AI Creates Realistic Portraits of Cartoon Characters

Cartoon characters: you can’t help but wonder what they might look like in real life. And now, thanks to a project by Brazilian artist Hidreley Leli Diao, we don’t have and can use that brainpower for more important things like trying to decide what to order for dinner. I’m leaning towards Mexican or Mediterranean, but will probably debate in my head until both restaurants are closed, and I have to settle for a bowl of cereal.

Using Photoshop and three different artificial intelligence photo editing apps (FaceApp, Gradient, and Remini), the programs scoured the internet for photos of real people that have features matching the cartoon source material, and then Hidreley combined those features into the lifelike portraits you see here. The marvel of modern technology!

Does anybody else find the finished results a little unsettling? Like maybe this was a can of worms that shouldn’t have been opened? Because I’ve opened cans of worms, I wish I hadn’t before. Mostly in the car on the way to a fishing trip. Those wiggly little suckers are quick on the car floor.

Iron Studios Dungeons & Dragons Tiamat Demi Statue: Literal Fivehead

Iron Studios has a treat for die-hard and deep-pocketed Dungeons & Dragons fans. The figure maker’s 1/20-scale Tiamat Demi statue features the legendary tabletop RPG monster as it was depicted in the franchise’s 1980s cartoon. Naturally, the statue also includes figurines of the cartoon’s six protagonists: Hank, Diana, Shiela, Eric, Presto, and Bobby (and Bobby’s pet Uni).

Each statue is primarily made of polystone that’s been handpainted. It stands at a towering 22″ tall and weighs 40 freaking pounds.

My only gripe with the figure is that you can see the gaps between the pieces if you look closely. But this is probably going on a shelf to be admired far from greasy fingers, that shouldn’t be a big concern. You can pre-order the statue from Iron Studios for $1,400 (USD).

A $1,000 Life-Size Skeletor Bust: Perfect For Your Castle Greyskull

Because no home is complete without a life-size supervillain bust, Sideshow has teamed up with collectibles studio Tweeterhead to produce this full-scale Skeletor bust. The piece is available for pre-order for $1,000 and Sideshow expects to ship sometime between October and December 2021. Just don’t plan on trying to snatch them all up to resell like PS5’s, because there’s a two-per-customer limit.

Measuring approximately 28″ tall, 17″ deep and 31″ wide, the bust includes a posable/removable fabric hood so you can display Skeletor in all his skully goodness should you choose to do so. Still, for $1,000 though I do wish his eyes lit up and you could press a button to make him laugh and/or joke on He-Man.

I think we can all agree Skeletor here is going to look fantastic gazing down upon my living room from the mantle. I mean, sure, grandma’s ashes will have to scoot over a bit, but I’m sure she won’t mind making room for a thousand-dollar bust of a kid’s cartoon character.

Cleverly Crafted Tom & Jerry Flattened Tom Stair-Runner Rug

Inspired by a scene from a classic Tom & Jerry cartoon where Tom gets crushed paper-thin on the stairs by a giant Jerry, artist rugsoda has created an almost identical likeness of Tom in the form of this ‘Flat Cat’ stair-runner rug. It’s the perfect rug for letting guests know there may be a mouse ready to bonk you on the head with an oversized mallet around any corner.

Each $200 rug is handmade and measures 22″ x 55″, the perfect size to recreate flattened Tom from the cartoon scene, and I just bought one. Should I be really be buying $200 rugs? My wife says no, but my bank account says PAYMENT DECLINED: INSUFFICIENT FUNDS.

There’s no denying the flattened Tom rug is cool, but what I’d really like to see is a flattened Wyle E. Coyote rug and a coffee table on top that looks like an ACME anvil. How amazing would that be? Shoot, with ideas this good I should probably get some interior design business cards printed.
