Scientists Create Self-Healing Skin For Robots Using Human Cells

Researchers at The University of Tokyo have covered a robotic finger with skin created from actual human skin cells. It’s also capable of repairing itself when a collagen sheet is applied. And repair itself, it’s going to need to because I’m taking that Terminator finger down!

Professor Shoji Takeuchi believes realistic skin is the key to robots becoming human-like enough for society to accept them. I don’t know about you, but I feel like ultra-realistic humanoid robots are the opposite direction we should be headed. I think robots should all look like Rosie the Robot from The Jetsons. The key is non-threatening, not lifelike. That’s just creepy.

Takeuchi says that the current silicone skin used for robots just isn’t lifelike enough for humans to foster a kinship with our robotic brethren and plans on adding sweat glands, hair follicles, and fingernails to the robots in the future. And on the day that happens, I’ll be waving goodbye as my rocket blasts off far into space, away from all the hairy, sweaty robots on earth.

Man Spends $15,791 on Ultra-Realistic Dog Costume

Because we all have dreams, and everyone’s dreams are different, a Japanese man named Toko recently spent $15,791 on an ultra-realistic Border Collie costume so he could dress up as his favorite dog breed. Hey, different strokes for different folks – that’s what my favorite high school substitute teacher Mrs. Gitland used to tell us while relating a story about how her daughter raises ostriches in Arizona.

Toko hired Zeppet Workshop, a company known for its costume work in movies and television as well as its custom furry commissions, to make the suit, which took over 40 days to construct through trial and error. According to an employee at Zeppet, “Since the structure of the [human] skeleton is very different, we spent a lot of time studying how to make it look like a dog.” Well, clearly all that studying paid off because the result is uncanny. So uncanny I’m not convinced this isn’t a dog in a human suit wearing a dog costume.

It was smart choosing a Border Collie instead of a chihuahua on account of 1) the obvious size and 2) all that extra belly fur helping to hide the fact that there’s an adult man in there who chose to spend $16,000 on a costume to look like a dog. Now just to be clear, I’m not judging – if anything I’m just jealous I don’t have the money to commission the ultra-realistic turtle costume I’ve always dreamed of.

Pastry Artist Creates Edible Desk Lamp: Luxo, Edible

Presumably envisioned in a eureka moment complete with a lightbulb going off over his head, incredibly talented pastry chef and chocolatier Amaury Guichon constructed a realistic desk lamp entirely out of edible ingredients. At first, I couldn’t believe my eyes. I saw those little springs and I thought ‘no way.’ But, as Amaury proves in the video, ‘yes way.’

The lamp base was constructed with a sesame streusel, black sesame Japanese roll cake, crunchy sesame tuile, a sesame praline, and a black sesame mousse. Sesame everything! The lamp’s upper armature was constructed from molded chocolate, and the light bulb was filled with crunchy caramelized sesame, which Amaury releases when he purposefully breaks the bulb in the video like a piñata.

Obviously, this is the perfect cake for anyone who’s ever fantasized about taking a bite out of that hoppy little Pixar lamp, Luxo Jr. And who hasn’t, right? Come on, who hasn’t… right?

Realistic Pokémon are Super Cute: I Choose You!

Pokémon are cute little creatures as cartoons and I’d bet everyone who has ever seen one of the creatures on TV or in a game has wondered what they would look like in the real world. Artist Joshua Dunlop has created a series of images he calls Pokémon Zoology.

He took some classic Pokémon and then rendered them so that they look like real animals. Pikachu looks like a bunny rabbit that’s been dipped in yellow paint, while Charizard looks like it’s right out of the modern Pete’s Dragon film only with a cabbage glued to its tail. Squirtle is cute but also a little creepy. I think its the eyes. Charmander is blissfully unaware that his tail is on fire.

Dunlop says that he sketched rough ideas in Photoshop with real animals as a reference. After that he used 3D-Coat to build and texture the models. He’s working to raise funds on Patreon to fund a Pokémon zoology website that would look at the diets, habits, breeding, and training of the Pokémon.
