The first wooden t-shirt by Vollebak is painted with the cleanest black ink derived from wood waste

For almost everyone I know, a black shirt or blouse is a wardrobe staple, no matter what your fashion sensibilities may be. In fact, for some, black is probably the only color that they prefer. But according to a research from the World Health Organization, most of the black pigments used may be carcinogenic since they come from the process of burning petroleum. There are some enterprising and eco-friendly creators out there who really love black and have created something a little more earth-friendly and safe.

Designer: Vollebak

This British clothing brand have come up with a simple black t-shirt that is not only made from wood but even the color used is also made from wood. The aptly named Wooden T-Shirt is the latest in their earth-friendly line of black shirts. Previously, they created the Black Algae Dyed T Shirt which was able to absorb CO2 and the Off Grid shirt which was made from nettle stalks and red turnips. This time around, the black shirt is made from wood pulp and seaweed and dyed with wood waste.

The material used for the shirt is partly drawn from pulped eucalyptus (75% Lyocell) and also from seaweed from the Icelandic fjords (19% SeaCell). It also has a bit of Roica V550 biodegradable fiber so the cloth can stretch a bit. The bio-ink that makes it black is created from wood waste from various materials like lumber, paper, and even flooring sectors. Because of this wood ink, the shirt will be able to absorb CO2 as well for the next 100 years, long after you’ve passed from this earth.

As for the design, there isn’t much innovation there as it is just a plain, black t-shirt. Most people who wear shirts like this don’t really care much about other design innovations though and what makes this Wooden T-Shirt different isn’t how it looks like but how it was created. The retail price for earth-friendly black staple wear is $125. There are various sizes available, from XS to XXL. It would be interesting to see what other eco-friendly shirts Vollebak will come up in the future.

This comfortable white tee-shirt can perform an ECG much more accurately than your Apple Watch

The world of fashion doesn’t get its fair share of credit. Clothes do so much more than just cover our bodies and indicate cultures/styles. They help regulate our inner temperature, armors help protect against harm, camo-wear helps reduce visibility, safety vests help increase visibility, sports clothing boost your physical abilities, the list goes on… and in the near future, the clothes you wear may be able to prematurely detect and prevent heart attacks.

The Viscero vest by Ireland-based Design Partners is a wearable ECG device that looks like the iconic plain white tee shirt. Designed to do away with those incredibly clunky Holter monitors (that can often increase patient discomfort), the Viscero is simply a white vest you wear underneath your clothing. Unlike the Holter which involves sticking ‘wet’ electrodes to your body and having them connected to a walkie-talkie-sized device that’s perpetually strapped to your chest, Viscero is as easy and freeing as wearing any t-shirt or garment. The body-hugging vest comes with dry electrodes integrated into the tee shirt’s design, placed at strategic points to accurately capture medical data, while the data itself is sent to a compact smart wearable device that attaches to the side of the tee, right above the pocket.

Designer: Design Partners

An arrhythmia is an abnormal heartbeat that can be harmless or life-threatening. The most common type is atrial fibrillation (AFib), where the upper heart chambers contract irregularly, increasing the likelihood of blood clots, stroke, heart failure, and other heart-related complications. According to the CDC, it’s estimated that by 2030 as many as 12.1 million people in the United States will annually have AFib.

Detecting Afib isn’t particularly swift or easy either. Unlike an ECG, which just captures data over a short window, checking for Afib requires gathering hours or even days’ worth of heart behavior to check for anomalies. The Apple Watch, which can perform basic ECGs, isn’t designed to continuously check for Afib, which means its accuracy rate falls to around 34% in most adults, according to research. Doctors commonly rely on Holter monitors for shorter monitoring windows (roughly 24 hours), or on invasive methods like implantable loop recorders (ILRs) for long-term capturing. While the Holter seems like the most convenient option, a traditional Holter is uncomfortable to wear and inhibits natural movement, often making the data it collects unrepresentative and unhelpful. This led to Design Partners asking themselves, “How might we create an accurate, unintrusive, and non-invasive solution that could monitor you for weeks or even months?”

