A Paper Cat Tower To Keep Your Feline Friends Engaged And Embrace The Royalty They Deserve

Looking almost like a shipping container home for cats, this quaint little box-shaped shelter employs stiff paper boards that come together wonderfully to create robust yet lightweight boxes for your feline friends to rest in, paw at, and potentially even play around on top of. Using sustainable materials (that can then be composted after their time is over), the boxes stack up wonderfully, creating everything cats need, from multiple entry points to elevated vantage points, and even a hanging toy to keep those curious little critters entertained!

Designer: HyeongJin YoonByungJun Lee, and Maro S

At the heart of Cat Box’s construction lies the innovative use of honeycomb board, a sturdy material that blends a core and honeycomb structure between plywood layers. Compressed with finishing materials on both the front and back, honeycomb board is an environmentally friendly choice, aligning seamlessly with the contemporary trend of embracing recyclable and reusable paper-based materials. This not only ensures the well-being of our feline companions but also contributes to a sustainable and eco-conscious approach to pet product design.

Creating a haven for feline royalty necessitates a thoughtful consideration of space utilization. Cat Box excels in this aspect by ingeniously designing vertical spaces, such as walls or ceilings, to accommodate cat-friendly areas. Recognizing that for cats, elevated viewpoints in vertical spaces are of paramount importance, Cat Box stands as a testament to the understanding of feline behavior and needs.

The centerpiece of the feline kingdom, a cat tower, serves as both a cozy retreat and an engaging playground. Designed with a keen awareness of cats’ natural inclination for heights, the cat tower not only provides a lofty vantage point but also a snug haven for rest and play within the cat kingdom. This unique structure becomes an essential element, offering feline residents the perfect combination of comfort and activity.

Cat Box goes beyond the ordinary by incorporating playboards on its sides, catering to the whims and fancies of our discerning feline friends. These boards seamlessly alternate between nose workboards and scratchboards, ensuring that the kingdom administrators are always attuned to the preferences of their furry residents. This thoughtful addition enhances the overall experience, turning Cat Box into a multifaceted haven for our regal companions.

The hanging toy, strategically placed within Cat Box’s vertical spaces, captures the attention of our feline residents. With their curiosity piqued the cats approach this small and special toy with eager eyes, examining its various colored elements. This delightful feature adds an extra layer of stimulation, creating an interactive environment that keeps our feline friends entertained and engaged.

For the overseer of the feline kingdom, Cat Box offers a convenient cat carrier, allowing them to go outside with their regal pals. Inside the carrier, plush cushions await, meticulously prepared to cater to the discerning preferences of our royal felines. This thoughtful inclusion ensures that even the journey beyond the kingdom’s borders remains a comfortable and enjoyable experience for our cherished companions.

Cat Box is a harmonious blend of elegance, innovation, and functionality in the realm of feline products. Crafted with care and consideration, this paper cat tower offers a unique and enchanting experience for both cats and their devoted human companions, redefining the standards of feline luxury in a sustainable and eco-friendly manner.

GoChip Gets A Sustainable Design To Track Your Dog And Remain A Stress-Free Pet Parent

Isn’t it tiresome to constantly run around your furry friends and keep a tab on them? Well, say hello to GoChip – the ultimate digital passport for your pet that makes being a responsible pet parent a breeze! In cahoots with city governments, vets, and shelters, GoChip is rocking the digital pet ID game. Just attach a GoChip to your pet, and you’re all set to manage them right from your phone. It’s like your pet’s passport, always updated, always with you. Plus, it’s not just smart; it’s a style statement inspired by Japanese minimalism and the cool vibes of Bali and Goa. With GoChip, your pet is not just found; they’re Always Found.

Designer: ANCORD Design Co (for GoChip)

Pet owners are always stressing about their furballs. Traditional pet IDs like collars and tags are easily lost and often outdated. And don’t even get me started on the emotional rollercoaster of trying to track down a missing pet. Shockingly, over 10 million pets in the U.S. go missing every year, with a whopping 65% never making it back home. Nobody expects it to happen to them, but it does. However, even in this case this chip is installed on the collar and can lose its value if it comes out, but it is surely a better option than the traditional collar tags.

