This shirt was made from the same fabric used by Egyptians to wrap mummies… and it’ll last decades

If you ever looked at a nettle (those plants that give you a nasty sting) and thought – hey, this could make a great fabric for clothing people, chances are you’re either Egyptian, or you’re someone at Vollebak. The London-based alternative clothing brand is known for working with kinds of materials that you’d never find at your local GAP or Forever 21. After having somehow integrated materials like ceramics, carbon fiber, kevlar, and even Dyneema into their clothes, the company’s now managed to find a way to turn the hostile nettle into a soothing, comfortable fabric that you can wear for decades… centuries even. Although they weren’t the first.

Five thousand years ago, the Egyptians developed a method to turn the nettle into fibers that could be woven into a durable, comfortable fabric that resists heat and humidity well. They used the same fabric to wrap their mummies, and those threads lasted 5 millennia so there’s no reason Vollebak’s shirt won’t. The fabric, now commonly known as ‘ramie’ is now mostly seen being used to build parachutes… and it’s the primary fabric used in Vollebak’s Off Grid shirt.

Designer: Vollebak

The Off Grid shirt, as its name suggests, was built to live off the grid. It uses materials that existed long before the grid was even a fleeting thought, which works because these shirts were built to withstand ‘unconventional living’…

The Off Grid shirt works rather well in heat and humidity, and just by virtue of its fabric, has these unique wrinkles on the shirt that contribute to its character. The shirt uses a proprietary blend of ramie (nettle fabric) and Pima cotton. As a fiber, ramie is incredibly resistant to bacteria and mildew, and unlike other fibers, grows stronger with time (it’s no wonder the mummies look so good, eh?) Pima cotton, on the other hand, gives the shirt its softness and keeps it light. The blend of cotton also wicks moisture rather well and dries off pretty fast, making it perfect for humidity.

Vollebak doesn’t stop there, though. The shirts, once stitched, are dyed with either leftover Japanese turnips, or with blueberries. “The Turnip edition is dyed using red turnips from the Japanese mountain town of Kiso. Despite their red outer skin, the turnips have white flesh which produces a light-colored dye,” say Nick and Steve Tidball, the twin founders of Vollebak. “The turnips we use are excess ones left over from the production of sunki pickles. Rather than let them go to waste we use them to make 90% of the dye for the shirt”, they add.

While the off-white variant of the Off Grid shirt uses turnips, its slightly darker, almost mauve-colored sibling uses unwanted blueberries from a Japanese fruit farm in the Nara prefecture. “Some blueberries don’t make the cut during harvesting because they’re damaged or oddly shaped. So rather than let them go to waste we use them to make 90% of the dye for the shirt”, Steve and Nick mention.

Once woven and dyed, the shirts are finished using Ōmi sarashi, an ancient Japanese kneading technique that helps make the fabric soft yet rugged, and gives them their signature wrinkled pattern. Steve and Nick don’t quite mention how long the Off Grid shirt is supposed to last, but given their track record of making garments that can last well over a hundred years, it’s fair to assume these shirts should easily be in your wardrobe for the rest of your life!

Each Off Grid shirt comes with two large chest pockets for carrying your belongings in.

Vollebak’s new 100% biodegradable T-Shirt is made from plants and algae!

Another new month, another new experimental garment from the inimitable creative apparel powerhouse that is VolleBak… except this time they haven’t made a hoodie that glows, or can be worn on Mars, or is made from graphene or carbon fiber. This time they’ve created a garment that doesn’t consciously last thousands of years, but rather, turns into worm-food when you’re done wearing it. VolleBak’s bizzarely eco-friendly shirt uses a never-seen-before one-of-a-kind yarn made from pulped eucalyptus, spruce, and beech, along with a print that’s created using the world’s most abundant flora… algae!

“The only thing different about this T-shirt is that it grew in soil and water, and that’s where it’s designed to end up too. All you need to do is remember to compost it at the end of its life. Here it will biodegrade with them, turn into soil, and help new plants to grow,” explains Vollebak co-founder, Steve Tidball. The yarn is produced using wood-pulp from sustainably managed forests, while the green print on it is derived from algae grown in a bioreactor, before being passed through a filter and dried to form a powder that’s turned into ink. Since algae can’t survive outside water, the print technically isn’t ‘living’, and will fade over time like a patina, making each shirt unique. When you’re done wearing the shirt, just bury it underground and it completely biodegrades in 12 weeks, turning into compost that can then grow new trees. Sustainable fashion, y’all!

VolleBak’s anti-abrasion tee shirt is made from real carbon fiber

I assume somewhere in VolleBak’s headquarters lies a massive whiteboard with the words “WHY NOT” scrawled on it, because if the past few months have been any indication, the company’s product launches have been getting progressively stranger but at the same time, exciting just because we’re witnessing one of the most avant-garde movements in apparel and fashion design.

