EDITOR'S QUOTE:

Beatbot AquaSense Pro redefines pool cleaning with AI, efficient floor-to-surface cleaning, and water clarification, becoming a dream for pool owners.

Swimming pool cleaners have been around for a long time, but those available from Leslie’s Pool Supply or even the robotic ones on Amazon lack technological innovation, making them no better than traditional pool cleaners. These traditional pool cleaners, often known as suction-side or pressure-side cleaners, operate more simply than their robotic counterparts. They’re costly and need to be connected to a hose that hooks up to the pool’s existing filtration system.

This review explores why smart robotic pool cleaners, particularly the Beatbot AquaSense Pro, are the future. As a spoiler, Yanko Design named it one of the best consumer products at CES 2024.

Designer: Beatbot

Aesthetics

The Beatbot AquaSense Pro is the world’s first all-in-one intelligent pool-cleaning robot. It’s cordless and cleans the floor, waterline, and surface. It also features a water clarification function. With 20 onboard sensors, nine powerful motors, a dedicated Quad-Core 1.8 GHz processor, and an AI algorithm powered by Beatbot OS, it’s a dream come true for pool owners.

The “holistic” view of this robotic pool cleaner is impressive, given its numerous industry-first innovations. Let’s start with its simulated flight propulsion design. No other pool cleaner on the market can float to the surface and clean it intelligently.

This design draws inspiration from nature, specifically from the feeding mechanism of blue or humpback whales. These whales use a unique mechanism called filter feeding to consume large quantities of small prey, such as fish and tiny sea creatures. They do this by opening their mouths wide to gulp in a massive amount of water, then pushing the water out through their baleen plates with their tongues.

The AquaSense Pro robotic pool cleaner works similarly. It has a front flap and uses two propeller motors and two floating chamber motors to glide and suck in debris, leaves, bugs, and other pool pollutants. Its unique AquaGlide™ Simulated Flight Propulsion Design System enables it to move on water. Its top suction mouth and dust-rolling brush capture debris, preventing them from sinking. This feature alone saves significant pool cleaning time. After each cleaning cycle, the results are satisfactory.

It’s important to note that in its current form, the Pro Mode only makes one pass over the surface. After cleaning an area in an S-shaped pattern on the pool floor and surface, additional debris or leaves may fall into the pool. In such cases, do not expect the device to recognize and go back to clean that area again.

Performance

Where the AquaSense Pro truly shines, literally, in every sense of the word, is another industry-first — the built-in clarifier dispenser for a cleaner-looking pool by clearing up the pool water. This process takes place while cleaning the floor. The AI algorithm determines the amount needed based on the pool size for the most efficient use of the chemical.

In terms of cleaning, this robotic swimming pool cleaner excels. I’ve had the opportunity to use it in my pool and can attest that it effectively removes both visible and invisible debris. It’s surprising to realize how dirty the pool water is when you remove and clean the two-layer filter. This filter basket captures and holds all debris, accommodating particles as tiny as 150 micrometers.

Strong suction is just one aspect. The two sets of brushes, placed at the front and back, scrub simultaneously, enhancing the cleaning power. It’s quite captivating to observe them in action. These brushes operate at different speeds and in different directions at times for precise control and extensive coverage, ensuring a thoroughly clean pool. Usually, I find myself scrubbing the sides and bottom of the swimming pool every few days. Now, that task is reliably delegated.

The CleverNav plan effectively maps out and charts the path forward for an S-shape cleaning pattern for the pool floor and surface, while the sides and waterline utilize the N-shaped cleaning pattern. It does a great job of preventing overlaps. However, I don’t mind a bit of overlap, considering my swimming pool is as old as the house, which is over 35 years old.

Beatbot informed me that future firmware updates will allow for customized cleaning modes, which could enable the robot to clean continuously for up to 9.5 hours if necessary. On average, the battery life of the robot is over 5.5 hours on a single charge, taking less than 3 hours to fully recharge from complete depletion. If the battery level falls below 15%, the robot smartly returns to its starting point and parks itself on the water surface near a wall. It then automatically expels the water from its cavities. This makes it lighter when lifting it out of the pool and prevents a lot of water from spilling out. This MemoryPark smart return to the starting point is another industry first.

