French Artist Is Living Inside a Bear for 13 Days, Grins, Bears It

Performance artists. What won’t they do for attention? One guy, French artist Abraham Poincheval, is spending 13 days inside a taxidermy bear. That’s right. He is camping out inside of a dead bear.

He is doing this for his performance art piece “Dans La Peau de l’Ours” (“Inside the Skin of the Bear”) at the Hunting and Wildlife Museum in Paris through April 13, 2014. And also for attention. It’s just how artists are. Poincheval will remain enclosed in a cramped compartment inside of the bear. Kind of like a bear baby in the womb.

The “performance” is being streamed live via two cameras if you’re into that kind of thing. Watch man and bear co-exist in a truly weird way.

DIY Wampa Taxidermy Head Made from Paper and Lots of Awesome

I’ve always thought it was creepy to hang the heads of dead animals on your wall. They always look like they are watching you as you move around the room. If you are a big fan of The Empire Strikes Back, you might not mind hanging this animal head on your wall.

What we have here is a DIY Wampa head made out of cardboard boxes, newspaper, tape, glue, faux fur, and a few other household items. It looks a lot like paper mache, but it’s not. It was made by the fine folks at OurNerdHome, and its builders say they spent only about $20 on the project.

While there aren’t step-by-step instructions, the images do give you an idea of what you need to do to make your own. I wonder what kind of fur was used. It looks sort of like the fur on that Wampa rug we talked about a while back.

This is certainly one of the coolest DIY Star Wars projects I have seen.

Sheep Bedside Tables Are Sheer Insanity

This unusual bedside table was inspired by the works of Salvador Dalí and made by Oscar Tusquets, an artist in Spain. He built these drawers using taxidermied sheep. Obviously.

They specifically reference this image by Dalí seen here called “Interpretation Project for a Stable-Library.” You can see the sheep cabinet on the left side of the image. And now this dude is bringing it to life. Using dead sheep. Tusquets worked with a famous French taxidermy studio in Paris, to make 21 sheep cabinets in all. Each one has bronze feet, a tabletop and a drawer for all of your stuff that you absolutely must store in a dead sheep.

There will be 20 white sheep and one black sheep with white legs, just to keep things interesting. Each cabinet will sell for about $82,000(USD). Now that’s a lot of bah bah bucks.

Mouse Taxidermy Chess Set: Roll Your Dice, Move Your Mice

While I like playing the occasional game of chess, I don’t think I’d be able to make it through a round playing with this chess set without throwing up a little bit in the back of my throat.

Yes, what you’re looking at is an entire chess set made from taxidermied mice. It was made by Etsy creator TheCurious13 “to get people’s attention.” Well, mission accomplished, Curious, mission accomplished.

According to its description the set is made from “fur, taxidermy, mouse, mice, foam, cotton, wire, beads, fabric, wood, paint, paper, and glue.” That’s right, there are so many mice, he had to state it twice. Hey, I made a rhyme!

Each mouse has been dressed in appropriate garb, including tiny crowns for Kings and Queens, and these adorably creepy little bishop’s outfits:

Each of the 32 mice in the set was already dead, frozen and bred to be fed to reptiles, so I suppose this is a slightly more pleasant outcome for them. I guess. Unfortunately (or is it fortunately), the set has already been sold, so we don’t have to worry about the cat eating all our pawns any time soon.

Taxidermied Mice Chess Set

Taxidermied Mice Chess Set
Etsy shop TheCurious13 (not to be confused with TheIndifferent11) is selling this chess set with taxidermied mice as the pieces. Wheeeeee? I feel sick. Not just because I ate that burrito way too fast, but because WTF am I looking at? Thirty-two mice that were once alive are now dead, stuffed and wearing tiny cute [...]

Fashion is Dead and So Are The Birds on These Shoes
You know you’re jaded when you see a pair of shoes made out of real birds and you think to yourself, “It’s been done.” Sure, it has been done, but that doesn’t make it any less weird when it’s done again, right? To be completely fair to most people wear dead animals all the time—leather, [...]

No, Just No: Ostrich Quadracopter

No, Just No: Ostrich Quadracopter
First there was the Cat Quadracopter. That gave me nightmares. Nightmares and day terrors, if we’re being honest. Now there’s this Ostrich Quadracopter and I’m never going to sleep again. The flying monstrocity was created by visual artist Bart Jansen and technical engineer Arjen Beltman. The only thing that could make this better is if [...]

Creepy Taxidemy Collection Is Creepy

We’ve seen some pretty wild taxidermy here at IT. But now Vincze Miklós from io9 has upped the cray cray factor with this collection of taxidermied animals. It will give you all the nightmares. The series of pics is titled The World’s Most Awkward Taxidermy. Which is a little… misleading. I don’t know if it’s so much awkward as it is, you know, horrifying. Still, as they say: one man’s “awkward” is another man’s “WTF get that thing away from me AHHHHHHH!” They say that, right? Yeah I thought so. They totally say that.
