A Groundbreaking 5-Driver Wireless Earbuds is Sweet Music to Your Ears

Wireless earbuds generally have no more than one driver, and it might be safe to assume that the TE-ZX1, featuring five drivers, is among the highest, if not the highest, number of drivers currently available in wireless earbuds. Having more drivers can enhance sound quality by allowing for more precise sound separation and clarity across different frequencies. According to the company’s recent update, this project is already in the mass-production stage.

If you’re an audiophile like me, you’ll appreciate the analog technology used in custom in-ear monitors (IEM). Their entry model typically starts with a 3-driver setup, designed to deliver balanced sound with a dedicated driver for lows, mids, and highs. On the high end, they offer a model with 12 drivers per ear – yes, 12! Considering this, the introduction of wireless earbuds with 5 drivers in each ear, priced under $300, is a game changer.

The newly developed system is known as the “Tribrid 5-Driver”. It includes a planar magnetic driver, three balanced armature drivers, and one dynamic driver. Planar Magnetic Drivers, Balanced Armature Drivers, and Dynamic Drivers each uniquely contribute to the audio quality. First, the Planar Magnetic Driver is known to produce superior sound quality, by utilizing a thin, lightweight diaphragm that’s able to cover a large surface area to deliver clear, detailed sound and excellent response times. The diaphragm’s size and thinness allow it to produce sound evenly across the frequency spectrum, contributing to a smoother, more natural sound.

Enjoy Wireless High-Resolution Audio with LDAC

Second, the three Balanced Armature Drivers are smaller and more efficient than other types. Due to their size, they are often used in in-ear headphones. These drivers can be tuned to specific frequencies, making them ideal for producing high-frequency sounds with precision. Multiple balanced armature drivers can be combined in a single earphone to cover a wide range of frequencies.

Lastly, the Dynamic Driver in the TE-ZX1 earbuds is 10mm in diameter, which contributes to superior sound quality and realistic low frequency. Dynamic drivers are known for their ability to produce strong, impactful bass and handle a wide frequency range. A significant advantage of dynamic drivers is their ability to handle a lot of power without distortion, which contributes to a louder, more powerful sound.

When working together, these three types of drivers should deliver dynamic and expansive sound quality across the frequency range, thanks to their complementary characteristics. I’m a big fan of in-ear-monitor (IEM) earphones, mainly because of the near-custom fit they offer. They provide a more enjoyable listening experience during long flights, extended office hours, or lengthy hiking trips. The high-speed combat ship “Swordfish II” from the hit anime series ‘Cowboy Bebop’ inspires the design, presenting a balanced yet high-tech and cutting-edge feel. When a product’s weight is distributed throughout the entire device, particularly something that sits in a compact space like your ear, it needs to feel balanced. This balance is what the designer has strived to achieve. The semi-hard case housing the earbuds is well-designed and features an integrated recharge function, providing up to 20 extra hours of listening enjoyment. The earbuds alone offer up to 8 hours of playtime and require only a 10-minute charge to gain another 60 minutes.

Regarding listening pleasure, having high-end drivers alone won’t guarantee rich sound quality without LDAC technology. Meanwhile, thanks to the 5 drivers, the use of a Digital Signal Processor (DSP) has been meticulously minimized By using LDAC – an audio coding technology developed by Sony that enables the transmission of High-Resolution (Hi-Res) Audio content, even over a Bluetooth connection. Unlike other Bluetooth-compatible coding technologies, such as SBC, it operates without down-converting the Hi-Res Audio content and allows approximately three times more data than those other technologies to be transmitted over a Bluetooth wireless network. This results in enhanced sound quality, more detailed and nuanced audio reproduction, and an overall superior listening experience.

Powerbeats Pro limited-edition collaborates with Melody Ehsani for witty messages

For the past couple of years, I’ve mostly been satisfied with the wireless earbuds that I have. They are minimalist and they do what needs to be done, which is to let me listen to my music, podcasts, and videos whenever I want to. Design-wise, they’re not much to talk about since they’re just basic and I’m not really looking for something that is pretty or fantastic. But of course, there are brands that aim to bring a little more to the aesthetics of these functional devices.

