Tactile needs a Senior Industrial Designer

Tactile is a high-touch design studio where the creative, technical, and strategic come together. They design meaningful physical and digital experiences for everyday moments and the one of a kind. The team is made up of industrial designers, interaction designers, graphic designers, and engineers who create sought-after products and experiences through research and strategy.

Tactile has partnered with the Xbox ID team to design limited edition consoles and controllers.

The Opportunity

We’re looking for senior level Industrial Designers (contract-only positions) in our Boston studio (must be local). You will have the opportunity to collaborate with cross-disciplinary teams from idea to conception with design at its core. We work on a wide spectrum of exciting and challenging projects that allow our designers to gain new experiences, learn and advance their craft. An intimate, open studio that runs on coffee and camaraderie. You’ll fit in great here if you’re passionate, hard-working and don’t take yourself too seriously.

Responsibilities

● Both independent and team-oriented to design and develop products and experiences for a wide variety of subjects.
● Able to illustrate your ideas and communicate findings effectively in presentations/meetings, adapting style and detail level to client and project needs.
● Well versed in design methodologies and display excellence at all stages of the design process, including early concept development, sketching, building prototypes, CAD modeling, rendering and creating high-fidelity polished presentations.
● Motivated to conduct your own informal user research, market research, and usability testing to get to the heart of the problem.
● Grounded in your understanding of materials and processes and excited to push the envelope.
● Great at handling multiple workstreams with design direction.

Education and Experience Required

● 7-10 years of relevant experience working in product design
● BA/BS in Industrial Design or related training
● High level of proficiency with industry standard design and prototyping tools; CAD, Adobe, Keyshot, etc.
● Portfolio of relevant work examples
● Excellent verbal communication and presentation skills
● Impeccable attention to detail
● Ability to work on and complete multiple tasks in a timely fashion
● Enthusiasm to adapt to diverse projects and clients, from med-tech to industrial to consumer electronics

The First Years, a division of TOMY International, is looking for a motivated, multi-talented, and energetic product designer who loves to get their hands dirty, to dig deep and solve problems, and to carry their inspired design intent through every touchpoint of a product launch. The ideal candidate will mix Industrial with Graphic Design capabilities to create a holistic product solution. Children don’t come with an instruction manual; so for more than 65 years, we have been helping new parents by creating valued products that enhance and support their perfectly imperfect journey.
In this role, you will have the opportunity to champion new ideas while working closely with mechanical engineers, brand leaders, packaging, and other talented Industrial Designers. You will be influencing design on a cross-functional team where communication and collaboration is paramount. You will contribute directly to product categories such as Bath & Potty, Nursery, Toddler Feeding, Infant Care and Play, while also contributing to the development of our licensed products lines.
This role operates out of the Canton, MA office and reports to the Director of Design.

Responsibilities:

• Participate in immersion programs including store visits, design research, and focus groups
• Creative based activities – brainstorming, prototyping, etc.
• Frequent collaboration and communication with internal partners
• Application of insight into innovative design solutions and product concepts
• Regularly present design work to category leaders
• Knowledge of competitive landscape, market segments
• Ongoing analysis of market trends and category influencers
Qualifications:
• Bachelor’s Degree in Industrial Design or equivalent
• Minimum 3 years of experience in product or fashion design
• Experience using industry tools – Adobe Creative Suite, Sketchbook, Keyshot, SolidWorks, etc.
• Animation experience in Flash or After Effects a plus

Requirements:

• Strong fundamentals – sketching, concept creation, form development, and visual communication
• Understanding of manufacturing materials and processes
• Excellent communication skills – English speaking
• Creative thinker + problem solver
• Ability to handle multiple tasks and assignments simultaneously
• Ability to identify trends and opportunities in the marketplace
• A proactive worker with a positive attitude
• Experience bringing products to market a plus

It’s important that you have a background or an interest in designing as well as a penchant for writing! Your words will help guide professional designers as well as design lovers understand design better, and appreciate it with greater perception. Your writing will help broaden horizons and widen minds!

Responsibilities

  • The Editor will curate content and compose articles discussing and dissecting design. We love people who can speak freely about what they think is good design, draw parallels between design works, and spot design trends. Your articles will aim to inspire both designers and non-designers to learn about and appreciate relevant innovative work.
  • The Editor will be required to prepare/edit images pertaining to the article.
  • Also as an Editor, you may be required to attend national/international design awards, festivals, and exhibitions to represent Yanko Design.

Required Skills/Experience

  • Background in or interest in Industrial Design, Technology, and Transportation Design. (Also being a reader of Yanko Design would go a long way!)
  • At least 2 years of experience in writing (online and/or offline).
  • Proficiency in US English.
  • Knowledge of Adobe Photoshop for basic Photo Editing Skills (Preferable if the applicants already have access to the software).
  • Knowledge and familiarity with online publishing tools (WordPress).
  • Basic know-how of HTML would be appreciated.
  • Familiarity with Social Media Tools.
  • A Desktop or Laptop with the aforementioned software and a stable internet connection.