ANCORD Design’s mission was to change the pet safety game. They went from brainstorming to a product that’s both cool and functional. They delved deep into the competitive landscape, analyzing a myriad of tracking products, from pet-specific devices to general-purpose trackers. This comprehensive research allowed them to identify gaps and opportunities that GoChip could uniquely fill.

Sustainability and functionality were at the forefront of material exploration. The designers considered options ranging from silicone to ocean plastics, ensuring durability without compromising aesthetics—a crucial balance for a product meant to accompany pets on their everyday adventures. They drew inspiration from Japanese minimalism, natural elements, and exotic vibes and curated a mood board that served as their aesthetic North Star. This guided the product’s look and feel, ensuring a globally appealing design. They chose 3D printing as their mode of manufacturing for optimum use of materials.

The design development involved iterative refinements based on client feedback. This collaborative approach ensured that every design choice was intentional and aligned with GoChip’s overarching vision. The final tag consists of a tracker, and a QR code to access all the information.

This smart collar from Invoxia can also detect your pet’s abnormal heart rhythms

Nowadays, there are already plenty of choices when it comes to pet trackers, and some can even monitor heart rate, but apparently none could detect atrial fibrillation (AFib) until now. At CES 2024 in Las Vegas, GPS tracker specialist Invoxia unveiled the Minitailz, the world's first pet tracker that can keep an eye out for early heart disease symptoms on your cats or dogs. Together with other vital stats and activity log, the companion app then uses conversational generative AI to generate easy-to-read reports on your pets.

According to the French company, Minitailz is able to track respiratory and heart vitals with an accuracy of 97 to 99 percent, thanks to its advanced biometric sensors combined with AI. Using deep learning algorithms, the set of data is then used to spot digital biomarkers that indicate stress, aging and pathologies. The device can also differentiate the types of movements, such as walks, runs and zoomies, as well as alerting you when your pets wander beyond your preset geofences.

The Minitailz module houses a built-in SIM card for LTE-M connectivity, which enables real-time tracking in conjunction with GPS. This can be attached to any pet collar, which is an advantage over many competing devices that are stuck inside a physical neckband, according to Invoxia.

The Minitailz is already available for dogs via Invoxia's website for $99, followed by a cat version due in March for the same price. You'll also need to buy a subscription starting from $8.30 per month.

We're reporting live from CES 2024 in Las Vegas from January 6-12. Keep up with all the latest news from the show here.

AI-powered cat door stops your feline companion from bringing home dead gifts

Cats are notorious for many things, with curiosity at the top of that list. They can and will pounce on small critters, sometimes with undesirable consequences. If that wasn’t bad enough, cats that have owners have a tendency to bring home the spoils of war, whether for themselves or as a gift to their humans. Either way, those unwanted and unmoving critters are sure to create unhealthy and unsavory circumstances at home, often discovered only after the fact. At CES 2024, a rather curious solution is being presented, utilizing those hot AI powers to stop your cat from entering your abode until they finally let go of their lifeless package.

Designer: Flappie

Flappie wouldn’t be the first smart pet door to grace the market, but it is probably the first to be so laser-focused on a very specific use case. The fact that it needs to only pay attention to cats and a very specific scenario means its designers and developers can also pour resources only into things that matter. In this case, that means it’s only concerned about recognizing cats and whether they have prey in their mouths before entering your house.

Like other smart doors, Flappie has sensors, specifically a camera, facing the outside world. When your cat approaches, it uses AI to identify whether it’s bringing home prey or just some other inanimate object. If it indeed carrying some previously living thing, the smart door will won’t open up and prevent your cat from entering. Only when the cat has figured out that it can’t go in without dropping its payload first will the AI door finally let it have access and resume living in the safety and comfort of its indoor abode.

The idea for this kind of specialized security system is to hopefully train the cat to not bring in dead things (or other things) and drop them off at the door before coming in. It’s not a foolproof method, but one that the designers believe is more effective than manually monitoring the cat. They are confident that the AI has a 90% accuracy in identifying dead prey like mice, birds, and even snakes, and it will only get better as it learns over time.

