This ultra-minimalist pen stand makes your writing partner the center of attention

We all have our favorite writing instruments, be it an heirloom fountain pen or even a number 2 pencil. You’ll probably just stuff the latter in drawers or leave them strewn on your desk, but the pen that has been with you for years is something you’ll probably want to show off while keeping it within easy reach. Pen stands exist for that exact purpose, but some of them try to compete with the pen for attention. They have extravagant and luxurious designs that defeat the intention of putting your favorite pen on a pedestal. That’s the trap that this tiny pen stand tries to avoid by practically removing all non-essential features that prevent you from showing off your trusty writing partner.

What stand could be simpler than an upright cylinder with a whole in the middle that’s just enough to fit a single pen? After all, a pen stand’s purpose is to hold the writing tool for easy access while showing it off when not in use. Anything else is just excess and waste that burdens the product both visually and functionally. That’s the kind of minimalist design that this small and simple stand embraces, but that doesn’t mean it’s a plain and boring desk accessory. In fact, it is ironically one of the most beautiful pen stands around, especially if you favor minimalist designs.

Your eyes will be immediately drawn to the stand’s diminutive size. At only 52.5mm (around 2 inches) tall, it has just enough space to hold a small portion of the pen, leaving the majority of the barrel unobstructed and free for everyone to behold. Despite its small size, however, the stand is able to, well, stand without tipping over due to the weight of the pen. In fact, the stand itself tilts a little bit to one side, an intentional design that makes it easier to pull out the pen quickly when you need to jot something down.

The trick to the Centroid Stand’s unbelievable feat is in its construction, which also accounts for its two-tone color finish. The top half of the stand is made from polished aluminum which gives it a stylish luster, while the lower half is made from heavier copper that shifts the center of gravity lower, making it more stable regardless of its tilt or the weight of the pen that it holds. These two dissimilar materials, joined together using a friction welding process, give the stand a rather distinct flavor, one that is both playful and elegant at the same time. Copper also develops a unique patina over time, adding to the stand’s character as it grows old with you.

Showcase your Everlasting All-Metal Pencil with the ultimate stand.

Beautiful in its simplicity and ingenious in its functionality, this ultra-minimalist pen stand offers a perfect view of the writing instrument that it holds. Due to its minimalist design, it is the perfect complement to equally minimalist pen designs, such as the Everlasting All-Metal Pencil that will last as long as this unconventional stand. It is a glowing example of how simple designs, when done right, can exude a kind of beauty that gently draws your eyes without distracting from the attention that your favorite pen or pencil rightfully deserves.

Plant-inspired desk accessories bring a sense of calm to your work life

There are plenty of tips and pieces of advice on how to decrease stress levels at work, particularly on your desk. Keep your workspace clean and tidy, put objects and pictures that inspire, and add green plants that remind you to take breaks and live. The latter, however, isn’t always possible in all environments, and some might not be too keen on the added responsibility of keeping that plant alive, even if it’s a succulent. That’s not to say you have to give up the benefits of having some green on your desk, especially not with this collection of accessory concept designs that try to bring life to your work by taking inspiration from Nature’s miracle workers.

Designers: Gahnghyun Yi, Jiwon Lee, Chaeyeon Ha

Plants have long been a source of inspiration for creators of all disciplines, including scientists, engineers, architects, and, of course, designers. The natural beauty these silent creatures possess is surprisingly not that easy to recreate, but we can easily distill the essence of their forms and translate them into designs that hold meaning in our lives. These desk accessories, for example, try to nudge your mind to think about real greenery, eliciting the same emotions of peacefulness, calm, and relaxation that a plant would bring if it were actually standing on your desk.

It’s not a literal imitation, of course; just an interpretation of the basic forms and shapes that plants possess. The Greenery Pencil Holder, for example, is a cylinder with a curved plate partially wrapped around it at an angle, almost like a bamboo stem with a leaf growing out of it. This “leaf” actually functions as a container as well, creating two spaces to place your pens, pencils, and other long stationery tools.

The Greenery Clock is a bit more abstract in comparison, with a stem that curves upward and a leaf that droops down from the top, forming a minimalist digital clock. There is actually a second leaf that’s less visible since it’s lying flat on the desk, creating a space to put small items on. The latter design is repeated in the Greenery Tray with two horizontal “leaves” providing the same flat container. What makes it different, other than the lack of a clock, are the elongated “stems” that act as a hook for hanging key rings and other items.

The Greenery Cable Holder is admittedly a bit of a stretch to imagine as leaves growing on a leaf vein. After all, it’s just a set of circles with cutouts for inserting a cable. One side of the circle is flat, allowing the cable holder to be stuck on desks or walls. With this set, you can add some green hues to your desk without sacrificing space, deriving both utility and aesthetic from simple designs, thanks to some inspiration from Mother Nature.

