Facebook is using AR to bring a massive mural to life

With all the controversy surrounding Facebook right now, it's easy to forget that the company actually does plenty of good for people across the world. At SXSW 2019, Facebook's Art House hopes to show that with a 2,200 square foot mural, which will b...

Turn Your Favorite Photo into a LEGO Masterpiece

Let’s say you have a photo and you want to turn it into a LEGO mosaic. Figuring out freehand what pieces to buy, how many and in exactly the places to put them would basically be impossible. Well, the new Legoizer does that work for you, allowing you to take a special image and turn it into an extra special work of art.

The best part – it’s crazy simple. It literally takes about three seconds. You take any photo, drag it from your desktop into the image slot, and presto, a rendering of the image in LEGO materialized along with an exact shopping list of the kind, color and number of specific pieces you would need to build it.

On a tab next to the shopping list is one for instructions. When you click on it it tells you may many lines are in your creation and asks you which line you want the specifics on. If you simply start with line 1 and hit enter, it shows you just how to arrange the pieces. It may be one of the easiest and most helpful interfaces I have ever seen for DIY art projects.

Even if you have no interest in ever building a photo you love out of LEGO pieces, you should still check it out and give it a test run to see one of the simplest and most elegant online tools of its kind.

Manifestation Station: Utility Box Turned Preview to Utopia

Utility boxes are often an eyesore. They just sit there, at the sidewalks, taking up space and being a huge eyesore, especially if some rowdy teenagers decide to turn them into a canvas for their graffiti.

That said, I really love what artist Mona Caron did with this particular one.

She didn’t just paint a pretty mural on it. She painted a mural that gives the viewer a peek into a beautiful alternative world when viewed at the proper angle. The piece is called Manifestation Station and is found in San Francisco at the corner of Church St. and Duboce Ave.

Look closely and you might just spot another mural Caron that created called the Duboce Bikeway Mural in the background.

Jim Lee Will Paint Your Wall for $25K: Do They Sell Bags and Boards for Walls?

Jim Lee is one of the most famous comic book artist and writers of my generation. From his breakout work with the X-Men books, co-founding Image Comics and now working at DC Comics, Lee is also certainly one of the most important figures in the comic book industry. And for $25,000 (USD), this highly talented big shot will go to your house and paint your wall. Or whichever wall you want.

jim lee dc comics we can be heroes fundraiser

Lee won’t see a penny of your money though. He’s offering it as a reward for DC Entertainment’s Indiegogo fundraiser, We Can Be Heroes. To celebrate Superman’s 75th anniversary, DC is raising funds to help alleviate hunger in the Horn of Africa. They are offering various rewards, from digital copies of Superman comics to paperbacks signed by their respective writers or artists. There’s even a Superman-themed bedroom set. The biggest reward of course, is the aforementioned Jim Lee mural. That’s like hiring Mark Zuckerberg to write your Computer Science project. Or me to sleep on your bed.

So auction off your old comics and head to Indiegogo to donate. The proceeds will be split between the International Rescue Committee, Mercy Corps and Save the Children. As of this writing the fundraiser has raised about $55,000 with only 13 days left. That Jim Lee pledge will go a long way towards fulfilling their goal.

Most of us just think of No. 2 pencils as what is used to complete math tests, but one woman took the pencil to a whole new level, creating a massive art project that won her top prize.

Gamer Bathroom is Flush with Pixel Art

Most bathrooms are pretty boring, sterile places, designed for the utility of brushing your teeth, washing your face, taking a bath, and using the toilet. But that doesn’t mean that a bathroom can’t be a fun place too – like this awesome video game themed bathroom from Technabob reader Gregory Pinzone.

video game bathroom 1

Gregory’s bathroom is loaded with retro video game touches, with artwork from Super Mario Bros., Donkey Kong and Pac-Man adorning the walls and fixtures. I especially love the Mario brick and question mark block lighting fixture above that intricately-detailed retro gaming mirror. Even the toilet seat cover has gotten the retro gaming treatment. I wonder if the Pac-Man trash can is filled with power pills, or just wadded up Kleenex. I also want to know where he got that Mario hand towel from. Check out some more detailed pics in the gallery below:
