How tech is changing the world of sports memorabilia

The story of Super Bowl 51 should have been all about one of the most remarkable comebacks in football history. Despite trailing by 16 points with about eight minutes to go in the fourth quarter, the New England Patriots rallied to take the game to o...

The Dark Knight’s Batpod Is Up For Auction

the-dark-knights-batpod-up-for-auction

I firmly believe that The Dark Knight was one of the best movies ever made. Aside from the late Heath Ledger’s legendary performance, the movie was bursting with amazing elements, like its soundtrack, its complex but rich storyline, and it’s remarkable vehicles. One of these, the Batpod, is now up for auction. It’s one of six such bikes that were built for the film.

This incredible vehicle features a custom-made chassis with 31″ Hoosier racing tyres and a Honda 750 engine. Fibreglass body panels finished in metallic grey paint cover the bike’s engine and handlebars. A pair of cannon barrels made of plastic, resin and fibreglass are secured at the front of the vehicle, and a laser targeting unit is fitted above the right hand grip. A radiator and hydraulics are fitted behind the saddle, and the braking system is operated by controls on the left handle and the right pedal. Black foam padding is installed on the body, saddle and knee rests for comfort whilst riding.

Well-used on both productions, as well as in the promotion of the films as part of the Warner Bros. archive, the Batpod displays some wear to the body panels and some light corrosion on the chassis, with damage to the left gun mount as a result of use on se

We don’t expect you to buy this and ride it around or anything; we’re not even sure that’s legal. But for anyone looking to own a piece of movie history, the Batpod is expected to fetch somewhere around £60000 – £80000 ($80,000USD – $105,000USD).

Apple’s Classic Headquarters Signs up for Bidding: Rotten Fruits

Were you about to buy Oculus Rift when Facebook snatched it? Fuming that Google’s going to get Twitch before you do? Why not aim for some low-hanging fruit? This June, Bonhams will be auctioning off two of Apple’s old headquarters signs. The rainbow-striped signs were displayed outside Apple’s buildings, probably from around the late 70s – when Rob Janoff designed the logo – until 1997, when Apple began favoring the minimalist style that still pervades today.

The larger sign measures 46 x 49 x 1 inches and is made of stiff foam, while the smaller sign measures 33.5 x 36 x 6 inches and is made of fiberglass with metal backing. Both signs are a bit worn out, but will surely become more valuable with time. Unless Apple implodes and is promptly forgotten. Hmmm. Bonhams expects the pair will sell for $10,000 to $15,000 (USD), but maybe you should steal the Android sculptures on Google’s lawn instead. Just to stay ahead of the curve.

DOOM Pewter Miniatures Should Sell Like Hotcakes

etc-doom-pewterminis-detail

Doom is one of those classic franchises that people just don’t seem to get enough of. So we’re not surprised to hear there’s a lot of demand for this set of 15 characters from the game, each one made out of pewter. You have all the usual suspects, like cyberdemon, Arch-vile, Hell Knight, cacodemon and more. The set comes in a plastic 10″ x 8″ x 3″ carrying case with an updated stamp on the bottom. We say updated because this happens to be the same set that was sold originally by Reaper Miniatures in the late 90′s, with each figurine made from the same molds. Unlike back then, you can now buy all 15 at once.

The kit is being sold by Bethesda, who bought idSoftware a while ago. They’re asking $200 for it, but you’re going to have to wait a bit until they’re back in stock.

Ricky Bobby’s Wonder Bread Tracksuit up for Auction: If You Don’t Bid the Most, You’re Last

Thank you Lord baby Jesus… (and god bless the pygmies.) Ricky Bobby’s tracksuit from the movie Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby is up for auction via a movie memorabilia company called ScreenUsed. The suit is an actual Sparco racing suit worn by professional racers, or in this case, Will Ferrell, when he played NASCAR racer Ricky Bobby.

It includes the Puma shoes Ferrell wore in the film as well as the Wonder Bread hat. If a racing suits isn’t your thing, this company is also putting up a ton of other awesome and geeky movie props and memorabilia in an auction to be held on November 3, 2012, which also includes some fun screen-used Star Trek and Star Wars items.

Other items up for auction include Neo’s coat from The Matrix Revolutions, Jayne Cobb’s Vera machine gun from Firefly, and even the Superman bodysuit Christopher Reeve wore in Superman III. You can even pick the gold jumpsuit with cape that Mike Myers wore in Goldmember – complete with padded crotch. There is a lot of other stuff in the auction too. I can’t decide if I want Ricky Bobby’s diving suit or the endoskeleton chest from Terminator 2: Judgment Day the most.

Ricky Bobby’s outfit is expected to fetch between $4,000 and $6,000 (USD).
