Plevo’s first connected Backpack and Duffle Bag with Face ID for complete security

Having come back from my recent trip to London and China, I realized how dangerous it can be to catch a few winks at the airport. For example, I fell asleep at the Dubai airport and almost missed my connection. Luckily, I was woken up by a friendly staff, and I made it to my flight on time. However, this incident got me thinking – in my deep-jet lagged-slumber, anyone could have opened my backpack and cabin bag, and tampered with the contents.

Thankfully, I’m back home safe and sound, but the next time around, I definitely don’t want to become a statistic of airport theft. Bags like the B-One & D-One Series, seem to a wise investment in the name of secure travels. As the first connected Backpack and Duffle Bag in the world, the duo are fitted with a Smart Lock – Face ID, Touch ID, Morse Code – and a removable battery pack. Needless to say, a Travel Companion App completes the whole deal. This one App connects all of the Plevo bags (old and new).

I like the fact that you can check on your flight status through the Travel Assistant App and ensure that you get to your gate on time. The removable battery backpack ensures you can juice-up your devices on the go.

Available in two sizes each, both the backpack and duffle bag are stylish and complement the latest ‘travel look.’ If you happen to move too far away from the bags, they will alert you via the app, ensuring you stay close to them. The B-One & D-One Series are intelligent bags that are spacious and secure.

Neon lights redesigned to meet your interior lighting needs

We typically find neon tubes used as signboards and in outdoor advertising, one of the rare occasions we are seeing them bent into shape as creative indoor lighting, is with the MÖN lamps. These energy-saving lamps use neon technology and offer endless possibilities in terms of creativity. For this series we see some manually-bent neon tubes teamed with special aluminum body, that create silhouettes that are alluring.

Available in three forms: standing, hanging, or wall-mounted, you can control the illumination thanks to the dimmer that is integrated. The fun part however, is the fact that you can get the lamps customized and bent into a size that suits you and of course the tube color.

The Scream case for your iPhone

Edvard Munch would have a fit if he ever saw his works getting diluted by an iPhone case. The Scream case adopts the persona of the famous painting done by the Norwegian artist, and is an expression of modern art. The agonized face that we see in the painting is the most iconic images of our times. It is perceived as a symbol of anxiety that a modern man goes through. Perhaps the recent events at Apple – Ive’s exit, tepid design of the iPhone 11 – can be seen in the same light; given our addiction to the brand.

Designer: 2-LA Design

“It is almost a tradition for Apple fan to make fun of new iPhone camera design since Apple introduce camera bump, and it hits peak today after Apple introduced iPhone 11’s triple cameras design, we think it will be both interesting and inspirational to share something that we created for iPhone X back then, to expressing how we can look at today’s smartphone design with eyes of art,” 2-LA DESIGN told Yanko Design.

The Scream is the popular name given to multiple versions of a composition by Norwegian Expressionist artist Edvard Munch between 1893 and 1910. The works show a figure with an agonized expression against a landscape with a tumultuous orange sky. Arthur Lubow has described The Scream as “an icon of modern art, a Mona Lisa for our time.

The slightly sculpted surface makes the case visually attractive also provides an anti-slippery grip in hand.

Self-cleaning travel T-shirts with HercFibér, kicks the need for laundry and helps you travel light

The future of fashion is no laundry, and to help endorse this is the Apollo Self-Cleaning T-shirts. Made from fabric that has been created by material scientists – it is the first time we are see it being incorporated into a travel tee-shirt. With airlines getting stringent on baggage weight limits – even Emirates has cut down the limit – it only makes sense to change the way we pack our clothes, by eliminating unnecessary clothes.

We all know that bacteria, sweat and the elements cause us to go through several clothes during a trip – but if one element – like the tee that we carry, can be modified, we can end up saving a lot of space, as well as cut down our laundry pile.

HercFibér was created by material scientists and the team has worked over two years on this travel T-Shirt. This new material is able to fight bacteria and can destroy almost all smell causing bacteria within a 24-hour timeframe.

The Apollo T-shirt would probably get Steve Jobs’ approval, given that he made wearing Tees to work, the norm.

The Apollo – Self-cleaning Travel T-shirt with 25 Benefits

First of its kind that never has to be washed but instead just rinsed off to clean off the dirt and dead skin cells and hung up so you can re-wear it for as many days as you’d like.

Made specifically for ultra-light travelers, you’re free to travel the world with just 1 shirt for 1 week, 1 month, 1 year, or even 1 lifetime.

