This swirling orb of ice helps make your drinks look amazing and cool faster too!

This could be the mildly delusional me speaking but oh, what I’d give to be in a crowded bar, not being able to hear myself think while sipping on an Old Fashioned and admiring the swirling orb of ice in it. As perfect as that orb does tend to look with the orange peel above it and the alcohol around it, it seems like it could be perfected, be engineered to look better, and perform better.

It isn’t often that something as mundane as an ice-mold wins a design award, but it seems like the Icy Galaxy deserves recognition. Designed to look like a beautiful wavy orb of ice, the Icy Galaxy sphere does two things – It creates an interesting interaction with the liquid it’s immersed in, especially when the liquid slides into the orb’s multiple crevasses, but at the same time, it also helps rapidly cool drinks down by increasing the icy orb’s surface area (similar to how motorcycle engines come with fins that increase their surface area allowing wind to cool them more effectively). The orbs are crafted using silicone+plastic molds that create two spheres at a time, and the resulting ice spheres look absolutely mesmerizing when suspended in colorful liquids… sort of like galaxies within your glass!

The Icy Galaxy Ice Mold is a winner of the A’ Design Award for the year 2020.

This coaster has an AI bartender that guides you through the cocktail making process

I’ll be honest. That title above gets progressively more unpredictable with each word… and yes, I’m completely sober as I write this article.

This is the Barsys Coaster, a smart coaster with a mini weighing-machine and an AI inside it that coaches you through the fine cocktail-mixing process. The coaster works with the Barsys app, which lets you select a recipe, while the coaster itself sits on a table with an empty glass above it. The app tells you how to build your cocktail, by telling you what to pour into your glass, while the coaster and its weight-sensor lets you know when to stop pouring. The incredibly precise weight-sensor within the coaster can know exactly when you’ve poured the right amount of gin, or vodka, or orange juice, while the app itself then tells you to stop pouring and proceed to the next step. The result? Precisely crafted cocktails courtesy an AI bartender and your passion for drinking fine cocktails from the comfort of your own house as Netflix cues the next episode of whatever it is you’re watching!

Barsys Smart Coaster tells you how to pour the perfect cocktail

Mixing a cocktail requires skill and precision -- or the Barsys Smart Coaster. The new device is a small disc that connects to the Barsys app. To mix a drink, you simply place a glass or pitcher on the smart coaster and select the drink you'd like to...

AT-AT Liquor Cabinet Perfect for Serving Up Your Johnnie (Imperial) Walker Black

I’ve always wanted one of those fancy liquor cabinets in my house. I’m not talking about the type that look like an old globe either. I want a really cool one. Perhaps something really original, like one that looks like an AT-AT Imperial Walker. Oh, what’s that you say? Somebody already beat me to the punch? Damn.

Yep, what you’re looking at here is the most awesome bar for serving up your finest booze – all in the shape of an AT-AT. Luckily, it has yet to be brought down by a snow speeder’s tow cables, as that would be a horrible tragedy. The cabinet appears to be handcrafted from wood and brass, and stands at least 4 or 5 feet tall – unless those guys in the photo are Ewoks disguised as humans.

I know not from whence this tasty morsel of awesome comes, other than the fact that these photos were posted up on imgur back in 2011. If you happen to have been involved in the construction of this monument to geeky greatness, speak up and take credit where credit is due. I’ll be over here in the corner, keeping warm with a Hoth Toddy.

Keurig and Anheuser-Busch work on an in-home beer maker

Just because Keurig didn't succeed with its Kold soda machine doesn't mean it's giving up on the prospect of making cold beverages at home. It's partnering with Anheuser-Busch InBev on developing an "in-home alcohol drink system" -- in other words,...

Somabar Is a Robotic Bartender for Your Home

Face it. We all would like a robotic bartender in our home, but without having to have some guy that looks like robo-Isaac from the Love Boat standing there waiting for our requests all day. Because that would be creepy. So what we need is a robot bartender like Somabar.

This device sits right on your countertop and can mix perfectly proportioned drinks in less than five seconds using up to six liquid ingredients. All you have to do is fill up the six reservoirs called “Soma pods”, with your choice of booze and mixers, then you use the app to tell the machine what liquid is in what pod and it creates a list of cocktails that it can make from them.

Interested? If so, you can pre-order it for $400(USD), but it will cost you $500 after the already funded Kickstarter campaign ends. I don’t know. I mean, you are still doing half the work when you choose the ingredients and fill the pods. Let me know when you can sell me a robot that does all of the work and then will carry me to bed when I’ve had too many.

Perfectly Tipsy

The Hurricane is a fun way to blend and mix your cocktails. Unless you are Bond who likes his Martini shaken not stirred, you can expect this appliance to blend you a mean mojito or a spectacular rum punch. All you need to do is choose your poison and then add in the ingredients as directed. A step-by-step guide is displayed on the screen and it sets the ball rolling for you. Concoct classics like Tom Collins or something new and exotic; just don’t get too carried away with the drinks…that’s all!

Hurricane is a 2012 Electrolux Design Lab shortlisted entry.
