And so it begins: the PS4, hacked

PS4 hacked

A year and six months is all it took a group of Brazilian hackers to jailbreak the PS4 – or so these people claim.

According to a report from Brazilian website UOL, Brazil is already seeing its first wave of “jailbroken” (AKA hacked) PS4 consoles, with many pre-loaded games inside them. This has nothing to do with the infamous shared account system, but is instead a process of soldering a chip into the console, and then “connecting a laptop and loading the games”.

“What we do is turn a console into a clone of another. We copy the information of the bios and its processor[…] Everything bought on a PS4 can be copied to another system, and this is in itself a better system than shared accounts”. The process uses a Raspberry Pi, and is already being offered in several stores of Sao Paulo. It costs in between $100 and $133 USD, and then the store returns the console to the user, preloaded with games. Seemingly, these games can even be updated and played online without any issues

The UOL team claims to have tried out this system, which does allegedly work. According to these hackers, the idea behind this hack comes from Rusia.

The truth is, even if this was relatively quick – compared to what happened with the PS3, at least – this is a common occurrence in the console world and the video game industry when it comes to popular video game consoles. Ever since the PlayStation 1 and all the way to the Xbox 360, Wii and Dreamcast, all consoles have eventually fallen prey to hackers, and companies have had to live with that.

Regardless of how effective and functional this hack is – there is no reason to not trust UOL, who are themselves a reputable news source – we still don’t know how Sony will react. Probably with an eventual firmware update patching this vulnerability. Time will tell.

In the meanwhile, Sony haven’t made any comments.

May NPD: PS4 On Top In Hardware, Watch Dogs & Mario Kart 8 Lead The Software Charts

The PlayStation 4, Watch Dogs, and Mario Kart 8 beat out all the rest in this month’s NPD sales numbers.

The NPD Group has come out with their monthly report on the financial state of the video game business, and Sony’s PlayStation 4 – like it has for the previous five months – is at the top of hardware sales chart for May 2014. At last checked, the PS4 has sold 7 million units worldwide as of April according to Sony, a figure considerably more than what has been reported for both Microsoft’s Xbox One and Nintendo’s Wii U.

In general though, May was a successful hull for every gaming platform with overall hardware sales up 95 percent from May 2013 by $187 million. A good sum of those sales were predictably from the PS4 and the Xbox One, but even the Nintendo Wii U and the PlayStation Vita saw boosts in their year-over-year performances, likely thanks to new hardware bundles (the Mario Kart 8 & Borderlands 2 bundles) being released in the same month.

Meanwhile, software sales also had a nice uptick by ending a six month decline. Consumers bought $274 million’s worth of new games at retail in May, 57 percent up from the $175 million purchased last year. Ubisoft’s Watch Dogs and Nintendo’s Mario Kart 8 were to two biggest sellers – both certainly helping to drive hardware sales on their respective consoles – followed by MLB 14: The Show, Wolfenstein, and Minecraft.

Here’s the full list of the top-selling software for May 2014:

1. Watch Dogs (PS4, Xbox One, 360, PlayStation 3, PC)
2. Mario Kart 8 (Wii U)
3. MLB 14: The Show (PS4, PS3, Vita)
4. Wolfenstein: The New Order (PS4, Xbox One, 360, PS3, PC)
5. Minecraft (360, PS3)
6. The Amazing Spider-Man 2 (360, PS3, PS4, Xbox One, 3DS, Wii U)
7. NBA 2K14 (360, PS4, PS3, Xbox One, PC)
8. Titanfall (360, Xbox One, PC)
9. Kirby: Triple Deluxe (3DS)
10. Call of Duty: Ghosts (360, PS4, PS3, Xbox One, PC, Wii U)
