This smart indoor gardening system uses an automated irrigation system to take care of your plants!

If we learned one thing during quarantine, it was to not underestimate the power of plants. Bedrooms and workspaces alike seem to open up once we incorporate some greenery into the mix. Due to tight corners and lack of natural sunlight, city apartments don’t tend to plants too well. To provide a modular, compact gardening system fit for city living, Elif Bulut created Loop, a smart plant pot that takes care of your greenery while you’re away.

Loop is a smart planting system that feeds and tends to your plants while you’re away through an automated irrigation system. The agriculture system is shaped like a plume, flowering from the top and the bottom, keeping the seed modules in a radial row to form a skirt. Each seed module is detachable and securely locks onto one another through junction sockets, forming a link. Along the underbridge of the system’s lid, LEDs disperse light over the plants, adjusting their levels according to the time of day.

Users simply add seeds to the modules, position the modules to match up with the irrigation system, lock the top water reservoir into place, then watch as the water drips and the plants grow. Loop’s top lid links the system’s base with its irrigation pool so that users can also adjust the amount of water that flows into each module, ranging from sparse or open flow to frequent irrigation. Once the irrigation measure is settled on, the system’s integrated smart technology tends to each plant and keeps track of their condition to achieve optimal indoor settings. Loop provides a way for those who live in the city to still have access to gardening and all of the perks that come with it.

Shaped like a double-sided trumpet, Loop takes the familiar shape of many modern-day home appliances.

Equipped with plant modules and an automated irrigation system, Loop is designed for easy operation.

Loop comes with an integrated LED light system that nourishes plants with energy.

The brightness of the LED lights change according to the time of day.

Loop’s irrigation system allows users to adjust the drip between sparse and frequent amounts.

The modules lock into place with the irrigation system’s faucets.

Each plant module forms the system’s skirt by linking up at junction points.

This smart water irrigation system keeps your plants fresh with zero effort

Many people have dogs and cats as their pets. Many people also have plants as their pets…in my case, my plants are my siblings because that is how much my mother loves them. You wouldn’t leave your pets or children without care when you leave for an extended period of time, so you make arrangements like drop them off to a pet hotel, or have an overnight sitter and maybe a regular gardener depending on your pet. If it is just a day or two, the cost isn’t high but if you are going on a vacation or a long business commitment then you need a smarter solution – especially if it is your plants and garden. Enter Eve Aqua, an award-winning watering system design!

Eve Aqua is a smart water controller that will continue to regularly and quantitatively irrigate your plants, lawn, flowerbed, or backyard. It is compatible with your smart devices as well as Siri so you can set up the home kit and control the system with your phone, tablet, etc. It has 7 watering periods in a day and you can set it up as per your needs and even create an autonomous schedule. These irrigation plans are stored in Eve Aqua so even if your device is disconnected, it will still do the job. It also has a two-channel water distributor so you can use it for irrigation without tying up your faucet. The auto shut-off feature makes sure you never have to watch the clock or come home to a flooded garden. It conserves a lot more water through its smart management system when compared to us doing it manually.

“The appearance is made from black textured plastic and has been offered Australian-certified UV protection. The aluminum frame is made from extruded type, then processed in CNC, Sandblasting, and anodizing. The chamfer on the aluminum frame is processed after sandblasting and anodizing,” says the team about its physical form and safety. It is compatible with other smart home systems and helps you maintain the health of your plants with insight and data. Keep your lawn fresh so you can feel refreshed!

Eve Aqua is a winner of the Red Dot Design Award 2020.

This futuristic vehicle design facilitates irrigation, agriculture and education

Well, 2020 is getting really annoying by the day so I am going to look towards the future. Since I am always told to focus the bright side and be hopeful about the future when the present isn’t great, let’s do it through the design lens. Project Outreach is a modular transport vehicle that was designed to support and develop rural infrastructure in 2045 (of course, this is a concept design so don’t send me an email after 25 years). The conceptual vehicle has a very Tesla-esque aesthetic, it is futuristic without being aggressive like the Cybertruck.

Developing nations need a tech boost to uplift themselves. If the land is mostly flat, the infrastructure is not that hard to create but there are many nations like Africa that have a variety of massive landscapes that will need powerful machines like Project Outreach to do it efficiently. The vehicle’s main aim is reaching out as the name suggests. The goal is to reach the communities in need and provide supplies to facilitate rural development by being a one-stop-shop through its multifunctional modules – Water Mod, Plant Mod, Work Mod are just a few examples. This is meant for micro-communities and the staff will deliver the module to them and change it out when needed.

The Water Mod is equipped with irrigation and sanitation technology to help areas where there is a draught or generally improve water crisis. The Plant Mod comes with agricultural tools to help seed crops in a controlled environment and provide relief for food shortage. The Work Mod is more for research, study, educational needs, and providing a small living quarter. The concept design is something that will be a blessing to refugee communities. Imagine how one vehicle can be a school for a small group of children who have nothing else to hold on to, provide food and water in a crisis with capabilities to expand into a medical space if needed.

Project Outreach makes me hopeful about a future where can empower those who communities who were hard to reach out to. It may be a design but it radiates values and morals that are rooted deeply in kindness and making a positive change – after all, isn’t that what humanity is all about? We don’t have a wand but we have imagination, design thinking and equipment to make it happen so I’ll say that is close enough.

Efficiently Water your Lawn… and Intruders!

You’d think that an autonomous lawn-watering robot and a surveillance camera would seem like an odd combo, but trust me. Your eyes are yet to be opened. Yardian is your no-nonsense, reliable Yard Guardian. Aside from its clever name, it keeps a track of your yard in a way that puts multi-taskers to shame. The Yardian comes with a powerful surveillance camera that gives you footage of your lawn in real-time. Not only is it great for keeping track of your lawn’s progress, it allows you to keep an eye on children or pets playing in the yard, or even keep a check on the house/garden staff. Its rugged, waterproof design means you can mount it outdoors and not worry about inclement weather. Along with that, Yardian’s advanced cloud servers power the irrigation system to water your garden, optimizing water usage based on weather as well as your city/state’s water restriction permits. The servers run Yardian’s proprietary smart-algorithm that bases itself on EPA’s Watersense program to efficiently use and conserve water.

The Yardian also puts its camera to good use by allowing it to act as a surveillance cam for your garden. It comes with night vision and a motion detector that captures images and videos of intruders, which it then broadcasts directly to your phone… allowing you to alert the authorities, or switch the sprinklers on to give your neighborhood thief a good scare! Isn’t this what technology should be for?!

The Yardian is a functional as well as financial win. It extends its internal camera’s functionality, essentially doing two jobs efficiently. Its powerful software also enables it to use water judiciously, not only saving up on the precious resource, but also syncing with local databases to make sure you don’t rack up a hefty water-restriction fine! Plus, given the opportunity to drench trespassers with the single press of a button, I’m sold!