Ergonomics

I appreciate that, unlike other robotic pool cleaners, I don’t need to manually turn this one on or off for charging or use. It begins charging as soon as I place it on the charger, regardless of whether it’s on or off. After removing it from the base charger, it takes only 3 seconds to calibrate on a level surface before it’s ready to clean.

The buttons are designed and arranged intuitively. From left to right, they include quick clean mode, standard mode, power on/off, pro mode, and eco mode. My preference is the pro mode as it cleans the entire pool, encompassing the bottom, sides, water line, and surface. The Quick mode cleans the floor once, while the Standard mode also cleans the floor, walls, and waterline once. The ECO mode cleans the floor once every other day. A Custom mode, set to be available later through an over-the-air update, will allow for personalized cleaning settings.

Verdict

Beatbot has impressively incorporated a vast amount of technology and innovation into the AquaSense Pro. It’s hard to comprehend the 131 patents it holds, including 51 inventions and 20 sensors measuring water pressure, ultrasonic sensors, hall sensors, and temperature and humidity sensors. It even includes IMU and electrical current sensors to ensure smooth operation. Thanks to its nine motors, this robot can climb steps, clean them, and then proceed. The brushless main water pump motor at the robot’s core is a powerhouse. It’s akin to a 16-cylinder engine on a Bugatti arranged in a unique W configuration, ready for action every time water oozes out. Collectively, the drive-wheel motors, floating chamber peristaltic pump, surface propeller, stepping motor, and reagent pump motor make the AquaSense Pro one of the best swimming pool cleaners I’ve used in the past two decades. If you’re looking for a new cordless, hassle-free robotic cleaner, this will be the last one you’ll need to invest in.

Pool noodle furniture brings a spirit of play to both indoor and outdoor spaces

Bright, colorful, flexible, buoyant, and life-saving. These are the words that are often used to describe pool noodles, sometimes called waterlogs or even water woggles. These floating foam tubes allow kids and adults alike to engage in playful banter in the pool while still remaining safe, though they’re also finding use outside of the water. Their flexible bodies and soft material make the perfect objects for safe play, but they’ve amusingly also become the foundations of designs completely unrelated to their original use. Take this experimental set of furniture that employs these vibrant tubes to deliver that same whimsical atmosphere to chairs, tables, and everything in between.

Designer: Lieyah Dagan

They may come by any other name, but pool noodles are a popular component in many fanciful designs, from playground obstacle courses to car covers. Their ubiquity, affordability, and flexibility make it easy to shape them into different objects, combining them to form a more complex composition of rods, circles, and arcs. What pool noodles aren’t known for is stability and rigidity, properties that are almost antithetical to the very essence of these foamy objects. And yet that’s exactly what this furniture is presenting, mixing contrasting elements to give the designs a distinct, lively character.

The first step in producing the Looped line of indoor and outdoor furniture was to actually break chairs, tables, and other furniture down to their frames, revealing the structure that ultimately gives them form. The pool noodles are then used to “flesh out” the actual shape of the furniture, giving them mass that would be needed to support their newfound purpose as utilitarian objects. Once the final designs have been selected, dowels and medium-density fiberboard (MDF) are added to provide the needed support to make the furniture become more stable and reliable.

Of course, it wouldn’t be fun if the pool noodles simply followed the same shape as the original furniture. Looped embodies not just the characteristics but also the spirit of these playful waterlogs, employing plenty of curves, loops, and over-the-top proportions that make the furniture almost feel like toys. That, for better or worse, is both the strength and the flaw of the design.

