Porsche Design Unveils the PD S20, its First Outdoor Wireless Speaker

Porsche Design, renowned for its sleek, high-performance products, has recently unveiled the PDS20, marking its first foray into the realm of outdoor speakers. This move comes after years of producing other acclaimed audio products, underscoring Porsche Design’s commitment to expanding its portfolio and catering to a wider range of audiophile needs.

Designer: Porsche Design

Porsche Design has always been about blending top-notch design with serious tech and adding a sprinkle of automotive joy; their audio line is no exception. Take the 911 Speaker 2.0 60Y 911 for instance,  a limited-edition speaker modeled on the Porsche 911’s iconic tailpipe, proving Porsche Design knows a thing or two about exclusive, high-end audio gear. And if you’re in the mood to splurge, there’s the 911 Soundbar 2.0 Pro. This baby will set you back a cool $12,000.00, but it quite literally transforms an original exhaust pipe from a Porsche 992 GT3 into a staggering 300W sound system… But here’s where things get interesting with the PDS20. This isn’t just another high-end gadget in Porsche Design’s arsenal. Priced at a respectable $245.00, it’s their first outdoor speaker, and it’s a game-changer. Unlike its predecessors, the PDS20 is built for the great outdoors, with a tough, weather-resistant design and a sound that’s just as impressive in the open air as it is indoors. It’s like Porsche Design decided to take everything they knew about premium sound, throw in a dash of adventure, and voila – the PDS20 was born.

The PDS20 comes crafted from anodized aluminum and gray acoustic fabric, presenting a minimalist and durable design. This cylindrical speaker is equipped with two passive radiators and a 1.75″ woofer, ensuring exceptional sound quality, particularly in the bass department. Its IP67 rating guarantees resilience against dust and water, making it an ideal companion for outdoor activities such as hiking or for enhancing open spaces with premium sound. The PDS20 also boasts a 10-hour battery life and quick USB-C charging, ensuring all-day uninterrupted listening. An integrated microphone facilitates easy interaction with voice assistants for playlist control, call management, and messaging, all controllable via the haptic buttons built into the PD S20’s fabric grill. For an immersive stereo experience, it can easily pair with a second speaker via Bluetooth, perfect for larger gatherings or home entertainment enhancement.

The PD S20’s blend of design styles allows it to easily transition between being a haute home speaker or an outdoor-friendly audio device. That anodized aluminum enclosure is undeniably classy, although it gets a slight hint of rugged when you slide that silicone ring in (which comes in 2 color options that you can alternate between). With its sleek design, robust build, and superior sound quality, this speaker is ready to take on any adventure, be it a backyard barbecue or a hike in the hills. It’s a refreshing addition to the otherwise relatively unattainable Porsche Design lineup (10 grand for a soundbar?!), combining their trademark elegance with outdoor-friendly functionality so you can carry your love for Porsche with you wherever you go. And the best part? You can snag one of these for $245.00. Starting from November 15, 2023, it’s up for grabs at Porsche Design stores, their website, and selected retailers.

Porsche Design brings back a legendary watch design with its titanium carbide Chronograph 1 Utility – Limited Edition

Porsche Design has over 51 years of experience creating luxurious and nearly indestructible watches; its classic 38 millimeter stainless steel Military Chronograph watch gained the praise of international air forces across the world for its remarkable comfort and durability. That explains the $13,000 price tag on the new Chronograph 1 Utility – Limited Edition watch, which is a modern reimagining of that classic chronograph.

Designer: Roland Heiler, Carsten Monnerjan (via Porsche Design)

Porsche Design noted in its official product page that this is the company’s first use of titanium carbide – an incredibly resistant material typically used to treat industrial machines – in any of its watches.  It’s not only for military pilots, though. Given Porsche Design’s legendary track record, it’s not a stretch to call the Chronograph 1 Utility – Limited Edition an expertly-designed watch that is foolproof against normal wear and tear like scratches, making it a high ticket item for any watch collector who values impeccable craftsmanship.

The watch face is designed to be even more readable in dark environments than previous Porsche Design watch models as well, thanks to the use of blue Super-LumiNova material on the individual hands, dial, and signature instead of Tritium.

