Secret Mortal Kombat Arcade Menus Discovered 20+ Years Later: Finish HIM!

Mortal Kombat was one of the most popular games in the arcade back in the day. It seemed like every time I went I ended up standing in line to play. I can also remember entering lots of cheat codes on the Super Nintendo version, I still remember one cheat code as up, down, left, right, left, right, A,B, B, A – but I forget what game it was for. I never thought of arcade games having similar cheat codes.

Over 20 years after their heyday, a secret menu created by game developer Ed Boon has been discovered in Mortal Kombat 1, 2, 3, and Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3 that gives access to different things depending on what arcade game you enter it on.

The sequence to get to the menu is as follows:

P1 Block (x times) then P2 Block (x times) then P1 Block (x times) etc…

MK1…
P1 (5), P2 (10), P1 (2), P2 (1), P1 (2), P2 (3), P1 (4)

MK2…
P1 (5), P2 (10), P1 (2), P2 (8), P1 (2)

MK3/UMK3…
P1 (5), P2 (10), P1 (3), P2 (1), P1 (2), P2 (2), P1 (3), P2 (4)

In MK1 and MK2, it gets you to what seems to be maintenance menus for coins and game issues, as well as to view the character endings. In MK3, you can use the sequence to launch a Galaga style mini game and a playable character called Smoke. Ultimate MK3 is the best with the ability to open a supreme demonstration of Fatalities, Animalities, Babalities, and Friendshipalities.

Super Mario vs. Mortal Kombat: Finish Them

Video games are a bit like comic books in the sense that at some point most gamers have sat around talking about who would win if a fight broke out between characters from this game and that game. One video game beat down I have never thought about is Super Mario World vs. Mortal Kombat.

That is a mash-up that seems very biased towards the Mortal Kombat killers. After all, MK fighters get those awesome fatalities. There is nothing quite like seeing cute Mario characters dispatched violently by Scorpion and Shang Tsung.

Everything seems to be going along normally until morphing character Shang Tsung pops up and starts to dominate and decimate the Mushroom Kingdom. Check out the videos to see all the mashup action in full effect.
