an inconspicuous button-shaped design.

Aromatic oil diffusers have become quite fashionable these days, coming in all shapes, sizes, and features. All of them, however, are confined to being used in rooms, often placed on a flat surface like a table or shelf. You could bring a small bottle of your favorite oil with you, but those oils are quite strong if you don’t find a way to diffuse the scent, which is what a diffuser is made for. Portable aroma diffusers are, unfortunately, still bulky and inconvenient to use, especially when you still have to take them out of your bag or purse and put them down on some surface.

The ALMA aroma pin is a simple yet elegant solution that lets you enjoy the gentle fragrance of your aromatic oils without lifting a finger. The pins are actually tiny containers that can hold a pinch of cotton where you drop some of that oil. This effectively diffuses the scent and spreads it around the button automatically; no need to put a container down or hold it in your hand. It’s like your own personal bubble of fragrance that follows you everywhere.

The pins are shaped like rather thick buttons, so it’s actually easy to disguise them and pin them on any soft material, including clothes, hats, bags, and more. Each piece is carved out of a single block of aluminum and is handmade by skilled craftsmen pouring hours of attention and love into each and every single pin. The pins are then dyed using “alumite” which gives them their lustrous colors. This process results in variations in color depending on the production lot, which gives each pin somewhat of a unique visual personality, in turn.

Thanks to their discreet, button-shaped design, these pins can be just as subtle as the scents they diffuse. Whether you want to walk around smelling fragrant all day, want to always smell your favorite oils wherever you go, or make sure your apparel and accessories don’t pick up bad odors, these stylish pins will make your day. With just a drop or two of essential oil, the aroma diffuser pin will let you carry your own bubble of fragrance whenever and wherever you go.

iPhone 16 Action Button could open up new features, available on all models

Although it might not be as prominent as Touch ID, the notch, or the more recent Dynamic Island, the physical mute switch has become one of the most loved features of the iPhone right from day one. It is one of those small features that proved just how attentive Apple was to the little details that significantly improved the lives of their customers. After more than a decade in service, that switch was eventually replaced by the Action button in the iPhone 15 Pro models this year, but of course, that isn’t the end of the story. According to sources, next year’s iPhones will have an even more talented Action Button and best of all, it will be available on all models right off the bat.

Designer: Apple (via MacRumors)

The physical mute switch delivered peace of mind by letting iPhone users switch from ring to silent mode and vice-versa with a literal flick of a switch, saving you from stress and embarrassment in times when your phone shouldn’t be audible. Presuming you know what the current sound mode is, you don’t even need to look at the switch’s position to push it. You can do it while your iPhone is still in your pocket, and no one will be the wiser.

There might be some fans who are sad to it go, but that switch has ascended to become a button. It can now do more than just switch to silent mode since it can be mapped to some actions, hence its name. Apple had some ambitious plans for the Action Button, but the lack of time meant it had to make do with a simple physical button and limit it to the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max. But now that the cat is out of the bag, it is free to push forward with its original plans.

Although nothing’s set in stone yet, Apple might change the Action Button from a mechanical button to a capacitive one with force sensitivity. This is similar to the technology used in the previous Touch ID home button as well as the Force Touch trackpad on MacBooks. This revamped Action Button would be able to distinguish between a simple press, a long press, and a hard press, so you’d be able to assign at least two actions to the same button (long press is set to switching between ring and silent by default).

The exact implementation details are, of course, still up in the air, but it would be a very big improvement over the current basic implementation. Even better, those same sources claim that this new Action Button will make its way to all iPhone 16 models, both the standard and Pro models, so there wouldn’t be a need for envious buyers. Again, all of these are still unofficial, so Apple could still pull the plug from the plan if it doesn’t deem the feature to be ready by the time it locks down the iPhone 16 features next year.

This cute gadget is the physical manifestation of checking off a task

Almost everyone has a smartphone these days, and each of these devices has some form of a to-do list app or another. That said, not everyone uses these apps to keep track of things they need to get done, and some don’t even have such a list of tasks at all. There are, however, many proponents of keeping even the simplest of task lists, not just for the sake of writing down those to-dos. There is evidence of a subtle yet effective psychological benefit to checking off boxes or striking out tasks, something that doesn’t translate cleanly to their digital counterparts. That’s the kind of mind trick that this simplistic-looking device uses, offering a distraction-free way of getting addicted to getting your to-dos done.

There is definitely something satisfying in the physical act of marking a task as completed. Sure, you can tap on your phone’s screen to do the same, but it requires almost no effort to make that action really meaningful. Perhaps it is the physical activity paired with the sense of accomplishment that gives us that dose of dopamine, which means that it might not require pen and paper to pull that same trick off in other forms.

PRESS is a concept for a device that brings a bit of that phenomenon in a new way that bridges the physical and digital worlds. It has a minimalist design that leaves no room for guesswork on what it does, especially with a big orange button that simply says “Press” on it. Of course, its actual implementation might not be so simplistic, and the theories behind it are quite profound as well.

In a nutshell, this device shows a single line of text displayed in an almost retro LCD-like font. There is a small part above the text for a 2×2 matrix of numbers representing the time in 24-hour format. All these displays are “hidden” beneath the surface so that the gadget looks completely clean when there is nothing to show.

The idea is for PRESS to show a single task at a time and the time when it needs to be done. Ideally, it could be a recurring task that happens at the same time daily, like writing or reading at night. When the time for doing the task nears, it will display that data. And when the task is done, you simply press on the orange button to mark it as completed, almost like those buzzers that contestants smash on TV game shows.

It is a pair of triggers and actions that can help develop a habit over time. The design does leave plenty of room for possible features, like automatically syncing data with a phone or computer. Those, however, can just be icing on the cake since PRESS really focuses on delivering that little bit of euphoria whenever you complete a task and press that big, orange button.

Textured buttons help the visually impaired understand what colored clothes they’re wearing

Just because you have a visual impairment doesn’t mean you can’t look good! These textured buttons allow the wearers to understand the colors of their clothes simply by touching them. With a little practice and guidance, they can then create color palettes and combinations that allow them to look good and highlight their fashion-forward personality!

Dubbed the HUEPIN, these uniquely designed buttons help the wearer understand what color clothes they’re wearing. All they really have to do is attach/sew the right buttons to the clothes once they’ve been bought. Once the entire wardrobe’s cataloged and color-coordinated, wearers can easily ‘feel colors’ to help them choose their outfits efficiently and tastefully. The HUEPINs come with specific shapes to indicate colors, and have wavy textures to help the wearer understand how bright or faded the color is. Wearers can then create pairings of contrasting colors, monochromes, triads, or a wide variety of other styles. With a little practice and help, visually-impaired wearers can easily dress their best despite their impairments! Rather wonderful, isn’t it??

The HUEPIN is a winner of the iF Design Talent Award for the year 2022.