For those unfamiliar with analog chronograph watches, there’s no simple way to set timers and alarms as you would effortlessly with a digital watch, so the watch itself needs to be built well enough to juggle multiple times purely through mechanical functionality. This is something Porsche Design does particularly well; the Chronograph 1 Utility – Limited Edition internal clock is a COSC-certified Porsche Design-caliber WERK 01.240, which is described as ensuring “maximum precision” with a flyback function that smoothly starts, stops, and resets time measurements in hours, minutes, seconds, and days.

Much like the original military pilot watch it’s based on, the Chronograph 1 Utility – Limited Edition is designed for heavy use in extreme environments, with a scratch-resistant sapphire glass face and water resistance up to 100 meters. Porsche Design clearly loves paying homage to its classic design, saying, “The new edition’s design, especially the matte-black dial, is of course still reminiscent of the icon from the 1970s.”

Its strap, made of “Genuine Porsche vehicle leather and textile,” is coated with black titanium carbide coating and has the lettering “Porsche Design Utility 2024 Chronograph 1 Limited Edition” etched into the back. As a result, its all-black exterior is as trendy and chic as it is impervious to the elements.

The Chronograph 1 Utility – Limited Edition watch is currently available to pre-order on Porsche Design’s website for $13,000. Only 250 pieces will be manufactured, and they will begin shipping out on January 15, 2024.

Porsche Design’s Futuristic Aluminum Sunglasses Have An Edgy Cybertruck Aesthetic

Porsche Design’s latest sunglasses pair perfectly with everyone’s favorite futuristic pickup truck!

Designed as a part of their Iconic Machined Series, the sunglasses come machined from a solid block of aluminum, giving them their distinctly edgy, futuristic aesthetic. Each pair of glasses sports an outline-style frame with a single-piece lens sitting in the middle, connecting both eyes right above the nose-bridge. The glasses come from Porsche Design, a luxury lifestyle brand created by F.A. Porsche, the grandson of the legendary automotive company’s founder. In keeping with the Porsche family tradition, these sunglasses are limited to just 911 units and go for $1600 CAD ($1192 USD) a pop…

Designer: Porsche Design

The glasses, dubbed P’8951, are the first of Porsche Design’s Iconic Machined series. Unlike most metal glasses that are simply formed from metal wire or stamped from metal sheets, these bad-boys are CNC-machined from solid metal. This undoubtedly has a few pros and cons. The pro is that CNC machining presents absolutely no design constraints, which explains the P’8951’s drop-dead gorgeous style. The con, however, is that this manufacturing method makes the sunglasses significantly heavier, as well as more expensive… but what is a thousand bucks to a true Porsche aficionado?! I also wouldn’t want to be caught wearing all-metal glasses in a heat-wave.

There’s an obvious comparison to be made to the Cybertruck here, given that both the sunglasses and the truck’s design share quite a few similarities. Both have a nude metallic finish, capped with tinted glass, and are dominated by edgy, angular contours. The most palpable difference, regrettably, is the fact that the P’8951 sunglasses are currently shipping, while the Cybertruck still remains nowhere in sight.

718 Spyder RS Chronograph will push Porsche enthusiasts to the edge of their seats

The new Porsche 718 Spyder RS is one open roadster designed without compromise! To bring that unfiltered thrill ride to a timed halt, Porsche has created the 718 Spyder RS Chronograph exclusively for owners of the stunning new Porsche.

Handmade in the Porsche watch factory in Solothurn, Switzerland, this chronograph watch combines high-quality design features of the Porsche roadster. Owing to the philosophy of lightweight agility, the 718 Spyder RS Chronograph features a titanium case to keep it as light as possible.

Designer: Porsche Design

As said, the 718 Spyder RS chronograph coincides with Porsche’s light weighted design aesthetic with a titanium case in two options: natural titanium or the black titanium. Just like its motorized counterpart, the watch offers customization options. It allows the bezel with tachymeter to be personalized to match the case color.

Further, to cater to individual preference, the colored dial can be adapted in a full selection of 718 Spyder RS standard, metallic, and special colors i.e. 114 Paint to Sample options. The 718 Spyder RS chronograph features a scratch-resistant, anti-reflective sapphire crystal underneath which are the ceramic hour and minute indices treated with Super-LumiNova for legibility in dark.

The watch is powered by Porsche Design WERK 01.200 COSC-certified movement featuring Flyback function. It is showcased through a glass bead-blasted titanium back matching the case color. On the flipside, mechanical gear indicator at 9 o’clock emphasizes on the 718 Spyder RS legacy. It features a chequered flag design and ‘Spyder RS’ logo.