Loop has an undeniable pull that makes people want to play with it, whether it’s because of the bright colors, the soft material, or familiarity with pool noodles. That’s fine with soft toys like actual pool noodles, but playing with a chair or a table brings risks of accidents and injuries. In the end, it creates a perception of playful engagement when they’re also supposed to be designed for serious use, creating a conflict in the mind of the viewer that is both enthralling but also a bit confusing.

With 3D Pool Mapping and 165W Suction, this Autonomous Pool Cleaner is an Absolute Must-Have

Think of the BlueNexus as the Roomba of the water. Unlike human pool cleaners, the BlueNexus actually enters your pool, scrubbing, suctioning, and purifying every inch itself. It performs a 3D scan of your pool first, so it can plot the most effective cleaning path, and then it gets to work, cleaning the pool floor, walls, and even steps without scuffing or scratching your pool’s walls.

Designer: Sublue Design

Click Here to Buy Now: $649 $1,199 ($550 off). Hurry, only 260/300 left. Raised over $230,000.

Designed by the folks at Sublue, the BlueNexus may be their first underwater robot vacuum, but it isn’t their first rodeo with submersible tech. The award-winning California-based startups has two other successful Kickstarter projects under their belt, namely the WhiteShark series of underwater sea-scooters. Designed less for entertainment and more for maintenance, the BlueNexus is Sublue’s third campaign, and perhaps its most advanced yet.

By comparison, designing an underwater sea-scooter is a lot easier than a submersible autonomous pool cleaner. The latter comes with a lot of bells and whistles, including 3D mapping technology, autonomous driving, vertical ascent, and just the ability to be an effective vacuum cleaner that doesn’t just remove debris, it scrubs algae off all surfaces an cleans the waterline too. The BlueNexus does all of that regardless of your pool’s shape, or the tiling material. It works on regular, curved, inclined, and even stepped pools, performing a comprehensive 3D scan using Sublue’s proprietary Geoguru navigation system to know what design it’s working with, before plotting the most effective cleaning path to get started.

Getting started is as easy as lowering the BlueNexus into the water and hitting a button on your smartphone app. The pool-cleaning robot features two units, the submersible vacuum bot itself, and a floating connectivity hub that allows it to communicate with your smartphone, tablet, etc. Once instructed, the BlueNexus gets to work, meticulously covering every inch of your pool. The 165W suction motor is enough to clean leaves, pebbles, and any other debris that may find its way into your pool, while a rotating scrubber also gently dislodges algae or anything else that’s stuck to your pool floor or walls. The folks at Sublue designed the BlueNexus to be compatible with a wide range of pool materials, going from the conventional concrete and mosaic tile to even vinyl lining, Pebble Tec, fiberglass, and PVC foil.

Geoguru – Equipped with 12+ sensors for flawless obstacle detection and pool wall protection.

The Geoguru mapping and navigation system is arguably the BlueNexus’ secret sauce. Relying on 12+ sensors (ultrasonic tech, infrared lasers, and advanced SLAM to name a few), the robot can map its way around the pool, detect obstacles, and even walls to make sure they don’t accidentally get scratched while cleaning. The Geoguru algorithm helps the BlueNexus be much more efficient too, making it clean 8x quicker than conventional pool cleaners. Couple that with the built-in 3.5-hour battery and the BlueNexus easily cruises through most pools without requiring a secondary charge.

Multiple Cleaning Mode – Adapts to any pool shape for a comprehensive clean, all controlled effortlessly with one touch.

The pool-cleaning robot comes with 5 different modes to choose from, including smart cleaning, floor cleaning, wall and waterline cleaning, all-round cleaning, and a remote control cleaning mode that allows you to control it through the app. Regardless of the mode you pick, when the BlueNexus is done cleaning, or when its battery runs low, it automatically ascends the pool wall, making it easy to fish out without needing to get into the pool. A large 4.5L inner chamber holds all the dirt that the BlueNexus cleaned out, and can easily be detached, emptied, and hosed down before being reinstalled.

