Top 10 accessories you need to make a cool gaming room

As we near the final days of 2023 (known in some circles as either one of the best years in gaming history or one of the worst) the massively popular gaming hobby shows no sign of slowing down in terms of public reception. In fact, Statista predicts that 3.1 billion humans (a little less than half of the current global population) will regularly play games as a hobby by 2027.

But can you truly call yourself a “gamer” if you don’t spend at least a little time and money decking out the room you play games in? I’m half-joking; of course there is no specific “correct” way to play video games in your own house. But there are quite a few gadgets and cool decorative items you can use to make any gaming room more impressive.

Whether you’re a PC gamer who wants an extra edge, a racing game enthusiast who wants maximum immersion, or if you simply want to make your entertainment center a little more comfortable, you’ve got a number of options at your fingertips to trick out your gaming room to match your style. To help you out, I’ve come up with a list of gaming room accessories that immediately come to mind, including a few mainstays I’ve used in my personal gaming setup for years.

1. Playseat Trophy – Logitech G Edition

Playseat is one of the best racing chair brands you can buy from, and this collaboration between Playseat and Logitech (called the Playseat Trophy – Logitech G Edition) is probably the best option for an all-rounder racing chair with direct drive wheel support plus all the other bells and whistles you’ll need for maximum immersion. It’s also advertised to naturally conform to the shape of your body thanks to Playseat’s patented ActiFit material, so you can theoretically sit inside of it and race for hours without developing aches and cramps. It’s a little expensive at an MSRP of $599.00, but it’s hard to find a decent racing chair below that price range, and critics love the mix of features and high build quality.

2. Logitech G Pro Racing Wheel and Pro Racing Pedals

If you’re going to invest in a high-quality direct drive racing wheel and accompanying racing pedals, you’re going to want to go straight to the best one on the market. That’s the Logitech G Pro Racing Wheel and Pro Racing Pedals bundled together for around $1348.99 – which, yes, is expensive, but if you’re in the market for a high-end racing setup anyway, is money even an object? GamesRadar+ had some especially kind words for the Logitech G Pro Racing Wheel, highlighting the powerful force feedback, robust customization options, and advanced features throughout the design. It’s also widely known as one of the sturdiest racing wheels around, with IGN’s slightly less enthusiastic review still giving credit to Logitech for delivering on its commitment to quality.

3. Cololight Smart RGB LED Gaming Lights

Hexagonal LED wall lights are a popular and stylish way to decorate any gaming area or entertainment center, and I find the Cololight COLO PLAY Ultimate Fusion Set offers the best price balance for the widest range of features as it’s designed around PC gaming setups – letting you sync a wide range of lighting systems (like Razer Chroma) with Cololight’s hex lighting pieces. The included COLO PLAY light switch sits comfortably on your desk and is especially useful to quickly cycle your hex lights and PC lights by simply twisting a knob. Not only that, but the company pledges to plant a tree with every purchase made on its online store, which is a nice gesture on its own.

4. Secretlab MAGNUS Pro

Sit-stand desks are an excellent centerpiece for any modern PC gaming setup, and one of the best-rated desks in 2023 is the Secretlab MAGNUS Pro. It’s spacious, sturdy, and has a number of quality-of-life features like electric height control, a cable management system, and even a little headphone hook for added convenience. It also contains a rather impressive integrated RGB lighting system, making for a unique and stylish design. Its height is configurable via an array of buttons conveniently accessible on its front panel. It’s expensive, but the reviews are unanimously (overwhelmingly) positive, with GamesRadar+ calling it the best sit-stand desk they’ve ever tested when they reviewed it in February 2023.

5. NEWTRAL MagicH Ultra Adaptive Support Home Office Chair

I personally dislike most gaming chairs I’ve ever sat in. I’m a firm believer that the secret to buying a proper gaming chair is avoiding them altogether, and instead investing in a really nice office chair. After all, office chairs are designed to be sat in for at least eight hours a day by office workers of all builds and ages. Their most critical function is comfort, and the NEWTRAL MagicH seems to push the boundaries on just how comfortable an office chair can be. This Kickstarter-backed office chair is advertised to provide full support in any sitting position, whether you’re sitting upright or reclining back. As someone who spends a lot of time sitting down in the same computer chair all day for both work and gaming, I’ve been looking for something that adapts to my needs throughout the day, and the NEWTRAL MagicH is on the tippy top of my wish list.

