Polaris Builds a Working Replica of an Apollo Lunar Rover

There have been lots of cool things going on to celebrate the 50th anniversary of NASA’s Apollo 11 moon landing, but this might just be the coolest. Off-road vehicle maker Polaris Industries created a virtually perfect replica of the original NASA Lunar Rover Vehicle (LRV), which first appeared on the moon in 1971.

Polaris teamed up with the U.S. Space and Rocket Center (USSRC) in Huntsville, Alabama to recreate not only the vehicle’s familiar looks but made a version that can actually drive. It can accelerate, brake, and has four-wheel Ackerman steering, just like the original vehicles that are still sitting up there on the lunar surface today.

To build the replica LRV, they first created a custom chassis, then scavenged parts from a variety of Polaris vehicles, including snowmobiles, motorcycles, Slingshots, ATVs, side-by-sides, electric GEM’s and military vehicles. In order to complete the look, they even got their hands on the molds that were used to cast the fenders on the original LRVs.

Polaris hasn’t shared any video of their LRV in action, but it would be pretty awesome to take a ride on this amazing custom-built vehicle (while wearing a spacesuit, of course). The replica made its public debut at the USSRC Apollo Celebration Car Show last week in Huntsville, and is expected to appear at at a few more events throughout the year, including a lap around the Talladega Speedway this October.

Namco Arcade Machine Collection Gives Action Figures Something to Play

The NAMCO Arcade Machine Collection are miniature replicas of some of your favorite arcade games from way back when. While they’re no playable, you could still use them to create your own mini arcade hall right on your desktop.

namco_arcade_1

Each is a 1/12-scale reproduction that uses the original schematics and cabinet artwork of the original machines. Everything is recreated in stunning detail, from the controls and the screen to the coin slot and the individual art pieces. They look like machine-accurate replicas to me, and I don’t even care if they got some details wrong or not.
I need these.

Only five titles are available right now: Pac Man, Tank Battalion, Galaga, Galaxian, and Rally-X. I’m hopeful more will be added soon.

DIY 3D Printed Light-up Halo Energy Sword: Slice & Solder

There are tons of foam or plastic replicas of the iconic Energy Sword, but tinkerers can make one that does more with less weight with the help of Adafruit’s guide. The company’s design uses 3D printed components and a pair of RGB LED strips to create a cool prop or toy.

3d_printed_light_up_halo_energy_sword_by_adafruit_1zoom in

The replica is based on Adafruit’s Arduino-compatible Feather microcontroller and its NeoPixel LED strip. The company also designed 3D models of the sword’s blades and handle; you’ll need to print the former with a translucent material so the light from the NeoPixel will shine through. Adafruit’s Bluetooth app will let you change the NeoPixel’s color and mode.

Lunge to Adafruit’s website for the guide.

$100k Gets You A Life-Size T-Rex Skeleton Replica

Screen Shot 2014-11-03 at 10.24.03 PM

How nice it must be to have the kind of money where you can go “Hey, honey, you wanna get this T-Rex skeleton? I think it would look great in the playroom.” And then you pick up the phone, call Hammacher Schlemmer and have a team of “Product Specialists” assist you in the purchase of a 40 foot long replica of the baddest dino that roamed the earth. That’s the kind of money I’d like to have: T-Rex skeleton replica money…

Spanning 40′ from tail to snout, this is the life-size replica fossil skeleton of Stan, a Tyrannosaur first unearthed in South Dakota’s Black Hills in 1992. Found in a disarticulated state (each bone was separated from the others), Stan’s skeleton fossilized over millions of years with little-to-no distortion or crushing, making him the most complete (190 bones) male Tyrannosaurus rex ever found. This museum-quality replica is expertly crafted using GI-1000-grade silicone molds that impart stunning, authentic detail to the polyurethane resin casts that faithfully preserve the healed injuries Stan suffered during life, including a broken neck and ribs as well as puncture wounds in his skull and lower jaw.

As part of your purchase, you will have a team of people come to your residence (or wherever you want to put this thing) and assemble it, as well as position it in any “anatomically possible pose” for your convenience.

Oh and if you can’t swing $100k, there’s a life-size T-Rex skull for $9k. It’s sort of a consolation prize, although we gotta tell you, if you can swing $9k on a dino head, you’re doing pretty ok for yourself too.

This Star Trek Phaser Doubles As A TV Remote

star-trek-phaser

It’s one thing to buy a novelty replica of a TV prop. It’s quite another to buy a Star Trek Phaser so faithful to the original that it was made by 3D scanning the last remaining prop from the TV series. It’s also fully licensed by CBS, and doubles as a programmable infrared remote with which you can control your TV, iPod docks and many other gadgets. And when it’s not changing channels, this Phaser plays a wide range of original sound effects from the series. It also vibrates and lights up each time it’s “fired”, and features a removable side door to reveal an illuminated dilithium crystal power cell. It’s made from a matte nickel plated die cast, and comes with a museum-quality metal stand, with hidden magnetic catch. The carrying case is made from rugged ABS plastic, printed with a blank name plate ready for you to make it your own. The only thing you might have trouble doing is vaporizing rocks and alien life forms with it, but at £119.95 (roughly $200), we’d say that’s good enough.

So There’s This: BloodRayne ArmBlade Replica

arm-blade

We can’t really think of anything useful you might want to do with the above ArmBlade, but that shouldn’t stop you from buying it. After all, if you only ever bought stuff that’s actually useful, you’d likely have a lot more money in your bank account. Measuring a healthy 17-3/8-inch long, the thing is made from one piece of hard-anodized black stainless steel. Along with the blade, you get all the other hardware needed to assemble it, including the grip and forearm strap. The best part, perhaps, is that you’ll have to pay all of $18 to own it. Which, all things considered, isn’t a whole bunch of money to spend on something not entirely useful.