Viscero’s biggest innovation is the fact that it contains a carefully designed ECG circuit system right into the fabric. The tee uses a series of dry electrodes that are positioned away from the chest to more peripheral locations while maintaining consistent compression points. This allows the Viscero to sit on your torso as comfortably as a tee would, while in fact, being a medical-grade, 6-lead ECG monitoring system. “Now you can run for the bus, walk your dog, hug your children and unwind on the sofa, without giving Viscero a second thought”, say the team at Design Partners.

This black algae dyed t-shirt is Vollebak’s latest creation designed to suck carbon-dioxide from the atmosphere!

Vollebak grows black algae in giant ponds located in California, which is collected and heat-treated to concentrate it into a black powder to be used as a pigment for dye.

Every day, we wear clothes without knowing how they’re made. Unless you’re already buying clothes from sustainable brands, most of the clothing we wear is produced from material that isn’t harvested responsibly, let alone biodegradable. Take the color black–our favorite everyday black t-shirts are colored by a pigment derived from petroleum called carbon black. However, Vollebak, a clothing brand that uses technology to produce sustainable t-shirts and bottoms, aims to reinvent the way that the color black is made.

Carbon black is a color pigment that’s used to dye our clothing black. After large plots of land called tar sands are stripped of all pre-existing vegetation and animal life, carbon black is extracted from the petroleum stored underground. Noticing the unsustainable practices of producing black clothing, Vollebak discovered that you don’t have to dig up any earth to access black algae.

Known for growing in ponds, black algae only needs sunlight and carbon dioxide to flourish. Having abundant access to a natural black pigment, Vollebak used material technology to collect and use black algae to dye their t-shirts black. The result? The Black Algae T-Shirt feels and looks just like a conventionally dyed t-shirt.

Each t-shirt from Vollebak is made from eucalyptus trees that are harvested from sustainably managed forests. Once the pulp from eucalyptus trees gets spun into a wearable fabric, each t-shirt is dyed with black algae ink, which continues to lock in the carbon dioxide it absorbed while still alive. In order to lock the carbon dioxide into the shirt for up to 100 years, Vollebak uses carbon capture technology to trap carbon dioxide at its emission source.

After harvesting black algae from their ponds, Vollebak puts the algae through a heat treatment that concentrates it into powder form. “The black algae ink has been engineered to be UV resistant so it will hold its color for years. But since this is a bio-based ink it won’t behave exactly like a petroleum-based ink. Over time the black color may brighten around the edges next to the seams. To make the algae last for as long as possible we recommend hand washing the t-shirt in cold water with as little detergent as possible.”

The T-shirts themselves are produced from eucalyptus trees that are harvested from sustainably managed forests. “The rest of the t-shirt is made from wood pulp from sustainably managed forests. Eucalyptus, beech, spruce are chipped and pulped, before being turned into fiber, then yarn, and finally fabric. All the wood is harvested from sustainable forestry plantations and certified by both the Forestry Sustainability Council (FSC) and the Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification (PEFC). Representing over 700 million acres of certified forests, the PEFC is the largest forest certification system in the world.” Instead of dyeing the shirt’s individual fibers black, Vollebak dyes the entire outer surface of their shirts in black algae ink, which is why the final color of each t-shirt is more of a very dark grey marl.

Since all the materials used to produce their Black Algae T-shirt, the shirt can biodegrade in about 12 weeks. Once the material has disappeared just the black algae ink will remain in an almost imperceptible, safe and non-toxic state. And while other organic materials release carbon dioxide when they decompose, this ink will continue storing its carbon for over 100 years.

Engineered to be UV-resistant, the t-shirt will hold its color for years.

