LG’s New Display Concept Blurs the Lines Between Reel and Real Even More for Gen – Z

In the ever-evolving landscape of technological innovation, one cannot underestimate the power of collaboration between academia and industry. A prime example of this synergy is the groundbreaking concept design project “Forme,” born from a collaboration between Korea Design Membership and LG Electronics in 2022. This visionary project aims to capture the essence of Gen Z’s content consumption habits while redefining the relationship between users and their displays.

People like us, Generation Z, often referred to as digital natives, are reshaping the way people interact with technology. For us, devices are not just tools; they are companions, woven intricately into our daily lives. It’s mostly because we have been born into the age of playing on iPads. (Well, I am a little older than that, so I relate to both sides on a decent level.) “Forme” recognizes this symbiotic relationship and envisions a display that becomes a true ‘Best Friend’ to the Gen Z clan.

From waking up to winding down, Forme seamlessly integrates into the user’s daily routine. This concept acknowledges the strong connection Gen Z has with their devices – sleeping and waking up together, mirroring life patterns, and acting as a canvas for personal expression.

Gen Z yearns for a display that resonates with their emotions, habits, and aspirations. The Forme Display steps into this role as a true confidante – a ‘Best Friend’ who is there through thick and thin. This friendship is underscored by the display’s unique ability to sleep and wake with its user, mirroring the shared moments of rest and rejuvenation. In a society where the boundaries between technology and life are increasingly blurred, this concept breathes life into the display, making it an extension of the self.

The Forme Display ingeniously incorporates an age-old element – window blinds. By drawing inspiration from the familiarity of blinds, the design encapsulates the essence of privacy, control, and versatility. The display itself is reminiscent of a protective roof, a shelter under which Gen Z can express themselves freely. This intuitive design metaphor allows users to easily lift the display, revealing a canvas that showcases not only digital content but also personal mementos, smartphones, and everyday essentials.

The rise of vertical content, synonymous with the snack culture of Gen Z owing to platforms like Instagram, TikTok, and Snapchat, is seamlessly accommodated by Forme Display’s innovative structure. Breaking away from the constraints of traditional horizontal displays, this concept embraces the future by harmoniously integrating both formats. The layered structure not only caters to this duality but also provides a visual representation of the blinds’ intricate mechanism.

The Forme Display embodies a delicate balance between aesthetics and functionality. The carefully chosen ‘Rare Low’ material wraps around the body, imparting a sense of intimacy and warmth. This ‘roof’ serves a dual purpose – not only is it visually striking, but it also offers a practical grip to easily lift the display. Meanwhile, the bottom speaker not only enhances audio quality but also contributes to the product’s overall stability. This amalgamation of elements transforms the Forme Display into a piece of art that seamlessly fits into the user’s environment.

In an era characterized by multifunctionality, “Forme” rises to the challenge. It includes provisions to accommodate a smartphone or essential office supplies, showcasing its adaptability to a variety of tasks. Innovation often hinges on achieving balance, and “Forme” achieves this equilibrium in terms of weight and portability. The design takes into consideration the modern Gen Z lifestyle, where mobility is paramount. By incorporating the concept of a ‘roof’ as the main structure, the product maintains a lightweight yet robust disposition, making it an ideal companion for the on-the-go generation.

The Forme Display Concept stands as a beacon of innovation, a harmonious marriage of tradition and cutting-edge technology. It is not merely a display; it is a friend, a confidante, a custodian of memories, and a canvas for expression. As Gen Z navigates the ever-evolving landscape of digital interactions, the Forme Display serves as a constant companion, adapting, evolving, and encapsulating the spirit of a generation. In this era of rapid change, the Forme Display Concept invites us to embrace the future while cherishing the elements that make us who we are.

LG Display just unveiled a set of ‘paper-thin’ speakers designed to be fitted inside cars

Dubbed the “Thin Actuator Sound Solution”, this latest innovation from LG hopes to usher in a new, more immersive era for car-based infotainment. The slim audio panels don’t compromise on sound quality, the company was quick to mention.