The BlueNexus is compact, cordless, and is built like a rock. The lithium batteries encased within the pool cleaner are secured remarkably well, ensuring that water never seeps in. As far as software goes, Sublue guarantees improvements to the BlueNexus via OTA updates. Starting at $649 for early bird backers, the BlueNexus ships globally starting October 2023, and comes with a 2-year manufacturer warranty.

Meet The World’s First AI Underwater Security Camera Designed For Swimming Pool Safety

While most homes can’t afford a security guard 24×7, technology solved that problem with the AI-powered security home camera that now finds itself in millions of homes worldwide. It isn’t entirely feasible for all homes with pools to have their dedicated lifeguard either, which is why MYLO is looking at being to the pool what your doorbell cam is to your home. Designed to be the first-ever pool security camera that sits both above as well as UNDER the water, MYLO monitors whoever is entering and exiting your pool, giving you a clear picture of kids, adults, or even pets entering and exiting your pool. Touted as the world’s first virtual lifeguard for residential pools, MYLO lets you know when someone’s in your pool, and can even alert you if there’s trouble, helping prevent anyone from drowning or getting hurt.

It’s been incredibly hot this past month, and while everyone deserves to take a dip in their pool ever so often, we all know better than to leave kids unsupervised in the water. Drowning still remains the most prevalent cause of death for children globally, and while it isn’t entirely feasible to hire a lifeguard for your home swimming pool in the summer, it’s the kind of job that’s made infinitely easier through technology. MYLO lets you remotely monitor your pool, keeping tabs on your friends or family members as they frolic around in the water. Unlike other pool cameras that sit on walls and poles, facing the pool, MYLO was designed to sit on the edge of your pool, with two camera modules – one on the water’s surface, and another submerged underneath the water to provide 24×7 surveillance and protection, when the pool’s active and even when it isn’t. Data suggests that 88% of drownings happen in an active setting even with an adult nearby. MYLO’s powerful hardware and AI hopes to significantly bring down this statistic by adding an extra layer of safety to pool time!

With its periscope-inspired form factor, MYLO sits securely at the corner of your pool (or on the ledge, if your pool is curved or non-rectangular), with two cameras that monitor the water from the inside as well as out. Video footage from the pool gets sent to MYLO’s smartphone app, while a built-in alarm system within MYLO emits a sharp audio signal if its AI detects anyone drowning. Moreover, MYLO comes with a separate beacon unit that plugs into your home too, alerting you when you’re inside the house of drowning or any suspicious activity. The two cameras work in tandem to determine who’s in your pool, and the AI is trained specifically to identify both struggle-drowning as well as silent drowning, alerting you immediately. However, it does require a wired power connection and needs to be within range of a WiFi network for it to actively work with the app to give you a real-time feed and alerts.

MYLO’s design presents a new, game-changing format for virtual pool monitoring. The upper and lower camera can sense and track people entering your pool. If the submerged camera fails to detect the opposite end of the pool (the farthest wall), it sends you an alert, letting you know the pool’s water may need cleaning. Moreover, if air bubbles stick to the domed outer cover of the camera, a dedicated ‘eyelid’ helps brush the bubbles off, giving MYLO a clear view of your pool once again.

The AI is what truly makes MYLO a powerful virtual lifeguard. While most pool monitors only detect active drowning (when a person is struggling and splashing around), MYLO’s AI also detects silent drowning. Silent drowning affects young children, who can sometimes just quietly slip under the surface of the water without active signs of struggling. MYLO’s AI underwater camera is trained to detect silent drowning too, sending immediate alerts to both your phone as well as its security beacon inside your house, allowing you to quickly save the victim’s life. Sensors within MYLO also keep it active and vigilant at night. If MYLO’s built-in pressure sensors detect any unusual movements in the water after dark, the device sends an alert to your phone for ‘suspicious water movement’, while MYLO’s built-in alarm as well as your home beacon both play a loud, short chirp to scare away anyone using your pool without permission.

