I didn’t know how desperately I needed a Knock Box for my Espresso Machine

Diving into the world of coffee is a slippery slope because it’s a never-ending void of products and processes that can improve your brew. The last time I checked, people were recommending using a frozen metal ball in the espresso pouring process to help preserve more delicate flavor profiles. The point is, coffee aficionados will stop at nothing to make sure they’re brewing the best coffee possible… and for the most part, the products they use are absolutely unnecessary (I’m looking at you, coffee needle distributors), but the second I lay my eyes on the Olympus Knock Box, I knew there was something different about it. Designed as a practical addition to your coffee brewing setup, the Olympus Knock Box is a two-part accessory that serves as a tamping station as well as a bin for your coffee after it’s been brewed. Made from molded cork, powder-coated steel, and silicone, the Olympus helps you brew your coffee efficiently (and cleanly too). The tamping station lets you quickly tamp your portafilter, while the knock box itself lets you whack out that puck of coffee after it’s been brewed and extracted. Unlike extracting your espresso over a frozen metal orb, the Olympus Knock Box is just one of those devices that makes the brewing process more convenient, cleaner, and just more effective, whether you’re a home-brewer or a barista at an artisanal cafe.

Knock Boxes have been around for a while, but haven’t really gained much prominence and I think it’s time we change that. Having a knock box with your coffee machine is just about as sensible as wearing an apron while cooking. Just like you wouldn’t want to get your clothes dirty while making food, you wouldn’t want to have your counter or floor a mess while you’re tamping your coffee or knocking the espresso puck out into a bin after extraction. The Olympus provides a nifty station for you to do both activities, keeping your kitchen clean while looking like an elegant little container worthy of adorning your countertop.

Olympus’ knock box design does away with the traditional knock bar, instead utilizing a central rubber silicone pad. This way you can empty out your portafilter with just one clean mess-free hit – perfect for the home coffee bar (that might be doubling as a counter).

The Olympus has a gorgeously simple-looking design that relies on a winning combination of minimalism and a brown/black color palette. The Olympus’ base is made from a molded cork composite that uses micro-granules of cork bound with a natural binding agent that’s nature-friendly, toxin-free, and has zero plastics. It has the appeal of engineered wood, which goes rather well with the black components that sit on top. Nested into this cork base is the powder-coated steel bin that holds as many as 6 espresso pucks in its receptacle.

Once filled, you can merely empty the bin into your trash or add it to your compost pile or kitchen garden. Finally, upon the steel tray sits the Olympus’ tamping station, made out of stiff-yet-flexible silicone. The station has a unique design that accepts portafilters of various sizes, ranging from 51mm to as big as 58mm. The filter snugly fits in, getting secured by a set of silicone fins that prevent it from slipping as you firmly tamp your coffee grounds. Once you’re done, the rim of the tamping station is the perfect point to knock your filter, causing the puck of coffee to fall out in the bin. The silicone is stiff enough to provide a reliable knock without any loud clacking sound.

Designed for homes and tiny hideout cafes, the Olympus has a compact form factor that occupies a mere 6.75″x5.6″ rectangle on your countertop (with a 4″ vertical). Although our hearts are overwhelmingly set on the brown and black variant, there’s another one with a brown base and a white tray and tamping station (although you’ll probably notice dirt faster on it). For coffee enthusiasts looking to own a perfect knock box, the Olympus starts at a 20% discounted price of $99 and ships globally starting Jan-Feb 2024.

Polaroid-inspired coffee machine concept gives you a ‘shot’ of instant coffee with a simple ‘click’!