After making kevlar, iridescent, and graphene jackets, VolleBak’s latest uses a material found exclusively in jet engines, missile housings, and supercars. I’m talking about Carbon Fiber, the material that’s lighter than aluminum and stronger than steel. VolleBak’s Carbon Fiber shirt comes with a price tag of $110 which seems pretty reasonable considering it comes made with woven strands of carbon fiber in it. Designed to be worn close to the skin, the material is breathable, lightweight, and wicks moisture incredibly well.

If you’re like me, you’re probably wondering why (and also how) would VolleBak integrate carbon fibers into fashion. Carbon Fiber is known for its incredible strength, which lends its properties to the shirt, making it practically abrasion-proof. Designed to last much longer than any traditional tee shirt, even in the most demanding of scenarios, the Carbon Fiber tee shirt will not scuff, rip, shred, or tear if you accidentally fall off a bike or slip while trekking or bump your shoulder against a tree’s rough bark. In extension, the fabric even protects your skin, preventing damage to itself as well as you. The fabric itself comes made from a yarn that contains thousands of intertwined individual carbon fibers. While you’d expect these fibers to be incredibly tough, the fabric also comprises 36% elastane, giving it strength but also a 4-way stretch, making the VolleBak Carbon Fiber Tee look like just about any other tee shirt you’ve seen, but behave unlike any other. Why not, eh?

Minor League Baseball Team to Wear Mister Rogers’ Cardigan Jerseys

As a child of the ’80s, I have watched lots and lots of episodes of Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood, and the thing I always wanted most was one of those little trolley cars to carry stuff around my house for me. The show creeped me out a bit, and did nothing to make cardigans more popular.

That zip-up sweater was the childrens’ show host’s most iconic bit of apparel, and now a minor league baseball team will soon wear jerseys that look like one of his famed cardigans. South Bend, Indiana’s Class-A farm team the South Bend Cubs will wear the jerseys on August 12th.

The fancy jerseys will be trotted out in recognition of the 50th anniversary of the show that taught kids around the world to be good neighbors and to wear house shoes. Clips from the series will be shown on video boards throughout the game as well. There will be no jersey replicas sold to the public, but you can bid on the game-worn shirts in an auction to benefit the local PBS station.

Rule #1: Don’t Talk About this Fight Club Shirt

Fight Club is one of those classic movies that you have to watch more than once to really take it all in. There are lots of hints that all isn’t what it seems, but it still is quite shocking how it all turns out. Fans of the film might want to grab this Fight Club woven button up shirt.

It has a black background with a print of the Fight Club soap on it. Unlike the soap, the shirt isn’t made from liposuctioned human fat – it’s made from cotton.

You can get the shirt at ThinkGeek for $39.99(USD). Just don’t blow up your house trying to order.

AT-AT vs. Banana Peel Shirt Highlights Glaring Imperial Design Flaw

I’ve often wondered what happened to the Imperial engineer who designed the AT-AT. I mean, as you build this massive walking battleship of death and come to find out on its first deployment, all it takes to destroy it is some rope. I’d wager Darth Vader tracked the designer down and force crushed his gonads to a pulp.

This is one of the coolest Star Wars shirts I have seen in a long time and I need it. It has an AT-AT walking obliviously to its doom. That banana peel is going to wreck that thing like Mario Kart.

You can get one at ThinkGeek for $19.99(USD) in sizes up to 3XL. It’s made from cotton so it might shrink, but it’s still awesome.

Firefly Serenity Button-Down is Business from a Distance, Party up close

There are plenty of office drones out there who wear weird socks as a way to stick it to the man who forces them to dress a certain way at work. If you don’t like funky patterns on your socks, but you want to strike back at office dress code, this is your shirt. It’s a Firefly Serenity button-down, and from a distance your boss will think you are wearing the business casual attire you are supposed to.

Up close though, the black shirt has white outlines of the Serenity from Firefly all over it. It’s both geeky and technically business casual so you aren’t breaking the rules. I mean we all want to stick it to the man, only we want to do it without getting written up or fired because we need that money for beer and bacon.

The shirt will cost you $49.99(USD) at ThinkGeek – which isn’t cheap – but all your geeky friends will love it. It’s long-sleeved for cooler months, or for people who think short-sleeve button-down shirts are strictly for 6-year-olds.

At Last, a Garter Belt for Your Shirt

You know how it is, guys. Your dress shirt slowly un-tucks itself out of your pants over the course of a few hours and you have to constantly readjust it. Well, the answer is garter belts for men. If J. Edgar Hoover did it for pleasure, you can do it to keep your shirt tucked in.

The NT T-Holder is designed to hold down your shirt so it never comes out of your pants. You’ll be able to move around freely, stretch, and do all of the things that you would normally be able to do, all without having to re-tuck.

A pair of NT T-Holders will set you back $35(USD). Come on. Aren’t you secure in your manhood?
