Engineer Builds Hands-Free Oreo and Milk Dispensers

Are you hungry for some milk and cookies? You could trudge all the way to the kitchen cabinet and grab some Oreos, then open the fridge to grab a bottle of milk, but that would be way too much work. Why can’t we just walk up to the wall and be fed milk and cookies without any effort at all? Well, now we can, thanks to the work of Emiel, aka The Practical Engineer.

In the interest of progress, Emiel built himself a pair of wall-mounted dispensers which can feed him Oreos and milk without the need for hands. He simply walks up to each lever, pushes down with his neck, and out pops a snack from one machine, and a stream of milk from the other. The cookie dispenser is powered by a spring, while the milk dispenser actually has a pump built into it.

He built the dispensers using a combination of off-the-shelf and 3D printed parts, and you can build your own with the instructions and template files he’s selling on his website for just €5.95 (or about $6.50 USD). While I can get behind the Oreo dispenser, I’m afraid that milk dispenser would be pretty impractical to keep clean – and without refrigeration, the milk won’t last long.

Royal College of Art student designs compostable clay vases… out of waste milk

It’s difficult to believe that something like milk could turn into a material that’s as moldable as clay, and as strong as concrete when dried. Tessa Silva-Dawson, a student at the Royal College of Art, developed a way to turn waste milk into a compostable clay-like material by combining it with chalk. Titled Chalk Cheese, the material uses excess skimmed milk created in the production of butter or cream. Rather than throwing this milk away, she mixed it with chalk sourced from a quarry in Hampshire to create a moldable material with the consistency of polymer clay. The series of vases designed using this material are molded from deadstock fabric to give it its unique aesthetic, but Tessa claims the material can easily be molded by hand too, to make other homeware.

Chalk Cheese is a modern reinterpretation of a material previously used in 16th century Britain, where sour, spoilt milk was mixed with limestone to create tough flooring that became as hard as stone after drying. Silva-Dawson’s material possesses more structural integrity, allowing it to be molded by hand or even spun on a potter’s wheel… and unlike fired-terracotta which doesn’t biodegrade, Chalk Cheese can easily be composted or turned into fertilizer after the product serves its purpose!

Willow’s CES booth will double as a safe space for breast-pumping moms

CES is just around the corner and that means two things: the opportunity to get up close and personal with exciting new tech, and horrifyingly long lines for the men's bathroom. It's no secret that tech is still a very male-dominated industry, and to...

This genius double-walled cup lets you eat your cereals on-the-go!

The Crunch Cup is just the kind of invention I’d expect from a mad scientist who wanted to have a wholesome breakfast while rushing to work. For years we’ve been able to carry coffee, tea, juices, and milkshakes around with us in flasks, but having cereal on the go has always been that elusive concept that nobody bothered to crack… until now.

That’s where the Crunch Cup is trying to change the game. The first cup that’s designed to have cereals while on the move, the Crunch Cup comes with a double-wall construction and a double-mouthed lid to match. Made of an inner and outer container, the Crunch Cup holds both parts of the milk-and-cereal combo separately, keeping them away from each other so you’re not left with a soggy mess. The inner container holds the cereal of your choice, while the outer container is for the milk of your choice. A two-piece, double-mouthed lid sits on top, allowing you to take a sip of your milk and a crunch of your cereal at the same time. The cereal remains crunchy because it isn’t soaked in the milk until it reaches inside your mouth, and the lid itself can be closed so that you can take your breakfast with you on the go, taking a sip/crunch every 5-10 minutes whenever you feel like. Can be used with milk and mini-Oreos too!

Designers: Rob Lambert & Kevin Meyer.

ICYMI: The USDA created milk-based cling wrap

This Milk Packaging Is All about Alien Cow Abduction

The only thing that aliens like more than capturing and probing humans is capturing and mutilating cows. Sick space scum! To celebrate cow abduction, I-Media, a creative agency in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan, has created a clever concept campaign for Molocow milk. This could be the official milk of The X-Files.

The campaign brilliantly captures the famous alien cow abduction phenomenon in a sleek, fun and modern design. Sadly it is just a concept. I would totally buy milk that was packaged like this. Plus, you get a free UFO toy with every bottle!

It’s designed to appeal to kids, but the idea of aliens abducting Earth-based life forms is pretty scary. This is some udder-ly awesome packaging if you ask me.
