RC Shrek The Swamp Engine: Move Over, Thomas!

Inspired by the DreamWorks movies (and presumably at least one fever dream), YouTube channel Studson Studio decided to build a Shrek-themed R/C tank engine. In the video, Studson takes us all aboard for the entire locomotive journey, steaming along from concept to the very last stop. Those were a bunch of train references in case you didn’t notice.

The train’s powerhouse is a small R/C car, and its Shrek head is from a PEZ dispenser, but the rest of the train is constructed almost entirely out of found objects, including a toilet paper holder for the boiler, wooden coffee stirrers, Pogs for the wheels, thumbtacks for the bumpers, and broken sticks. The final result is most impressive, and would undoubtedly give Thomas the Tank Engine a run for his money hauling terrified train cars.

Some people are just so talented. It’s a shame I didn’t get any of that talent. I’m only really good at starting projects, getting frustrated with the way they’re going, and abandoning them half-finished. Oh — and breaking things. I’m also great at breaking things.

Pikachu + Chewbacca = Pikachewie

Given all of the things that Disney has purchased over the years, we’re surprised they have yet to buy Nintendo or at least the Pokémon franchise. If they did, they’d probably create some crazy Star Wars / Pokémon mashup merch. For now, we’ve got fans to make us some cool toys instead.

What you’re looking at here is what would happen in the unlikely event that Chewbacca and a Pikachu had a child. Isn’t Pikachewie is adorable? I mean not as cute as Baby Yoda, but he’d give Baby Groot a run for his money for sure. This fun mashup figure comes from custom toy maker Kody Koala, whose Etsy shop is loaded with weird and wonderful creations, like a buff version of the Domino’s Pizza Noid, a pudgy Sonic the Hedgehog, and Waluigi in a mech suit.

Pikachewie measures about 3.5″ tall and is made from cast resin with custom paint to give him his cherubic red cheeks. So trainers, get out your Poké Balls now and head over to Etsy, where you can catch this little guy for just $19. Just don’t make him mad or he might try and rip your other figures arms off.

Mario Meets Léon The Professional

One of my favorite movies of all time is Léon: The Professional. Not only was it the big screen debut of Natalie Portman, but she played a complete badass in the film, which she starred in at age 12, but it was helmed by the wonderfully over-the-top French director Luc Besson. The film is packed with insane amounts of violence and destruction, as Portman’s character Mathilda becomes sidekick to hitman Jean Reno’s Léon.

On a completely unrelated note, I also love Super Mario Bros., which – on the surface – appears to have nothing in common with The Professional other than the large amount of killing that goes on – though in Nintendo’s case, the violence is against Koopas and Piranha Plants. Perhaps seeing those tentative parallels, the toy designers at Fools Paradise decided to combine the two.

The one issue with their stock version of the toys is that Mathilda has been give the blond hair and blue eyes of Princess Peach, so they went ahead fixed that with their “Director’s Cut,” bestowing her with a look much more screen accurate to Portman with her dark hair and brown eyes. The new look is much more serious, and better suits the feel of the film.

There’s also a blacked-out version of Boo, Bullet Bill, and that killer plant along for the ride. This set of custom vinyl figures is something I would thrilled to have in my collection, but sadly it appears the toys are already sold out.

Doctor Strange Goes to the Waterpark

Marvel fan Jesse McLaren turned his nerdy talents towards putting Doctor Strange into some odd situations. The geek says that he took every shot from the behind-the-scenes features where Doc Strange was in front of a green screen and edited him into a waterpark.

You can watch the video in the tweet embedded below and lol along with us. The music selection seems especially appropriate for a water park.

The result is more entertaining than the Doctor Strange movie. I’m of the firm opinion that was the lamest of the Marvel movies in recent memory. I mean they can’t all rock like the original Iron Man flicks, but they could be less boring, right? Maybe I’m alone in not liking the flick, but I do think McLaren’s video is pretty amusing.

Super Mario Odyssey Meets Grand Theft Auto IV

Super Mario Odyssey for the Nintendo Switch looks pretty good – especially those bits where he’s roaming around the big city. But I think we can do better. We need to put Mario into Grand Theft Auto. And that is just what CrowbCat did. He used a GTA IV mod, made by JL MODS HD, that turns the main character into Mario. Lets a go!

Check out this video that places Mario in our own chaotic world. In this case Mario gets a little too real as he does things like walk in front of a speeding vehicle, bleeds out in a bowling alley, gets chased by a gang of thugs, and even hijacks a helicopter. Check it all out in the video (note: there’s some PG-13 language)…

Honestly, this would make a much better game in my opinion, but it isn’t kid friendly, that’s for sure.

Beautifully Mashed-Up Darth Vader Helmet & Homer Simpson

Darth Homer

There’s nothing hotter at the moment than Star Wars, which means, among other things, a lot of artistic mashups. One of the coolest ideas of that line we’ve seen recently is a Darth Vader helmet with a very strong Homer Simpson influence.

While there’s nothing really relating one of the greatest villains of all time and one of the biggest idiots we’ve seen on our TV screen over the last 25 years, somehow this works. Maybe it’s the Vader helmet shape that everyone loves, or simply The Simpsons yellow coloring and scheme that has become universally loved.

This wonderful piece of pop art was made by ice.md and johnpaulduray takes the sting out of the seriousness that is Darth Vader in about everything he does and says, although his helmet, responsible for his heavy breathing, will always be his most memorable feature. [Spoiler warning] It’s also the only thing of his that appears in Episode VII, The Force Awakens, although his spirit does have more influence than just one scene in the trailers and the film.

This isn’t the first time someone has done a great job of mashing up the Simpsons with something. One of our older posts (although it does check out) goes through a wide variety of Simpsons Mashups, including one Star Wars reference, maybe the coolest of the bunch.

Some people have a very different take on Fox’s royal cartoon family, turning them into Kickass Simpsons Chairs, which are probably more comfortable than they seem to be.

8 Amazing Pop Culture Mashups Ideas for T-Shirts

One of the best artists to combine humor with a lot pop culture references in his work is Matt Cowan who came up with another excellent idea for a series of pop culture mash-ups that would make incredibly cool T-shirts.

Prince Jonosnoke

Jon Snow is the most emo of the Game of Thrones characters and Princess Mononoke might be the best of what Hayao Miyazaki gave to the world.

Combining the worlds of a TV show inside a TV show cat & mouse that hate each other with that of a manga series called Ichi the Killer.

Bender’s Game

Bender, one of the most obnoxious robots in the history of television, and the Ender’s Game book, which turned out to be a slightly crappy film.

A combination of the delightful Peppa Pig and the Iron Man duo of Tony Stark and Pepper Potts.

R2-D2 Mickey Mouse Ears

You knew things like this would be coming eventually ever since Disney purchased the rights to the Star Wars franchise. If you’ve visited Disney recently, then perhaps you spotted the theme park exclusive mashup DELUXE R2D2 Mickey Ears Hat R2 D2 Mickey Mouse Ears. Mickey Mouse and R2-D2- that’s two iconic figures in one hat right there. It even has buttons that stick out (which I’m guessing is the “deluxe” part?). A definite conversation piece and a must-have for anyone who likes Disney, Star Wars, or both.
