Apple’s Newest iMac Sports the 1st 5K Display Ever

27-inch iMac Display 5K resolution

For once, Apple has done something truly revolutionary, in a department where we don’t see changes that often. The 4K resolution hasn’t even become a standard, yet, and the Cupertino company has already launched an iMac with a 5K display.

The 5K resolution wasn’t even a thing before Apple unveiled the new generation of iMac desktop computers. Retina displays, which are characterized by extremely high resolutions, represent Apple’s own version of anti-aliasing. With the new 5,120 x 2,880, which is five times the number of pixels of a 1080p display, the new iMac screen sets a new standard. Like it or not, Apple’s competitors will have a hard time beating this.

I generally think that Cupertino doesn’t bring anything new to the table, as its mobile devices are outperformed by the competition even before being launched. However, in the case of the new iMac display, I couldn’t possibly say that it doesn’t represent an innovation.

Another innovation is represented by the fact that the new 5K Retina Display requires less energy than the previous generation, despite being better.

Of course, to make sure that everything is displayed smoothly, Apple also upgraded the CPU and the GPU. There are multiple configuration options, as well, people being able to choose between a 3.5GHz Intel Core i5 quad-core and a Core i7 CPU running at 4GHz. The company has ditched Nvidia GPUs and went for AMD Radeon R9 M290X and M295X GPUs, which is a bit peculiar, as Nvidia’s 970M and 980M GPUs surpass these, both in terms of performance and energy consumption.

Apple has made changes in other departments, as well, if not in terms of size, then in terms of performance. For example, the 1TB HDD that used to come with non-Retina iMacs has been replaced with a 1TB Fusion Drive, which is a lot faster than conventional drives, as it combines a HDD with a NAND flash drive.

Anyone wanting to buy the new iMac with Retina Display will have to get $2,500 out of their pockets. For the sake of comparison, Dell’s upcoming UltraSharp 27 Ultra HD 5K Monitor will sell for $2,499, despite not including a computer inside it. That means that for just one dollar you can get 1TB of storage, a powerful CPU and a GPU that can handle with no problem any of today’s games.
