Covering A Car With Color-Changing Mood Ring Disks

Presumably curious how her car feels at any given moment, Youtuber Ali Spagnola covered it with 9,000 PopSockets, which she painted with thermochromic liquid crystal paint so they change color based on temperature, just like a mood ring. Wait — so mood rings aren’t sensing my mood, just temperature? 9-year old me demands a full refund!

The disks appear black at cooler temperatures but turn to violet, blue, green, yellow, orange, and red the warmer they get. Live in Arizona? Then you’ll always be driving a red car. Live in Alaska? Then a black car.

I imagine my car would constantly be red with anger at the way other motorists are driving. There…aren’t a lot of good drivers around here. You’d think new cars don’t even come with turn signals. Or even old cars, for that matter. They all definitely have horns, though!

Adobe’s Magical Color-Changing Dress Helps You Get a Wardrobe Makeover in Seconds!

Forget the Blue/Black White/Gold dress… Adobe’s new dress can be anything you want it to be!

While Adobe’s been known primarily for its cutting-edge creatively aligned software suites, the company surprised attendees at the 2023 Adobe MAX conference with a taste of something it was working on in secret. A presenter walked on stage in a seemingly normal dress, only to shock viewers as the dress suddenly went from matte white to reflective. Individual elements in the dress then changed colors, creating unique patterns that allowed its wearer to effectively alter their attire in real-time. Dubbed Project Primrose, this interactive dress uses ‘Reflective Light-Diffuser Modules’ to create Non-Emissive Flexible Display Systems.

Designer: Adobe

Although currently just unveiled as a product showcase, it isn’t entirely clear if Primrose plans on being available to developers or even consumers anytime soon. The project is more of a proof of concept, displaying a new way to preview and prototype designs and patterns in real time. “Project Primrose, displayed at MAX as an interactive dress, makes this possible with wearable and flexible, non-emissive textiles which allow an entire surface to display content created with Adobe Firefly, Adobe After Effects, Adobe Stock, and Adobe Illustrator,” says the Adobe Communications Team. By incorporating this technology into various surfaces like clothing, furniture, and more, designers can explore endless possibilities in terms of style. For instance, individuals can easily download and ‘wear’ the latest designs from their favorite designers.

The system developed by Adobe utilizes reflective-backed polymer-dispersed liquid crystal (PDLC), an electroactive substance that is often employed in smart window technology. This energy-efficient and non-emissive material can be easily customized into various shapes and has the ability to dynamically scatter light, going beyond what e-ink and other technologies have to offer.

Speaking of electronic ink, this isn’t the first time we’ve seen dynamic color-changing designs before. At CES 2022, BMW displayed the iX Flow Concept that could change colors in real time. The technology dates back as early as 2017, when Sony displayed the e-ink-powered FES watch that could similarly change its design. What Adobe’s done is different in two notable ways – for starters, it ditches electronic ink or conventional displays for something reflective and more eye-catching. Secondly, it ties this technology in with its own creative software, showcasing how the industry will empower designers in the future to create on new surfaces… quite literally!

BMW iX Flow Concept is a chameleon of the automotive world destined for a sci-fi movie debut

In 2021 BMW announced that they’d been working on a color-changing car, and now at CES 2022 the crazy idea is finally a reality, in the form of a chameleon-like electric vehicle. This is one of the most eye-catchy things seen at the Omicron inflicted show in Las Vegas this year. BMW calls it the iX Flow Concept and although it seems like any other iX crossover prototype, what it has got is something straight out of a Transformers movie plot. A futuristic car that can blend right into its surroundings to go invisible magically!

Well, that is a far-fetched dream for now, as the EV for now uses E Ink technology (much like the Amazon Kindle series’ display) to put forth a hypnotic show of color-changing skin. The implementation is in its infancy stage right now, as the iX Flow Concept can switch between the hues of white, dark gray and black only. According to BMW the E Ink is sandwiched in a wrap that conforms to the “contours of the all-electric Sports Activity Vehicle.” Millions of microcapsules (the diameter of a human hair) are etched in this wrap containing the negatively charged white pigment and positively charged black pigment. Based on the amount of pigment needed to collect on the surface, the electric field is applied to do the trick – something known as electrophoresis technology.