“The wood is turned into [the] fabric using an environmentally responsible and closed-loop production process. In practice, this means that over 99% of the water and solvent used to turn pulp into fiber is recycled and reused.”

Since its not petroleum-based ink, the black algae ink dye will brighten near the t-shirt’s seams and edges.

High-performance everyday tees made from recycled water bottles and eucalyptus will swear you off cotton forever

Remember when 100% cotton was the golden standard for everyday clothing? Not that there’s anything wrong with cotton… but hey, it’s human nature to look for better solutions, right? Meet Seadon, a series of high-performance tees made for everyday wearing. Designed to be more breathable, durable, comfortable, temperature-regulating, moisture-wicking, and fast-drying than the standard cotton tee, Seadon’s everyday tee shirts come made from a mix of innovative fibers. From comfortable merino wool to naturally cooling eucalyptus-based Tencel, and the sustainable and moisture-wicking recycled PET, Seadon’s tees are anything but the status quo cotton tees.

Seadon’s Daily Tees push the boundaries of the understated comfort and utility of your go-to tee shirt. Designed around specific purposes, the tees come in three variants. The Traveller is the perfect base-layer tee shirt, designed for long trips and outdoor use. Made from 70% Merino Wool and 30% Eucalyptus-fiber Tencel, the tees are engineered to be soft and comfortable as they regulate temperature, resist wrinkling, staining, and repel liquids. The Traveller works as a great insulator and can be worn over thick coats and jackets. Conversely, if the sun gets too rough, the tee works well independently too, with a rating of UPF~ 50+ to protect you against harsh sunlight. Designed to be worn over long journeys, the tee can be worn for as long as 7 days before needing to be washed.

For more active lifestyles, the Trailblazer tee gives you the comfort of a fabric that feels comfortable and airy when worn. Made from equal parts RPET and Polygiene (and finished with ‘miDori’ a naturally wicking coating derived from algae oil), Seadon’s Trailblazer tees are perfect for sweating in. The tees naturally stretch to let you move freely, dry faster than traditional clothing, and offer high breathability and sun-protection. Made from a yarn that’s derived from recycled plastic, these tees last much longer than traditional clothing, while also being more sustainable and having a lower carbon footprint than your cotton or polyester tee shirt.

Seadon’s third variant proves to be its most popular with ‘best-of-both-worlds’ features. Crafted from a proprietary combination of Bluesign RPET (recycled PET), Polygiene, Eucalyptus Tencel, and with the moisture-wicking miDori coating, the Daymaker gives you the comfort of your favorite tee shirt but upgrades its abilities with durable stitching, moisture-wicking, quick-drying, as well as temperature-regulating features.

Each tee comes in multiple sizes for men and women, sports a variety of colors, and even sleeve lengths. Sporting an evergreen design that’s well-paired with a durable build, comfortable yarn, and a host of features that just make them superior, Seadon’s Daily Tees reinvent the wheel by taking the ubiquitous, classic cotton tee and making it softer, more long-lasting, breathable, stretchable, and the kind of tee your skin will fall in love with. Besides, its ethically-sourced supply chain and bio-degradable packaging will ensure the environment loves your tees too!

Louis Vuitton’s ‘League of Legends’ biker jacket can be yours for $5,650

Louis Vuitton's League of Legends apparel line is here, and as you'd expect, it is expensive. On the lower end, there's a $670 t-shirt with League of Legends champion Qiyana on the front and back. On the other end of the spectrum, you can nab a $5,65...

Vollebak’s new 100% biodegradable T-Shirt is made from plants and algae!

Another new month, another new experimental garment from the inimitable creative apparel powerhouse that is VolleBak… except this time they haven’t made a hoodie that glows, or can be worn on Mars, or is made from graphene or carbon fiber. This time they’ve created a garment that doesn’t consciously last thousands of years, but rather, turns into worm-food when you’re done wearing it. VolleBak’s bizzarely eco-friendly shirt uses a never-seen-before one-of-a-kind yarn made from pulped eucalyptus, spruce, and beech, along with a print that’s created using the world’s most abundant flora… algae!