Made with HercFibér

HercFibér is a unique material they created that blends together three different fibers to get the exact features they desired. These materials are put together in a unique combination to create a material that is perfect for travel.

The self-cleaning works thanks to biology. Read below.

Most materials act as a petri dish for bacteria; helping smell-causing bacterias to grow in the fiber while they feed on your sweat. The more time and sweat, the more bacteria grow on the material and releases increasingly worse odor.

HercFibér’s unique blend of fibers grows bacteria very slowly while you’re wearing it, but once you take it off, it starts cleaning itself by killing the smell-causing bacteria and so by the morning, it smells clean again.

Unlike cotton and other materials that keep on growing bacteria until it turns to mold/mildew, Apollo’s material does the opposite, by actively getting rid of the bacteria.

Super slim wallets with fifteen layers and invisible stitching are good for posture, high on innovation

It’s taken years for many men to realize that carrying bulky wallets in the back pocket is actually bad for their spine and posture. Perhaps this is one of the reasons why my brother always takes his wallet out of his back pocket, before sitting down. This habit however, has caused him to lose one too many wallets.

YeongKyu Yoo of cloudandco has designed two wallets that are extremely slim – WalletType1 and SlimWalletType1. The former is a bi-fold design with 6 pockets, and the latter is a card wallet with 2 pockets. Both of them look to be a solution to the above problem.

The key to the form are the layers and the invisible stitches. Sporting a multi-layer construction with uniform thickness, the edges of the wallets are precisely painted for the ultimate seamless look. The wallets look like a solid sheet of beautiful leather and nothing more.

WalletType1 is constructed from 15 layers and each layer contributes to become a singular form. The SlimWalletType1 has up to 13 layers of construction. Each wallet is envisioned in four colors.

Designer: YeongKyu Yoo of cloudandco

Invisible Stitches

To capture the beauty of quality leather, we focused on bringing its texture to the foreground. This meant keeping all unnecessary details invisible, including stitches. The multi-layer construction was carefully conceived so that once assembled, the form is completely uniform in thickness. To finish it off, the edges are precisely painted for the ultimate seamless look — just like a solid sheet of beautiful leather.

A Simple Initiative

Our goal was simple — to create a wallet that feels like one in the hands. A monolith to the eye, without any visible seams. To achieve such a form, we hid all the magic underneath. Below the surface lies up to 13 layers of construction, depending on the wallet. Each layer is artfully engineered. The resulting form is a fluid shape that is seamless, slim and durable — effortless on the surface, thoughtful within.

WalletType1 is constructed from 15 layers —— every layer contributes to become a singular form.

Maker

Made by Hanbo Enc and based in Seoul, they are expert in shaping and manipulating leather and fabric for over 20 years. Product production led by an artisan with 30 years+ of experience in relevant field. Has worked extensively with partners including Montblanc, Microsoft and Samsung.

Dustpan and broom that you can display

Nope, that’s not a new sculpture that you have put on your side table, it’s the Folded Cleaning Tool. One of the reasons why I like brands like Muji is because they design everyday products that you don’t mind displaying in your living space – in plain view of every guest! This broom and dustpan set is something on these lines.

Crafted from two sheets of aluminum, the design has clean lines and smooth curves, giving it the ‘extra appeal’ and worthy of being highlighted, when not in use.

Wall-mounted shelf/chair looks like a waffle maker

It will be very easy to confuse the Folding Wall Chair by designers Ahmad Ahmadian and Reyhaneh Rajabzadeh Samani as a waffle making machine that is placed at an odd height! Open the contraption, and you have a seat for yourself. Close it, and the bottom cushion part has an exclusive niche for holding magazines and books.

I can see great use of this in cramped offices and public spaces, where you can keep some mags for entertainment and then offer a seat when required.

A wireless electric heater to keep you warm wherever you are

We are used to seeing radiators as an obvious part of a room. No matter how slim you make its form, the design has the slab or chunky look to it.

The Promenade is a simple U – shaped rod, that sits discreetly in any room. To make it portable in design, there is a wheel system fitted to the bottom of the pipe. When in use, the tube lights up ambient-ly, indicating that it is in use.

Using battery charging as its mainstay, the heater can be lined up together – six at a time – and charged at one go. Collectively the heat emitted is strong, so its best to be mindful of this.

Designer: Jaeyong Lee

“Promenade has the meaning of walking. The promenade can be moved together when the user moves to the desired space. This will provide enough functionality and aesthetics to warm the user’s emotions,” Lee told Yanko Design.

