The comic industry would rather grind to a halt than go digital

Wednesday is usually New Comic Book Day but, with everyone on lockdown due to coronavirus, this week’s selection was a little light. The main distributor, Diamond, ceased shipments both to and from its warehouse — a seemingly logical move given that...

‘Star Trek: Picard’ will have its own prequel comic and novel

Streaming shows have had literary tie-ins before, but not quite like this. CBS All Access' upcoming Star Trek: Picard will have two works that serve as lead-ins to the series -- you'll want to read them if you intend to be fully informed before the...

Classic Comic Book Covers Recreated with Balloons

Comic book covers are an amazing artform. They can be done in so many styles. Sometimes they are paintings, other times they are finely-detailed color pen and ink panels, but one thing I have never seen on a comic cover are balloon sculptures. Until now.

These comic cover recreations by balloon artist Phileas Flash are so awesome. Each of the sculptures fit in a 10 foot by 10-foot space and take Phileas many days to make. First he finishes the main sculpture, then uses Photoshop to add in the lettering, which are made from un-inflated balloons with wire inside.

These are great. I hope that DC or Marvel honors this guy by recruiting him for some actual covers in the future. Amazing work, Phileas.

Dark Horse Comic Predator 8″ Figure Celebrates 25 Years

Predator fans who like comic books may remember when the very first issue of the Dark Horse comics based on the galactic hunter hit stores. It has been 25 years now since that first issue was published. To celebrate that anniversary a sweet new action figure has been unveiled.

The 8-inch action figure is designed and colored to look like the blue armor-wearing Predator from that first issue. The action figure is aimed at collectors and packed in a window box with original comic book art.

The action figure also ships with a mini-comic reprint of Predator #1. You know you will want to play with this thing. I suggest you order two so one can stay in the box. You can get them at ThinkGeek for $29.99(USD).

Doctor Who 9th Doctor Comic Issue #1 Satisfies Two Kinds of Geeks

Some items satisfy more than one type of geek, making them even more popular than they would have been aiming at a single fan base. This Doctor Who comic book is one of those multi-geek targeting products. It will appeal to Whovians because it is based on the 9th doctor, and it will appeal to comic book geeks because it is a first issue comic.

The comic book starts a new adventure based on the 9th Doctor. The cover shows a Titan vinyl figure version of said doctor, which is an exclusive variant just for ThinkGeek.

D’you wanna come with me? ‘Cause if you do then I should warn you; you’ll see all sorts of things. Ghosts from the past. Aliens from the future. The day the Earth died in a ball of flame. It won’t be safe, it won’t be quiet, and it won’t be calm. But I’ll tell you what it will be; the trip of a lifetime!

Those words were spoken by The Ninth Doctor, and now he’s back with a brand-new miniseries: Weapons of Past Destruction! Leaving World War II behind, The Ninth Doctor, Rose, and Captain Jack discover that Time Lord technology (lost in the wake of the Time War) is being sold on the intergalactic black market! Now the threat of a NEW temporal war brews on the horizon. Can the Doctor stop history repeating itself?

The comic was written by the co-author of the “Who-ology” book Cavan Scott. It’s standard comic book size and you can get it for $7.99(USD).

Vinyl Vixens DC Action Figures Celebrate Female Baddies

Many of the female bad guys in the comic book world aren’t purely bad. These characters always seem to me to be right on the verge between full bad and somewhat good. A new series of Vinyl Vixens statues have turned up to celebrate three of these morally ambiguous characters from the DC universe.

The statues include Poison Ivy, Catwoman, and Harley Quinn. All three are officially-licensed DC collectibles and are made in pin-up style by Funko. Each of the statues is attached to a star base and are about nine inches tall.

You can pick up any one of the three at ThinkGeek for $29.99(USD) each. All are in stock right now and all of them have battled Batman at one point in their evil careers.
