This tiny Micro SD card organizer is a blast from the 90s

Before CDs and DVDs revolutionized physical media in the 1990s, people mostly used floppy disks — little square pucks containing less than 2.8 megabytes of storage. If you collected a lot of floppy disks, for instance, the original release of DOOM (which released across four 3.5 inch floppy disks), you needed a place to put them. Back then, that meant keeping your disk collection in a whole bunch of beige boxes with tinted plastic coverings, locked shut with a simple mechanism.

Apparently, that design — despite its relative clunkiness and odd fit for modern offices — is nostalgic to collectors of modern physical media devices like Micro SD cards and Nintendo Switch cartridges, and, as a result, independent artist Trevor Flowers has designed his own tributes to the classic floppy disk holder design. Calling it the “Smol Floppy Disk Organizer for Micro SD Cards” on his Gumroad page, this adorable replica of days gone by can fit on any desk surface thanks to its near-microscopic size.

Designer: Trevor Flowers

“Back when floppies were new we kept them safe in somewhat terrible plastic bins,” says Flowers in the description of his Micro SD card holder.

“Now that micro SD cards can hold thousands of times more data they’re what we use and what we lose! Because, smol. So, here’s a little throwback to the floppy organizer but sized for micro SD cards. I used double-sided tape to stick mine to the top of my PC monitor because I’d lose it on my messy desk.”

The Smol Floppy Disk Organizer for Micro SD Cards is available to purchase on Flowers’ official Gumroad page for $22, though it seems like supplies are limited as only 37 units remain. The same is true of his Smol Floppy Disk Organizer for Switch Cartridges, of which only 8 remain as I write this article. It’s unclear whether more will be constructed, though it’s worth noting the build is quite cute and may even have mass-market appeal for collectors.

Smol Floppy Disk Organizers aren’t the only unique retro design Flowers has come up with. On his page, you can find other bespoke (and somewhat larger) tributes to the TRS-80 Model III and the Osborne One.

A Piggy Bank for the currency of the information age!

piggy_bank_1

Taking possibly the most iconic representation of ‘storage’ and turning it into a modern-day product that acts as a storage unit of sorts, the Ciao Piggy Bank by Riccardo Cambò is a piggy bank not for money, but rather for the currency of the information age… data.

The Ciao Piggy Bank comes with a slot on the back that isn’t for banknotes and coins, but rather for SD cards. Place the card inside and the piggy bank, a wireless SSD, copies and stores all your data from the SD card without needing you to connect it to your computer, copy files, create a folder, and paste them. Just as simple as swiping a card, the Ciao backs up your SD card for you, allowing you to clear the data from it and reuse it. The pig-shaped wireless SSD lets you access your data either wirelessly, or via a rather cute, pigtail shaped USB cable that connects it to your system. With a single button interface and just a series of LED indicators that show you transfer progress, battery, and overall storage, the Ciao lets you back data up just as easily as dropping a quarter into a ceramic piggy bank. The Ciao comes in 60gb, 120gb, and even 500gb variants, and is perhaps the most beautiful representation of files and data as something of value, much like money… and it isn’t just the metaphor that’s beautiful, it’s the fact that the Ciao is an incredibly useful and functional product that lets you back data up and free SD cards for use later!

Dogs Trained to Sniff out Storage Devices: Scentsitive Data

The security dog training firm Tactical Detection K9 has an unorthodox and cute way to find all the thumb drives and microSD cards you’ve misplaced. The company recently started training dogs that can find storage devices by scent.

Speaking with IB Times, Tactical Detection K9 said it had scientists isolate “a common by-product” that is present in storage devices such as hard drives, SD cards and even iPads. The dogs are then trained to recognize the scent of that substance, a process that could take 8 months to a year.

Bear, one of Tactical Detection K9’s electronic detection dogs, has helped law enforcement officers in five investigations, including the recent search of former Subway spokesman Jared Fogle’s residence. Fox 59 got to see a demo of Bear’s abilities:

Tactical Detection K9 is selling Bear and his buddies for $9,000 (USD), which includes training the dog’s new handler. On second thought, my 16GB flash drive can be in Mars for all I care.