6. Logitech G560 LIGHTSYNC PC Gaming Speakers

I’ve been using these Logitech G560 2.1 PC speakers for years now, and I still recommend them as a compulsory purchase for any modern PC gaming setup. Their sound quality is decent enough – these aren’t going to compete against a proper 5.1 or 7.1 surround sound system, or even a nice pair of monitors. However, for the $200 MSRP, you’re getting a powerful 2.1 PC speaker system that also provides a ton of visual ambiance. These speakers double as LED lights that beam colors onto the surface behind your monitor. They can be configured via Logitech G HUB software to mimic the visuals on your monitor itself, creating a dynamic backlighting experience that heightens immersion when playing games and watching movies. Just remember to turn up the brightness to max and boost the subwoofer in the acoustics menu, otherwise these will be a lot darker and a lot quieter than advertised.

7. Samsung Odyssey OLED G9

The most stylish gaming PC monitor you can currently buy is the 49-inch Samsung Odyssey OLED G9, which looks incredible at 5120×1440 resolution with 1800R curvature. The Odyssey OLED G9’s integrated HDR 400 support should produce crisp and rich colors thanks to its OLED display, which doesn’t rely on a backlight and therefore negates the need for local dimming to generate deep blacks and bright whites. It’s designed for gamers first and foremost, running at up to 240Hz refresh rates with built-in support for AMD Freesync. Reviewers especially like how it produces near-instant response times, giving off no perceptible input lag. From a purely aesthetic perspective, the minimalistic design of its stand and the integrated RGB backlights make the Samsung Odyssey OLED G9 a centerpiece rather than an eyesore.

8. Xbox Mini Fridge

The Xbox Mini Fridge is admittedly a bit goofy, but then again, it’s not a “real” fridge. What was originally a meme product designed to build up hype for the then-new Xbox Series X in 2020, is still a genuinely cool item to have sitting around in any gaming room. It’s small, with a sleek black chassis and bright green inlay that mimics the design of a proper Xbox Series X. But its best feature is the integrated green LED that gives it its visual flair. Besides, it’s perfect to store a few cans of soda in since it is, after all, classified as a mini fridge.

9. Govee DreamView T1 Pro TV Backlights

Console gaming is way more immersive with a dynamic TV backlight that beams colors onto the surface behind your TV to match the visuals on-screen. Thanks to the Govee DreamView T1 Pro, you can light up your entire entertainment center across three different zones. It’s all controlled by a single camera placed on top of (or below!) your television screen, which can interpret the colors on the screen into information which tells the lighting zones which color to display at any moment. In action, the wide range of lights and colors displaying across the entire entertainment center makes games and movies come to life.

10. PDP REALMz Gaming Controllers for Xbox/PC/Nintendo Switch

Unique gaming controllers are a great way to personalize your gaming room, and thanks to the PDP REALMz diorama controllers for Xbox, PC, and Nintendo Switch, you can impress your friends with artsy designs that feature popular characters and backdrops. What really stands out here, though, is their transparent design, which makes them look retro. These are a great gift for any gamer in your life, or you can decorate your own gaming room with the wide assortment of styles and colors offered by PDP REALMz.

5 ways to make your working space cozy cardio friendly

Health experts generally recommend regular sessions of low-intensity exercise to keep a steady routine going, especially for individuals who don’t already spend a lot of time working out in the gym or playing sports. Luckily, the widespread emergence of home offices has given way to many creative methods of staying fit while staying largely in one place.

One of my personal favorites has been VR fitness; specifically, putting a Meta Quest 2 on my head, hopping on the treadmill, and walking through neighborhoods in distant cities like New York City and Tokyo via YouTube VR.

Now, thanks to TikToker Hope Zuckerbrow, a new term, coined “cozy cardio”, has rapidly become popularized across the world since her July 23 TikTok video went viral. The hybridization of home office workspace and home gym is ingenious, especially for those who do their best work while in motion – or, simply, those who struggle to stay in their seat – and now it’s taking the media by storm. There are five essential products you’ll need to get started if you want to make your home office cozy cardio friendly: a standing desk, a tiny foldable treadmill, a coffee maker, comfortable socks for a long day of walking, and a nice essential oil diffuser. Here are the ones I’d choose if I were shopping for a cozy cardio office today.

