Star Trek TNG Computer Interface Dinnerware Set: Eating, Engage!

Because you can never have too much Star Trek around the house, Corrigan Studio created this Star Trek: The Next Generation LCARS 16-Piece Dinnerware Set, available on Wayfair. For those of you unfamiliar, LCARS (Library Computer Access/Retrieval System) is the computer operating system seen in the show. And now you can see it on your dinner table! And some people say dreams don’t come true.

Obviously, if you aren’t going to use these place settings to throw an extravagant dinner party where everybody dresses up as their favorite Star Trek character and talks about Klingons and Borgs all evening, you’re doing it wrong. You’re also doing it wrong if you don’t eat bowl after bowl of sugary cereal out of one of those square bowls every Saturday morning. Trust me; I’m a life coach.

Sure, you could live your life without Star Trek dinnerware, but why would you? I mean, it’s right here for the buying — why risk living an unfulfilled life when you can just write in and immediately cross off ‘Own Star Trek dinnerware’ from your bucket list? At least that’s what I tried to justify to my wife when I bought it. She’s…not thrilled.

Street food gets hygienic with this lamp-shaped, plate disinfecting steam device for food vendors

Some say that when traveling, one of the best ways that you can get to know the place better is by enjoying the city’s street food. Some of my best memories of my travels have been eating the often affordable and always interesting street cuisine of whatever place I’m visiting. But there are people who might not be that comfortable with the hygiene of street vendors, especially in the advent of COVID-19. A designer has come up with a possible solution to help both the vendors and to make people more secure about consuming street food.

Designer: Stalin Jr

Street food is of course famous for its “cuisine” and culture but not so much for its hygiene. Having a small cart or place on the street doesn’t really give much space for cleaning and disinfecting as thoroughly as we would expect from an actual restaurant. The AAVI is a design concept that aims to make it easier for street food vendors to disinfect their plates and maybe even other utensils by utilizing the power of steam.

At first glance, it actually looks like a lamp or a decorative device. But the design and functionality of the AAVI is actually based on the steamers that are used in dumplings and rice cakes. In fact, the designer says since it’s based on that, it can also be used in preparing dishes that need to be steamed. So it’s both a disinfecting and a cooking device, at least on paper. I’m not really sure if people would be comfortable seeing a device that does both.

The AAVI has a rotating base that will spread the disinfecting steam to all the plates stored. There is a jar in the middle where the water is stored and where the steam will be coming from and will come out of the head which will disinfect the plates that are placed in the container. There is also a water outlet faucet to remove the water because of course stagnant water is not good for hygiene and for the food being served as well.

This seems to be a pretty interesting and useful device to have on a street food cart. I haven’t eaten at one lately but pre-covid, hygiene wasn’t really an issue. Now though, it would put me more at ease if I knew there was better disinfection happening.

The PlayStation 5 gets a stunning ‘Matte Black’ makeover with Dbrand’s Sony PS5 plates

Quite like the Darth Vader to the StormTrooper, Dbrand’s matte black PS5 skins give the gaming console a beautiful, stealthy, almost menacing appeal.

Unlike most of Dbrand’s skins which come in the form of vinyl sheets that can be contoured over a phone, tablet, or laptop, the PS5 ‘skins’ from Dbrand are physically injection molded out of plastic. In order to apply them to your Sony PlayStation 5, you’ll need to physically remove the original white plates and install Dbrand’s custom plates… and while Sony’s legal team seems to be pretty annoyed at the fact, Dbrand assures it’s absolutely legal. Sort of like replacing the tires on your car.

What’s really incredible about Dbrand’s PS5 skin is the level of detail that’s gone into it. If you’ve closely inspected the PS5’s original white plastic plate, you’ll notice that the rough texture on it is in fact a microtexture comprising a cluster of Sony’s button symbols (in what might be one of the most remarkable Easter Eggs ever). Dbrand takes on a similar approach too, using their own microtexture of ‘apocalypse-inspired’ symbols that include robot heads, skull and cross-bones, and radioactive signs. Combined with the matte black plastic used for the plates, the microtexture really stands out (as you can see in the image below), creating a contrast that’s incredible to look at, and arguably great to touch too!

