Man Replaces Mazda Miata’s Steering Wheel with Nintendo Wii Wheel Controller

Presumably, to prove that Mario Kart can be used as a realistic driving simulator when coupled with the Nintendo Wii Wheel, TikTok user Tyler Atkin created the ‘Wiiata,’ a Mazda Miata with its steering wheel replaced with the Wii peripheral. He also switched out the car’s gearshift for one of the system’s nunchuck controllers – a nice touch.

Now, if only the Miata just turtle shells its transformation into a real Mario Kart would be complete. Don’t you even think about blasting me with a blue shell. Honestly, there should be an option in the game where you can toggle blue shells on and off, but it appears Nintendo refuses to acknowledge all my angry emails.

Of course, it’s all fun and games until your steering wheel snaps during a U-turn, and you lose all your steering capabilities. Those plastic steering wheels aren’t exactly the most durable controllers made, you know. I’ve noticed they break especially easy, slamming them into the coffee table after getting beat by your roommate on Rainbow Road for the second time in a row.

Someone squeezed a Nintendo Wii into a Game Boy Color-like case

The Wii has a ton of great games that Nintendo hasn’t ported to the Switch, and it probably won’t do so in most cases. But there are ways you might be able to play Super Mario Galaxy on the go real soon instead of waiting for the rumored Switch versi...

Sony’s PS4 is the second best-selling console of all time

Sony's PlayStation 4 has become the second best-selling console of all time, surpassing the original PlayStation, which sold 102.5 million units. Sony said that it sold 2.8 million PS4s this quarter (including the PS4 Pro), on top of the 100 million...

WiiVision Is the Nintendo Wii Handheld of Our Dreams

The Nintendo GameCube and Wii both offered up lots of fun and classic video games. But neither console was particularly portable, so the only way you could play those games on the go would be via software emulation. But games rarely play to perfection or at full speed through emulation, and the right way to do it is with original hardware if possible.

Shank Mods and GmanModz teamed up to make a truly impressive handheld gaming system using the brains of an actual Nintendo Wii. This allows the system to play any Wii or GameCube game, and at full speed. It also can play Virtual Console, WiiWare and homebrew apps. The design of the WiiVision was inspired by a 2011 GameCube portable build by Tchay.

To fit all the components inside the case, they had to carefully trim the main circuit board from the Wii, and wired it up to an LCD screen, speakers, and control buttons. And with the help of 3D printing and custom circuit boards, they were able to make it super neat and tidy inside. Games are loaded onto the system via a tiny USB flash drive, and it’s capable of supporting external controllers.

Shank had previously built another nifty Wii/GameCube portable called the PiiWii Pocket, but it ultimately melted its case because it accidentally turned on inside a carrying case. Not one to give up on his dream portable, he went back to the drawing board, and teamed up with his friend to build a whole new system. I like the styling of this handheld even more, as it looks even more like something Nintendo might have made themselves.

Amazing work, Shank and Gman!

Nintendo Wii U Update Introduces “Quick Start” Menu

Wii U Quick Start Menu image

The newest system update for the Wii U gets players into the game as fast as ever.

Speed, much like emphasis of Mario Kart 8, is the main thrust behind the latest system update for the Nintendo Wii U. Update version 5.00 features the rather convenient “quick start” menu that allows users to get right into their favorite games, minus the waiting time that comes with booting-up the Wii U’s operating system.

The “quick start” menu also keeps track of what recent games/apps you’ve used so that the whole process really shaves off the time between you and, say, getting back into Mario Kart 8 to work on shaving off your race track time (I know, I know, too much Mario Kart on the brain). Take a look at the quick start menu in action.

As a generation that’s accustomed to the instant-touch lifestyle that comes with our modern electronics, your iPads and such, this is a smart move on Nintendo behalf.

Of course, that’s not all Update 5.00 brings with it: automatic downloading and installing of future system updates, a new kind of notification system on the Wii U GamePad controller that alerts patrons of status updates even when the main console is turned off, and most importantly of all, those awesome system stability tweaks.

The latest Wii U update is available now, as is Mario Kart 8. But I’m sure you already know that through my heavy, probably unbearable name dropping of it (it’s well deserved though!).

End of Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection service for Wii and DS means no more online gaming

I would wager there are a bunch of gamers out there that still play online with their Wii and DS consoles. If you are one of those gamers, your days of playing Mario Kart or Pokémon online are...

What about the Wii U?

Everyone's in a tizzy about the "new" console generation, conveniently forgetting that, market-wise, it was already here a year ago with the release of Nintendo's Wii U. It isn't as advanced technologically as the new Sony's PlayStation and Microsoft's Xbox One, but the Wii U's like the kid who still likes Ninja Turtles when everyone's moved on to Power Rangers: They might not be as cool, but they're still your classmate, and they're still going to graduate with everyone else. Nintendo might seem a little square compared to Sony and Microsoft right now, but it still has the skills to succeed in school.

At launch, Nintendo sold out its entire initial allotment of 400,000 Wii U's -- which looked promising -- but after the holidays, sales softened significantly and continued to slide. By E3, the situation wasn't looking so good. Just a few months later, Nintendo announced a price cut of $50 for the console, reducing its profit on each unit sold. However, the price reduction also moved a lot of units, with the Wii U experiencing a 200 percent uptick in sales for the month of September.