“Charged wireless heaters move around the space and warm the atmosphere as well as the air.”

“On the front is an LED that shows the charge status and temperature. The lower part has a terminal for charging and one wheel for movement.”

“One wheel at the bottom does not roll when standing upright.”

“When the user tilts to move this heavy heater, the wheels touch the floor and are movable.”

“Power can be obtained from the battery to heat the coils and dissipate high heat.”

The kitchen sink gets revamped to let you prep food, wash and dry

The reality of life is that not all of us can afford to have very spacious kitchens, so an ample sink is just a distant dream for many. However, there is a workaround that gives us the illusion of a spacious kitchen – and it’s something that comes up when designers stretch their imagination and give us functional options. Falling under this category is the Romesco Kitchen Sink, a series of six sinks that help us make the most of the limited kitchen space that we may have.

Offering multi-functionality in a compact format, the sink integrates accessories that facilitate key tasks like food preparation, washing and drying. It converts the basin into a workstation, thanks to the worktop accessory. While the design of the Romesco range reduces the overall footprint of the sink, it however increases the functional space, so that you can get the most out of it.

Crafted from composite quartz and stainless-steel, this affordable range features areas for food prep, washing of utensils, drying the washed dishes and propping them. The accessories can be placed either vertical or horizontal on the basin, giving you the freedom to use them the way you want to.

The drainer and dish rack are designed in a way that they can be reversed and placed inside the sink, so that you can increase the drying surface area. When you don’t need them, simply nestle the accessories inside the big unit and stow them away.

Designer: David Needham

Insights & Research

The average kitchen size in Europe is less than 12m2, the kitchen should be an efficient and functional area which utilises all available space. The kitchen sink is a key functional area and is an important element of daily workflow. We conducted research to review the type of sinks across different homes, many sinks adopted small bowls with large drainers using a significant amount of worktop space.

Concept Development

As a result of our customer insights we explored how a sink could utilise space more efficiently. We identified an opportunity to use accessories within the bowl for key functional tasks. This allowed us to reduce the overall footprint of the sink, saving valuable worktop space.

Throughout the development we had to be conscious of manufacturing constraints to achieve a commercially viable solution whilst maintaining a consistent and coordinated design language that adhered to the Goodhome brand.

Prototype & Refinement

We tested and evaluated a variety of prototypes at different stages of the design process. We continually refined and improved the design to ensure we achieved high performance at an affordable price.

Design Proposal

The Romesco range consists of 6 sinks with a selection of integrated accessories. The sinks are manufactured from composite quartz and stainless-steel offering different price points to a wide range of consumers.

Integrated Accessories

Ledges within the bowl allow for different accessory combinations, whether that be for food preparation or washing up. The accessories can be orientated in a vertical or horizontal position to create a flexible space.

Large Fucntional Bowl

Many sinks don’t offer a functional bowl size and can be difficult for users to wash bigger items that can’t fit in the dishwasher. Romescos large bowl ensures there’s enough space to conveniently access and wash larger items.

Drainer & Dish Rack

The dish rack offers efficient storage and can be reversed and placed inside the bowl to increase the drying surface area. The integrated cutlery drainer allows the user to separate cutlery for drying and storage.

Compact Storage

When the accessories aren’t in use they can efficiently nest for compact storage.

This 3-Tenkara-rods-in-1 is perfect for small stream fishing to open water fishing

Almost every sport that you see, has undergone change and evolution. However, the one that has been resistant to change is fly-fishing. With the introduction of Tenkara rods, a lot has changed for the anglers as well as manufacturers.

A very minimalist rod, the Tenkara rod has no reel and is light in weight. Brought to the West by the Japanese counterparts, Tenkara fishing rods are most sought after and the options within this segment are plenty. The basics for the rod, remain the same – lightweight, collapsible and durable.

The DRAGONtail MIZUCHI Small Stream Tenkara Fly Fishing Rod is designed in collaboration with Tom Davis of the Teton Tenkara fame. The venture has resulted in a superior, small stream rod that comes in three lengths – 8 feet, 9.6 feet and 11f feet, Tenkara Rods.

Tested by Tom Davis for feedback, this rod ticks all the boxes, when it comes to a small stream rod. The MIZUCHI Ultimate Small Stream Tenkara Rod can be used for fishing at very tight spots and at the same time, it can be extended for longer reach when streams open up.

Based on Tom’s goals for the rod, the team addressed the concerns of a rod that is a minimum 240 cm length and with the ability to “zoom” to a longer length for use when the stream opens up. The balance of the rod and the flex action were also refined, when considering Tom’s insights.

