This framed disassembled iPhone 5 makes the perfect gift for any tech-lover

As an industrial designer myself, there’s definitely art in the way products are designed, engineered, and crafted together. More so, when the products are pulled apart so you can marvel at the level of intricacy gone into putting it together. Take the iPhone for example, one of the most iconic products of our time. Ask anyone what they think of the iPhone and a hefty percentage of them will say it looks beautiful for sure (some may use the word expensive too), but nobody knows what it looks like on the inside.

Indie art-studio GRID is creating artpieces from these electronics by revealing their, well, inner beauty. The iPhone 5 Framed Edition has a carefully dismantled, arranged, and labeled unit of the smartphone, showing every single component that comes together to form the iconic smartphone. On either side of the display unit lie the front and back, the Gorilla glass display and the machined Aluminum chassis. In between lie the battery, the main board, the different modules, buttons, even the camera, speaker, and the SIM tray! There’s definitely a certain beauty to the iPhone’s complexity, like looking at a da Vinci painting up close so you can see every single brushstroke, crack in the paint, and the canvas texture. If you’re a tech-lover, futurist, and nerd like me, this is no less than looking at the Mona Lisa! Obviously, the phones come pre-loved (used), so expect minor wear and tear.

Flir One iPhone Thermal Camera Released

Thermal cameras can be used for all sorts of things from monitoring body temperature for coaches to finding thermal leaks in your home. The catch is that most thermal cameras cost $1000 or more. During CES 2014 this past January, Flir, a leader in thermal cameras, unveiled a cheaper thermal camera accessory for the iPhone that looks very slick.

The accessory is called the Flir One and it will fit the iPhone 5 and iPhone 5S. The camera sells for $349(USD) and is available starting today. At that price, it is much cheaper than the next cheapest thermal camera in the Flir range priced at around $1000.

Flir says that a version of this camera accessory for Android users is coming next year. A version of the accessory for iPhone 6 models can also be produced quickly according to the company.

You can check out an interactive simulation of the Flir One in action here.

Ztylus Case Adds 4 More Lenses to Your iPhone 5/5S

Ztylus iPhone 5 Case

As good as smartphone cameras may be, we still need accessories or special apps to make the photos better. The Ztylus case, with its 4-in-1 lens system, gives people a bit of a flexibility in terms of how they shoot their photos.

Sony launched the QX lens system not long ago, with the same purpose of offering mobile photographers better quality and more flexibility. The problem with that lens system is that it’s quite a hefty solution, not to mention expensive. The Ztylus case for iPhone 5/5S is the equivalent for Apple’s smartphones, even though someone who has the financial resources to buy such an (overpriced) smartphone must definitely also have the dough for some dope accessories.

The Ztylus case is obviously intended for flagship smartphones and phablets, as the manufacturer only makes a few versions that are compatible with the iPhone, Note 3 or S4. The polycarbonate and aircraft-grade aluminum combo helps you protect the already fragile devices, so even without the lens system, Ztylus has some great functionality.

Ztylus also comes with a kickstand, which means that after shooting some great photos, you can place the phone on the table and watch your creations.

Regardless if you want to shoot macro pictures or you simply want to have images with the fish eye effect, Ztylus can help you.

Smartphone manufacturers have tried for quite a while to make their products as close to real cameras as possible, and Samsung was the closest, with its Galaxy S4 Zoom smartphone-camera hybrid. If the technology implemented in the camera sensor itself is not good enough, people shouldn’t despair, as it’s still possible to achieve decent results using aftermarket products such as the Ztylus 4-in-1 lens system case. The metal frame of the lens kit definitely adds some bulkiness to the smartphone, but that doesn’t mean that its weight goes up by much.

The bad news about the Ztylus 4-in-1 lens system is that you need to purchase the case and the lenses separately.

While the case itself will be available for $39.99, the RV-2 Revolver lens kit will retail for $69.99. The overall price is a bit steep, considering how cheap the Chinese alternatives go nowadays, but if you own a flagship smartphone or phablet, you should accept nothing less than premium accessories.

A Compelling Case

The Backpacker is one impressive case! It’s meant for the iPhone 5 and has a bunch of features that are rarely found in one case alone. The protective case is a phone holder, an amplifier and provides earphone storage. Crafted from silica gel, the manipulation of the back to transform it into a stand and amplifier is pretty clever! Love it!

Backpacker is a 2013 Red Dot Award: Design Concept Winner.

Metal Gear Solid V: Ground Zeroes iDroid iPhone 5/5S Case: !

Last week, Metal Gear creator Hideo Kojima shared images of the iDroid case via Twitter. It makes the iPhone 5 and 5S look like the eponymous cutting edge walkie-talkie used by Big Boss in Metal Gear Solid V: Ground Zeroes. Snake must have been wearing cargo pants in the game, because this thing is huge. metal gear solid v ground zeroes idroid iphone 5 5s case 620x430magnify

Kojima also pointed out the features of the case on Twitter. It has a blue light in place of the in-game item’s holographic display and a fake antenna that’s actually a small stylus. The case also has buttons for the iPhone’s sleep and volume controls. The part of the case that covers the phone’s camera lens and flash can also be removed. As a final touch, Kojima encourages fans who will get the iDroid case to download the free MGS V: GZ app. metal gear solid v ground zeroes idroid iphone 5 5s case 2 620x914magnify

According to Metal Gear Informer, Sentinel will release the iDroid case in Japan this October for ¥7,500 (~$74 USD). I don’t know if it will be released internationally. If you’re more of an Attack on Titan fan, you’ll be glad to know that Sentinel also has a 3D Maneuver Gear hand grip iPhone case on its lineup. Turn Your Smartphone into a Dumbbell with this Case

Get fit with your phone! The ToneFone is a weighted iPhone 5 case that gives you a workout every time you lift the phone. The bulky case is rubber coated with either 1kg or 1.5kg steel weights inside. It’s basically a mini-dumbbell. Sure there’s some aspects of impracticality with having a larger and heavier case but that’s a small tradeoff to looking great, right?
