Kenko Sports Equipment combine minimalist and sustainable approach to design

Kenko Store Gym Equipment

Having a home gym can be of great convenience. You have no reason now not to work out because you have the proper tools at your reach. Your personal gym doesn’t have to be complete as you only need a few dumbbells, a bench, and a mat to start.

Over at the Maison & Objet fair, we saw a few brands and designers worthy of attention. One name that has stood out is Kenko —a company committed to developing sports equipment for use at home. The idea is to make minimalist versions of the standard fitness equipment using natural materials.

Designers: Andreas Bachmann and Fritz Grospietsch

Kenko Store Gym Equipment

With this goal, Kenko is able to come up with regeneration items that don’t only help you with your health and fitness goals but also fit any home interior. Gym equipment usually looks bland, boring, or industrial, but not with Kenko. The Kenko sports equipment and products mainly boast simple designs and innovative functions. Materials are premium quality, starting with cork and wood, used for geometric shapes that have become the distinguishable trait of Kenko.

Kenko Store Gym Equipment

The Kenko sports equipment can also become conversation starters. They look like sculptural pieces that may also function as home decors. Product designers Andreas Bachmann and Fritz Grospietsch have managed to create a unique line that would make a sustainable alternative to the typical gym equipment available in the market.

Kenko wants the sports equipment to be as beautiful as the home. Therefore, the mission has always been to deliver premium quality standards and use natural materials to take advantage of local production. A few notable products have captured our attention, including the Kettlebell Series, Trigger Cone, Massage Stick, Massage Ball, and the Dumbbell Series. The latter is available in either Walnut or Maple with polished stainless steel for manufactured weight plates.

The Kettlebell Series is also ready in Walnut or Maple. The eye-catcher that is this kettlebell is made from solid wood in a complicated process that results in a more stable and durable handle. Like the Dumbbell Series, the Kettlebell Series is available in different weight options.

The Massage Ball is perfect for those with tension or sore muscles. It is made of stainless steel and comes with a cork cover. The cork is for insulation as the ball can be filled with hot water (up to 80°C ). Use the massage ball and apply on the tense or painful part of your body. The Massage Stick can also be described as the same—same materials, features for insulation, and offers the same relief.

The Trigger Cone is composed of brass and cork, which makes it an ideal solution for any muscular tension. Use it to massage a tense region in a circular motion. This will help stimulate blood circulation and relieve stress whether you are lying down, sitting, or standing.

With this AI-enabled personal trainer, you can redefine your approach to working out at home in complete ‘privacy’

One good thing that the ongoing pandemic has done for the human race is, it has made us more concerned about our health and lifestyle. No wonder then, a large population is exploring some form of home exercising to keep fit.  Gyms have moved to homes and people rely on online trainers and their live sessions for at-home fitness regimes.

RAEDA here presents a new approach in this form of at-home fitness experience with real-time feedback. It aims to support individuals through the regime, providing instructions about correct technique and form, crucial to every athlete. The orb-like RAEDA is designed to mimic the idea of a personal trainer at the fraction of the cost. Frankly, it’s not for everyone to afford a physical trainer in the gym, these guys/gals are super expensive to afford. The next best alternative then are the peers, but if you’re shy, asking for the correct form and techniques from others just goes out of the question. This is a perfect platform for something like the RAEDA to walk into our lives.

This equipment, inspired by the weights and other gym gear, comes paired to a base that has a concave design in between resembling the imprint left on the ground when a heavy object is dropped on it. This symbolic appeal gives RAEDA a weighted feel to it. The artificial intelligence (AI) enabled RAEDA, as a personal trainer, leads an individual through correct posture, technique and form, which are a must for strength training. This experience of a personal trainer guiding you remotely at the comfort of your home will help reduce injuries and allow people to workout more confidently and at their convenience (instead of the time slot of the physical trainer in the gym).

RAEDA basically uses 3D depth mapping tech to provide real-time coaching. The live remote learning/teaching allows people to workout better, while the AI sensors onboard allow the device to track the body for real-time feedback of posture and correct technique to use, so fatigue and injuries can be minimized. This is also the biggest advantage of RAEDA, which separates it from other liver trainers coaching remotely. They may show you the postures and techniques, but cannot guide in real-time if you’re doing something incorrectly that may lead to injury or fatigue.

