Keurig Just Killed The Coffee-Pod With Their New Biodegradable Compressed Coffee Pucks

Around 2.25 billion cups of coffee are consumed on a daily basis, and even if a fraction of them are produced in Keurig or Nespresso machines, those are a LOT of coffee pods that get thrown in the waste after they’re used. Keurig’s finally tackling this persisting problem with the K-Round, an alternative to the pod that’s biodegradable, plastic-free, and still manages to produce a great brew. The K-Round is essentially a compressed disc or puck of coffee grounds (sort of how your local barista tamps down coffee into a puck), bound together with plant-based materials like cellulose. The K-Rounds go into Keurig’s upcoming machine, the Alta, which can process these rounds, extracting coffee from them without leaving you with a throwaway plastic and metal coffee pod like your regular Keurig machine currently does.

Designer: Keurig

Every company reaches a level of scale where it suddenly becomes difficult to sustain growth, and Keurig’s CEO Bob Gamgort mentioned that the company had reached that point. Creating great coffee is easy, but that isn’t precisely what Keurig does. The company creates great ‘single-serve’ coffee, helping users brew exactly one cup at a time instead of an entire pot and then having to either consume more coffee than needed or throw the rest. The company pioneered the single-serve coffee movement, and now, in order to grow even further, has realized that generating more waste in the form of use-and-throw pods isn’t particularly tenable.

Enter the K-Round, a puck of compressed coffee that achieves a few things. For starters, it does away with the pod entirely, using only plant-based natural materials in its design. The K-Round is entirely biodegradable and leaves no waste apart from a small leftover disc that can easily be composted or discarded with natural waste. But more distinctly, the K-Round reinvents the perception of the pod by allowing users to have a sensorial experience BEFORE the coffee is even brewed. Most coffee pods are shrouded in mystery – nobody knows what’s in them or how they work, and all you really have is a label on top that tells you what’s inside the pod. The K-Round on the other hand, is much more sensorial. Users can actually look at the pod and see how coarse or fine the grounds are, or if they’re light or dark-roasted. The pods also give off a distinct coffee aroma, helping prepare you for the brewing/drinking journey you’re about to embark on, all while keeping the process relatively simple – place the pod in the machine, shut the lid, hit the button, and voila! Barista-level coffee brewed in mere minutes.

The K-Rounds are essentially just roasted/ground coffee that’s been compressed into the shape of a puck, and bound together using a plant-based coating of cellulose and alginate (the same stuff used to create those bursting pearls in boba tea). Different variants also have sorbitol, a form of sugar that’s 50% as sweet as sucrose, and is non-fermenting (you don’t want the coffee turning into alcohol in the pod). The engineers at Keurig Dr. Pepper (yes, that’s the name of the company, I didn’t know they were co-owned either) developed the K-Rounds to be space-saving, shelf-stable, and entirely plant-based, while still ensuring that the resulting coffee tastes great and doesn’t have any underlying undesired flavors or aromas. Their inspiration for the puck shape came from the way baristas tamped down coffee into pucks before loading them into coffee machines. The pucks come in a variety of sizes, depending on the type of brew. Espressos are smaller and flatter, while other ‘larger’ brews like double shots or tall cold-brews result in taller pucks. The K-Rounds currently only work with the upcoming Keurig Alta coffee machine, which can apparently identify each puck and automatically adjust temperature, water-level, and brew time accordingly. Notably, the Alta is designed to be backwards compatible too, and will accept the older use-and-throw K-Cups coffee-pods too. The Alta and K-Rounds don’t have an official date – Keurig says it’s still fine-tuning the two based on consumer feedback. If you want to be a part of the beta test, Keurig’s inviting coffee aficionados to sign up on their website.

Zen-inspired aesthetic coffee maker concept may give you a peaceful morning

One of the best ways to start the day is by enjoying a cup of coffee when you wake up while things haven’t started becoming busy yet. But a lot of times, I wake up late and hurriedly go through my morning routine and sometimes I’m not even able to grab that crucial cup of caffeinated goodness. What if the things that you use for your morning (or evening) coffee routine is something that can bring you an added source of peace and tranquility so your day can actually start (or end) right?

Designer: Suckhand Saren

This is the exact idea behind the concept for a set of coffee makers aptly called Zenbrew. The goal is to achieve a zen-like mood while you’re brewing your coffee and while you’re sipping your cup in peace. Using a combination of minimalist design, elegant aesthetics, and of course much needed functionality. The designer wanted to elevate what is simply the act of brewing coffee into a “sensory experience” but keeping it simple, elegant, and peaceful. The main design inspiration is the hourglass which is not always a symbol of zen but when combined with the minimalist aesthetic, it actually fits the concept.

There seems to be two kinds of coffee makers in the concept. The first one is closer to the usual coffee maker that we see in the market with the carafe with the handle but with a glass dome at the top where the brewing magic happens. The other design seems to be a combination of a pour over device and a bunsen burner. The carafe is a bit smaller and with a straight handle rather than a curved one. Both designs also have a futuristic, space-like feel which may also contribute to the other worldly zen you may experience while brewing and drinking your coffee.