The 718 Spyder RS chronograph is paired with a color-matching strap crafted in leather. It incorporates an attachment made from the black Race-Tex material used inside the cabin of the 718 Spyder RS. This element creates a harmonious connection between the timepiece and vehicle. To get this exceptional complement to the 718 Spyder RS, you will have to shell out $8,800.

Porsche Design lounge chair is a geeky napping pod for workaholics

Porsche Design’s timeless elegance and functional design reflects in the fair share of furniture pieces the creative house has released so far. Adding to the growing list of furniture designs in Ferdinand Alexander Porsche’s brand collection for home and office.

Taking the elegance of the brand name into the smart furniture design territory for public spaces, or for that matter, Porsche’s own lounge space is this relaxing sofa pod that can be oriented in any set of configurations.

Designer: PDF Haus and Suhyeon Kwak

The design team has penned this lifestyle office furniture for Porsche Design’s resting area to create a balance between work and rest. The design of the pod completely secludes the user from the rest of the world, and doesn’t miss out on the geeky aspect. This ergonomically comfortable chair supports the user’s lower back and shoulders depending on the body shape for complete relaxation during breaks. It also comes with a recliner function for the odd nap to recharge the body’s battery.

There’s space on one side of the chair to keep books, tablet or snacks. A wireless charging island gives you complete freedom to stay put in place in the pod if you get anxious when the mobile device battery starts to dip. On the outside of the lounge chair, the ambient light changes color depending on the active status of the user. Each of these lounge chairs can be used individually or arranged in any configuration as desired.

Contrasting monochrome color variations of the lounge chair in light and dark grey will go well with any amenity space. Of course, it keeps up with Porsche Design’s signature monochrome hues, matched with the clean lines. The leather upholstery is elegantly done to keep up with the Porsche Design DNA, and maintain the definitive element of automotive sportiness too.

Porsche Design ‘drifts’ into the TWS market with its sleek noise-canceling PDT60 Truly Wireless Earbuds

With a sleek aluminum exterior that offers a stunning visual upgrade to most plastic-body earbuds, the Porsche Design PDT60 TWS Earphones aim at creating an experience that’s as good in the visual department as it is at handling audio. Porsche Design’s repertoire features a whole host of hi-end audio gear, although the PDT60 is easily the smallest in that bunch, fitting snugly into your ear to deliver immersive, balanced audio directly into your head.

Sure, one could make the case that Porsche Design is a little too late in the TWS department (with practically everyone making TWS earphones nowadays), although the earbuds are clearly designed to make a style statement more than anything. The earphones champion a minimalist design, featuring a matte aluminum body that has the same premium appeal as the matte metal finish on most high-end laptops and computers. The earphones come with the Porsche Design logo emblazoned on their front, and sit in a case that’s partly matte metal too, with the same PD monogram embossed on the case’s sliding leather lid.

On the feature front, the PDT60 performs just as well as other TWS earphones in its class. It comes with hybrid noise-canceling – combining active noise-canceling for removing background and ambient noise while listening, and electronic noise-canceling that allows for crystal clear conversations during calls and video chats. On the inside, the PDT60 is outfitted with 8mm neodymium drivers (considerably smaller than the 11mm drivers on the AirPods Pro which are within the same price range), and connects to devices via Bluetooth 5.0, pretty standard for TWS earphones nowadays. The PDT60 accommodate for touch-based input, letting you tap, hold, and slide your finger on the earphones to answer/reject calls, control music playback + volume, and summon your phone’s virtual assistant. The earphones even have a battery life of 5 hours, with an additional 15 hours when placed back in the charging case. They also support fast-charging and have the ability to charge wirelessly, allowing you to use any Qi-compatible wireless charging mat to juice the buds when they’re low on battery. The TWS earbuds ship in the charging case along with a USB-C charging cable and 3 earbud-tips for different ear sizes, although even though they provide a snug fit, with an IPX5 water-resistance rating, they’re just about good for exercising and I’d caution against wearing them in heavy rain or near a pool.

At $299, Porsche Design’s PDT60 easily falls in the ‘premium’ spectrum of the TWS market. They aren’t strictly for audiophiles (whether they sound great too is still yet to be determined), although for people who want earphones that rank higher on the style quotient, the metal-bodied PDT60 makes for a pretty compelling purchase! They look significantly more premium than Nothing’s earbuds too.

