Modder Runs DOOM on Electronic Badge from ElectroMagnetic Field Festival

Because there’s a festival for everything, programmer Phil Ashby went and took an electronic badge from the 2022 ElectroMagnetic Field Festival (aka EMF Camp) and got it to run DOOM. I am not surprised. I also won’t be surprised when somebody manages to run DOOM on my Casio watch; it’s simply the natural progression of things.

The badge, which is powered by “a dual-core 32bit Xtensa MCU, 8MB of RAM, and 8MB of flash storage,” also features a tiny display, perfect for those pixelated DOOM graphics. It’s hard to believe the game was so cutting edge back in 1993 when it came out. We’ve come so far! I mean, in some areas, in others, it feels like we’re going backward.

What’s next, running DOOM on objects that aren’t even electronic? Now that will be true technological progress. Just imagine – playing DOOM on a book! It may sound far-fetched, but that’s because I’m still gassed up from the dentist this morning. Thank God my wife drove.

Modder Packs Tiny OLED Display Into LEGO Computer Brick

LEGO builders: their level of ingenuity never ceases to amaze me. Case in point, this mod created by programmer (not singer) James Brown, who managed to pack a tiny OLED display into a translucent brick to mimic a LEGO computer terminal. How about that! Eight-year-old me is going crazy over this, and current me is going even crazier!

The 3D printed brick has a tiny 0.5″ OLED display inside, controlled by an ARM-based microcontroller James made especially for the build. You just plug the brick into a LEGO baseplate powered by a 9V battery, and voila, the computer comes to life with lines of make-believe code that mimic the original screen. Amazing!

Seeing as how I have zero skills or knowledge related to mods of this nature, James, please tell me you plan on opening an online store and selling these. I would buy a bunch! Well, maybe not buy, but how many will you trade me for a wedding band?

Adafruit releases WebIDE alpha for Raspberry Pi, eases beginners into coding

DNP Raspberry Pi

If you've been intrigued by the Raspberry Pi but were hesitant to get one because you're new to Linux, Adafruit has a solution for you. The team that brought us the Raspberry Pi Education Linux Distro has come up with a special WebIDE (Web Integrated Development Environment) designed to run on the affordable barebones computer. It's entirely web-based so there's no need to install any software -- just launch a browser, hook up your Pi, and you're ready to go. To make life easier for coders, the platform has a terminal built in, plus there's an automatic updater included to keep folks running only the freshest version of WebIDE. It's currently at the alpha stage, so only experienced users should install it for now, but Adafruit's hoping to roll out a stable release suitable for programmers of all levels sometime soon.
