Buds You Can Actually Keep Spotless

hoo_01

What’s the difference between a toilet seat and your ear buds? For starters, your toilet seat is probably cleaner! For unknown reasons, headphones and ear buds are one of those unique exceptions to cleanliness that we’re all guilty of ignoring. No matter how expensive or fancy a pair you’ve got, there’s no avoiding the dirt, debris, and ear gunk that builds up inside.

The HOO headphones present an all-new way of keeping things tidy. The design features a grooved/hallow body that can be blown out by the user. The modular form also makes it easy to deep clean sections. Better yet, a recharging container with a closing lid keeps them isolated and sanitary when you’re not using them.

Every urban dweller understands just how precious silence is! Sometimes, it seems like there’s no escaping the cacophony of everyday life. Now, with Owl, there is! This wireless set of earbuds differs from ordinary music muds by blocking out the sounds you don’t want to hear and enhancing the ones you do.

The design takes inspiration from the owl’s natural ability to hone in on and block certain frequencies. Similarly, the buds go beyond basic noise cancelling to eliminate the fuzz of car sounds, horns, crowds and any other undesirable noises. Better yet, you can customize the frequencies which you want to hear (and the ones you don’t) to suit your environment and your own personal taste. Simply use them in tandem with the Owl smartphone app to start hearing your world in an entirely new way!

Everyone Wants The Dash

Untitled

The wearables market is full of watches and glasses that either do one thing perfectly, or a plethora of things imperfectly.  Dash smart headphones change that.

Untitled

The Dash Wireless Smart Headphones Kickstarter project went live February 9th and has already decimated its funding goal of $260,000 and stretch goal of $666,667.  At the time of this writing, Dash has raised over $1,737,480 only 8 days into its 50 funding period, which puts it well on its way to being one of the most successful Kickstarter projects ever.

What’s so popular about The Dash?  Well, it basically promises everything.  The Dash is a pair of wireless Bluetooth earbuds that contain motion tracking technology and a heart rate monitor for fitness tracking, noise cancellation and transparency mode so you can hear when you want and not when you don’t.

Right off the bat, the The Dash has one of the key features of a successful wearable.  It doesn’t get in the way when you wear it.

Although the wireless earbuds do sit in your ears, they can easily be switched into a “transparent” mode similar to what Bose and some other systems have done with their earbuds.  The Kickstarter FAQ says the device will not function as a hearing aid, but I imagine that feature (along with several others) can be expected from future iterations of a product such as this.

Much of the audio pickup is done through the vibrations picked up through bone conduction technology in lieu of traditional microphones, which means wind and ambient noise will be a nearly non-factor when using the headset to make calls.  The audio quality also benefits dramatically from the natural reverberations made possible by a snug fit using their 94% ergonomic model (meaning 6% may not have a perfect in-ear fit).

The Dash packs so much into such a small space that the biggest area of concern is battery life.  The Kickstarter page promises a 3 hour battery life when running all functions.  This may be long enough for a single workout, but it renders The Dash ineffective for use as a 24/7 fitness tracker as you can get from something like a Fitbit Flex or Jawbone Up.

Provided all developments go well (with the way their funding came through, I sure hope there’s no issues), early backers will begin getting their Dashes at the end of 2014, with the product opening to other customers Q1 2015.

Apple EarPods hands-on

Apple EarPods handson

By now, you're probably familiar with Apple's latest earbuds. But are they an improvement over their arguably disposable predecessor, you ask? You bet. Still, they're not going to win out over high-end or even mid-range audio options. That's to be expected, though -- the EarPods do sound better, and, well, they cost 29 bucks and ship with all of the devices Apple announced today. The attractive white 'buds are packaged in a plastic case that's quite similar to the enclosure that Apple introduced with its previous-gen step-up set. They're very lightweight, not that you had any doubts, and appear to be durable enough. The "one size fits all" design worked well in our ears -- it wasn't a snug fit by any means, but we didn't fear that they'd fall to the ground with the slightest movement.

You'll net the best performance in quieter settings, considering that they don't isolate sound like some other options on the market, and if you're a frequent air traveler or often find yourself working in noisy environments, you'll probably want to consider other options. That said, folks who don't need the absolute best or want to save up for a better solution should find these to be sufficient -- we didn't have a chance to do any in-depth testing and analysis, but expect that to come after we've had a chance to digest all of today's new gadgets. For now, you can take a closer look in the hands-on gallery just below.

Sennheiser intros ritzy IE 800 headphones and HDVD 800 amp, your wallet screams

Image
You thought Sennheiser had already done enough to appease audiophiles this year at CES? Think again. The company has announced yet another new set of headphones with an amp to keep it warm at night, but the high-end wares come at a high-end price. The ceramic IE 800 buds (€599 or $787) offer a broad 5 - 46,000 Hz audio range in spite of their mere 7mm drivers, while stainless steel vents on the back supposedly "improve bass and airflow." If you need some extra juice and don't mind forking over the premium €1,499 ($1,973), the HDVD 800 headphone amp's shell is rocking anodized aluminum and a glass window for peering at the bantam circuitry within -- way over the top, but also, pretty amazing. It supports 24-bit 192kHz sources and is engineered for ideal synergy with Senn's HD 800, HD 700, HD 650 and HD 600. Both should hit the shelves by summer of this year.