This AI home personal trainer with its 12MP main camera and one-megapixel depth sensor captures the person’s movement in 3D during workout at home. The device connects with your smart TV providing real-time visual straight from RAEDA’s camera on it. The screen then functions as a mirror in a gym, but showing correct form and technique for the given exercise so you can adjust and avoid incorrect posture. When technology makes life easier at the convenience of our homes, we are concerned about our privacy. RAEDA addresses the concern with a physical turn-off function. Just hide the camera lens of the device in its base and your privacy is intact. To use, roll the ball-like camera over to rest on its flat back and you’re good to exercise appropriately.

The Nike AirBuddy drone gives you an airborne AI-powered trainer that tracks your workout

Nike AirBuddy Drone

Designed as a response to several restrictions imposed during the lockdown, the NIKE AIRBUDDY is a conceptual drone that ‘spots’ you while you exercise. It can be carried around via a shoulder-strap located on the base of the drone, and can be deployed anywhere. Once in the air, the drone connects with your Nike Fitness App and tracks your performance, giving you a comprehensive breakdown of your routine at the end.

Nike AirBuddy Drone

The drone embodies a clean, sophisticated design language, with 4 rotors branching out of a capsule-shaped body. The drone’s body is outfitted with a single camera that acts as a watchful eye, observing every movement you make like a trainer would. This would hint at the fact that the drone doesn’t come with any obstacle avoidance, so it’s best used in open fields (as opposed to densely forested parks or the woods). The AirBuddy does come with a light-strip located right in front of its camera, which means for the most part it can see what’s in front of it, avoiding obstacles as it flies forwards. Just in case the drone suffers wear and tear, the AirBuddy’s modular design solves this problem as the propellers are detachable and can be easily replaced with newer parts if they ever do get damaged.

Nike AirBuddy Drone

The AirBuddy is a conceptual drone designed by South Korea-based designer Cheolhee Lee. It features a customizable design that allows users to choose their own color-ways to match their workout-garments and gear, and although conceptual, sounds like quite a flex from a company that has always been at the forefront of innovation, having also worked on laceless shoes in the past, which were recently upgraded with the world’s first-ever hands-free shoes!

Bose Sport Open Earbuds review: Great for workouts, but not much else

Home gyms that complement your IKEA furniture and ensure you fulfil your fitness goals!

The pandemic has restrained most of us to our homes, and not that we needed any more excuses to bunk the gym, but now we have a legitimate one – there’s literally a virus on the loose! But ignoring our health and fitness is something we simply cannot afford to do anymore. If there’s one thing that COVID-19 has instilled into us, it’s that health really is wealth. And, as much as I love procrastinating, and putting off any form of exercise for as long as I can, I cannot deny the fact that health must be considered a top priority for us all. And, so what if we cannot go to the gym, we can bring the gym to us! This collection of home gyms will not only motivate you and excite you to workout, but will also ensure you stick to your daily exercise routine. No more skipping leg days!

Oliver Perretta’s Kondition was inspired by a piece of furniture that actually resembles a standard workout bench, IKEA’s BEKANT series. Both IKEA’s BEKANT and Perretta’s Kondition have similar personalities as they appear as modest, simple furniture designs whose true essence shines through in their ability to blend into any given room. At first, an unassuming side bench or low-rise table during living room hours, and then, an adjustable home workout with a sliding bench come gym time. Perretta was certain to make bullnose corners for Kondition’s workout station in order to enhance both the piece’s adaptive nature and its approachability in its inherent baby-proof design. Additionally, Perretta plans to utilize aluminum extrusion in any eventual construction process as that would ensure a high strength to weight ratio for more intense workouts. Stamped panels also make for easy and deep cleaning so that job won’t ever feel stressful after a good sweat.