Designer: Melody Ehsani for Beats

Beats is one of those brands that do collaborations with designers and sometimes other brands. The latest one that they are bringing to the market is a limited-edition Powerbeats Pro that was designed by Los Angeles-based fashion designer Melody Ehsani. If you like colorful things with tongue-in-cheek messages, then this may appeal to you. She is not just known for being Foot Locker’s first female creative director but has collaborated with brands like Nike, Rebook, and celebrities like Serena Williams and the Red Hot Chili Peppers (side note, she’s married to RHCP guitarist Flea, if that interests you).

Her version of the Powerbeats Pro headphones, which she calls a “personal teleportation device”, are a pair of two-tone wireless earphones with ear hooks. The left one is colored navy blue and lime green while the right earphone has a color combination of coral and light pink. So obviously, if you like your devices to be monochromatic, this will not be for you. The earphones also have a cute graphic design saying “If you can read this, you’re too close” in Ehsani’s own handwriting.

Even the case of the earphones is pretty cool. The color is royal purple and it comes with these sentences in red: “Package contains immersive teleportation device. Will transport you to otherworldly dimensions. Personal space is needed for most effective results. Vibrate higher.” There seem to be some cute stickers included as well. It will be available on 11.11 at her website although it says “sold out” now in the product description.

Nothing has changed on the features and the specs because the change is mainly on the surface only. It comes with the same charging case and the same over-the-ear buds design so it’s ideal for busy athletes or outdoor enthusiasts. As with the regular Powerbeats Pro, this one is also sweat and water-resistant.

It’s a product under Apple so it also uses the Apple H1 chip. It’s the same chip used on the latest models of the AirPods. This means the pair can deliver powerful audio listening and independent earbud connection. Logitech unveils the first TWS earbuds designed specifically for your work-from-home needs

The first true wireless earbuds to be certified by Zoom, Google Meet, and Microsoft Teams, Logitech’s Zone True Wireless Earbuds were made specifically for online meetings.

It seems like every company with even the smallest connection to audio gear has its own TWS earbuds. Whether they’re designed to be affordable, or high-definition, or to have active noise-canceling, or to work perfectly with your phone or the rest of your wearable gear, every company wants a slice of the TWS pie, and more often than not, they just get drowned out because of the sheer competition… and Logitech seems to have understood that. Rather than jumping onto the bandwagon, Logitech decided to build the scenario before building the product. Meet the Logitech Zone Truly Wireless – earbuds designed and calibrated for work and business.

The earbuds can be paired with your laptop as well as your smartphone so you can go about your day from either device, whether it’s watching training videos or listening to music while you work, answering calls, or even attending online meetings. They’re designed to work seamlessly with common calling applications across most platforms and operating systems, and are certified by Microsoft for Teams and Skype for Business, by Google for Meet, and by Zoom.

Each earphone is equipped with a 3-microphone array – one to pick up your voice, and two more beamforming microphones to actively cancel out any noise. If you’re in a windy part of your home (or even if you’re outdoors for a bit while attending a meeting), a wind-blocking fabric on the outside helps cut out the gushing sound of wind, for a better audio experience not just for you, but for everyone else on the call.

The earphones can be controlled via the Logi Tune app on your phone or desktop. The app allows you to calibrate sound thanks to a 5-band equalizer, and even mute-unmute your microphone directly without needing to look for the appropriate button on your video-calling app/program. They boast of a 6-hour battery life, enough to last through even the longest meetings, and an overall of 24-hours with the charging case. If you’re running low on battery and you really need to enter a call, a mere 5-hours of charging within the case will give you one full hour of use. Oh, and the case wirelessly charges too!

The earphones come in two contemporary colors, black and a light pink, and they’re designed to discreetly fit into your ears without hanging out and looking too obvious like your AirPods. Moreover, you can use them outside work too (they’re great for listening to music) and even at the gym, since they’re rated IP68 water and dust resistant. The Logitech Zone True Wireless Earbuds will go on sale this fall for $299.

Marshall’s first True Wireless Earbuds are here and they look like an audiophile’s wet-dream!

So far, most TWS Earphones we’ve seen have been released by tech companies… and if there’s anything we’ve learnt, is that tech companies aren’t really great when it comes to the actual audio performance. TWS earbuds can’t really stand up to well-engineered, fine-tuned audio gear from true-blue audio companies… so when Marshall steps into the TWS earbud game, you best believe that they’ll bring their 59-years worth of audio firepower into the hardware they design.

