Reminisce Your Childhood Crafting Memories With This Night Lamp

Childhood memories often have the power to transport us back to a simpler, more innocent time, when life was full of wonder and curiosity. One particular memory that many of us share is the joy of crafting paper cones, transforming a simple sheet into a fascinating geometric form. The Handmaid Table Lamp or Night Light captures the essence of this cherished childhood pastime and transforms it into a practical and aesthetically pleasing household item.

Designer: Sergey Buldygin

gif 1

At first glance, this lamp conjures up images of those paper cones we used to craft as children. With two cones curled up at different angles and gracefully stacked, the lamp takes on a unique form that reminds us of a Japanese monk. This resemblance adds a layer of cultural and artistic significance to this otherwise simple yet striking design.

The Handmaid Table Lamp is not just an eye-catching decor piece; it’s also a fun DIY project waiting to happen. Its assembly is a breeze, taking just a few seconds to complete. The clever clip-on mechanism makes folding and assembling the lamp a straightforward task. This ingenious design encourages users to engage with the product on a more personal level, fostering a sense of connection and ownership.

What sets this lamp apart is the cleverly designed “hat of the monk,” which serves as the lampshade. This unique feature allows for precision lighting as the angle of the “hat” is perfect for casting light over a larger surface area. Whether you’re working on a task or need a cozy ambiance in the room, the Handmaid Table Lamp can adapt to your lighting needs with ease.

The choice of translucent materials for the lampshade is a thoughtful design element. This quality not only allows the lamp to function as a task light but also transforms it into an ambient light source. When illuminated, the soft glow it emits creates a warm and inviting atmosphere, perfect for relaxing or setting the mood in any room.

The Handmaid Table Lamp’s minimalistic design makes it a versatile addition to any room in your home. However, its charming and playful appearance makes it particularly well-suited for children’s rooms. Placed on study tables or bedside tables, it can act as a source of inspiration for young minds. Its unique design encourages creativity and imagination, reminding children of the simple joys of crafting and play.

In conclusion, the Handmaid Table Lamp is more than just a source of illumination; it’s a delightful blend of childhood nostalgia, artful design, and practicality. Its ease of assembly and versatile functionality make it an ideal addition to your home, while its clever design evokes memories of crafting paper cones in your younger days. This lamp is a testament to the idea that everyday objects can bring a touch of whimsy and wonder into our lives, making our homes more inviting and our memories all the more precious.

This wooden and polycarbonate shed in New Zealand glows in the dark

Architecture studio Fabric designed a shed in Akaroa, New Zealand. Called, the Nightlight, the shed is wrapped with sleek timber slats that are inspired by the surrounding treeline. The 10 square meter shed is nestled in a clearing and is surrounded by kãnuka trees. The interesting feature of the shed is that it transforms into a light sculpture at night!

Designer: Fabric

The compact shed is part of a plan to transform the whole site into a home. The shed was designed to store items for the house which would be built in the future, while also serving as a glowing structure that can be viewed from the outdoor lounge spaces. The shed features a mono-pitched form which is translucent in nature and is made from polycarbonate. The shed has been elevated from the sloping ground with the help of concrete piles.

“Rather than locating this building out of sight like a typical shed or using it only for its services, Nightlight has been reimagined as a light sculpture that will proudly be seen from the future outdoor living space. The filtered light seen glowing between the slats at night is a contrasting aesthetic to the minimalist facade seen throughout the day,” said Fabric.

When illuminated from within, the light from the interiors of the shed radiates through the empty space in between the sleek timber slats, which subtly surrounds the exterior of the structure. The shed has a rather minimal footprint, and it was designed to be used as a workspace, outdoor kitchen, small bathroom, and storage area. The structure has been outfitted with both a toilet and a workbench. An external shower and sink have been added as well. The sleek timber slats were slathered with laminated veneer lumber (LVL) to make them stiff and sturdy, this ensured that fewer number of slats were required for the construction of the shed.

“All battens and slats were carefully lined up with the internal structure and used sparingly to allow a uniform pattern of glow at night. This critical geometry and alignment was a constant challenge throughout the build,” concluded Fabric. The timber planks were silvered in an attempt to resemble the surrounding kãnuka trees. The locally sourced macrocarpa wood used to build the external decking was silvered as well. Subtle muted green accents were added to the structure to help it further blend in with its surroundings.

This smart nightlight helps you remotely take care of your loved ones… without any cameras

CareAlert is a brilliant example of a design that’s extremely aware of its target audience. This night-light helps you monitor and take care of the elderly, but it does so in a way that doesn’t require the elderly to be tech-literate, and it doesn’t use cameras either. The CareAlert and its wide host of sensors help you be aware of the wellbeing of your elderly loved ones. The sensors do a multitude of things, from tracking temperature, air quality, and humidity, to sensing motion, light, and vibrations. Without using cameras or microphones, invading privacy, or capturing any actionable data, the CareAlert gives you a comprehensive overview of your elderly relatives through its smartphone app. Helping you understand if they slept alright, woke up on time, or if and when they went outdoors to run basic errands. Disguised as a simple night-light that plugs into a power socket, the CareAlert is an incredibly well-designed solution that’s relevant to its audience, and respects their privacy too.