The resulting MIZUCHI 340zx Tenkara rod is designed such that it can be used for fishing at three different lengths, and has two locking zoom sections. These three different lengths in one rod give you the advantage of covering many different waters with the same rod.

DRAGONtail MIZUCHI Tenkara Fly Fishing Rod

A collaboration design with Tom Davis of Teton Tenkara to make a superior small stream 3 Length (8ft, 9.6ft, 11ft) Tenkara rod.

The Idea of the MIZUCHI Ultimate Small Stream Tenkara Rod

“This prototype MIZUCHI zx340 small stream Tenkara rod was born from a collaboration rod design we did with Tom Davis (a master of fishing small overgrown rivers that most people pass up) of Teton Tenkara Blog. Tom’s input & testing was key in shaping the outcome of the MIZUCHI rod prototypes, we even let him name the rod,” Auger told Yanko Design.

Tom had a few goals in mind that he wanted in a small stream Tenkara rod that would make him more efficient fishing his creeks and overgrown streams.

It must:

– Be no shorter than 240 cm length.
– Be able to “zoom” to a longer (not just longer, but practical and usable) length for use when the canopy opens up and a longer reach is desired (beaver ponds, meadow sections, an opening in the trees, etc).
– Have excellent balance at all lengths, especially in the fully extended length.
– Have a flex action appropriate for the intended use of the desired length.
– Be dull in finish and non flashy in color scheme.
– Have great sling shot casting abilities (other name is bow and arrow cast).
– Be robust so to handle the unique stresses of a small creek. But it should also have great customer service and be easily and economically repaired if breakage does happen.
– Be able to be completely disassembled for drying and cleaning.

Prototype Demo Addressing the Goals

3-Tenkara-Rods-In-One For Tight Spots and Open Water

The MIZUCHI 340zx Tenkara rod can be fished at 3 different lengths with its two locking zoom sections, making it an excellent choice for small stream fishing to open water fishing.

The 11ft (340cm) long length is excellent for when you have open casting room such as wider sections of the stream, a river, or even on still water. The 11ft length is a great general purpose length for a Tenkara rod that will work great in most types of water where there is room to cast.

The 9.6ft (290cm) middle length is great when the stream or canopy are a bit to tight for a long rod but don’t require a super short rod.

And the short 8ft (240cm) length is perfect for when there is lots of canopy overgrowth. You can also perform an excellent bow-n-arrow cast if things are to tight for this length.

What is Tenkara?

It is basically a form of fixed line fly fishing with origins from the mountains of Japan. Tenkara fishing uses a long (commonly 10-13ft) telescopic rod with NO REEL. A short light weight line (about the length of the rod) is tied to the tip of the rod, with about 3-4ft of tippet and a fly on the end.

The gear is simple and the basics are easy to learn so you can start catching fish early on in the learning process. That being sad, you can spend a lifetime learning different different casting presentations and fly manipulations techniques that go way beyond the basics.

Some of The Big Advantages of Tenkara Fishing Gear

– Simple, light-weight and compact telescopic rod that can be packed with you anywhere (it is very popular for hikers, bike packing). The rod collapses down to about 2ft long with no reel; so the only other gear you need to carry is a small spool with your line, some tippet, and some flies.

– The long rod and short light line allow you to create a triangle keeping the majority of your line off the water so you get a perfect drift with little effort. You can reach over current, guide your fly around obstructions, or guide your fly to drift into the perfect hole.

– Having a tight line to your fly gives you the ability to perform fly manipulation techniques with the slightest twitches, allowing you to temp fish to strike your fly when a dead drift does not work well.

– There is no reel to mess with! This means line management and less fuss and more enjoying what is around you.
It is quick to learn the basics and fun to learn new ways to present and manipulate your flies.

MIZUCHI Rod Specs:

– Collapsed Length: 64cm (25.2in)
– Extended lengths: 240cm (7.88ft), 292cm (9.58ft), 339.5cm (11.14ft)
– Weight (with out tip plug or cap): 79.2 g (2.8 ounces)
– CCS/RFI: 16 pennies/6.6, 17 p/5.8, 18 p/5.3

Kid-Friendly Rod

With its 3 lengths, the MIZUCHI rod will be a great option for kids as well. Little kids can learn on the short lengths of the MIZUCHI Tenkara Rod that is easier for them to handle. As they get older or more experienced, they can graduate up to using the longer lengths of the MIZUCHI Tenkara rod. It is like a rod that grows with them.