Meet the Mode II, Marshall’s first TWS earbuds, designed with the promise to deliver a “thunderous audio experience” with “growling bass, natural-sounding mids and crisp treble,” pumped out through its custom-tuned dynamic 6 mm drivers. The drivers sit within the earphones’ tiny yet ergonomic enclosure. The Mode II comes with four earbud tips to choose from for that perfect fit, and the earphones themselves are designed to be IPX4 water-resistant, which means you can descend into an incredibly sweaty moshpit with them.

Although compact, the Mode II earphones wonderfully reflect Marshall’s audio-forward DNA, from their black faux-leather texture (both on the earpieces as well as the case) designed to pay a hat-tip to their nearly 60-year legacy of building some of the best amplifiers and stage monitors, to the classic M logo emblazoned on each earphone, serving as the iconic branding detail. In fact, unlike most tech-driven TWS earbuds, Marshall’s Mode II are more focused on delivering the crisp, punchy sound that the brand’s associated with. The earbuds come with Bluetooth 5.1 for unrivaled connectivity, as well as touch-enabled surfaces that give you access to Transparency Mode (being able to listen to the world around you) and EQ settings, among other features like summoning your phone’s voice assistant.

Ultimately, that fine tuned sound is only as good as the Mode II’s battery life, which boasts of 5 hours of wireless playback on a full charge, with a further 20 hours of use with the charging case. The Marshall Mode II TWS Earbuds is available to order now for US$179, with shipping starting March 18, 2021.

Apple should have made Beats truly wireless earphones really long back…

Remember Beats by Dre? Apple acquired them in 2014 and it’s been radio silence ever since. Apple did however launch a few Beats products just to keep the buzz going, but nothing really matched up to the excitement around the AirPods. Now I’m not really sure whether Apple bought Beats to throttle their success (so the AirPods wouldn’t have any competition), or whether they bought Beats just because they saw it as a nice brand to own, but it’s safe to assume that the Beats brand isn’t once what it used to be. Lew from Unbox Therapy even has a theory that Apple’s slowly phasing the brand out completely.

In an alternate universe where Apple wasn’t so anti-competitive, these Beats miniPods would surely be a popular hit. Modeled to look sort of like the Google Pixel Buds, the Beats miniPods are the conceptual creation of 14-year old Nicola Morelli who found herself with extra time on her hands during the lockdown. The TWS earbuds come with the iconic Beats logo on them, and fit snugly into the ear using silicone tips. I assume the driver technology on the inside would match up to the Beats standards, and have some form of noise-canceling too, but that’s something we can only dream of at this point of time. The miniPods, however, do come with touch-sensitivity, allowing you to tap to answer and reject calls, control playback, and adjust the volume. Like all TWS earbuds, the miniPods have their own nifty charging-case too, and this one even boasts of a clear-top design that allows you to see the earbuds when they’re inside the case. Pretty nice, eh? If I was only half as talented when I was a 14-year old.

What if you could unlock your smartphone with your earbuds instead of your face?

Sort of like two-factor authentication for your smartphone.

Think of it. The situation’s been perfectly set up. FaceID or facial recognition seems counter-intuitive now, considering everyone’s wearing masks, and there’s little chance companies are going to embrace a fingerprint sensor on the phone again for quite a while. This solution, by Alvaro Navarro, seems perfect for a lot of reasons. A. It’s absolutely convenient, because truly wireless earbuds already have touch sensors on them. B. It’s easy to implement too, and can work with practically any smartphone. C. It could be a great business model, allowing companies to push out more earbuds as a result (good design and good business don’t always intersect though), and D. It could be a much more secure way of unlocking your phone.

A lot of IT professionals use hardware authentication USB devices like the YubiKey to unlock their laptops, as an alternative to passwords. What if the earbud could provide the same service for your smartphone? No face recognition, no PIN numbers, no patterns. Just tap your ear and your phone unlocks. How’s it more secure? Well, for starters you’re using your fingerprint for authentication, and the second layer of security comes from the fact that your phone AND earphone need to be in proximity (and connected) for it to work. Not sure what impact it would have on the earbud’s battery, but it definitely feels like an idea worth considering, no?