Grovemade X Blackwing Pencil Kit keeps pens sharp and clean

The adage “The pen is mightier than the sword” has been true throughout the centuries. It Is no different in this new millennium as the written word has more power than violence when communicating a message.

The “pen” may be in a different form these days as it can now refer to the keyboard in the digital world, but some writers maintain their love for the basic writing instrument. Even in this day and age, we still need pens around the house or in the office. Pens will never go out of circulation but it may be fun to be more creative and have fun with pen design.

Designers: Grovemade and Blackwing

Grovemade X Blackwing Pencil Kit 2

That’s what Grovemade and Blackwing have done with the Grovemade X Blackwing Pencil Kit. This innovative kit can keep pens always sharp for use. The two companies worked together on this unique collaboration to develop beautiful tools for work.

You can say pencils on their own are already minimalist, but they can still be more efficient. These pens already come with their own tip-protection and a sharpening system. The pencils also come with a unique stand that keeps the objects vertical.

The Grovemade and Blackwing Pencil Kit’s aesthetics are pleasing, providing something easy on the eyes. So if you see something nice and calming on your desk, you may be inspired to work, and that’s what the pencil kit can do. A kit consists of 12 custom pencils, a Walnut stand, and one sharpener. Unfortunately, you can’t buy the items separately as they come as part of a kit. The Grovemade X Blackwing Pencil Kit costs $120.

Grovemade X Blackwing Pencil Kit Details

Blackwing is a brand known for its iconic pencils. The quality pencils are made from Japanese graphite and incense cedar. Grovemade is a shop that helps makers and business owners create and sell their crafts. The two teamed up to work on a new pencil kit that won’t remain a decor or unused stuff. Instead, creatives will love the pencil kit for its clean and composed style.

The pencil stand puts pens within reach on your desk. It is a storage for your pencils, but on its own, it appears like an art sculpture that can be a conversation starter. To keep pens sharp always is the Blackwing sharpener. It is made of machined aluminum and a custom German steel blade. The sharpener results in a long and durable curved point.

BondArtStudio’s pencil-holder turns your color-pencils into an organized rainbow of hues

[The designers of this product are of Ukrainian origin. YD is sharing work from Ukrainian designers/students in the hopes of amplifying their talent and giving them a global platform.]

With its arc-shaped design, the BondArtStudio’s color-pencil holder puts the literal ‘bow’ in rainbow!

Crafted out of beech wood, the holder comes in a variety of sizes, storing anywhere between 24 to 72 pencils. A small area in the middle acts as a container for other stationery like brushes, erasers, sharpeners, etc. while the most attractive element of the holder remains its ‘perforated arc’ that lets you spread out your color pencils in an eye-catching spectrum of hues.

[Follow BondArtStudio on Instagram]

Designer: BondArtStudio

By vertically holding all your color pencils in a single file, the holder occupies lesser space while allowing you to individually access each color without digging around in your color pencil drawer or pencil-stand. The horizontal holder sits easily on any desk, with a base-heavy design that prevents it from tipping over, and a vertical mounting system that prevents the color pencils from rolling around on your table.

Each holder is hand-made out of beechwood and finished with a coat of thung oil at BondArtStudio’s workshop in Kolomyya, Ukraine. Given current global affairs, BondArtStudio was forced to temporarily shut its studio, although their work and craftsmanship speaks volumes and deserves amplification and support.

This modular pencil reduces waste & extends the life of your stationery!

When pencils are used and become short, they are usually thrown away and contribute to waste. The eraser too goes to waste just because the pencil is shorter and uncomfortable to hold even though it is not entirely useless. So how can we make the most of the entire pencil and all its parts? Meet the Loop pencil – this clever design not only makes it easier to use the pencil till the end of its life but also uses the eraser to double up as a stand to keep your desk clutter-free!

More than 14 billion pencils are created every year, which is enough to circle the earth 62 times, and 82,000 trees are cut down every year to make those 14 billion traditional wooden pencils. While they are natural and almost 100% biodegradable, doesn’t mean we can get away with wasting them just due to their design while they are still good to use and that is where Loop comes in with its nifty tweaks to the existing pencil. If pencils were a pokemon that could evolve, Loop would be its final evolution!

Loop has three parts and each has an important function to optimize the product – the pencil, the clip and the eraser. Once the pencil becomes shorter, you use the clip which acts as an extended grip and it also doubles up as an attachment so you can clip it on your documents just like a pen. The eraser doubles up as a vertical pen stand so that the desk doesn’t have a cluster of pencils and you can easily find one that belongs to you. Loop’s simple yet modular design makes it effective, reduces waste, and maximizes the use of the product.