Instead of answering the unanswerable (really, who can say what’s up next for 2020), the team behind G-Wall designed their home gym specifically so that it could be stored behind a closet or armoire cabinet’s door. That way the time that you would have spent making room for your home fitness system, instead is spent actually putting it to use. G-Wall’s Home Fitness System has several standout features: variable modules, user-adjustability, and compatibility, to name a few. Each user decides on which modules they want to comprise the larger system. This means that despite the amount of space in your home, G-Wall’s design makes it possible to incorporate a home gym anywhere. The different modules that users can decide on range from cardiovascular equipment, to free weights and even heavy training. The gear that comes with each module is stored in cabinets or racks that easily hang behind doors or however the user deems appropriate for their personal space.

SlimBeam is an elegant, multifunctional home cable machine that offers a wide array of workout options for users and its sleek, wooden body fits into any interior living space. The cable machine comes with an incorporated pull-up bar, weights, accessory adapter, and plenty of different cord options for different weight exercises like tricep extensions or pushdowns. The designers at NOHrD made all of these exercise options available to users because cable machines are intended to target those deeper layer muscles that isolated weight training misses. SlimBeam’s body might be slim and minimal, but no functionality was sacrificed in the making of this cable machine. Standing at just over seven feet tall and 16 inches wide, SlimBeam offers cord extension of up to eight meters, giving users the chance to practice that golf swing or rowing stroke.

Recognizing that most people don’t have the space for gym equipment in their home, or the money for a gym membership, or even the willpower to head to the gym every day, Josh Hume embarked on a journey to bring the gym to the household. The catch? It had to be the smallest, most exhaustive (and exhausting!) gym ever made. After multiple iterations, the FITT Cube was born. With its 450mm edge dimension, the FITT Cube occupies as much space as a footstool, and comes with a mini-stepper (with its own seven-segment LCD display), a rotating seat, gripping handles, a plyometric platform, and even resistance bands. The FITT cube also comes with a user guide, exercise chart, and nutrition guide to keep you on top of your fitness game.

This 3-in-1 fitness wall by NOHrD christened Wall Compact is an exception, and surprisingly it takes up as little space as imagined – no more than your small couch. The home fitness solution is designed by WaterRower’s (expertise in developing rowing machines for over three decades) sister brand NOHrD that focuses on form and function. Their design ideology is centered on the user and the aesthetic appeal of the fitness equipment while still maintaining the highest standards of strength training backed by science. You can tone all the important muscles in your body with this multifaceted fitness machine that comes with its own virtual coach interactive workout program accessed via the touchscreen. You can perform chest, forearm, biceps, triceps, shoulder, and back exercises on the cable stations on each side –while the SwingBells on the wall gives you more freedom of taking up your free weight training sessions.

The Tempo Studio is a gym-set that comes complete with a display and a motion-tracking camera that actively scans and monitors your exercise in 3D. With built-in exercise routines that are guided by expert trainers performing live exercise sessions, the Tempo is the equivalent of going on a Zoom video call with your gym trainer. Hop onto a personalized live session with a gym trainer of your choice and the trainer on the other side of the screen guides you through your workout. The Tempo Studio comes built-in with a workout mat as well as all the training gear you’d need, and Tempo’s AI-enabled camera module captures and tracks your body’s movement as you work out, allowing the trainer to remotely know where you’re going wrong.

No larger than two shoe-boxes kept end-to-end, the Gym Box by James Wall looks deceptively small for a home gym, however, it transforms into an extensive resistance and box-training kit once opened. Complete with an adjustable bench, a step-up box, a resistance platform, and multiple resistance-bands, the Gym Box can be used in a variety of ways, spanning more than 165 exercises to give you full-body workouts for losing weight, toning up, or building muscle mass. Designed to be two things – Compact and Versatile, the Gym Box allows you to fit all your gym-equipment into something that’s small enough to slide under your bed or into the bottom shelf of your wardrobe. It weighs 28 lbs, and measures not more than 45-inches in length, making it perhaps one of the smallest all-in-one home-gyms. Once it opens up, its parts can be configured into any variety of arrangements, or even used independently. The adjustable bench can be set to a 90° angle, or reclined to a full 180°, with 1¼-inch thick steel tubing to ensure it’s just as robust as the equipment you find in gyms.