Designed to be compact, effective, and work 24×7 (even when you least expect it), MYLO keeps your pool safe and your family safer. The device has gone through thousands of tests and trained simulations in a wide variety of pools with adults as well as children, making its AI incredibly capable with the promise of it only getting better with time. The periscope-shaped MYLO is easy to install, and can either be drilled in place or secured to a heavy tile or even glued to the floor with water-resistant glue, if drilling isn’t an option. The camera has a visibility of 10 yards (10 meters) and a 110-120 degree field of view, giving it great visibility for long or even oval-shaped pools. Each MYLO also comes with the home beacon, which can be plugged up to 100 feet 30 meters) from the main MYLO device, and an app that allows you to monitor pool activity and address alerts in real-time, as well as save images and videos to the cloud for later.

Massive basalt-clad home in Mexico is topped with a rooftop pool

Mexico-based studio Reims 502 designed a massive residence in Querétaro, Mexico accentuated with warm walnut and dark basalt finishes. The expansive home features a rooftop pool and a lovely garden area. Designers Eduardo Reims and Andrea Maldonado work under the name Reims 502 and finished the 1000 square feet residence on a quarter-acre plot in 2023. The rather intriguing-looking home is called Casa Basaltica.

Designer: Reims 502

The residence has been placed on a bike path that subtly surrounds a lake. A major challenge faced by the architects was to create a private interior space for the residents, without compromising on the stunning view. “The answer was simple. Reverse the planting of the program compared to the neighboring houses,” said the team. The ground floor of the home accommodates the private, family, and recreational spaces which form the foundation of the building. One side of the property is marked by four suites, which create a layered sawtooth transition amped with a screened porch. The porch is surrounded by movable shutters built out of thin basalt stone bars which function as blinds, and a thermal buffer to curb the need for air conditioning.

The top floor holds all the public spaces such as the living room, dining room, kitchen, and terrace. These spaces have been arranged around a massive garden and a pool. The rooms on the upper floor have been placed behind the perimeter of the home on the park side, to introduce another layer of privacy. The service areas have been positioned underground, with a side courtyard for natural lighting and ventilation.

The exterior of the home is quite interesting as well, as it has been clad in bands of durable and resilient basalt stone which has been arranged in an interesting vertical panel pattern. However, the material changes and swaps into multi-toned walnut planks at the garage and the rounded corner entryway. The walnut stave is included in the interiors as well, “creating an atmosphere of warmth and timelessness inside.” Solar panels have been integrated into the home for water heating, energy ventilation, and water recycling to “contribute to its overall sustainable performance,” the studio concluded.

There’s a reason why swimming pools are considered luxuries that few can afford. In addition to the cost of constructing the pool itself, its maintenance and cleaning require manual work that can be pretty expensive as well. That’s what they said about keeping floors clean, too, but now we have smart robot vacuums to do that tedious job for us. Fortunately, AIRROBO just launched the new PC100 cordless robotic pool cleaner, delivering stress-free and sweat-free maintenance of pools in time for summer fun.

With its cordless and hose-free design, this pool vacuum offers more freedom and convenience when cleaning your pool, making it safer and easier to use.

The AIRROBO PC100 is a true wonder, with two brushes scrubbing your pool floors and a powerful suction of 55GPM (Gallons Per Minute) that makes short work of leaves, dirt, debris, and even fine sand along its path, ensuring a clean and healthy swim every time. It doesn’t just clean floors, either. Just like that popular comic book superhero, it can also clean walls and waterlines, crawling up walls up to 90 degrees. Its large 4L filter basket lets it give the pool a thorough cleaning before you need to pick it up.

The robot is pretty smart, too, so you don’t even have to supervise it while it gets the dirty job done. AI-powered NaviCleanTM technology allows the PC100 to know exactly where it is, how large the pool is, and the best paths it needs to take. Equipped with high-accuracy motion sensors and self-developed algorithms, you can simply “set-and-forget” the robot pool cleaner for the ultimate worry-free automation convenience. That makes the AIRROBO PC100 10 times more efficient than traditional pool cleaning methods.