While having coffee makers as aesthetic as this will not guarantee I’ll have a peaceful morning, it might actually help me get up earlier. Having a nice coffee maker, along with delicious coffee beans and other ingredients, are sometimes enough incentive for me to try and have an unhurried morning routine. Wake me up when this concept actually gets made into coffee machines.

With over $1.3 million funded, this tiny portable French Press brews delicious coffee right inside your mug

Sort of like if a French Press and a tea-bag had a baby together, the FinalPress V2 is rapidly becoming the new popular way to brew fresh coffee wherever you go. With a portable, lightweight, all-metal design, the FinalPress V2 gives you the quality of a French Press, but directly inside your coffee cup/mug. All you do is fill the FinalPress with coffee of your choice, shut it, and immerse it in water to begin the infusion process. You can use the FinalPress V2 with hot water or even with cold, for a longer cold-brew. Once done, hit the plunger on top to extract all the water out of the coffee basket, giving you delicious coffee that’s so fresh, it was literally brewed right in your cup.

Now in its second iteration, the FinalPress V2 has the same classic design with a few refined details that improve your brew as well as make cleaning up easier. While the original FinalPress garnered an impressive $405K in funding, the V2 is blowing past its predecessor with over 20,000 backers raising a stunning $1.3 million to bring the FinalPress V2 to life. The reason? Well, French Press machines are nice but they’re clunky and breakable, and your traditional pour-over generates paper-filter waste with each use.

Designed to mitigate both those problems, the FinalPress V2 is a tiny coffee maker that’s designed to go wherever you go, while being all-metal, so there are no wasted paper/cloth filters at the end of your coffee brewing. It works with tea leaves too, although the V2’s fine 200-micron laser-cut mesh is notoriously good at containing small coffee grounds.

The FinalPress V2’s design is about as intuitive as it’s portable. Think of it as your own personal coffee version of a teabag. It comes with a neat, submersible design that fits in any cup or glass, with a slim plunger mechanism that floats above the rim, for easy gripping. The plunger is even thin enough to fit on mason jars with their straw-hole lids, making it a convenient way to carry your coffee around with you.

To use the FinalPress V2, simply fill it with the ground coffee of your choice (up to 35 grams), shut it, and immerse it in water. For a hot brew, stir it around for a couple of minutes, depending on your preferred brew time. For cold brews, leave it for 12-24 hours depending on what intensity you’re looking for. Once you’re done, push down on the plunger to maximize your coffee infusion and push out as much water from inside the FinalPress. Each FinalPress V2 also comes with a carrying sleeve that you can then put it into, so it doesn’t leak all over your kitchen or work-table. Cleaning up after is easy too, as the FinalPress can just be rinsed under running water.

The FinalPress V2 works with tea leaves too, letting you brew, red, black, or even green tea right in your cup.

You can carry your FinalPress V2 with you, wherever you go!

Each FinalPress is engineered to absolute precision, with a CNC-machined all-metal design that has the tightest tolerances and most intricate details. The entire device is made from stainless steel, making it food-grade and temperature-resistant. The mesh on the side of the FinalPress V2 is made using a high-precision laser that cuts holes 200 microns wide, enough to let water pass, but trap any physical particles like coffee grounds. A stainless steel spring built into the plunger also works remarkably to help you extract flavors from your coffee/tea, and an easy-to-clean design makes round two of your favorite beverage incredibly easy!

What really sets the FinalPress V2 apart (enough to have 20,000 enthusiastic backers), is the fact that it gives you the ability to take YOUR coffee on the go. You’re not bound by clunky machines that don’t travel, pod-based coffee systems that create waste, or expensive cafes that don’t brew coffee your way. The FinalPress’ portable design fits well in bags, backpacks, and travel cases, giving you the freedom of carrying your cup of coffee to work, to another city, or even to the great outdoors. It’s small, elegant, and works with a great degree of versatility, letting you hot/cold brew your coffee, or even switch to tea on occasion. Moreover, the lack of plastic in its build makes the FinalPress V2 more environmentally friendly than any other coffee maker with a larger footprint or impact!

The FinalPress V2 is priced at $59, with free global shipping starting July 2023.

Capsule coffee machine concept adds a sense of warmth to your daily brew

For some reason, it seems that the market has decided that coffee makers need to have an imposing industrial motif and are covered mostly in black with a few silver accents. Capsule-based coffee machines, however, are challenging that tradition, with many incorporating more curves and colors. Some still adhere to the common coffee machine aesthetic, perhaps to reinforce the image of being a “regular” member of that family. Fortunately, the mechanics of capsule machines leave some room for experimenting with different designs, such as this concept that, as its name seems to imply, exudes a feeling of warmth and comfort that is perfect for your morning cup of coffee.

Designer: Ibrahim Can Erdinçmer

Everything about the Woolly capsule coffee machine concept is meant to exude a sense of softness and approachability, unlike the sometimes daunting personalities of typical coffee machines. The design language makes use of very few straight lines and employs a more muted color palette that goes avoids blacks and reds. The wooden panel and metallic accents contrast nicely with the textured plastic surface of the body, creating a composition that’s pleasing to the eyes from every angle.

