Retractable ceiling-mounted laundry rack saves space and functions as a lamp

Space is a very expensive commodity these days, especially for people living in cramped apartments in cities. Every square inch counts, especially on the floor where most things are placed unless they stick to walls or hang from the ceiling. Because of how most furniture, appliances, and tools are designed, you can quickly lose precious floor space even for things that you don’t have to use daily. A laundry rack, for example, should really only be there when you have clothes to dry, so it makes little sense for them to take up space on other days. That’s the principle behind this rather unique retractable clothes rack that descends from the ceiling when you need it and serves as a ceiling lamp on the days that you don’t.

Designer: GoodLiving

Furniture designs are becoming smarter when it comes to space-saving tricks, which include modular parts, foldable sections, and the like. Most of these, however, are still placed on floors and are unable to utilize the free space of walls and ceilings. Singaporean company GoodLiving is trying to change that for at least one kind of household product, the rack where we hang clothes to dry even indoors.

These racks are installed on ceilings and are automatically deployed using scissor mechanisms at the press of a remote control button. This means that the collapsed form of the rack pretty much hides itself and gets out of the way when not needed. To make sure that even the space it occupies isn’t wasted when not in use, the base of the rack serves as LED lighting for the room.

These peculiar hanging machines, however, do more than just hang your clothes to dry. They’re equipped with fans and heaters that blow hot air to dry clothes even faster. It also has repellents for dust mites and bacteria, as well as ionizers that prevent the buildup of odor and keep the fabric soft to the touch. It’s definitely more than what you could get with a traditional dryer, and you don’t even have to sacrifice space to place such a large box in your house.

Granted, your room probably won’t look that presentable with clothes hanging from the ceiling, but that’s something no one else has to see. For single-person apartments or small houses, the practical benefits of having such a space-saving laundry rack far outweigh the temporary unappealing visual of hanging clothes. Then again, you would have probably hanged them on an equally visible regular rack as well, so might as well just bear with the sight for just a day than to always see that rack every day, even when there are no clothes hanging from it.

Magazine rack concept defies common sense with intersecting tubes to hold your books

We’ve seen an almost endless train of design ideas for furniture, ranging from shelves to chairs to tables. The latter even come in different types, functioning as dining tables, work desks, or anything in between. Although table designs can vary greatly, the one thing that they all have in common is a solid and whole surface to place things on top of them. This is true for almost any piece of furniture as well since there always needs to be a flat surface to hold things or bodies. That’s the kind of standard design that this magazine rack and side table in one throws out the window, utilizing two intersecting groups of tubes to hold up books and magazines in an almost illusion-like manner.

Designer: Deniz Aktay

Although we rely on them critically, it’s almost too easy to trick our brains and our eyes with optical illusions and crafty designs. Logic would tell us that slipping a book into a slot like a grill would let the book fall without something to stop it. That “something,” however, doesn’t need to be the ground or a flat surface, just like what this Interspace magazine rack design concept tries to demonstrate.

The rather confusing piece of furniture is actually made of two groups, both of them a row of steel tubes bent to form a loop. Normally, if you put anything in the space between tubes, it would fall down to the opposite side. The trick that Interspace uses is to connect the two groups perpendicularly to each other while also leaving a small gap in the middle where the bottom of one extends beyond the top of the other or vice-versa.

This creates a sort of natural “stopper” for anything that goes in between the gap since the intersecting tubes below it serve as the “floor” for the item. This works whether inserting the book from the top or from the side. The empty areas formed at the top and bottom of the structure also become spaces for reading materials that might be too thick for the grill. Because of the intersecting design of the tubes, arranging books can become almost like a puzzle, where you decide the best place for them in between the gaps.

The curious form of steel tubes intersecting with one another also creates a rather curious visual, almost to the point that it could confuse the eyes because of the play of form, light, and shadows. The top surface of the rack can also serve as a side table, admittedly for larger objects that don’t risk falling into the gaps. You could, theoretically, also put your drink on top, though it’s probably best to have some tray in between for good measure.

This modular desk rack saves space, organizes stuff like you’ve always wanted to

Cluttered desk drawers affect us in more ways than one can comprehend – virtually 90 percent of us are rippled by the perils of it. Also, they are the main cause of stress and diminished productivity. Well, who doesn’t desire to make the most of their time at the desk or in front of the screen? That’s where the Otis Customizable Desk Organizer designed by Miami-based studio Practiko comes into play.

The modular rack for your desk setup can be used in a standing position or hung from the desk underside too. The choice purely depends on the kind of available space and the use-case scenarios. The transition between different work modes can be easily adapted by the removable tray system which makes this desk organizer a must-have.

Otis provides flexible customized spacing that helps you organize and categorize things. Making it much easier to access things. Sure, drawer organizers are an option, but they don’t always fit right, waste space and add to the clutter in the long run. Otis solves this with movable dividers to maximize usable space. Otis Rack units – the hanger and drawer – can be used independently or in a combined configuration. The accessory fits different sized desks, and yes, standing desks too. It can even be used as a desktop tray to keep things handy to switch between different tasks.

This desk tower rack is crafted out of powder-coated steel and has perforated detailing. The trays inside are made out of high-density recycled propylene material. Durability is not going to be an issue here, but one thing I’m a bit skeptical about is the meshed open design. This will let in day-to-day dust particles inside and over time you might have to clean all the drawers to ward off any household dust. Other than that. It’s an undeniably cool resourceful accessory every geek’s den ought to have.

A headrest for your hardhat

halley_helmet_stand_1

Walk into my house and you’ll see my helmet lying somewhere on the floor of my living room. I’ve got no other place to keep it! It occupies too much real estate on tabletops, and doesn’t really fit on the coat-hanger, so the only option I have is to have it resting on the floor somewhere. Marc Graells, the designer of the Halley Helmet Stand had a similar disposition. “I was fed up with spending money on my helmet to then have it hidden in a cupboard or torn by a traditional hook. I take pride in my bike and my helmet on the road and I wanted to bring that into my home. I was looking at the racks out there but nothing met my expectations, I wanted something functional that would look after my helmet but also stylish.”, he said.

The Halley displays your helmet in full glory, while making sure its spherical resting area doesn’t damage the inner lining of the helmet. Made to look like a decorative element without the helmet, but recede into the background and let the helmet shine when placed on it, the Halley Helmet Stand knows when to look aesthetic, and when to be functional. And it’s so much better than storing your helmet in your cupboard… or keeping it on the floor (who, me?).

What if we could mount a bike on the wall?

Need your city to have more space? Then how about a bicycle rack that fits on a wall and makes space for pedestrians. The Wall-Hanger Bike Rack is wall mounted and user-friendly. It affords easy parking and protects against theft. It may not be the best solution for city-cramped-spaces, but is a step in the right direction as far as ideation goes. Think about it!