This Porsche Design watch’s profound dial is influenced by Porsche’s first win of 24 Hours of Le Mans race!

Watchmaking is an art that requires a very unique taste for design, mechanical movement, and a certain story that defines the very essence of a timepiece’s inspiration. No doubt there are countless luxury watches in particular from Swiss watchmakers that are millimeter perfect in every aspect. Over the years, the art of watchmaking has seen a paradigm shift in the watch dial designs which focus on showing mechanical movement. Budding product designer Simon Grytten wants to take a detour from what’s trending right now and go back to the roots where timekeeping was the main influence behind any watch face.

Simon reimagines the dynamics of the dial with the twist of the automotive element in this Porsche Design Watch inspired by the Porsche 917 which took the crown at the 24 Hours of Le Mans in 1970 and 1971. The rectangular shape of the timepiece sits pretty authoritatively on the wrist, emphasizing the timekeeping in style. The dial elevates to the middle section, carrying an element of Porsche 917’s contoured looks that were so trendy in the 70s era. To keep things peppy Simon reimagines this Porsche Design watch in different dial colors and strap options. The big winding crown depicts the rear end of the sports car.

The Targa branding on the sides hints at the influence from the iconic Porsche 911 Targa 4S. Although the designer doesn’t narrow in on any documented connection to this design, elements like the front dial markers and the colorways point towards the Targa inspiration of the watch’s design along with the Porsche 917.  Watch face is well complimented by the straps of the timepiece – something that Porsche Design will surely take notice of for their future luxury accessory design.

Porsche Design x Huawei breathe a new life into smartphone Aesthetics

I’ve been rather verbose in my appreciation of Huawei’s experimentation with smartphone aesthetics. First came the stunning metallic gradients, then came the Mate 20, with its unique square shaped 3-lens-plus-flash arrangement, and a metallic gradient that was even richer than before. Porsche Design put a spin on this particular model in Huawei’s line-up, and the Mate 20 RS was born.

The Mate 20 RS is worth talking about because it’s no secret that smartphones are looking almost eerily similar nowadays. An industry that once prided itself in some wildly designed phones that went on to become icons of their times (the Moto Razr and Nokia N.Gage come to mind) is now filled with an eerily similar suspect line-up of phones, where the user literally spends hours trying to tell apart phones and sort the good from the bad. In getting Porsche Design on board, Huawei doesn’t just push the envelope, it also shows that smartphone companies should, once in a while, look outside their hardware design teams to work on aesthetics and detailing (take Philippe Starck’s Xiaomi Mi Mix 2 for instance). Porsche Design’s reinterpretation of the Huawei Mate 20 RS involves a leather and glass construction. With leather on two sides, you’ve got a phone that is great to grip and doesn’t slip easily off your palms. The glass strip running across the center forms a canvas for reflections and highlights to give the phone its mirror-finish appeal. It also looks like a racing stripe, giving the phone a sportscar vibe. Lastly, the presence of the glass strip allows the phone to charge wirelessly (at breakneck speeds of 70% in half an hour) too.

The Mate 20 RS makes a great case for getting product and industrial design studios and professionals (with interdisciplinary experience) on board to design smartphones, possibly making them stand out again, and ushering in the second golden era of mobile phone design!

A Hardcore Hard Drive

porsche_hard_drive_1

All rejoice! The Porsche Design Hard Drive is officially the coolest in the world! Designed for professionals, the aesthetic of the hard drive does tend to match the tech you connect it to. Encased in anodized aluminum with a black plate on the top etched with the branding, this hard drive pairs perfectly with your Macbook. It happens to be one of the first hard drives to honor the USB Type C connection for more secure and faster file transfers. Speaking of file transfers, the Porsche Design Hard Drive has possibly the most needed features integrated into its design. The first innovative feature is the green LED strip on the edge. The strip lights up from start to end indicating file transfer progress. It’s just more convenient to know what percent of your files have transfered by just looking at the progress bar lit up on the drive rather than maximize and minimize unnecessary tabs. It even comes with a Force Eject button that allows you to remove the hard drive in a hurry. You can see the inconspicuous button right beside the Type C USB port. Its aim is to be your emergency resort, rather than a habitual function. Lastly, the hard drive comes with a gloss black dock that allows it to stand tall on your desk… because just like evolution made the humans stand tall, the hard disk must follow the same suit!