This intelligent pool cleaner creates an ultrasonic map of your swimming pool and cleans its floor, walls, and stairs

“The advantage of using a robotic pool cleaner is that it does a far better job than a human, given that it actually works INSIDE the water instead of cleaning it from the outside.”

With three ultrasonic radars and a 250W suction motor, the Degrii Zima Pro is like a Roomba for your swimming pool. It creates a 3D map of your entire pool, intelligently plotting the best path to cover its entire area just the way a robot vacuum does. With a clever design that splits the cleaner into two parts – a submersible cleaning unit and a floating battery unit – the Degrii Zima Pro effectively traverses every corner of your pool, picking up dirt and debris from the floor of your pool while also scrubbing its walls and steps and purifying the pool water too.

Designer: Degrii Design

Click Here to Buy Now: $599 $999 (40% off). Hurry, only 17/200 left! Raised over $180,000.

Designed to work with practically any pool regardless of its shape or size, the Degrii Zima Pro is a sophisticated little device that takes the human effort out of pool cleaning. Whether it’s grime, slime, or just dried leaves, the Degrii Zima Pro gets the work done without human intervention (and will even clean while you’re in the pool!) It starts by scanning your pool in 3D and plotting all its surfaces. Once it has a 3D model of your pool, it then decides the optimal way to cover it entirely, cleaning every inch. Set it to work remotely, or control it like you would an underwater RC toy, and the Degrii Zima Pro vacuum cleans and scrubs your pool, covering even the stairs, the tanning area, and the shallow baby-pool if you’ve got one.

Cordless Design – Zima Pro uses a supercharged floating 10,000mAH battery that powers its cleaning missions for deeper, longer cleans.

The Degrii Zima Pro’s split-body design comprises two parts – a floating 10,000mAh battery that powers the cleaner and acts as the WiFi hub for the device (creating a stronger WiFi connection since it’s not underwater), and the cleaner itself, which comes with industry-leading ultrasonic radars, a 250W brushless pump, and 6.5 liter dual-filter baskets that collect dirt, grime, leaves lying around in your pool. The massive battery gives the Degrii Zima Pro 3.5-hours of use, allowing it to cover, 5000 square feet of area in one single charge, and the powerful suction pump works on a variety of surfaces, including tiled, vinyl, fiberglass, plaster, and aggregate surfaces. It also provides a distinct advantage by being split from the cleaner’s design – aside from general safety (because batteries in chlorinated water can be hazardous), a split battery allows the Degrii Zima Pro to have a larger battery unit (so more run time) while keeping the cleaning unit relatively light, so it can be lifted out of the water with ease. It also makes accessing and replacing the battery easier. The cleaning unit’s large wheels help it overcome any kind of obstacles, and a built-in water purification unit also allows it to actively purify your pool water, making the water crystal clear.

Ultrasonic Radar for your Most Precise Clean – Industry-leading ultrasonic radars analyzes the terrain and shape of your pool before every cleaning session.

No Obstacle Can Stand in Zima’s Way – With the help of advanced ultrasonic radars, Zima Pro can easily detect and avoid obstacles like rocks and stones.

Superb 250W Suction – Sucks up everything from the big stuff, like rocks (up to 1.2’’) and leaves (up to 5.1’’), to the little stuff like particles of dirt as small as 180 µm.

Simple Water Purification – Fit Zima Pro with an active charcoal pack to absorb fine dirt and eliminate odors.

From the Floors to the Walls – Zima Pro’s 250W engine gives it the strength to climb up slopes, pool stairs, and walls with ease – for fully-comprehensive clean in just one pass.

Effortless Pool Maintenance with the App – Check Zima Pro’s cleaning progress, battery level, and let Zima Pro know when it’s time to climb out of the pool with just a tap of your finger.