While slim speakers aren’t entirely new, this application for them definitely is. Any panel or surface capable of vibrating has the ability to be a speaker, and television and smartphone makers have tried turning displays into speakers by getting them to vibrate ever so gently, enough to create audio that can transmit from the display all the way to the wearer. LG’s Thin Actuator Sound Solution brings that technology to the insides of cars, potentially allowing display panels and other surfaces to vibrate and generate audio that fills the car’s interiors. Traditionally, speakers have occupied a fair bit of space given the voice coils, cones and magnets used in their construction – this meant building speakers into doors given their hollow design. Thanks to the Thin Actuator Sound Solution, carmakers can turn virtually any surface into a speaker, allowing for a more immersive soundscape where audio plays from the sides, back, front, and perhaps even the top of the car.

“The Thin Actuator Sound Solution comes in a passport-like size (150mm x 90mm) with a thickness of 2.5mm, equivalent to that of two coins stacked together, and a light weight of 40g, making it just 30 percent of the weight and 10 percent of the thickness of a conventional car speaker”, said LG in a press release. Working in partnership with a global audio company, LG ensured that these panels provide rich audio that doesn’t deviate from the quality that passengers have come to expect. Moreover, the speakers don’t rely on rare-earth elements like Neodymium magnets to produce audio, boosting their overall eco-friendly factor.

The Thin Actuator Sound Solution has already received the CES® 2023 Innovation Award in the ‘In-Vehicle Entertainment & Safety’ category. LG is set to debut the ‘invisible’ audio panels at CES 2023 in Las Vegas this coming year.

LG’s TV lets the good times “roll”

lg_rollable_tv_1

“Bigger is better” seems to be the common consensus with televisions, with Samsung literally making a television the size of a wall… but the ‘bigger’ question remains, when does size start becoming a hindrance? The large phone market stopped at around 6 inches because any bigger and the phone is literally too large to use, so the question remains, how big must a TV be to be the biggest it should be?

LG doesn’t really have an answer to that question, but it has a solution. Flexible displays. LG’s Rollable TV concept features a 65-inch mammoth of a screen that’s actually as flexible as fabric (and as a result, super thin), as it rolls into a housing that’s a fraction of its size. What’s more interesting is that this ability doesn’t necessarily mean a compromise on quality because the Rollable TV features a 4K UHD display. Did I also mention, it rolls up into a cylinder?!

LG’s new Jack-in-the-box 4K projector!

lg_4k_projector_1

Turn the hand crank on a jack-in-the-box and the lid bursts open to reveal the human-shaped toy inside. LG’s projector was designed pretty much the same way, except the lid opens to reveal one of the world’s best 4K Ultra High Definition projectors on the inside.

The HU80KA Projector, as it’s called, is groundbreaking not only because it massively shrinks the footprint of 4K projectors, but it does so in a format that looks completely a class apart. This isn’t a projector you’d mount on a ceiling to mask its ugliness. You’d want it to adorn your living room floor because the HU80KA sits majestically like a beautiful black block capable of projecting over 8 million pixels (at 150 inches) of awesomeness on any wall. The projector comes with USB, Ethernet and HDMI ports, along with wireless connectivity and even packs two 7W speakers for stunning audio to accompany the stunning video. What’s more, unlike most projectors that aren’t designed to be moved or shifted, lest the intricate parts inside get displaced, the HU80KA comes built with a handle that lets you carry your 4K from room to room, or even to parties because with this gorgeous piece of tech and its eye-poppingly incredible and immersive video projection, you’re sure to be invited to a lot of parties…

Dual Hearing – Speaker and Earbuds!

The Dual-Mode Headphone is a Bluetooth headset that can be used in two ways: as an embedded speaker and as earbuds. The design for embedded speakers stems from the need of folks who are outdoorsy and who like to listen to music while doing their things. For example, when you cycle, jog or hike headphones shut out external sounds and can be dangerous. The embedded speaker in Dual-Mode Headphone lets you to listen to your favorite songs in the ‘open air’, without shutting out external noises.

In crowded places the ear buds work the best. They attach magnetically to the sides of the headphone set.

How it works:

  • To make the music play simply tap the front part.
  • Tapping again turns it off.
  • Swiping the side backwards turns the up the music volume, and swiping forward turns it down.