Razer’s limited edition Pikachu earbuds come with a Pokéball charging case!!

I recommend wearing the earbuds upside down so you look like you’ve got Pikachu ears…

Razer’s limited edition Pikachu earbuds are awesome for all the right reasons. Not only are they an absolutely delightful looking pair of familiar yellow earbuds, they even push the limit by coming in a Pokéball shaped charging case – which is even more exceptional because it’s a ‘charging’ case and Pikachu’s an electric type Pokémon!

The adorable earbuds are essentially a limited variant of Razer’s Hammerhead earphones, but in yellow, and with a Pikachu graphic replacing the Razer triple-snake logo. The truly wireless earbuds dock magnetically into a Pokéball-shaped charging case, which may not be tiny enough to fit into your pocket, but which noob carries Pokéballs in their pockets? The earbud case has a tiny lanyard that’s perfect for strapping around your hand as you walk around and get jealous looks from fellow Pokémon lovers.

The earbuds provide 3 hours of playback time, and the spherical case supplies them with an additional 15 hours… you could say that your earphones are ‘resting’ within their Pokéball. The only bit of disappointing news is that the earbuds will be available only in China, via the Tmall e-commerce store starting 16th April.

These bean-shaped Samsung Galaxy earphones were designed to fit perfectly into your ear

It’s 2020 and I’m still surprised we haven’t figured out the best shape for a pair of earphones. We’ve experimented with circles, silicone tips, weird wing-shaped hooks that latch onto parts of our ear canal, and even AirPods, and we’re yet to arrive at a universal earphone design that fits, pardon the phrase, like a glove. Recent images based on reliable leaks show that Samsung’s experimenting with kidney-bean shaped TWS earphones that fit neatly into the outer-ear canal. Given their form, it seems fitting that Samsung’s codenamed them The Bean.

The Bean’s shape looks pretty promising and is apparently smaller than any of Samsung’s Galaxy Buds. Sort of a cross between a hearing aid and consumer-grade wireless earphones, the Beans are a little over an inch long and have two small loudspeakers each, covering the midrange and treble, as reported by WinFuture. There’s even an outside channel similar to what you’d find in subwoofers, and a host of microphones, not just for answering calls, but presumably also to help cancel outside noise, because of the lack of an air-tight silicone tip on the Bean.

There’s no official word from Samsung with any working details or a release date (or even a price range), but reputable sources indicate a summer or autumn launch to coincide with the Galaxy Note 20. Until then, I’m stuffing broad-beans into my ear to see if they actually hold up. Please don’t try this at home.

The world’s thinnest truly-wireless earphones don’t feel like a floss-box in your pocket

In the interest of consumer-friendliness, someone designed what is arguably the most satisfying pair of truly wireless earphones. The CARD20, as they’re called, come with a coveted iF 2020 Design Award for being incredibly slim, pocket-friendly, yet as robust and long-lasting as other truly wireless earphones on the market. They feature a capsule-shaped design that measures a stunning half-inch in thickness, allowing them to slide right into your pocket without creating that unsightly bulge. To keep the CARD20 thin and lightweight, the case even comes with a windowed lid that allows you to see the headphones inside them, giving you the added advantage of knowing if you’re ever missing an earbud by simply looking at the case.

The case’s razor-thin and lightweight build comes thanks to opting for an aluminum construction over a plastic one. The individual earbuds (which weigh 0.1 ounces each) feel practically weightless, while their design profile ensures a proper, lasting fit, brought about by testing the earbud’s design on as many as 6000 ears. The CARD20 comes equipped with Bluetooth 5.0 for a strong, low-latency connection, and the earphones provide 4 hours of music playback, while the case can juice them for an additional 16 hours.

Like all truly wireless smart earbuds, the CARD20 lets you use intuitive gesture-based controls to play or pause music, increase or decrease volume, answer and reject calls, and even summon your phone’s voice assistant… and to top it off, they’re IPx4 waterproof too, making them slimmer, lighter, classier (that anodized aluminum finish, though) than other truly wireless earphones, while being just as functional… and THAT’s how you design award-winning consumer-friendly tech. Oh, and they’re just $79!