If you’ve ever seen the thousands of pool cleaning videos on the internet, you know what an absolute task it is for a human to clean every inch of a pool. You need to drain the water, wear appropriate clothing, bring out the solvents and chemicals, scrub every inch, wipe the entire pool clean, and then add the water back. The alternative that Degrii Zima Pro promises is as easy as hitting a button on your phone and having a robot do the job for you without rendering your pool unusable. The Degrii Zima Pro simply traverses your pool autonomously at the push of a button, picking up everything from the big stuff, like rocks (up to 1.2’’) and leaves (up to 5.1’’), to the little stuff like particles of dirt as small as 180 µm. The wheels on the Degrii Zima Pro allow it to move around on the pool floor, as well as climb stairs and walls. The device even cleans the scum that collects around the edges of your pool at the waterline, and runs all the water through an activated charcoal pack to absorb fine dirt and eliminate odors. Once you’re done, cleaning the insides of the device is as easy as removing the dual-filter baskets and hosing them down to wash the dirt and debris off. Put them back and you’re good for the next time you need to clean the pool.

Parks Itself – Zima Pro is smart enough to park itself at the wall of your pool whenever it’s done cleaning — or the battery dips below 10%.

Out With One Click – When you press the ‘Lift’ button, Zima Pro clambers up the nearest wall and will wait patiently for you for 5 minutes.

Setting up your Degrii Zima Pro is as simple as dropping it into the pool and firing up the app. The cleaning unit immediately maps its way around your pool, tugging the floating battery pack with it wherever it goes. The app gives you a real-time status report of your pool-cleaning routine, and even allows you to remotely control the Degrii Zima Pro device manually to cover certain areas where there’s more dirt than usual. When the battery runs out or the cleaning is completed, the Degrii Zima Pro cleverly travels to the closest wall/edge of the pool and parks itself, so you can fish it out without resorting to poles or jumping in. Besides, at its discounted price of $599, the Degrii Zima Pro works out much cheaper than actually hiring a pool-cleaner, and does a more thorough job too!

Click Here to Buy Now: $599 $999 (40% off). Hurry, only 17/200 left! Raised over $180,000.

The inflatable dinosaur features a 3-blade propeller powered by a 66-watt motor and six D batteries that allow you to cruise in any direction you want to. I don’t know about you, but I’ll be steering towards the swim-up bar!

As far as capturing the likeness of a t-rex goes, they didn’t do a fantastic job. It’s still terrifying, though, just not in the way I’d expect a t-rex to be. It’s more of a ‘Good lord, what happened to you?!’ kind of way.

Don’t have the money to spend on a fancy motorized t-rex pool float? No worries, that’s what pool noodles were made for. They’re not that fun, but they are cost-effective. That’s what my parents got me when I was a kid, and we didn’t even have a pool, just a bathtub.

This robot vacuum cleaner works underwater, cleaning your pool’s floor as well as walls

Like a Roomba for your pool, the AIPER Seagull 3000 submerges itself in water to clean dirt in a way that your regular vacuum cleaner never could. Uniquely designed to work underwater (thanks to its rather clever floating battery unit), the AIPER Seagull 3000 filters water through its system, catching dirt, leaves, twigs, algae, and even that difficult-to-catch scum that your average cordless cleaner can’t grab. In turn, the AIPER Seagull 3000’s fine filtration system captures debris as small as 180 µm preventing it from re-entering the water. You can operate it manually via a smartphone app or have it autonomously clean your pool’s floor, walls, and edges/corners efficiently with its 120W suction capability.

The AIPER Seagull 3000’s design broadly splits into two forms – a floating 7800mAh battery pack which acts as a buoy/power-station for the secondary element, the vacuum itself, which dives deep underwater, with just a cord connecting the two elements. The fact that the Seagull 3000 has an independent battery just makes it a much stronger and more capable machine – sort of like how a split AC compares to a window AC. The floating battery (which AIPER mentions is one-of-a-kind in its class) eliminates the risk of most current corded pool cleaners that require wires going from a plug point right into the pool (you don’t need me to tell you what a bad idea that is). The floating battery makes the Seagull 3000 cordless, safe, and just as effective. In fact, AIPER mentions that people can still use the pool with the Seagull 3000 working inside it (just try not to venture too close to its vacuum head!)