Designed to adapt to your flexible lifestyle, the NOVA by Paul Francis lets you transform your health and body no matter where you are without needing to go to a gym. The single exercise device is a heavy-duty portable gym that uses high resistance to provide total body strength training at home, office, or on the go. “The NOVA Gym provides up to 40lbs (18kg) of resistance in each hand in all planes of movement, yet only weighs 2.5lbs (1.12Kg) and folds up to go anywhere,” says Paul Francis who created the design and is also an architect, industrial designer, and inventor. The team uses their patented SpiraFlex technology that provides weightless resistance and was actually the first resistive exercise device used in space (NASA iRED) – Francis is truly an inventor because his technology is ‘out of this world’! SpiraFlex feels smooth and linear like free-weights, without the weight or momentum. The stainless steel cables have been coated with nylon to remain durable for long-term use with high resistance.

The Groove was conceptualized around the efficiency of pilates reformers, resistance training, and gymnastics, integrating an entire gym into one piece of furniture. Hannah Fink reimagined working out at home by merging practicality with style. The Groove mounts three cushioned units onto quiet, rubber wheels and connects them with resistance bands, allowing for a catalog of possible exercises: heel raises, bicep curls, leg presses, sliding planks. Pulling on inspiration from pilates and gymnastics, The Groove incorporates the four pillars of fitness: aerobic, strengthening, stretching, and balance. Since most pieces of home gym equipment focus on only one pillar, users might unknowingly neglect other muscle groups, which can lead to an imbalance that contributes to overuse injuries.

walkingpad_1

The WalkingPad opens up into a full-size treadmill, sans the side rails. Two wheels at the front end allow you to easily roll the folded WalkingPad to and from under your sofa or bed, and setting up the treadmill is as easy as unfolding it open with a single lifting action. Once unfolded, the belt immediately tightens around the treadmill, and on switching it on, a display at the front of the product comes to life. The WalkingPad can be used in two modes. A manual mode allows you to set a pre-determined speed that your feet follow, while an automatic mode allows you to walk fast or slow, while the traction belt below your feet adjusts its speed to your gait. You’ve even got the additional handheld remote that you can use to work the WalkingPad, while a mobile app allows you to keep track of your walk and subsequently your workout… and when you’re done, just fold the WalkingPad and slide it conveniently under your couch! Having a proper, functional home-gym was never this convenient.

Get a full-body workout without using weights with this NASA-backed portable gym

Its been about three months since everyone has been working from home due to quarantine. While places are starting to slowly open up, some like movie theatres, concert halls and gyms still remain high-risk places. You can watch all the movies on Netflix, the closest you can get to a concert is having an amazing speaker that blasts tunes with your five friends while remaining socially distant, and as for having a full-body workout, you can get the OYO NOVA that brings the gym to your hands – literally!

Designed to adapt to your flexible lifestyle, the NOVA lets you transform your health and body no matter where you are without needing to go to a gym. The single exercise device is a heavy-duty portable gym that uses high resistance to provide total body strength training at home, office, or on the go. “The NOVA Gym provides up to 40lbs (18kg) of resistance in each hand in all planes of movement, yet only weighs 2.5lbs (1.12Kg) and folds up to go anywhere,” says Paul Francis who created the design and also an architect, industrial designer, and inventor.

The handles have been redesigned from their first model and have been upgraded to a T-shape with steel inserts for a better grip.

“The NOVA Gym is the only fitness device that provides abduction and adduction during a single exercise movement, building a balanced workout in less time. Also, as it does not require the vertical of gravity, you can perform exercises in all planes of movement, without extra equipment like a bench,” explains Nick Bolton, OYO Fitness Director. You can do all your traditional gym exercises like back and chest fly, biceps and triceps, shoulder raise and press, lateral pulldown, rowing, ab crunches, back extensions, and more with their guided workout videos.