1. CORSAIR Platform:6 Sit-stand Desk

The CORSAIR Platform:6 Sit-stand Desk is a gorgeous-looking adjustable desk that contains a litany of quality of life features like two monitor mounts, four built-in power outlets, a cable management system, and a spacious surface that is perfect for displaying a full desktop build. It’s not available yet, but it’s hopeful that we’ll see more information about it in the fourth quarter of 2023. Still, if I were shopping for a new desk, I’d wait for the CORSAIR Platform:6 to become available, because it’s almost exactly what I’m looking for – even if I don’t end up putting a walking pad underneath it.

2. WalkingPad C2

Second to the standing desk, the WalkingPad is a necessary part of any cozy cardio setup. At least, any cozy cardio setup that involves exercising while you work at your desk. We had plenty of nice things to say about WalkingPad when it was in Kickstarter, and now that it’s all grown up, it’s still one of the best mini-treadmill designers you can find on the market. You can’t really go wrong with any of the products listed on the WalkingPad store, but the WalkingPad C2 is a winner for one reason: it can fold up, making it easy to put away when you’re finished exercising at your desk.

3. FinalPress V2 coffee maker

Your cozy cardio session wouldn’t be complete without a nice jolt of caffeine to wake you up. The smell of fresh coffee emanating throughout your home is part of what makes the whole experience “cozy”, and there are plenty of great coffee makers in the market. None of them are as portable as the FinalPress V2, however, which you can practically keep on your desk at all times. The compact and visually-appealing mini coffee maker uses an infusion process – similarly to how a teabag works – to make hot (or cold!) coffee inside of the very same container you intend to drink it out of. To make it work, simply pour in up to 35 grams of ground coffee, close the FinalPress capsule, and stir it directly into hot or cold water.

4. HercSocks 5.0

You’re going to want some nice socks to keep your feet comfortable in all conditions. If you plan to walk for a long period of time on your WalkingPad, you’ll want sturdily built socks that also keep your feet warm and comfortable. That’s where the HercSocks 5.0 come in. These socks are rated to keep feet insulated, protected, and comfortable on any terrain – even keeping your feet dry if you jump into a puddle. I’d make these part of my cozy cardio routine simply because I’m too lazy to put shoes on every time I want to hop on the treadmill in real life; why not maximize the coziness by wearing socks that also double as walking shoes?

5. Lei Battery-Free Aroma Diffuser

Essential oils can create a lovely atmosphere inside of any home office, and you can even use certain scents (like orange or peppermint) to ease into a focused state of mind – which is great when you’re trying to work while also doing something a bit more physically active, like walking on a walking pad. Most essential oil diffusers rely on batteries or plug directly into the wall, but if you want a stylish and somewhat rustic non-electric alternative to those, you can check out the gorgeous Lei Battery-Free Aroma Diffuser. We love the aesthetic appeal of its all-black body and candle.

CORSAIR Platfrom:6 Modular Computer Desk is the ultimate customizable workstation for gamers, streamers and content creators

CORSAIR might have just created the most insane standing desk you could wish for. Yes, a modular desk tailored for PC gamers, digital artists, content creators, streamers and professionals from all walks of life who spend a lot of time in front of the screen.

The elegant accessory revealed during Gamescom, instantly peps up any work-from-home setup or for that matter even an office setup if your organization is generous enough. Called the CORSAIR Platfrom:6 Modular Computer Desk, it’s designed to leave nothing to chance. Something right out of the Hasbro universe.

Designer: CORSAIR

The desk comes with a range of attachments including RapidRoute cable management system, monitor arms, in-desk storage cubby with built-in USB Type-A and Type-C ports. The addition of more accessories to the desk is possible with the modular rail system, so you’ll never be left longing for more. That’s what we presume comes with the base model of the desk.

Creator Edition offers even more like the motorized height adjustment and the option to map height presets for particular times of the day. This version also includes 30 x 70cm side extensions for a wider work area, hanging pegboards for headphones, gaming controllers, or anything else you can hook on. Since the desk supports Elagto’s multi-mount range accessories, you can attach cameras, lights and microphones too.

