This Fork Zaps Your Tongue with Electricity to Simulate Salt

If you have ever stuck a 9-volt battery on your tongue, you know that the sensation it creates almost seems salty. That is what this fork is all about. The Electric Flavoring Fork uses the same principle to simulate the taste of salt for those who can’t have salt, but love the taste. It is a truly shocking utensil.

The handle houses a rechargeable battery and electric circuit. When it goes into your mouth with food, you press a button on the handle, and electric current is applied to the tongue. The prototype cost just ¥2,000 (~$17 USD) to make, and is being developed by Hiromi Nakamura at the Rekimoto Lab, Interfaculty Initiative in Information Studies, at the University of Tokyo.

It isn’t for sale just yet. I think I’ll pass. I don’t love salt enough to shock myself repeatedly even if it is mild.

We don’t often imagine disposable cutlery as being the easiest on the eyes, but Uria Graiver’s Knife & Fork will bring style and convenience to your next picnic. Flat-pack-ready, the set comes attached so the user can easily snap off the desired number of utensils. Doctor Who Sonic Screwdriver Cutlery for Hungry Time Lords

The other day, I showed all you Doctor Who geeks out there the coolest vegetable peeler ever. That peeler looked like the Sonic Screwdriver used by the 11th/12th Doctor. If you thought that was awesome, you will love this. ThinkGeek now has an entire cutlery set that has Sonic Screwdriver handles.

The set has the requisite three pieces including a fork, spoon, and knife. Each of the handles looks just like the handle on the peeler, again modeled after the universal fix-it tool wielded by the 11th and 12th Doctors.

The handles are plastic and the eating ends are stainless steel they are dishwasher safe as well. You can get the entire three-piece set for $29.99(USD).

Courtly Cutlery

In creating Jarosinksi & Vaugoin’s design No. 192, Thomas Feichtner drew inspiration from the classic methods involved in producing utensils by hand, a process typically used by the manufactory. The resulting product employs a clever combination of clear surfaces and radiuses with a theme of two diametrically intersecting phases that together lend the cutlery a highly individual character. Robust yet refined, the collection is well-balanced for both casual and formal table setting alike.

Darth Vader Lightsaber BBQ Fork: The Dark Side of the Fork

Earlier this year we showed you some slick lightsaber meat tongs. What you really need when you are grilling up some steak or hotdogs is a nice, long meat fork. ThinkGeek has a sweet new meat fork that looks like Darth Vader’s lightsaber.

The BBQ Fork has a lightsaber hilt as the handle and it is officially licensed Star Wars gear. The fork is made from stainless steel. The only real downside I see is that the fork is hand wash only.

Measurements for the fork are 1.5 inches in diameter and 20 inches long. It can only be shipped in the US and Canada – presumably because it might be mistaken for a weapon. It sells for $25(USD) over at ThinkGeek.

HAPIfork Lets You Know When It’s Time to Stop Stuffing Your Face

On a diet? Need to lose a few pounds within the next few weeks? Then you need the HAPIfork. It’s a ‘smart’ fork that comes equipped with a sensor that keeps track of how fast you’re eating and how many times you’ve used it to stuff food into your mouth.

HAPIFork1

Once it detects that you’re eating way too much or way too fast, it’ll vibrate gently to remind you to stop or at least slow down so you won’t eat more than you should. HAPIfork also takes note of the time you began and finished eating, and how long it takes for you to eat a meal so that you can check out your eating stats later and evaluate it accordingly.

The HAPIfork is currently being demonstrated at CES 2013, where it’s delighting dieters and weight watchers at the show and the world over.

HAPIfork will be launching on Kickstarter this March.

Ramen Spoon+Fork: How a Spork Should Be

I think they had the right idea when they began making sporks and including these hybrid utensils in packs of instant noodles. However, they left a lot to be desired, especially since they didn’t really do a good job when it came to actually scooping up soup or noodles.

That is, until now.

Reinvented SporkSome folks finally saw fit to reinvent the spork and come up with a utensil that is actually useful. The spork you see here looks more likely to be able to perform its functions as both a spoon and as a fork, doesn’t it? While it was specifically designed for eating ramen noodles and soup, it could also come in handy for pasta and other saucy dishes.

The Ramen Spoon+Fork is available from Uncommon Goods for $14 (USD).

Now excuse me while I go fix up a bowl of instant noodles…

HAPIfork is the Fork for Dieters and for the Weight Conscious

HAPIFork

CES 2013 is well underway and it’s only a matter of time before the interwebs is flooded with news about quirky devices and gadgets that were unveiling at the annual tech show. The first we’re going to present here is the HAPIfork, which is the smart fork that’s aiming to make a lot of dieters and weight watchers happy.

The HAPIfork has a sensor that detects how fast the user is eating and how often the fork is being used to shove food down the his or her throat. When the fork detects that the user is eating way too fast or way too much, it’ll vibrate gently to remind him or her to slow down. The fork will then send data about the user’s eating habits to a smartphone or computer so that they can be evaluated. It will also be used to draw up a plan that will hopefully encourage the user to stop eating like a glutton.

HAPIfork will launch on Kickstarter sometime in March 2013.

Modern Woodware

Out of all the fancy metal, plastic & other kitchen utensils I own, my wooden set is still the one I most often look to for a variety of uses. There have been plenty of metal, magnet, wall-mounted designs- so why not design a set for the ones people like me use most? Well now there is! Gigodesign’s Woodware series is the most modern & sleek use of natural wood in a utensil I’ve seen. The fork, spoon & spatula are easily kept handy with embedded magnets that can be attached to the wall mount or any other metal surface.