The idea was to extend the life of pencils and erasers but also make them more functional (and fun!). Loop believes that with one more rotation of using the pencil, you can decrease waste and make the most of existing stationery. Since pencils are made of wood and the raw materials come from forests, we should be mindful about using them fully and do our part in saving trees through small actions. You can freely combine different forms through the “one turn, one change” method and show more love to the environment as a stationery lover!

This intuitive wooden pen holder solves cleanup woes on messy art days and is designed to last a lifetime!

Painting gets messy, especially when you have kids. Without regard for the new floor carpet or optic white-stained china cabinet, the whole room is their canvas when kids paint. Then there’s the dreaded clean-up of all the scattered colored pencils and paintbrushes. Setting out to create a tidy solution for those memorable, but messy paint-filled afternoons, Architect Mum, a child care accessory design studio, developed the Creative Cube, a multifunctional pen holder that can last a lifetime.

Creative Cube was inspired by Architect Mum founder Caro’s own daughter. Caro describes, “After she had painted, it was a hassle for her to tidy up the pens, too…when she was painting with water, it also happened quite often that the water glass tipped over in the creative process. I knew we needed a pen holder that would solve our problems, but I didn’t want a plastic red ladybug in our home.” Averting the tempting lure of weird, anthropomorphic plastic home accessories, Caro gave Creative Cube a wooden construction to exude a minimalist warmth and a timeless, neutral design so the product can be carried down for generations. Eighteen pen slots and a single paintbrush holder fill out the sides of Creative Cube with an additional chamber to place paint water cups stationed on the top of Creative Cube.

Manufactured in southern Germany, Creative Cube is constructed from sycamore wood and coated in linoleum for added protection. Developed to be a lifetime product, Creative Cube is doubly covered with natural linseed oil to stand the test of time and remain resistant against any potential water damage. Since wood is a natural product, Caro suggests keeping your Creative Cube out of direct sunlight to avoid any yellowing or grain fluctuations.

Designer: Architect Mum

Nine pen slots fill out each side of Creative Cube, with additional chambers for a paintbrush and water cup.

Kids can clean up their workstations with ease following paint activities and water coloring.

With an intuitive design, kids can pull their favorite colored pens from Creative Cube and put them right back when they’re done.

With wide slots, Creative Cube can hold multiple slim pencils in one holder.

Turn your pencil stub into a gloriously fine writing instrument.

Meet the Ferrule, probably the most significant improvement to wooden pencils since they started putting erasers on the opposite end. The Ferrule is a brass pencil enclosure and extender. It upgrades the feeling of using a tiny, frail wooden pencil by enclosing it in a hexagonal brass body that gives you confident strokes, thanks to its weight, and a much more premium writing and drawing experience.

The Ferrule works with all standard pencils (7-8mm in width) up to 120mm in length. Designed to function as a high-end pencil sleeve, the Ferrule works with short pencil stubs too, giving you a consistent premium writing experience throughout. It opens and closes with a simple twisting action, allowing you to lock or release the pencil within with a satisfying click. The opposite end has a holder for erasers too, upgrading your entire writing experience by turning the humble wooden pencil into an incredibly luxurious and premium writing/sketching experience.

The body of the pencil holder comes intricately machined out of brass, with an innovative clutch mechanism that tightly grips the pencil. Designed by the fine folks at Makers Cabinet (who also created the Iris circle-master, and the Stria ruler), the Ferrule comes after months of design iterations focusing on finding that perfect balance between eye-catching form and exquisite function. The result is a brass instrument that transitions from a cylindrical profile to a hexagonal one, creating visual drama while also ensuring the pencil doesn’t roll around on your table. At 45 grams, it has just the right amount of weight to help you draw or write confidently. While being slim enough to fit right inside your stationery kit or even your backpack, the Ferrule is the kind of pencil-holder you’d want to show off, hence the presence of a pocket-clip that lets you keep your pencil close to your chest, letting you easily access it while also allowing you to carry it with pride, like the luxury EDC it is. Each Ferrule ships with 6 cedar pencils (3 HB and 3 2B) and 3 eraser-sticks that fix right on top. As an add-on, you can even grab the Ferrule Sheath, a cover-case made from Badalassi Carlo leather, a set of slick-grey notebooks courtesy of London-based stationery brand Mark + Fold. To complete the premium experience, however, I’d suggest pairing the Ferrule with Makers Cabinet’s HØVEL sharpener, a beautifully complementary brass sharpener inspired by traditional woodworking tools.
