This zero-waste laptop bag tries to make up for your laptop’s environmental sins

Our civilization now relies heavily on all sorts of computers, but these products are sadly also killing of our planet in the process. From their production to their daily use to their disposal, desktops and laptops contribute to the sad state of our planet. Even worse, we tend to buy accessories for these devices that themselves create more problems for our environment. Fortunately, designers and brands have started to become more conscious of how even small things like accessory can pile up to become a sustainability disaster and are taking steps to minimize their negative impact on the environment. This laptop case, for example, is made from leftover fabric to become something fashionable that also shows a bit of university spirit, too.

Designer: Shelly Xu Design (SXD) x Harvard Innovation Labs

It’s easy to take for granted how clothes can be harmful to the environment because they seem biodegradable enough. While some textile and dyes aren’t exactly sustainable, those aren’t the only environmental problems they cause. The fashion industry alone is responsible for million tons of textile waste every year for leftover scraps and wasted fabric. This waste that would have otherwise piled up on landfills are the very source materials that Shelly Xu Design (SXD) uses to create masterpieces that make a statement in more ways than one.

It’s that kind of boldness that SXD is bringing to an industry outside fashion, with a laptop case that similarly uses those wasted fabric to produce something that will keep your laptop safe and snug while you go about your business in school or in the office. The main bag is made from white neoprene taken from scuba diving sets while the red handle and pockets are source from leftover polo shirt materials. The entire bag is made waterproof using ecorepel which biomimics how waterfowl feathers are able to repel water, hence the name.

This zero-waste “ILab Bag” is simple yet fashionable while also being functional. The bag is reversible, so you can choose between a plain white appearance or accented red. The red cloth parts also function as pockets and handles, going beyond mere embellishments. And when the laptop bag is fully unfolded, that side forms a red “H” on white, a nod to Harvard’s name and colors.

The SXD zero-waste laptop case might not be extraordinary in terms of form and function, but that isn’t its primary objective anyway. Instead, it tries to serve as an inspiration and model for how recycled waste materials can be transformed into high-quality, beautiful products. If more companies start producing swag these way, it could eventually lead to a transformation of an industry that often doesn’t give a second thought to its long-term effects on the only planet that we have.

Your Office To-Go

The result of his own personal 30 day challenge to produce a product per day, designer Simon Ellison has given the laptop case and stand the ultimate innovation! With the current movement towards portable EVERYTHING comes a product designed to seamlessly fit within this new lifestyle. Previously, there was no portable solution for laptop stands. With all the co-working spaces and collaborations that now take place it seems only natural that the case evolves to fit this need. Combining the two products into a hybrid this new case protects whilst you travel and unfolds to give circulation and consistent height across cinema displays.

Using a live hinge formed within the durable plastic shell gives the height needed to elevate the laptop. This model features two snap out supports to give rigidity to the sideways movement. Combined with cutouts to lay cables through this case gives added cable routing between your secondary screen and laptop to keep your workspace tidy.

Brik Case Turns MacBooks into Expensive LEGO Baseplates

We’ve seen LEGO-compatible iPhone cases, so why not one for Apple’s laptops as well? The Brik Case is compatible with MacBook Air and MacBook Pro models released in 2013 or later. It works not just with LEGO but with Mega Bloks, PixelBlocks, KRE-O or K’NEX pieces as well.

Maker Jolt Team says its case works best with 1×1 bricks. Fortunately the case comes with 100 generic 1×1 bricks, so all you’ll need is a bit of creativity and you’re good to go.

Pledge at least $30 (USD) on Kickstarter to receive a Brik Case as a reward.

