Origami-inspired Prefab Pod with a folding design makes it easy to set up instant refugee shelters

Originally designed as a modular pod for luxury getaways, Hariri & Hariri Architecture’s prefab folding structure is now proving to be an incredibly cost and labor-effective solution to ongoing refugee crises caused by political unrest and climate change. The prefabricated structure ships as a flat-packed unit and can be opened out and assembled in mere minutes with just a crane and minimal manual labor, allowing you to set up instant refugee shelters anywhere.

Conceptually, the pod’s unique folding structure is inspired by Origami. It’s designed to fold flat when not in use and can be shipped as a set of flat palettes stacked together and assembled on-site. When assembled, the walls open outwards and lock into a hexagonal shape, making the pod’s structure geometrically stable and modular.

Designers: Hariri and Hariri Architecture

Iranian architects Gisue and Mojgan Hariri designed the prefab pod based on their own experience of losing their home. The compact pods have an area of 500 sq.ft., making them modestly sized for a family of 3-4. The single-story pods can also be linked together to create larger living units.

The prefab pod comes pre-hinged and can be set up without any tools. The panels on the pod are made from Equitone (a fiber-based cement) to create a robust yet lightweight structure, while large glass windows let abundant light in, eliminating the need for electric lighting during the day. Open areas in the structure also promote natural ventilation.

Harari & Harari Architecture emphasize the versatile nature of the pod by pointing out how it can simultaneously be used as “a refugee or disaster shelter, a woods or beach cabin, assembled into clusters for large music or sports events, and even into a single luxury home.”

Sanctuary You Can Wear

tent_01

Shelter is paramount for refugee well-being but the unfortunate reality is that camps take an incredible amount of time to produce, especially with mass volume pouring in. When they’re finally up-and-running, personal space and comfort are hard to come by. Furthermore refugees can barely carry personal belongings, let alone a tent. This thoughtfully designed wearable shelter aims to alleviate some of these struggles by providing a personal sanctuary that moves with the user to provide comfort and security day or night, awake or asleep.

During the day, it’s an ultra-lightweight jacket that protects someone from the elements. At night, it expands into a basic tent for a parent and a child, or two spooning adults. Based on the principles of inflation and the versatility of a vest, the design is made from lightweight Tyvek material. As a wearable piece, the clothing is equipped with pockets for personal items, a hood and heat insulation. As a tent, many can be connected to one another to join people of larger groups together. Wearable Shelter is a 2016 A’Design Award Winner.

Reliable Kit

The spate of natural disasters last year gave rise to many concepts and ideas that tries to make life for the survivors a tad bit easier, until they get rehabilitated and settled. One such attempt is the Rely foldout-sleeping domain. The kit includes a compact sleeping bag with components a versatile stool that turns into a place to hold your water and supplies. It even includes a basic night lamp; overall I think it’s a very clever kit.

Rely contains a sleeping bag and light shelter, a bottle of water, a lighting tool, a stool, tableware, and toiletries. All the components are rolled up into a hexagon-shaped cylinder that can be zipped up and carried on one’s back with the help of straps. The rigid cylinder casing can be used as a sun shelter for the head when the bed is unfolded. The two ends of the cylinder store goods. On one side, a small storage compartment houses the bottle of water, tableware, and toiletries. When it is turned upside down, this ‘cabinet’ can be used as a stool. On the other side, a lighting tool is accommodated. It can be used as a lamp, and also as a flashlight that is charged via the kinetic energy associated with pushing a button. The lamp can be stood upright on its base. The rolled-up unit is efficient to stack and transport.

Rely is a 2012 red dot award: design concept winner.

United Nations launches My Life as a Refugee Android app (video)

DNP New Android app designed by the United Nations asks if you could survive as a refugee video

As the great Tom Petty once said, you don't have to live like a refugee, but one UN agency is hoping you'll at least download its new app to see what it could be like. My Life as a Refugee is designed to raise awareness about the plight of millions of people living in conflict-ridden places around the globe, and it's available right now for free on Android (coming soon to iOS). We found the app to be only marginally interactive, with users simply encouraged to click through a litany of facts. However, you do get to choose one of two possible options before time runs out as each situation unfolds. You can only "play" a certain amount each day, which means you get some cliffhangers, and of course you can "share your experience" on Facebook right from the app. You can learn more there in the source link.
