This Knuckle-ring citrus-juicer lets you make lemonade like a gangster

Don’t get any ideas, tough guy, the only thing this Ring Juicer is meant to threaten is your Vitamin C deficiency. Designed by Object Rights, a quirky design studio based out of New York and Istanbul, the Ring Juicer is a ceramic wearable that fits on your fingers, allowing you to pummel the juice out of a lemon, lime, orange, grapefruit, or tangerine (add your own citrus fruit to the list). Available in multiple colors, the Ring Juicer adds a fun, almost sadistic element of interaction as you literally get to torturously extract the juices out of your fruit of choosing (I believe it’s pretty effective), and when you’re done, it sits neatly on its flat surface, adding a bit of visual zing to your kitchen worktop.

Meet the Conchiglie – a quirky little lemon squeezer that’s inspired by pasta!

Imagine you’re Jon Favreau. You have Scarlett Johansson sitting on your couch looking decidedly seductive, admiring you as you prepare a hearty bowl of Spaghetti Aglio e Olio as a midnight snack for the both of you. You’ve strained the noodles, prepared the garlic oil, mixed it all together, and sprinkled a bit of parsley all over. All the dish needs is a dash of lemon, and you bust out the Conchiglie lemon squeezer to finish your pasta with a bit of tang… it’s all just perfect!

The Conchiglie is a neat, conch-shaped device inspired directly by the conchiglie pasta. Colored in yellow and molded out of food-grade silicone, the Conchiglie comes with a hollow inner that’s perfectly sized for a lemon-half. Slip the lemon in and squeeze it from the outside and the Conchiglie does a wonderful job of juicing the lemon without getting your hands all sticky and messy. The silicone construction gives you the friction and grip you need, and a tiny strainer at the end of the conch helps catch the lemon seeds as you juice away. And when you’re done impressing miss googly-eyed Scarlett Johansson, just chuck the Conchiglie in a dishwasher and it’ll clean right up! Although you should probably discard those lemon seeds before you do…

This citrus juicer floats my boat!

koizol_ahoi_1

The AHOI showcases an abstract combination of two identities, turning them into one form. On the one hand, it’s a pretty cute looking toy boat. It has the origami-style edgy design too, and comes in a wonderful set of colors, reminiscent of the colorful paper we used to make boats out of as children. While it visually represents a boat, it’s functionally a citrus juicer. The sail of the boat is shaped like a traditional juicer head (although it doesn’t look out of place with the rest of the boat’s design) and works against a cross-section of a citrus fruit, gathering all the juice in the boat’s concavity. The boat’s design not only collects the juice, its pointed sides also let you pour the juice out easily. Makes sense all around, doesn’t it?! The AHOI comes in two sizes. A slightly larger version for oranges, and a smaller one for lemons and limes.

The AHOI by Koziol is just brilliantly playful, and whether you’re a child or adult, you’re going to love using the juicer… in fact, the only way it could be possibly better is if there were a citrusy, Yellow Submarine edition!

A ‘fanta’stic fruity fan!

citrus_fan_1

The Creamsicle’s inspiration is pretty apparent. Its warm orange tones and the way the blades orient themselves around the rim rather than the hub creates a negative space that gives it a citrus-y feeling. While the fan itself is a hubless fan with a design language that’s familiar because of Dyson’s work in the area… its blade design steals the show with its refreshing, fun, tangerine nature. It almost makes the fan itself look cool and refreshing like a glass of Fanta or Tang. Perhaps that perception carries forward to the air the fan pushes out, making the Creamsicle fan seem more efficient at cooling you down than say any regular fan.

The Creamsicle fan, aside from being hubless, comes with a pivot at the base of the ring, allowing you to position the fan to point anywhere. The blades come in a translucent plastic, making them look more and more like their citric inspiration. I wonder if they come in more colors! I would love to see a beautiful, fresh lime green variant!

Perfect for when life gives you lemons!

lemon_drop_squeezer_1

If there’s one thing worse than stepping barefoot on a Lego brick, it’s squeezing a lemon with your hands when you’ve cut your finger a few days before. Conventional lemon squeezers help, but they don’t extract all the juice, and you eventually have to squeeze the last bits out with your hands.

The Lemon Drop is unconventional, but looks like it would do a thorough job, and it does! The squeezer rubs against the cut portion of the lemon. All you have to do is apply pressure to get the juice out! Also, since you don’t really have to go hands-on on the lemon, you don’t really get much juice on your hands, but you get all the juice out of the lemon!

Miracle Frooties Review: Sour Becomes Sweet

If you’ve ever bitten into a wedge of lemon or lime, you know just how pucker-inducing the experience can be. I figured that the only way to offset the tartness was with some sort of sugar or artificial sweetener. But thanks to an unusual West African fruit plant known as Synsepalum Dulcificum, these and other sour foods become instantly sweet without adding a sweetener.

I’ve been aware of similar products to Miracle Frooties for some time, but I’ve never had the opportunity to try them out, so when they offered to send me a pack, I figured I’d give ’em a whirl.

miracle_frooties_2zoom in

First things first, you don’t chomp on these like candy – they’re packaged like pills, and you need to let one dissolve on your tongue over the course of a couple of minutes. Once you do, your sense of taste is altered in the most pleasant of ways. I took a freshly-cut lemon and lime and proceeded to chomp down on a wedge of each like nobody’s business. But what was this? No squinchy face? Nope. Instead, the lemon tasted like sweet lemon curd or maybe a glass of sweetened, fresh-squeezed lemonade. The lime – key lime pie. I kid you not. These things really work.

But then, I figured, the effect can’t last more than a few minutes, right? After all, the plant-based extract in these pills coats your tongue and surely that would be washed away by the citrus juice. But then I waited 10 minutes, and tried again. The fruits were even sweeter the second time. Another 10 minutes passed. Still sweet. Then I tried one more time around the 35 minute mark, and only then had the sweetening effect started to fade. Even still, the fruits were sweeter than they normally taste. In fact, my ability to taste the purely sour flavor didn’t return for about an hour.

Neat, eh? I didn’t get to try eating any other tart stuff after taking the Miracle Frooties, but I’m sure sour cherries, grapefruit and raspberries would be amazing. They’re also said to improve the flavor of bitter medicines, and even enhance some veggies. What was interesting is that I ate a few normally sweet items after the Frooties and it didn’t alter or increase their sweetness. Instead, they just tasted like they always do, so it’s not like adding sugar – it’s truly turning sour and bitter into sweet and delightful.

If you’d like to try some Miracle Frooties for yourself, you can buy them in packs of 10 for $12.95 to $13.95(USD) over at Miracle Fruit Hut. I recommend going for the XL size, since the dosage will last much longer for only a buck more.

The Sweetest Sour Lemon Squeezer

We squeeze lemons with our hands sideways, so why should our kitchen lemon squeezers go top to bottom?! There are benefits doing it our natural way, and for this reason, Citro is the first sideways squeezer! Unlike its top-to-bottom rivals, it leaves no juice left behind in the “bottom” half of the lemon. Because of its positioning, it’s also more intuitive to use.

My Orange Squeeze

I really don’t see the point in an electric citrus fruit squeezer. I own one and end up putting in manual labor to hold the orange in place with firm grip. I may as well invest in a classy juicer like the Edwin; it is sustainable and made from smooth ceramic and wood. Squeezing the fruit will give my fingers good exercise and no more worrying about repairs! Unless I get clumsy and break the ceramic component, I guess I’m all set.