“The only thing different about this T-shirt is that it grew in soil and water, and that’s where it’s designed to end up too. All you need to do is remember to compost it at the end of its life. Here it will biodegrade with them, turn into soil, and help new plants to grow,” explains Vollebak co-founder, Steve Tidball. The yarn is produced using wood-pulp from sustainably managed forests, while the green print on it is derived from algae grown in a bioreactor, before being passed through a filter and dried to form a powder that’s turned into ink. Since algae can’t survive outside water, the print technically isn’t ‘living’, and will fade over time like a patina, making each shirt unique. When you’re done wearing the shirt, just bury it underground and it completely biodegrades in 12 weeks, turning into compost that can then grow new trees. Sustainable fashion, y’all!

These outdoor clothes are proof that crowdfunding is revolutionizing the fashion industry

Crowdfunding has done much more for small entrepreneurs than any other platform has, but that doesn’t mean entrepreneurs have stood to benefit off the concept of crowdfunding, because in many ways platforms like Kickstarter have helped catalyze innovation. Clothes made from kevlar, jeans made from recycled plastic bottles, or towels that can reverse signs of aging. None of these would really exist, or even stand a chance at existing, outside the crowdfunding realm. Crowdfunding has categorically disrupted many industries, and the fashion industry is no exception either.

Camilo Meija’s journey as a small-time entrepreneur speaks of that industry-disrupting change too. His company, The Frenchie Co. specializes in hand-crafted apparel that’s teeming with innovation, one of which involves a patented copper-fiber blended into the fabric that reduces joint pain you’d get from a sedentary lifestyle. The copper fibers also help make the clothes anti-odor and anti-bacterial, allowing them to stay fresher for longer.

Meija’s latest brainwave is to extend this technology to travel-fashion, a burgeoning industry. Imagine only needing two pairs of clothes for a 10 day vacation. They’d fit comfortably, never gather odor or get dirty, and you’d only need to wash them after wearing them at least 5-6 times. Referring to it as the Ultimate Travel Clothing, Meija’s idea is to make garments that you can wear everyday, over and over again, saving you loads of space while packing, and even taking the tension of laundry off your mind. The Ultimate Travel Clothing comes with the copper-fiber technology that allows you to sit through long flights without getting joint pains, while even eliminating the need to be periodically washed after each time you wear it. The clothes that currently span a t-shirt and pair of jeans come with anti-wrinkle technology too, so you never need to carry a travel iron with you, and feature a stretchable, breathable fabric so you’re comfortable at all times.

Optimized for travel, the jeans come with anti-theft pockets, giving you a safe space to store your passport and cash while you’re in a foreign country. What’s more is that they pack built-in adjustment straps, so you never need to wear a belt… or conversely, you never need to take your belt off every time you pass through security at an airport. Smart, no?!

To bundle this line of fashion together, the guys at The Frenchie Co. even designed a travel backpack that can fit all your essentials along with the Ultimate Travel Clothes, giving you all your luggage for a weekend getaway in a slim backpack that promptly expands from 20 to 40 liters whenever you need. The backpack features 29 easy-to-access pockets, including padded compartments for your laptop and DSLR. Rain-resistant fabric makes sure your belongings never get wet outdoors, and a rather innovative magnetic flap system arrests movement of the bag’s zippers so a thief can never access them while you’re unaware.

What The Frenchie Co. presents is a new way of traveling. It’s designed to be comfortable, breathable, long-lasting, and saves you the hassle of finding laundry services while you travel. The anti-odor and anti-wrinkle garments can be worn day in and day out, so you don’t need to carry spare sets of clothing, and that sufficiently advanced backpack just bundles it all together, to show you that you can carry a week’s worth of clothes in a backpack, rather than having to rely on a massive check-in trolley-bags!