Review: Mixbag Transforming Bag

mixbag Review: Mixbag Transforming Bag
The nice folks from Mixbag sent us over a sample of their awesome transforming bag to try out and review. What makes this bag unique is that it can be flipped, twisted, hooked, zipped, folded, and otherwise contorted into 10 different bag styles. So many ways, that it actually comes with a set of instructions showing you what it can do:
Instruction how to transform Review: Mixbag Transforming Bag
The bag is essentially two bags that can be zipped together. As you can tell from the instructions, the bags can be used together as one big bag, or you can be separated to use only one side if you don’t need as much bag. That’s flexibility! You can see that in the photos below showing the front and back of the bag- note in the bottom picture I partially unzipped them from one another:

On the back you’ll notice 9 circles on each side in an X formation. Those are actually magnets that keep the two halves together when using the bag in some ways. All of those triangular clips let you attach the strap as needed. As you can (sort of) tell from the photo below, inside both sections of the bag there are a number of velcro and zippered pockets to keep your stuff organized as well as a stiff divider. The inside lining is a waterproof nylon.

One of the pockets has a clip on a string to hold your keys. There’s also a mesh bottle holder that unzips and pulls out from beneath one of the smaller pockets. It comes in two sizes, designed to hold 11″ or 13″ MacBooks (or similar sized computers or iPads). The size we are reviewing here in the 11″. The Mixbag has even more tricks up it’s sleeves. Unzip the bottom of one of the larger pockets and out drops a nylon pouch that expands the pocket size:

This essentially doubles the size of the bag, allowing you to use it in “backpack” mode (#3 in the manual above). The Mixbag is made from a thick cotton exterior and comes in two colors, as shown for the smaller bag and black for the larger sized bag. But wait, that’s not all. Stuffed inside yet another pocket is a waterproof nylon rain cover with stretchy elastic around the border (like a fitted sheet) to wrap around the bag, as demonstrated below with our security guard:

They really thought of everything, right? Overall we really like the Mixbag. It is extremely functional with all the different configurations and pockets but still has a stylish urban sophisticated look to it. We like the many zippered pockets and the fact that each zipper has a pull on it and zips smoothly without getting tangled in the fabric. The bag feels very sturdy inside and out. The strap is thick and feels comfortable and we like that it has a quick release fastener.

While I was not exactly a fan of all the different modes of using it (example: over the shoulder with one half on the front of your body and one half on the back just felt weird), there were certainly enough ways that were great and useful. I felt like it would be more comfortable if the strap was just a bit longer for some applications, such as carrying it over the straps going over the shoulder across the body. It is also a bit pricy, but obviously there is a great deal of workmanship that goes into such a complex bag.

Overall the Mixbag is a really useful, versatile, and stylish bag that has a lot going for it. It works as a laptop/iPad bag as well a travel or everyday bag. It packs a large number of pockets and compartments into a small package. It separates into two bags so if you just need a smaller pack, you don’t have to haul around excess baggage. It’s a very solid well thought-out bag. You can pick one up at Mixbag’s site.

Urban Camouflage Case Turns Your Laptop into a Newspaper

People with flawed morals and thieving hands would steal a laptop in a heartbeat, but I doubt any of them would want to steal your newspaper. So put this knowledge to good use and protect your notebook in more ways than one with the Urban Camouflage case.

It’s basically a cushy sleeve that looks like a newspaper on the outside. The catch is that the newspaper isn’t actually in English, so that knocks a couple of points off believability – unless you happen to live in Spain - then it’s perfect.

But at least that also reduces the possibility that someone grabs it accidentally because he or she actually thought that it was their newspaper, right? Right.

These quirky Urban Camouflage cases are available from the Fancy for $80(USD).

Clothing for Gadgets: Play Dress-Up with Your iPad

When I’m done using my laptop, I stow it away in a sleeve printed with zebra stripes all over. The sleeve looks pretty beat up from months and months of use, but I just haven’t found the time to look for another one that would appeal to my taste. But I don’t think I can say no to these handsome outfits, cut and re-sewn especially and specifically for laptops and iPads.

Laptop OutfitThese are the brainchild of Richard, who owns Finders and Keeper’s. He basically puts together an outfit (presumably from his old clothes), custom tailors them to fit your notebook or iPad, then lines it with soft organic cotton to make sure your gadget stays safe and snug inside.

Laptop Outfit1

Pretty fun, right? I never thought I’d see the day when we’d actually get to dress up iPads and laptops as we would dress up our nephews or sons. (Not that I have any children yet.)

This line of computerwear (as Richard calls them) is available from his Etsy shop, where they range in price from $55 to $75(USD).