Clearly, Platfrom:6 offers more than any other desk on the market and it’s like a dream come true for streamers who always crib for more space and option to expand their accessory set. In fact, this could be the last PC desk you’d buy for a long time to come, as it even offers the users the ability to 3D print custom accessories to be used with the desk!

If already you’re excited, the Platform:6 desk backed by five years of warranty is coming in the fourth quarter of this year for an undisclosed price. What’s known, so far indicates the desk will come in black laminate or dark walnut-stained rubberwood.

Monitor and keyboard contraption lets you work standing or sitting

Now that we’re almost back to “normal” or at least some semblance of it, it looks like a lot of the world’s workforce is once again sitting in front of their desk. This means that we spend around 6-8 hours a day in a sedentary position since we’re working in front of screens. One thing that has been suggested over time is to stand up every once in a while and walk around or at least stand up while working. A standing desk is one of the useful things that you can get but if you don’t want to buy a new one, there are some alternatives available out there.

Designer: Humanscale Design Studio

There are accessories now available that can turn your regular working desk into a standing desk when you need it. The QuickStand Lite is one of those that you can get, provided you have the budget for your home office or your workplace can get one for you. Basically, it’s a monitor stand that you can adjust to the height that you want if you’re standing. It also has an arm where you can place your keyboard so you don’t need to crouch or bend when you need to type things.

The stand has a counterbalance so you can lower or raise the device depending on what height you need it to be. You will also be able to adjust the monitor height and the keyboard platform independent of each other so you’ll be able to be comfortable with the eye levels and arm levels of your workspace. This is also pretty useful for those that use large monitors for their dual or maybe even multiple screens.

While the price is pretty steep for something that you’ll just add to your existing desk, it is pretty useful and buying it can force you to do some standing work every once in a while. It may also be less expensive than buying a separate desk for your standing needs.

Multifunctional standing desk concept keeps you from overworking yourself

The so-called work-life balance has always been a difficult feat to achieve, but the events of the past three years have muddled the boundaries even further. Although people have started returning to offices, whether fully or partially, they have also become more acutely aware of the unhealthy environments they work in, especially when it comes to hours and hours of continuous work. People have started to appreciate the need to put some limits on their work time, even if they’re in the office, to take a break and refresh themselves in order to boost their productivity. Most office furniture, however, is focused solely on work efficiency, but this work desk concept tries to implement some boundaries that encourage people to work in bite-sized chunks and to take a break every now and then.

Designers: Gwangho Lee, Nara Jung, Yeowon Yoon

It’s not really a surprise that desks are designed to help you be productive with work or study. They have plenty of room for all your tools and materials, storage for files and knickknacks, and a height that is conducive for sitting down comfortably to be able to work for hours on end. That might definitely be great for productivity but terrible for the person’s long-term well-being, especially in today’s fast-paced, high-stress work environments.

The Boundary desk concept design tries to create a new workspace that actually discourages people from working too much and invites them to take breaks in whatever form necessary. The very size and height of the desk itself limit what can be done since you’ll have limited space for anything but the essentials. Its height is more suited for standing, though it can also be paired with a tall drafting chair for comfort.

Boundary also has parts that are conducive for “refreshing” one’s self from time to time. There’s an area to place drinks that’s hidden under a Rail Tray that can be moved across the desk to the position that you prefer. One side of the desk extends a bit further and can be used as a bar for doing stretching exercises in between work sessions. There’s a gap between the desk’s legs for your bag or briefcase, making it easy to grab it and go in a flash.

Everything about the Boundary desk is designed to encourage people to be agile, which can be good not only for their well-being but, ironic as it might sound, for their productivity as well. Of course, it won’t do well as a main office desk, and Boundary is more suited for new spaces where casual work can be done in a more relaxed environment. In a way, Boundary represents the post-pandemic way of thinking about work in the office, a mentality that puts an even bigger focus on the worker’s overall health rather than just their productivity.