Installing CareAlert is as simple as just plugging it into a power socket and setting up the CareAlert Dashboard on your smartphone. If your folks live in a larger home, you may want to plug one into the important rooms of the house, covering a wider area. Once plugged in, CareAlert helps you be there for your folks and monitor/take-care of them without being overly intrusive. Giving them the independence to go about their lives, while allowing you to stay informed of their health and their space, CareAlert does a much more effective job than webcams, smart speakers, or other smart home devices that essentially spy on people by capturing sensitive data. Unlike other smart home devices, CareAlert comes with a one-time cost and a free lifetime monitoring service, requiring zero subscription fees or periodic payments.

CareAlert essentially only monitors two things – movement, and surroundings. Given that elder-folk often live their life in a routine, the CareAlert picks up on it, letting you know if they woke up at an odd hour in the middle of the night, or if they overslept. The motion sensors track movement, giving you an overview of their activity, while other sensors help you monitor their immediate environment, knowing if there’s a change in air quality, temperature, humidity, etc. Install a CareAlert near the door and you’ll even know when they step out and when they got back home. Built into the CareAlert device is a two-way intercom too. You can call your parents/relatives through the CareAlert app and the night-light essentially becomes a speakerphone, allowing you to communicate with them if you can’t get through to them any other way. Moreover, you can even set up voice-message reminders for them, playing back a pre-recorded message to remind them to take their pills after lunch or dinner, or to call you before going to bed. The CareAlert isn’t intrusive, but it fosters communication when necessary, allowing you to remotely stay informed and in touch.

The beauty of the CareAlert lies in the fact that it recognizes its audience well. Designed as an innocuous (and helpful) night-light, the CareAlert doesn’t require the elderly to wear a wearable and constantly have to charge it, or require them to interact with interfaces that can often seem daunting to them. It does its job silently, needs no maintenance, all while also protecting their privacy and celebrating their independence!

This Yoshi Egg Nightlight Is an Eggcellent Nintendo Collectible

Fans of Super Mario, or more specifically games with Yoshi in them, are going to love this nightlight. It’s very exciting. No yolk. This official piece of Nintendo merchandise is USB powered, so just plug it in and enjoy the light that it emits. This lifesize replica provides the perfect ambiance for a long night of playing your favorite Nintendo games.

It’s been a while since I played a Yoshi game, but from what I remember these dinosaurs lay eggs all the damn time. The Yoshi population must be crazy out of control in the Mushroom Kingdom. Too many eggs. No way these dinosaurs are going extinct. Their eggs don’t light up your room in the game, but this one does. There’s nothing like the warm glow of egg to really set the mood.

It’s a pretty cool nightlight, but I would be more impressed if it actually hatched a Yoshi while it was lighting up the night. Now excuse me while I sit on mine and try to hatch my very own dinosaur that I can ride.

You’ll have to shell out $33(USD) for this officially licensed USB powered Yoshi Egg Light. it is available right now for pre-order from Firebox.

Meet Doolight, the Modular, Smart Chandelier of 2018

I’ve always maintained that the best way for a designer to validate a personal project is to crowdfund it. Crowdfunding is literally an exercise that helps you take your product from a base concept to a fully manufactured and functional product. Walking down that road itself can help a designer gain a lot of insights and experiences, and having people pledge to buy your product is probably the best way to test the water to see what consumers think, and most importantly, want. Created back in 2008, the Drop Light was an ingeniously designed chandelier concept that comprised multiple hanging lights that could be detached and carried around. Thanks to advents in contact charging, wireless charging, and LED technology, Baek can take the Drop Light from a concept to a product that design enthusiasts can own. Newly christened the Doolight, the design features a few updates and visual tweaks to make it look great and perform seamlessly well.

The Doolight comes with its own set of improvements, from a redesigned chandelier base to a separate reading-light attachment. The individual lamp units come with a sturdy, waterproof construction that can be used outdoors or even in the shower without abandon. The LEDs are surrounded by a soft silicone sphere that absorbs impact and diffuses the light perfectly. With a flat base, these individual ‘drops’ can be kept flat on any surface on their own, using them as an ambient light, or a night light, or even a nursery light. The lights can be controlled using a switch on the base, or even via an app, allowing you to power on/off and even control the brightness of individual lamps. The lights now even recognize voice commands, allowing you to control them via Alexa (a feature that clearly wouldn’t be possible a decade ago). The lights hang upside down on a flower-shaped mount just like wine-glasses do, and charge using wireless charging technology. Running on batteries, the lights can work for three days on a full charge, allowing you to use them anywhere around the house and returning them to the chandelier mount only when you need to charge them, or when you’ve got friends coming over and you want to impress them with this amazing Alexa-powered chandelier in your house that has detachable light modules!

BedLight Is a Motion Activated LED Light for Your Bed

You know how it is: it’s late at night and you have to get up to pee, but you don’t want to wake up your partner by turning the room light on, so you blindly stumble across the room and trip, making a ton of noise and you wake them up anyway. You need the BedLight.

bed_light_1zoom in

The BedLight is two 5ft strips of LEDs that you place under your bed, producing a warm, indirect light. They turn on as soon as they detect movement, and turn off after 30 seconds to 10 minutes with the adjustable timer. You get all of the mounting accessories, including clips to hide the cables, and can ship with either one or two sensors, depending on how many sides of your bed you need to light up.

While there are plenty of LED lights to illuminate your toilet now, this looks like a great solution to keep you from stubbing your toe or running into a wall while you get up to do your thing.

Prices for the BedLight start at $55(USD).