Who knew Polaroid and espresso were unlikely companions? This concept rather cleverly combines the two into the ‘ultimate coffee machine for amateurs’. If Polaroid brought great retro photography (and photo development) to the masses, the Polaroid Express does the same for instant coffee. Plus, can we just take a second to appreciate how clever the name Polaroid Express is?! (as a play on Polar Express and Espresso)

The coffee machine looks like a massive camera, with the signature friendly rectangular form and the clever use of colors to create that friendly appeal associated with the instant camera company. Designed to be portable (it IS a concept, after all), the apparatus has a rather simple form factor and feels intuitive to operate. All you really have to do is select how many cups you want (the machine can make as many as 4), and hit the ‘shutter’ button and the Polaroid Express gets to work, filling coffee from a set of pre-fed pods into cups at the base of the machine. Lift the top off to reveal the base tray and voila! You’ve got your cups of coffee, freshly made and ready to consume… in an instant!

Designer: Elif Bulut

The Polaroid Express accepts a 2×2 tray of coffee pods, making a total of 4 cups of coffee.

The Polaroid Express’ simple design models itself on the cameras, which only require you to compose your shot and hit the shutter button. Here, all you do is select the number of cups you want to be made and hit the red button and the machine does all the work. It works similarly to how a Keurig or Nespresso machine might. Pods fit into the area right beneath the control panel, and the upper reservoir is filled with water. Once you hit the button, it heats the water up (the rainbow strip on the front acts as a temperature indicator), and as soon as it reaches the right temperature, the machine brews the coffee and dispenses it in the cups right below.

Designed to be perfect for amateurs, the Polaroid Express isn’t just simple to use, it’s fun in its own way too. The rainbow color scheme brings a certain joy to the coffee-making experience (it’s something teens and tweens will appreciate for sure), and the machine’s base comes with a variety of colored trays, allowing you to add a pop of color to your kitchen counter. The trays are paired with matching colorful-base glasses too!

Rapha Cycling Club and Rocket Espresso designed this espresso machine especially for cyclists!

Born from a collaboration between the Rapha Cycling Club and Italian coffee company Rocket Espresso, the R58 is an espresso machine designed for cyclists.

The Rapha Cycling Club (RCC) is known around the world as a community of active cyclists connected through digital clubhouses, an RCC app, and of course, each member’s passion for riding. Through the years, RCC has produced some of the most trusted and sought-after products, experiences, and rides available. In collaboration with acclaimed Italian coffee company Rocket Espresso, RCC’s latest effort is a line of 100 limited editions of R Cinquantotto espresso machines handmade in Milan exclusively for RCC members.

For as long as cyclists have looked forward to long rides on cool Sunday mornings, they’ve looked forward to the cup of coffee that follows. Coffee is serious business and Rapha and Rocket Espresso definitely stepped up to the plate with R58. From its base to its lid, the R58 is outfitted with all the technical specs to ensure the perfect cup of coffee, whether you’re starting or wrapping up your ride.

Providing optimal conditions for temperature-controlled extraction, Rapha and Rocket Espresso outfitted their espresso machine with two independently operated, PID-controlled boilers. Then, a high-grade rotary pump draws water to boil from the machine’s water reservoir or direct mains supply. Featuring a sensor-operated touchscreen display, the myriad of R58’s functions can be controlled with the flick of your finger.

Built by hand by a team in Milan, consumers can rest assured that this line of limited edition espresso machines is constructed with quality materials and focused attention. Since Rapha’s members come from every corner of the globe, the designers even promise that your espresso machine will be technically outfitted to fit the electrical parameters of your country.

Designer: Rapha Cycling Club x Rocket Espresso

Heavy-duty stainless steel elements give R58 an elevated, polished look.

The touchscreen display allows users to control R58 with the flick of their fingers.

For a modern-meets-classic look, R58 is outfitted with analog elements as well.

Circular Design 101: A coffee cup made from recycled coffee husks!

The Huskeecup is the coffee equivalent of drinking a coconut cocktail out of a coconut… No, seriously! Each Huskeecup is, in fact, made from recycled coffee husks combined with a binding agent and molded into a reusable cup that’s impact-resistant, non-toxic, dishwasher-friendly, and uniquely pleasing to look at or even smell!

An estimate of 600 billion disposable coffee cups are produced worldwide each year, 99.75% of which are dumped in a landfill or the oceans without being recycled. What the Huskeecup does is solve that problem, while also looking at the humble coffee bean as a raw material. The fine folk at Huskee gather coffee husks discarded in the roasting process, and pulverize them before binding them together with a biopolymer and finally forming them into cups. Designed to be reused, the cups can either be purchased by coffee aficionados to use at home, or by cafés to serve coffee to their patrons. The Huskeecups come in a variety of styles and sizes, including an adorable set of 6oz espresso cups with saucers to match, or 8oz and 12oz travel mugs that come with sipper-lids made from the same coffee-husk material.

Apart from being eco-friendly, sustainable, and reusable, the Huskeecups are really designed to pair well with the coffee-drinking ritual. The cups come with a textured outer surface that’s comfortable to hold, while the material itself keeps your coffee hotter for longer. The cups are also far more durable than ones made from ceramic or glass, and are BPA-free and non-toxic, unlike plastic tumblers or plastic-lined paper glasses. Moreover, old cups that are broken or discarded can be repurposed into new ones, creating a closed-loop that ensures each cup has the potential to be recycled without generating waste, so you can drink your coffee guilt-free!

This coffee machine was designed to let you make espressos with one hand

To all the coffee lovers like myself, staying quarantined has made us realize that there is an unparalleled joy that we experience when a barista makes you a drink vs when you make one for yourself. If you truly want to make coffee that matches the level of cafes, you need an espresso machine – now I know what you’re thinking, they are complicated and there are way too many accessories, it is high maintenance, etc. But what if there was an appliance that combined all the accessories into one espresso machine and made it easy for even beginners to enjoy a foamy cappuccino? Say hello to Rebuild: ratio!

Since professional coffee machines have a different product for each part of the process, Rebuild:ratio was designed as an espresso machine that would streamline the process of making coffee and while not taking away from the authentic process. This espresso machine gives you a high-quality product with easy user experience. Feel like barista yourself when you grind the beans and steam your milk but without the hassle of keeping up with three separate appliances. While the machine looks like a complicated, professional one, it has actually been organized in a way for you to feel confident about making cafe-grade beverages with ease. There are three shape concepts: layer, build, and tool that make up this sleek appliance.

The analog-type grinder door is one of its most distinguished features when compared to existing machines. This enables the user to differentiate between the grinding part and the discharge part using a simple opening-closing action and minimizing the porter filter movement. It has been designed such that if you need to remove the knock box by holding the porter filter you can easily remove it using just one hand. The front and side sides of the knock box cover are created to be smoothly removed without friction, unlike most espresso machines, especially the ones made for home use.

To prevent water from getting all around the machine or from any milk-steaming accidents, the drip tray is made of diagonal lines for more efficient draining. This induces the water to enter the tray when it falls instead of making the surrounding area dirty. To keep with the clean lines aesthetic, the handle is not made to be protruding and adds to the seamless visual build. The transparent water container lets you check the amount and refill accurately. The slightly curved lid makes opening and closing effortless. The only parts that protrude from the overall linear design are the bucket, bucket support, and grinder parts to prevents the heat and wires from coming out of the vent hole when the machine is in close contact with the wall. Anyone else wants to open a home cafe after this?

Starbucks redesigns their espresso machines to use gravity for a smoother coffee!

The one thing I have missed the most during quarantine is going to cafes because I have now realized that someone else making coffee for me is a joy I took for granted. Baristas often aren’t respected enough for their craft and maybe it is so because people can’t visually see their process. So Starbucks has redesigned the bulky espresso machine to a slim, sleek tower that uses the bottom-fill method for a smoother espresso and experience!