Flappie also has other functions besides training your cat to be respectful when coming back home. Those same cameras can be used to capture your feline’s precious moments and even share them on social media. You could control it remotely via an app, but there are also manual controls in case things get a little out of hand. The smart door can also be connected to your cat’s chip, presuming it has one, so that it will only let your own cat in and keep curious strangers out.

Ogmen ORo is a smart robot companion and guardian for your beloved dog

Robots are invading our homes, in one way or another. There are the rolling discs that are robot vacuum cleaners, and there are a growing number of cute robots that aim to provide entertainment and sometimes even security for the whole family. Well, at least the human members of the family. Some households have “small” a.k.a. furry family members, and these are often left unserved by these modern innovations. Worse, they’re sometimes even put at risk because of how some smart home robots are not designed with pets in mind. Turning the tables around, Ogmen Robotics is revealing at CES 2024 a kind of intelligent home robot that was designed from the ground up to be the “pawfect” playmate, guardian, and caretaker for your canine best friend.

Designer: Ogmen Robotics

At first glance, the Ogmen ORo looks like one of those robots on wheels designed for human use. After all, it has the semblance of a face, or at least eyes, on a tablet-like screen and a somewhat tall frame that loosely resembles a body. They say that looks can be deceiving, and that’s definitely the case here since all of the ORo’s features were carefully selected for the benefit of dogkind primarily, and humans only by association.

At the top of the list of those features is its ability to provide physical, mental, and emotional stimulation through playful activities. It keeps track of the dog’s health and even detects when they’re feeling anxious, at which point ORo will play soothing music to help calm them down. It can even help owners train their dogs through obedience games and virtual training services right at home.

When paired with Orgmen’s food and medicine dispenser, the ORo robot ensures that the pooch gets a balanced diet while also monitoring their eating habits. For humans, ORo offers the benefits of remote connectivity and interaction, allowing owner and pet to bond even when they’re far apart. The robot can also take photos of the bet’s precious moments, allowing you to easily share and boast on social media.

Technology doesn’t need to benefit humans only. In fact, it should be used to benefit all, including the planet as well as our furry friends. Ogmen’s ORo puts those very same technologies that power human smart appliances and devices at the service of the four-legged members of the family. After all, having happy and healthy family members is a good thing for both humans and animals alike.

The Flappie AI cat door stops your pet from gifting you dead mice

Finding weird pet-related technology is a CES tradition, and this year is no exception. Take Flappie, for example. The Swiss start-up is showing off an AI-powered cat door that automatically locks if your kitty tries to bring in prey it caught from the outside.

On the side of the door facing the outside, you'll find a motion sensor and night-vision camera. Flappie says it has compiled a "unique and proprietary" dataset over the years, with a focus on diversity — this means getting lots of different kinds of cats as well as prey, filmed in a variety of different lighting conditions. The company says that its AI-powered detection system is accurate more than 90 percent of the time, which means your cat could still get a mouse inside. But hopefully that'll happen a lot less frequently.

There are some manual switches on the inside of the door so you can lock and unlock it any time you want as well as turn off the prey-detection system. Eventually, Flappie says that pets are likely to be trained that they can't enter when carrying something, and when they drop the prey the door will promptly unlock so they can get inside. (One of Flappie's co-founders admitted that a smart cat might figure out to drop the mouse, get the door open, pick it back up and then run in. But no solution is foolproof, right?)

Flappie cat door
Photo by Nathan Ingraham / Engadget

Flappie also included chip detection in its cat door. So if your pet has been microchipped, you can make it so the cat door only opens for your specific pet. And, of course, there's an app so you can control the door from your phone. But if you're not inclined to hook the Flappie door up to the internet, it'll still work via the controls on the door itself.

For starters, Flappie plans to launch its pet door in Switzerland and Germany later this spring, with plans to expand from there once it gets production scaled up. A US launch is part of the roadmap, but there's no word yet on when that'll happen, or how much the Flappie door might cost when it gets here. But a CES newsletter focused on Swiss tech companies says that Flappie will cost $399, or $199 with a two-year $8.90 monthly subscription to the app so you can see all the videos the door records of your pet.

Update, January 8, 2024 12:45 PM ET: We've added pricing details on the Flappie to this story.