Portable gyms are the future of our flexible lifestyle as they deliver the same results without taking up space as the traditional workout equipment and saving a lot of costs! It makes fitness and gym training more accessible to everyone. The weightless resistance reduces the risk of joint issues and also provides more movement than resistance bands. NOVA is expandable and can change with your fitness levels. It enables you to do over 100 exercises all from the comfort of your space so that you don’t have to choose between safety and fitness during these complex times. If it is good enough for NASA astronauts, then it is more than good enough for us!

Workout with these product designs to come out of this quarantine healthier than ever!

I truly believe there are 2 types of people in this world – the first one who workout diligently and let nothing stand in the way of their ritual. And then there’s the other type (guilty to say I am a part of this) who let everything be an excuse to not work out! Its time we approach our procrastination head-on and get working on getting fit since we have a pandemic to survive. The collection showcased here includes AI-assisted home gyms ( this personal trainer is not going anywhere), home-fitness and trainer that double up as a mirror when not in use (keep the world guessing about the secret behind our new fitter body) and even traditional gym equipment but revived to be modern so that it won’t clash with your existing interior. Now we truly have no excuse to procrastinate, do we?

Yves Behar’s Forme is the 2020 version of the magic mirror that will make you come out of this quarantine fitter than before. Get in Forme-ation! Forme is a 6 feet tall smart mirror that doubles up as a home fitness trainer and machine. “We wanted to make a fitness machine that’s fully integrated into the home without it being an eyesore,” says Béhar. While similar machines in the market are offering cardio or yoga, with Forme you also get weight lifting, aerobics, and functional training on top of the usual programs. When not in use, the machine’s arms slide back and it turns into an elegant mirror for your home. The instructors are thoroughly vetted and you can track your progress by syncing it with your smart devices. Forme takes care of our body and our mind – that should be our focus for these complex times.

Inspired by their namesake, the Matryoshka Dumbells additional weight can be added to these dumbells by nesting the weights together. Designed by 7 nepo, these innovative fitness free weights take inspiration from an unlikely, surprising source – matryoshka Russian nesting dolls! Like the doll-in-doll system, additional weight can be added by nesting the weights together. With a quick snap-in/snap-out mechanism, you can transition from light to heavy in seconds to accommodate your workout routine without interruption. When you’re finished lifting and want to squeeze in some cardio, the handles double as a jump rope by connecting an included cord.

Introducing the world’s most portable fitness device. Monkii bars 2 is a gym by Dan Vinson and David Hunt you can take anywhere! Paired with the app it’s more than just fitness equipment – it’s your own private gym, personal trainer, and adventure guide built into one. Simply set up in less than a minute by hanging the device from any support structure – like a tree, swing-set, basketball goal, or even the door at home or the hotel. Then get a full-body workout targeting your upper body, core, and legs through hundreds of exercises and workouts.

Designed as a product to let you work and work out at the same time, Brian Oak’s crazy hybrid of a desk-chair and treadmill – named Fitwork, keeps your legs active while you work. Whether you’re sitting in front of a laptop or standing in front of one, it’s the sedentary lifestyle that Fitwork tackles. The setup (which is sure to grab a few eyeballs) comes with an office chair attached to a treadmill underneath, and an elliptical in front. Coupled with an elevating desk, the Fitwork allows you to keep the lower half of your body active while you work, giving you cardio as well as keeping your spine engaged, whether you’re sitting or standing while working.

Habit Furniture is a coffee table/bench that inverts to turn into a workout bench so your fitness equipment does not utilize all your space. Created by Designer Glory Tam and Doctor Albert Au, Habit lets you see and remember your priority of working out with ease by staying in front of you. Whoever said home gyms are bulky!

Mental workout is as important as a physical workout. Wanting to design a seat that guides you into sitting cross-legged, Gao Fenglin’s Meditation Seat can only be sat on in a certain way, directing the user’s behavior and encouraging a seating position that keeps your back upright, and your legs folded inward. The cross-legged position finds itself dating thousands of years back in Oriental and Indian cultures. Used often for meditation as well as for eating, the posture is said to increase blood circulation and joint flexibility, while strengthening bones, and keeping your back upright. It also aids digestion.