Designer: BMW Group

The color-changing pallet is draped all over the body, as one can customize the look of the car depending on the needs and of course moods on a particular day. This is useful in maintaining the cabin temperature too as, on hot days, the color of the vehicle could be lighter to reflect more light and darker on colder days to absorb more heat. This will also result in lesser energy requirements to maintain the optimum inside temperature Munich-based premium car manufacturer says, the future versions of the car could follow the color-changing aesthetics to the grille and wheels too. Thereby, resulting in complete customization of the ride with the touch of a button on a compatible app.

The production version of the iX Flow Concept is far from meeting fruition as the color-changing skin is temperature sensitive and works only in certain conditions. Once that bit is sorted, we are staring at limitless options when it comes to displaying custom graphics, messages, or even color flow actuated by the music being played inside. Of course, we expect BMW to evolve this color-changing EV into one that can display millions of colors like current-gen OLEDs. For now, this concept could very well make it through to sci-fi or in fact Bond movie plot!

Brian Eno’s limited edition turntable gives listeners a psychedelic experience through color-changing LEDs!

The new limited-edition turntable from acclaimed record producer Brian Eno’s collaboration with London’s Paul Stolper Gallery offers an experimental, psychedelic sonic experience through color-changing LEDs.

Brian Eno, a pioneer in the realm of ambient music and the 1970s art-rock scene, speaks the language of music. Following his illustrious career with and departure from English synth-rock band Roxy Music, Eno got to work on his own music: a sonic world of ambient, avant-pop self-produced records. Gaining the admiration and respect of critics and listeners alike, Eno soon solidified his work as the template to serve new wave groups and musicians for years to come.

Today, Eno looks back on his storied artistry in close collaboration with London’s Paul Stolper Gallery to create 50 experimental turntables that embrace psychedelia through color-changing LEDs reminiscent of Eno’s ambient sonic musings. In addition to music, Eno is known for his visual artwork.

Utilizing the intersection of light and music to immerse audiences in meditative and hyperrealistic dazes, Eno has been inspired by the works of James Turrell, and Piet Mondrian, as well as suprematism, and early-20th-century Russian avant-garde art movements.

The new turntable from Brian Eno and the Paul Stolper Gallery embraces a cross-section of Eno’s varied craft and interests. Eno’s turntable emanates different-colored fluorescent LEDs from its base and platter, changing colors as the music plays.

Describing his experience using the turntable for the first time, Eno notes, “The light from it was tangible as if caught in a cloud of vapor. We sat watching for ages, transfixed by this totally new experience of light as a physical presence.”

Designer: Brian Eno & Paul Stolper Gallery

The turntable is wrapped in a translucent white shell that allows the color-changing LEDs to emanate warmly.

Each one of the 50 available turntables comes signed by Brian Eno and is given a batch number.

The Chameleon bottle changes its color with the temperature!

The Chameleon bottle just makes owning a bottle and drinking the liquid stored in the bottle fun, which is a difficult thing to begin with. It’s challenging to gamify something as basic as hydration, but the Chameleon bottle does it with a simple trick. Thermally-reactive paint! The bottle comes in one of three colors, and is white when warm, and colorful when cold. Fill your bottle with warm coffee, tea, or a cold beverage like a juice or just good old chilled water (infuse it for even more of a twist). As you fill your liquid into the bottle, you literally see the color changing before your eyes, not only giving your bottle an interesting altering-avatar that’s fun to observe, but also allowing the opaque bottle to actually show you the levels of the liquid inside too! As you continuously take sips from your bottle (and believe me, you’re going to!) the level of the liquid drops, changing the color of the bottle along with it, creating a constantly morphing gradient as you fill, empty, and refill your bottle, just because staying hydrated is such an entertaining activity!

The Chameleon bottle is an especially fun bottle for children, who will definitely be bewildered and bewitched by this thermochromic magic. It comes with a leash, making it easy to carry, and even a silicone sleeve that keeps your hand from burning if you store something hot in the bottle. The sleeve even comes with a running slot on the side that lets you see the bottle’s rising and falling color level. The 600ml steel bottle can be infinitely reused, is leakproof, dishwasher safe, and is a sure-fire way to keep you (and even kids) hydrated just because you’re eager to see (and show off) the Chameleon’s changing colors!