Standing table for collaboration unfolds into a picnic table for fun

Different tables have different uses depending on their design. A dining table needs to be low enough to accommodate comfortable seating, while a standing table encourages more dynamic conversations with the lack of chairs. In most cases, you have to choose the right type of table for the right purpose, but there might be instances where you wish a single one could fulfill multiple functions instead. There might be a constraint on spaces, or you might prefer a more agile and adaptable environment. Whatever the reason might be, this ingenious transforming table offers those two functions in one, providing a high table for standing meetings and a picnic table for four for more informal gatherings.

Designer: Bert Masselus

Designing a foldable table with built-in seats isn’t exactly a walk in the park. Compared to a regular table with separate chairs, such a piece of furniture would need to tackle different areas of concern all at once. Not only does it need to actually fold and unfold properly, it also needs to be stable and comfortable. There’s also the matter of visual appeal, which is even harder to pull off when considering a table that changes forms depending on the situation.

That’s the kind of feat that the JoinTable accomplishes with aplomb. Sporting an industrial aesthetic with its powder-coated stainless steel and aluminum construction, the transforming table offers an environment that can quickly adapt to the owners’ needs. On the one hand, it functions as a standing table that creates an atmosphere conducive to quick discussions and meetings. On the other hand, it can also be a place for more relaxed conversations, with friends or families lounging over meals. You could, of course, also have only one side of the table opened with the two seats, leaving the other side free for wood, work, or other things.

JoinTable is deceptively simple, belying its nontrivial mechanism and difficult manufacturing. The top of the standing table opens up in the middle and folds backward to reveal benches that can seat two people on each side. Even in this opened form, the table retains a stable center of gravity. The folding mechanism is also rigid enough to hold the seats in place and keep them from completely folding backward after a certain point.

This transforming table design is meant to be used both indoors and outdoors, creating areas for collaboration and enjoyment without taking up too much space. There is, however, also a design that is practically limited for indoor use, or at least in places with plenty of walls. This “two-seater” configuration consists of only half the JoinTable attached to a wall, offering a temporary space for working or enjoying a sip of coffee or both, whether by your lonesome self or with a partner.

This convertible standing desk doesn’t use motors to change forms

With this more mechanical standing desk concept, you can enjoy the benefits of a healthier working lifestyle without breaking your back or your bank.

Our reliance on computers to get work done these days has translated to spending hours sitting in front of a computer. That’s not even considering some of the recreational activities that we do on our desks, at least for gamers or those who prefer watching videos on their laptops and desktops. Health experts naturally discourage such a sedentary lifestyle and advise people to stand up and walk every so often. Some even recommend standing desks so you can actually work without sitting down at all. Standing desks aren’t uncommon nowadays, but not everyone that should use them can actually afford most of the options available. This concept, however, defies convention and uses a simple mechanism to switch between a regular desk and a standing desk, eschewing the electronics and motors that make these desks more expensive than they should be.

Designer: Simonas Palovis

It is just as bad to spend all your time standing up as it is sitting down. You do need to give your legs a break or have them moving once in a while rather than staying stationary. It’s for this reason that many standing desks are designed to raise or lower their tabletops to switch between different heights and configurations. More often than not, those use motors, gears, and electronics to do the work rather than have you manually adjust the levels.

That’s definitely more convenient and removes the hesitation some people might have with standing desks, encouraging them to use the feature more often. It also makes the desks more complicated and more expensive than a normal desk. There’s also the problem of becoming completely unusable when the motorized system breaks and leaves you stuck in either mode until you get it repaired. Presuming it can be repaired at all.

The Axis concept removes all those variables while still keeping a simple system to switch from a regular desk to a standing desk and back again. Specifically, it uses a simple axis mechanism, hence the name, to move the larger desk surface up or down as needed. As a bonus, part of the desk actually remains in position and is a good place to put items you’re less likely to move, like supplies or desk organizers. It can even be a temporary bookshelf that stays in the back of your desk when sitting or beneath the table when standing.

The simplicity of this system means that manufacturers can keep the number of parts and materials down to a minimum, driving down the cost of the desk itself. It also means that more sustainable materials can be used since it has no need for electronics or even plastics. Replacement parts could be easier to purchase, too, presuming owners themselves can’t make those out of standardized designs. That goes a long way in prolonging the life of the desk, which isn’t always what many standing desks deliver.
