This stoneware lamp exudes an artistic yet playful character that livens up any desk

The primary purpose of lamps is to bring us light, but they don’t have to be limited to that task only. This is especially true for fixtures that always stay within our vision, whether they’re hanging from ceilings, stuck to walls, or standing on our desks. Because we tend to always notice things that we always see, these lamps can have a significant effect on our mood and state of mind. A poorly designed lamp, no matter how bright, will end up annoying us, consciously or subconsciously. Conversely, a lamp with a delightful design will brighten not only your space but also your mood, just like these cute yet heavyweight desk lamps that almost make you want to play with them all day long.

Something doesn’t have to actually be a toy to inspire a playful mood. Bright colors, irregular or curved shapes, and unbalanced or asymmetrical arrangements can already have our minds immediately thinking fun thoughts, perhaps a ball game, a playground set, or toy blocks. The Spot On Desk Lamps have these elements in droves, and they create an almost whimsical atmosphere on any desk it stands on.

There are three distinct parts that make up this rather vibrant lamp, all simple shapes and all derived from a circle. The base is a thick disc and the stem that stands off-center is a simple cylinder. The lamp shade itself is a sphere that seems to stick precariously near the top of the stand. While many lamp designs aim for symmetry and a visual of harmony, the Spot On evokes a sense of action and dynamism, as if the lamp is ready to fall and roll at any moment. Of course, it’s all just in our minds, because the desk lamp is as steady and stable as a piece of stone.

The pieces are indeed made of stoneware, individually handcrafted, in fact. Each piece has a different color from the rest, and there are eight color combinations in total. Although different, the colors still produce a certain beauty and harmony, painting a character that is lively but not discordant. There’s an almost Bauhaus-like theme here as well, with the use of opposite or asymmetrical shapes and colors. Suffice it to say, it’s an attractive piece, no matter which way you look at it.

Of course, a desk lamp is not just a piece of decoration, and the Spot On lamp’s 5W LED bulb makes sure of that. It delivers the same brightness as a 60W standard bulb but at a fraction of the energy consumption. This bulb, along with the structural parts that keep the lamp pieces together, is invisible to the viewer who only sees the lamp itself and its cord. It’s a design that reaches a degree of simplicity and minimalism without looking drab or mundane. It’s definitely spot on, pun totally intended, for a lamp that can light up not just your desk but also your life.

Interactive desktop accessories that give you a nostalgic break during those incessant zoom meetings!

To quote Don Norman, “Everything has a personality: everything sends an emotional signal. Even where this was not the intention of the designer, the people who view the website infer personalities and experience emotions.”

The swing set was my favorite playtime hobby, although I’d be lying if I said my infatuation with them has decreased with age. The thrill of swinging up into the air and the squeal of joy while swinging back to earth gave me a feeling of weightlessness and carefree joy that encapsulates childhood and nostalgia for me. That must be the same principle that led designer Aree Song to design these fun desktop accessories named Momento, to help you capture that little bit of joy and give you a much-needed escape from your mundane chores.

Momento is Spanish for ‘take a moment’, which is exactly what these accessories give you. Doubling simple forms and basic colors with the functionality we need in every work setting, Moment comprises three unique objects. The first is a tape dispenser that mimics the action of a swing. Second is a pop of yellow that is a pen holder, with a retractable bottom that rests flat when holding a pen and when flipped, it holds your pen in a seesaw-inspired rocking motion. Third, is a triangular cord organizer that also follows the up and down sliding movement that thrilled us as kids. Simple, fun, and essential, each of these designs is sure to find a place on your desks.

Marie Kondo’s philosophy of sparking joy is the motivating factor in these designs, with each one creating an emotional connection with the user. This adds a new dimension to the core utilitarian aspect of these everyday products – the products that have been a staple for years but get a new life here. We know form follows function – and here the form follows two functions – the act of sharpening, dispensing tape, or arranging cords and evoking joy. Beautiful isn’t it?!

With bright colors and blockish designs, this furniture collection makes the office playful!

If the OFIS Collection by chmara.rosinke vaguely reminds you of LEGO bricks, Minecraft, or Jenga, let it be known that it’s completely intentional! There’s a common consensus that making objects curved allows them to look less threatening and more playful, but the OFIS shows that if done right, the opposite is just as true!

Constructed from timber, and colored with strictly monochrome hues, the OFIS Collection’s furniture promotes a sense of fun and relaxation. The collection, which includes a swivel chair, a kneeling stool, desk, chaise-longue, and standing luminaire, follows a somewhat Constructivist-meets-Memphis 2.0 design approach, and questions everything we know about form and its relationship with comfort as well as spaces. Even the name OFIS flouts the traditional spelling, showing how the collection looks at reinterpreting our “professional” and “serious” relationship with our office and its artifacts. The collection debuted after the COVID-19 pandemic rocked the world, as a way of making the office appear more benign. As these professional workspaces began infiltrating our homes and sacred spaces, designers Ania Rosinke and Maciej Chmara felt the term ‘office furniture’ needed an absolute makeover. With the OFIS series of furniture, chmara.rosinke hope to ‘soften the edges’ of the ‘hard’-working attitude we’re supposed to embody at work… even though the furniture pieces themselves showcase hard, blocky, geometric forms!

Watch how this whimsical monster uses storytelling to depict the time!

The Number Cruncher watch has hands, but they aren’t for telling time! The watch face features an adorable cartoon monster that uses its hands to munch on numbers in a way that tells the time while also telling a story of sorts.

This blue monster (stomping its way through Central London) comes with a window at its stomach, and within its left hand. The hour of the day appears as the number in the monster’s hand, and as it munches on it, the minutes appear within the monster’s digestive system. It’s a good thing there’s no seconds dial on this watch because I honestly don’t know where one could possibly put it!

The Number Cruncher comes with a stainless steel body, a metal-mesh watch strap, and is waterproof up to 5ATM.
