Apple Hires Tag Heuer’s VP of Sales, Is the iWatch On the Way?

Tag Heuer Patrick Pruniaux

As rumours surrounding Apple’s iWatch device heat up, the company makes an interesting hire suggesting that the gadget is on the way.

Have you heard about the rumoured iWatch; Apple’s wearable device that’s said to have a fitness focus to keep you updated of notifications on your smartphone as well as giving you feedback about your health? Well plenty of us certainly have and Apple obviously have too, but they’ve kept completely schtum on the speculation with nary a statement offered to the media from the Cupertino, Calif. based company. They don’t really need to say or do anything for suggestions to continue, though the electronics company have now tempered the flames of the fire like a hosepipe of gasoline by hiring Patrick Pruniaux who was the VP of Sales at watch brand Tag Heuer.

The reason Pruniaux’s hiring is key is because he’s not a brainy engineer, or a man with a plan of what the iWatch’s features could be once the device comes to market but rather, he is the guy who can help Apple figure out which of the iWatch’s features will help it shift the most units. Pruniaux’s job will be to get the dang thing on our arms and make it seem like a must have item.

What Pruniaux’s hire also means is that the iWatch is perhaps quite far into development (if Apple are looking at how to sell the thing anyway) and that they need a way to one up other smartwatch offerings with Microsoft rumoured to be working on a professional wrist device too and even Google has released a form of their Android operating system specially for wearable devices. That all points to the iWatch being released later this year (after a reveal in September alongside the iPhone 6) while Pruniaux’s Tag Heuer background points to it being presented as a rather expensive luxury device that we’ll all clamour over ourselves to buy. But will the iWatch really be worth it? We’ll have to wait and see but we’ll keep you posted once we know more.

Apple Smart Watch Scheduled for October: Nikkei

Apple Smart WatchAccording to Japanese newspaper Nikkei, Apple announced on Thursday at the Worldwide Developers Conference that it will be releasing a new wearable watch-like smart device as soon as this October. According to the report, the ‘iWatch’ will have a curved OLED touchscreen display and will be able to collect health-related data such as calories, sleep tracking, blood glucose level and blood oxygen levels and integrate with smart phones.

The report indicated that the smart watch from Apple will also run on iOS 8, the new operating system recently announced for the iPhone and iPad, and will be partnering with Nike, which could be marking the end for the FuelBand and all coincides with the release of a new OS in the fall along with the previously announced Health and Healthkit applications.

iPhone 6 May Feature Temperature, Humidity and Pressure Sensors

iPhone 6 Barometer

iPhone 5 has had its time in the spotlight, so now iPhone 6 rumors should start gaining momentum. The latest suggest that Apple’s next smartphone may turn the device into a hygrometer, barometer and thermometer.

The idea of integrating these sensors into a smartphone is anything but new. Last year’s Samsung Galaxy S4 already had pressure and temperature sensors, so all that Apple did was to get inspired by the South Korean company. As a paradox, Apple might sue Samsung at a later point, claiming that they stole the idea from an iPhone launched in the future. Even the iPhone 5S was meant to come with more and better sensors than it was released with, but I guess that in Apple’s case, it’s better late than never.

Sun Chang Xu, news chief analyst at ESM-China, claims that sources close to the matter confirmed that Apple is looking to implement such technologies in its next flagship. In case there is any confusion, I should tell you that the pressure sensor does not refer to blood pressure (which would be really hard, if not impossible to determine using a smartphone), but to atmospheric pressure.

Apple’s great array of sensors makes a lot of sense in the context of iOS 8, which is said to bring support for them. The next mobile operating system developed by the Cupertino company will actually bring the Quantified Self closer to reality. Obviously, that has a greater meaning for the company’s iWatch, which should be able to measure a lot of parameters, including blood pressure, hydration, heart rate, calories burned, glucose levels and so on.

In the great scheme of things, the sensors and features that the iWatch should carry (given that a team of tech medical experts has been co-opted to help develop it) make the iPhone 6′s sensors not that spectacular, yet realistic.

It would be interesting to see whether Apple fans have missed such features in their smartphones, and so, if they could find various applications for these sensors. In time, I’m sure that there will be plenty of apps developed that will make use of the temperature, pressure and humidity sensors integrated in the iPhone 6. Aside from that, we’re looking forward to see what other rumors related to Apple’s flagship will surface in the future.

The New iWatch With iOS 7 And No Siri

Being practical is the main reason behind shunning Siri, speakers and mobile connectivity in this new iWatch concept. As a typical SmartWatch, this concept hosts some very non-typical features. For example, to save on battery consumption, the design includes solar energy and wireless recharging. Siri and cellular connectivity are not included because of their power draining capabilities.

The designer hopes that the imaginative iOS 7 will have off-line Maps integration. Design-wise buttons and holes are not a part of the deal. This is because watches are used to rough usage; fewer buttons and slots mean lesser damages and more room for the battery. A notification via vibrations is perhaps its best feature and something most SmartWatches should consider. Overall a near representation of time!