The AIPER Seagull 3000 has a run-time of two hours and can cover 3229ft² of area including the pool’s floor, walls, as well as its waterline (or the edge of the water, where all the scum and dirt usually gather the most), while its strong 120W suction power and dual filter baskets (with a total capacity of 5.4L) grab every stray leaf, flower, or stone floating around in your water.

The advantage to using a robotic pool cleaner is that it does a far better job than most humans, given that it actually works INSIDE the water instead of cleaning from the outside. The Seagull 3000 autonomously runs along the pool floor, climbs up walls, covers corners, edges, stairs, and those scummy waterlines. A 3-axis triple-drive motor system allows the Seagull 3000 to make dynamic 360° turns inside the water, allowing it to be more energy efficient by increasing the cleaning coverage by 30%. Rugged PVC brushes catch any waste within your pool, from dry leaves to mud and even algal buildup, and two 2.7 liter baskets on either side of the vacuum unit collect all the waste at the end of the cycle for you to easily pop out and clean. The baskets offer more effective waste collection while being much easier to clean than the bag-based collection systems on other vacuum cleaners. (Ever tried rinse-cleaning a vacuum bag? It’s a headache.)

It goes without saying that, like any automated device, the AIPER Seagull 3000 comes with its own app that lets you get an overview of the product and access its features/cleaning-modes. The app lets you configure your Seagull 3000 and set which cleaning mode you want it to run – choosing between 3 automatic cleaning modes (where it cleans your floor and walls once, twice, or thrice) and 1 manual mode which lets you commandeer the Seagull 3000 like some amphibious RC car, giving you complete control over your pool and allowing you to cover harder-to-reach areas or areas with more dirt than normal.

When the Seagull 3000 finishes running its course or ends up with a low battery, it automatically navigates to the edge of the pool and auto-parks on the side of the pool so as to not get in the way of people using the pool. To fish it out of the water, you can have it climb the wall up to the waterline, making it easy to reach in and pull the device out of the water (although the wall-climbing feature doesn’t activate on critical battery levels, so you may need to gently pull the Seagull 3000 up using the battery line). The AIPER Seagull 3000 is priced at a respectable $649 (for the Super Early Bird edition) and ships globally with a 2-year warranty.

This modular open-air pool can be disassembled and moved throughout Copenhagen’s harbor!

The Dyppezone is a modular, open-air bath that’s easily disassembled and movable throughout the harbor, bringing cold water basins in the winter and children’s pools in the summer.

If you live in a city with a body of water, chances are you’ve felt that spontaneous urge to just jump into the harbor or lake on a late walk for a night swim with friends. While the urge is strong, it’s typically not advised to take the plunge–water depths are unknown, no lifeguard is ever on duty, and the ‘swims’ usually just consist of treading. In Copenhagen, Maritime Architecture Studio unveiled the Dyppezone, a movable open-air bath that’s portable and modular by design.

The Dyppezone, located in Copenhagen’s harbor, comprises eight movable modules that easily attach to one another to form an octagonal pool in the middle of the harbor. When assembled together, the modules come together and form an adjustable bottom that can be raised or elongated according to varying needs and changing seasons.

With its adjustable bottom, Maritime Architecture Studio notes, “the Dyppezone can be used both as a children’s pool in the summer and as a cold water basin in the winter.”

While Copenhagen’s harbor is no stranger to permanent bathing zones, the Dyppezone differs from those structures with the modular structure that allows it to be disassembled, packaged, and transported easily around the harbor. Maritime Architecture Studio envisions the Dyppezone located either in existing bathing zones or in close proximity to harborside events with saunas set up on the quayside for use following the pool.

Bringing the urge to jump in the harbor to all city visitors and residents, Maritime Architecture Studio says that the Dyppezone is, “Free for use to all bathing Copenhageners who want a comfortable and safe way to swim in the harbor.”