Woolly also has a tactile aspect to it, inviting people to feel its warmth instead of just seeing it. The wooden panel and texture plastic already provide a stimulating touch experience, but the embedded touch-sensitive buttons on the panel take that interaction to the next level. The icons for this interface are backlit, but they fade and disappear into the background when not needed in order to minimize visual distractions.

1

In terms of functionality, the concept also offers a few unique features. It has, for example, a large bin that can hold up to ten empty capsules, letting you delay cleanup for a while. The bowl-shaped spill tray almost looks like a separate part, and it is actually only attached magnetically to the body. It could probably be used on its own as a tray for a cup or mug, allowing you to bring that aesthetic with you wherever you will drink your coffee.

Woolly bucks the trend of coffee machines to offer a comforting experience that goes beyond just serving coffee. While the usability of embedded touch buttons might raise a few concerns, the concept still offers something worthwhile as a whole. Even better, such a design is completely within the realm of possibility, presuming there are coffee machine manufacturers willing to take the plunge in designing something different yet appealing for this market.

LAYER Breeze coffee machine presents a softer way to start your day

Kitchen appliances have gotten more sophisticated and more advanced these days, yet their design language has remained mostly the same. Although they definitely look elegant and refined, most kitchen equipment, from refrigerators to ovens, often have sharp edges, shiny metallic surfaces, and an almost cold demeanor. There are exceptions, of course, but this design DNA seems to be the most prevalent, even for smaller appliances like toasters and coffee machines. That, in turn, dictates the overall aesthetic of the kitchen, at least if the appliances’ style doesn’t clash with the theme you already have going. That doesn’t always have to be the case, and this capsule-based coffee machine challenges those established traditions to bring a device that greets you with a calming and somber ambiance that helps ease you into the day.

Designer: Benjamin Hubert (LAYER Design)

A lot of people depend on coffee to get their day started or even get through the rest of the day. While businesses like Starbucks can be found almost everywhere, many households today would have their own coffee machine, whether using beans or capsules. Despite the popularity of these appliances, few owners probably notice how their designs affect how people see and approach them, which is to say they see coffee machines are veritable machines that are elegant yet clinical rather than something approachable and personal.

Breeze, designed for the South Korean coffee brand Dongsuh, tries to change that attitude by drastically changing the appearance of a capsule coffee machine. This comparatively newer breed of coffee makers often have more stylish and less industrial designs, but they still can’t get rid of that shiny metallic luster common to kitchen appliances and tools. In contrast, Breeze applies a refreshing and softer color palette, favoring pastel variants of white, charcoal, and pink to convey a gentler personality.

The shapes are also distinctly different. While the modular blocks are admittedly more geometric, their rounded corners add to the overall softer aesthetic of the machine. A ridged surface wraps around the base, contrasting with the smoother texture of the head. Another point of contrast is the tall water tank at the back, a transparent container that projects an image of clarity that, when taken together with the more subdued hues of the machine, seems to send a message of calm.

Beyond just the visuals, the design also includes a more tactile interface to operate the machine, using clearly marked LED-backlit buttons at the top of the head. Made from simple shapes and with a simple way of operating, Breeze gives the coffee machine a gentle and almost comforting identity, which is probably the kind of character you’d want to meet when you get your coffee first thing in the morning or in the middle of a tiring day.

Inspired by Jenga, this modular coffee maker stacks everything you need in a sleek appliance

Inspired by the build of Jenga towers, Cenga is a modular, handmade coffee set with a grinder, dripper, and canister included in a single unit.

Since coffee shops closed due to the pandemic, we’ve brought the coffee shops home–grinders, drippers, travel mugs, galore. With so many supplies needed to make a cup of coffee, storing our at-home coffee shops becomes the hard part.

Piled together like a Jenga tower, Cenga is a handmade modular coffee set conceptualized by a team of designers to bring home everything you’d find in a cafe.

Starting from the top of Cenga, a grinder for coffee beans funnels the grounds into a dripper before heating up some water and dripping that into a canister to serve. Inspired by the stacking method of Jenga blocks, the team of designers combined that with a modular build to optimize the product’s storability and portability.

Cenga’s initial inspiration was found in its portability, allowing users to enjoy coffee shops in the comfort of their own kitchens or even on the go. Narrow by design, Cenga can slip into any kitchen cabinet and still have everything you might need for a hot cup of coffee. The color scheme of Cenga also fits into almost any kitchen. The ribbed glass grinder and translucent coffee canister give Cenga a cozy personality and a fresh look.

Since COVID-19 closed down so many cafes, we’ve been itching for that cup of coffee graced by a barista’s touch. With Cenga, we’re one step closer to having all the joy of an actual cafe stored in a single kitchen cabinet. Stacked into a single unit like a Jenga tower, Cenga comes with a grinder, dripper, and coffee canister.

Designers: Joohyung Park, Seonghwa Lim, Eojin Roh, & Jihye Park

Cenga comes as a single unit for ultimate portability and storability.

Broken down into four parts, Cenga is a modular coffee maker inspired by the build of Jenga blocks.