The Phantom Espresso was born out of a need to make the experience a consumer has with the barista better. You tend to love what you eat or drink more if you have an appreciation for the person making it. The traditionally large espresso machines are obtrusive to the craft and become a barrier between the craftsmen of the beverage and the curious coffee drinkers. By moving the espresso engine below the counter and incorporating bottom fill espresso glasses it enabled the bar to become more open up the bar and let the customers enjoy the brewing process, especially for the seasonal and limited-edition drinks! From the customer POV, it has a tower that supports a cantilevered horizontal bar that holds the espresso glasses. The fluted-vase tower is the bean funnel which leads to the brewing of the coffee. The ends of the bar can be twisted 180 degrees to pour the espresso into the cup and then to be auto-rinsed. The milk steaming happens under the counter but the control dials for foam and temperature are on the top. In front of the tower, the team has placed bean hoppers and sensory bowls invite customers to get closer to the beans, putting quality ingredients before them to see and smell.

The bottom-fill process is unconventional in cafes, especially global chains like Starbucks. But it was chosen for the redesign because it produces a clean, sweet flavor due to gravity keeping bitter particulates suspended in line. The tactile treatments like the knurled bar handles create intuitive touchpoints for the barista and the appearance of the espresso is like magic for the customer. Phantom is easy to clean and the partner-facing angled grille hides the mess from the customer’s view while excess liquids are channeled directly into a sink basin below for drainage. When you see the crema fill up the cup the next time you go into a cafe, be sure to thank your local hero who keeps you caffeinated in these complex times!

This Bugatti-inspired espresso machine is here to supercharge your day with caffeine!

Yamaha makes bikes, but they also make pianos. Bose makes speakers and suspension for truck seats. Ferrari makes cars, but they also have a flourishing fragrance line, so when I see a coffee maker with a Bugatti logo on it, you best believe that I’m more delighted than bewildered!

Don’t worry though, the French automotive company isn’t pivoting to caffeinated beverages, but designer Fábio Martins tried imagining what a conceptual espresso machine from Bugatti would look like. By embracing the company’s automotive DNA and bringing it to kitchen appliances, Martins successfully makes a coffee-machine that looks as rich, luxuriant, and adrenaline-pumping as a Chiron does. The Bugatti Etiron coffee machine comes in the same colors as Bugatti’s cars, with the classic blue and black pairing being its most standout model. If you look at the machine’s front, it perfectly embodies Bugatti’s signature horseshoe grille design by adopting the same shape (and even sporting the grille pattern on its front too!). Move over to the side and the Etiron curves and arches back the same way a Bugatti’s rear does, with even that C-shaped design detail created through a clever surface split! Martins has even detailed what the coffee machine’s ‘chassis’ will look like by imagining the appliance’s inner architecture, and whether it’s on internal components or external body-parts, the Bugatti logo makes its appearance felt.

While I’d imagine that a French-automotive-brand inspired coffee maker would probably come in the format of a French Press (I’d be wrong… French coffees are quite diverse, apparently), the Etiron adopts a more modern, fast, coffee-pod format… which sort of makes sense because of its ability to deliver quality with speed, right??

A coffee grinder that fits your millennial interior aesthetic

My day only really starts once I have had my cup of coffee. To me, it is not a beverage but a life-juice that awakens my mind and my soul! Being a coffee enthusiast, I have a whole mini barista set up in my kitchen – the espresso machine, the steam wand, the tamper – all of it. But what most of us skip is the coffee grinder and it is truly a taste-altering step. This shaded coffee grinder by Husky Design will tempt you into making coffee the right way!

Coffee grinders add a whole new level of “fresh” to your beverage, there is a different quality that bubbles up when you grind whole beans and use it in your machine rather than pre-packaged grounds. Especially when the coffee grinder looks this sleek, how can you not want to get a machine just so that you get to use this grinder? It almost looks so smooth as if it was carved from one piece of glass. The minimal yet eye-catching bright button seamlessly fits into the lid which has a translucent top to give you a peek at your beans.

Unlike the usual black or grey coffee grinders, the gradient shades of this radiate a happy feeling and give the underrated gadget a colorful personality. For me personally, the whizzing sound of the coffee grinder also wakes me up, it is like a sound signal to my brain that we must start functioning which is then rewarded by the smell of fresh grounds. Take that extra step and grind your beans, you will love coffee even more (if that is still a possibility)!