With its 450mm edge dimension, the FITT Cube occupies as much space as a footstool and comes with a mini-stepper (with its own seven-segment LCD display), a rotating seat, gripping handles, a plyometric platform, and even resistance bands. The FITT cube also comes with a user guide, exercise chart, and a nutrition guide to keep you on top of your fitness game. Arranged in their optimized formation, the FITT can be flipped over to any side and used to work out on, be it anything from stepping exercises, to twisting exercises, to push-ups or lifts, to even plyometric workouts… the FITT was designed to cater to all.

There’s probably a sizable overlap in the Venn Diagram that shows the intersection between Star Wars fans and Fitness Freaks. Onnit’s range of Star Wars-inspired exercise gear couldn’t be more ideal for that audience. Take for instance the kettlebells that come in rather realistic sculpted cast-iron, modeled using the heads of Darth Vader, The Imperial Stormtrooper, and Boba Fett. The idea behind using masked characters for the kettlebells not only makes for easier molding (imagine how annoyingly detailed a Chewbacca kettlebell would need to be), but also lends a certain gravitas and badass nature to the weights. The kettlebells also weigh in an increasing order of importance, with Boba Fett weighing in at 50 pounds, to the Stormtrooper being 60 pounds, and mister Vader weighing 70 pounds.

If you wish to monitor the effects of your workout, the Circular Smart Ring by Amaury Kosman retains an impressive amount of functionality in a ridiculously small form. It does so, mostly by shifting a lot of the load to your smartphone. The Circular Smart Ring connects to your phone via Bluetooth, giving you all your data in a neatly collated dashboard. During the day, the ring captures your activity, blood oxygen levels, energy levels, calorie burn count, among other metrics, while at night, the ring ambiently tracks your circadian rhythm and records your sleep quality, heart-rate variability, sleep disturbances, REM cycles, and sleep and wake times. Using pretty state-of-the-art data processing and machine-learning technology, the ring, its app, and the app’s assistant Kira help you collectively better understand your health and give you bespoke advice on how to improve it.

And if you plan to return to your old gym, wait till they install sanitizing methods like this award-winning self-sanitizing door handle design!

Students Sum Ming Wong and Kin Pong Li were inspired by the SARS outbreak in the 2000s and figured that a self-sanitizing door handle is more effective than the chemical-based cleaning processes we are using right now. The handle is made of a glass tube with aluminum caps at each end and the entire handle is covered in a powdered photocatalytic coating made from a mineral called titanium dioxide. The bacteria is decomposed through a chemical reaction that is activated by UV light reacting with the thin coating on the glass tube. Powered by an internal generator, the handle converts kinetic energy from the opening/closing motion of the door into light energy and that is how the UV light is always doing its job. This germ-killing product actually destroyed 99.8% of the microbes during lab tests and that is more than what Thanos did with his infinity stones.

We know it’s so much easier to be lazy when no one is watching you, but instead of watching the news and stress-eating our way to another illness, let’s utilize this opportunity to at least start working out! They say the first 21 days are the hardest – well, let’s get done with those difficult days so, by the time we step outside to workout, we will be in a better position than we are now!

This AI Gym-Set uses motion-tracking cameras to let trainers virtually guide your workout

The idea of a sweaty gym bench seemed icky a year ago… now it just seems like a hazard. Given that it’s going to be a while before you can go to the gym, Tempo Studio brings the gym AND the trainer to you.

The entire gym set occupies no more than 3 square feet of space in your house (barely the size of a standing mirror), and the vertical 42-inch screen lets you view your trainer as they exercise, while also letting you see your own stats, like your heartbeat, rep-count, and calorie-burn count. On the inside, the AI-enabled gym-set runs on a 10th-generation Intel i5 processor and an NVIDIA graphics card that powers the motion-tracking camera. The entire gym studio incurs a one-time cost of $1995 for the hardware and $55 each month for the personalized training. The barrier for entry does feel like a little on the more premium side, but then again, you’re really paying for equipment, state-of-the-art tech, and an entire roster of high-caliber coaches and trainers, which doesn’t come cheap. Besides, you’re paying for your long-term health too, which you really can’t put a price on, right??