The Dbrand Darkplates (as they’re called) are available for pre-order and ship in May, although I’m pretty sure MKBHD already has a pair and is probably working on the finishing touches of his review video!

Robotic dishwasher saves restaurants from drudgery

Restaurants and other eateries are facing a shortage of dishwashers, and for understandable reasons -- it's inglamorous work with low pay. Dishcraft, at least, thinks robots can fill that gap. It just revealed a robotic dishwasher intended to clean...

Star Trek Starfleet Dish Set: Food… The Final Frontier

Fire up the replicator this Thanksgiving and invite all of your friends and family to eat from this classy Star Trek Dinner Set. Of course, you should get several sets so everyone can eat off them. These pieces have a gold Starfleet insignia on them and would look at home both in a starship mess hall and in your very own home.

The set includes one dinner plate, dessert plate, bowl, and a mug for your Earl Grey tea or Romulan ale. Speaking of Star Trek and Thanksgiving, where the hell is my replicator technology? The damn turkey takes hours and hours to make. When do I get a turkey that appears out of thin air? I’m waiting. That would make things a whole lot easier.

Anyway, This is the classy way for geeks to eat their meals. Remember the wise words of Khan. “Revenge is a dish best served cold, but it doesn’t have to be. Just heat the damn thing up and serve it on a Star Trek plate!” Okay, I may have added that last part, but it’s true.

Kirk and Spock used these or something similar in Star Trek VI, I believe – or maybe they’re the plates they used when they opened that restaurant on the Enterprise.

Star Wars Hoth Dinner Set May Get Kids to Eat

I don’t know why, but parents spend an inordinate amount of time trying to get kids to eat their food. They always want to eat when we don’t want them to, and then refuse to eat at meal times. 90% of parenting is trying to be sure your kid doesn’t go to school and tell the teacher you never feed them.

Star Trek Enterprise Sushi Set Boldly Goes Where No Raw Fish…

starship_enterprise_sushi_1

Oh, we hate bad headlines as much as the next guy, but sometimes it’s as if they write themselves, especially when it comes to Star Trek stuff. So you’ll have to forgive us. It doesn’t change the fact that the above Star Trek U.S.S. Enterprise Sushi Set is pretty awesome. You set the food down on the wooden plate, and use the ship’s warp trail as chopsticks. The top of the saucer section comes off to reveal a sauce dish, and you can rotate the ship so that it doesn’t get in the way of your grub. Best part is that it’ll only set you back $35, which is more than reasonable for what seems to be a Thinkgeek creation and an exclusive.

Blue Willow Plates with Game Boy Graphics

At first glance these plates look like typical vintage Blue Willow plates, but upon closer inspection you will see that they actually combine the Willow pattern with graphics from Game Boy versions of the Legend of Zelda and Pokémon games. These aren’t your grandmother’s plates after all.

gameboy_willow_1zoom in

These plates that mix the old with the new were made by UK-based artist Olly Moss who calls the style “8-Bit Willow“. Man, I wish I had a set of these for the dinner table.

Planetary Plates: Solar System Suppers

Throwing a dinner party for a bunch of astronomers or astrophysicists? I can think of no better way to serve up their meals than on these plates that look like the planets of our solar system.

planet plates 1 620x369magnify

This set of eight 10″ diameter melamine plates is decorated with watercolor prints of Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune. And while the scientist in me would prefer that they were each made to scale, it would suck to get the Mercury-sized serving while the person sitting across from you gets a portion as big as Jupiter. And can you imagine if they included the dwarf planets like Pluto and Ceres? Those plates would probably each hold a single pea.

planet plates 2 620x620magnify

While the plates are dishwasher safe, they can’t handle the microwave. Planets that can’t handle microwave radiation? Are you serious? These aren’t realistic at all.

Still, if you can overlook the lack of realism, these plates are still pretty cool. Hop into the ship of the imagination and pilot it over to Amazon, where you can land a set of Planet Plates for $38.95(USD).