Tasteful & Functional Cat Tree Is Designed As An Excellent Alternative To Cheaply Made Cat Furniture

For most of us, our pets aren’t simply pets! They’re our children and babies we consider our blood. We take care of them the way we would take care of our kids, and leave no stone unturned to ensure they are happy, healthy, and safe. If you’re looking for a new and improved way to take better care of your pet then you may want to look into Papuk’s CONNECT Collection by Vazken Karageozian.

Designer:Vazken Karageozian for PAPUK

Designed by Toronto-based interior designer Vazken Karageozian, the CONNECT Tree is an elegant and functional cat tree that is the ultimate haven for the kitties. Karageozian has two adorable felines himself – Grayson and Ella, and he decided to use his design talent to create something exceptional for his two favorite clients. As a result, Papuk which is Armenian for “soft and fluffy” was created.

The CONNECT Collection by Papuk offers a modular approach to the construction and design of a cat tree. It designs a cat tree as a multi-level system that can be personalized and customized with a bunch of attachable accessories, in turn creating a comfortable, cozy, and fun recreational activity for your cats, providing them with something else to do besides scratching and climbing your couch. The CONNECT Tree serves as the foundational element of the CONNECT system. It is the centerpiece of the multi-accessory system and is supported by other elements such as a scratching pad, cushion, tray platform, and hanging toy – which are available as a bundle or à la carte.

One of the designer’s motivations for creating the CONNECT Collection was the fact that most cheaply made cat furniture is disposed of in landfills owing to their poor and questionable construction and designs. The CONNECT Tree, on the other hand, features solid-ash dowels, ash-veneered plywood shelves, and accessories that can be added using genuine leather straps. The CONNECT Tree is designed by Vazken Karageozian as a solution that offers “inter-species happiness”, which is often found lacking in the pet product category.

Triangle’s design is a testament to the creativity that can be infused into pet products. The triangular shape serves as a canvas for the motifs of clouds, mountains, and the sun. The towering mountains are represented by the overall triangular structure, while the rolling ball symbolizes the gentle flow of clouds. The transparent ball, a central element of the toy, represents the shining sun. Together, these elements create a harmonious scene reminiscent of a sunrise or sunset over a cloud-covered mountain.

The design language of Triangle is a careful blend of curved and angular lines. This combination imparts a sense of softness and brilliance to the toy, making it visually appealing. Crafted from high-quality materials and featuring a seamless harmony between its components, Triangle transcends the typical notion of a pet toy, resembling more of an objet d’art that seamlessly integrates into any space.

What sets Triangle apart is its interactive nature. The toy is designed to maintain your pet’s continuous interest through an ingenious treat-dispensing mechanism. By placing treats inside the transparent ball, your pet is enticed to engage with the toy. When the cloud-shaped plate is touched, the ball rolls along rails, dispensing treats as it moves. This not only provides mental stimulation but also turns playtime into a rewarding experience for your furry companion.

Adding to its innovative features, Triangle allows for difficulty adjustment. The three holes in the transparent ball can be resized by turning its top part. This feature enables pet owners to customize the level of challenge, ensuring that the toy remains engaging for pets of varying activity levels. It’s a thoughtful addition that caters to the diverse needs of pets, keeping them entertained and mentally stimulated.

Practicality meets design in Triangle, as it is not only an engaging toy but also easy to maintain. All parts, including the transparent ball, are detachable, allowing for convenient cleaning. This feature ensures that Triangle remains a hygienic and safe plaything for your pet. The ease of disassembly and reassembly makes the cleaning process a breeze, enhancing the overall user experience.

At its core, Triangle is a simple yet ingenious mechanism toy that harnesses the beauty of nature. The ball within the toy moves by tilting around a central axis based on the principles of gravity. This design, inspired by the natural world, incorporates inclined surfaces and curved shapes. By subtly tilting the toy, users can manipulate the ball, creating an interactive and enjoyable experience for both pets and their owners.

In conclusion, Triangle is more than just a pet toy; it’s a thoughtful creation that brings together design, functionality, and the essence of nature. Its ability to engage pets, adjustable difficulty levels, and easy maintenance make it a standout product in the world of pet accessories. Triangle not only adds joy to your pet’s playtime but also elevates your living space with its aesthetic appeal—a true testament to the potential for creativity in the world of pet products.
